Two Firefighters Killed in Idaho Ambush

A tragic incident unfolded near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on Sunday when firefighters responding to a brush fire on Canfield Mountain were ambushed by a gunman. Two firefighters lost their lives, and a third sustained serious injuries in the attack. Authorities believe the fire was intentionally set to lure first responders into a trap. Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris described the attack as an “ambush,” noting that the firefighters “did not have a chance.” The suspect, who acted alone, was later found deceased near the scene with a firearm nearby. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation. The incident prompted a massive law enforcement response, including over 300 officers, FBI tactical teams, and aerial support. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the surrounding area and lifted after the suspect was located. The wildfire, however, continued to pose a threat, and residents were advised to remain vigilant. Idaho Governor Brad Little condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters” and urged residents to pray for the victims and their families. The names of the fallen firefighters have not been released pending notification of their families. The Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and Kootenai County Fire and Rescue are mourning the loss of their colleagues, and the injured firefighter remains in stable condition after surgery. The community has expressed an outpouring of support, with residents lining overpasses to honor the fallen as their bodies were transported to Spokane, Washington. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the suspect’s identity and motive. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of first responders and the potential for similar attacks.

Ask the Expert – LION

Martin Joosen, Managing Director for EMEA at LION, discusses Europe’s new EN-certified turnout gear, customer-centred strategy, and redefining fire training. Navigating evolving standards, rising risks, and mounting environmental pressures, Europe’s fire services face growing complexity. From government brigades to industrial teams, operational demands now stretch beyond conventional firefighting – into multi-threat environments requiring smarter protection, deeper training, and better support. Across Europe and beyond, fire and rescue services are undergoing a critical evolution. The roles firefighters play are expanding—encompassing not only structural fire suppression but response to industrial accidents, climate-related events, hazardous material incidents, and increasingly complex rescue scenarios. These demands are pushing services to re-evaluate what readiness truly means in practice. Gear must be lighter, smarter, and more adaptable. Training must mirror real-world threat environments. And support must extend across the entire operational lifecycle—from recruitment to post-incident decontamination. Against this backdrop, manufacturers are being asked to do more than supply products; they must provide strategic solutions. Procurement teams are now looking for partners who understand operational realities and can deliver integrated offerings that support firefighter health, performance, and long-term resilience. This shift has sparked innovation across the PPE and training sectors—blurring the lines between equipment, service, and infrastructure. LION, a company with more than 125 years of experience, has long operated at the intersection of personal protective equipment (PPE) and firefighter education. With deep roots in the US market and a significant presence globally, the firm has become known for developing high-performance turnout gear and fire training solutions that respond to real-world needs. LION’s global reputation has long been built on its ability to blend technology with practicality, heritage with innovation. But what makes its approach particularly relevant today is the growing emphasis on modularity, lifecycle thinking, and human-centred design. Whether through next-gen turnout gear engineered for European standards or training facilities designed to reduce long-term health risks, LION is positioning itself as a catalyst for change. It’s no longer just about making gear that protects—it’s about building systems that enable firefighters to perform at their best, every time they respond. Today, as LION prepares to launch its EN-certified turnout gear in Europe, its EMEA division is also reshaping its sales model to better meet the diverse demands of modern fire services. In this ‘Ask the Expert’ interview, Martin Jewson, Managing Director for EMEA at LION, explains the thinking behind the company’s strategic transformation and how its latest innovations are designed to elevate firefighter safety and readiness across the region. Martin, could you briefly introduce yourself and LION’s core focus in the EMEA region? Yes, of course. I’m Martin Jewson, Managing Director for LION EMEA, which is a subsidiary of LION US. We’re a family-owned company with over 125 years of heritage and we’re a global leader in personal protective equipment (PPE) for fire and rescue. In EMEA, our focus is twofold: we produce turnout gear and also specialise in firefighter training. This includes designing and delivering training products and complete sites based on three fire training types – carbonaceous, gas-based, and digital. These three components together offer a 100% training solution for firefighters worldwide. To read the full article see our latest issue here.

By Doug Dafler, Director of Sales- Fire (US), Lakeland Industries and Lee Glanville Rothman, Business Development Manager, Global-Pacific Helmets. As the demands on firefighters and first responders evolve, so too must the standards and strategies used to define, evaluate, and deliver personal protective equipment. The unification of standards, as seen in the development of the 2025 editions of NFPA 1970, NFPA 1950, and NFPA 1955, reflects a shift toward a more holistic view of protective ensembles and equipment. By consolidating previously distinct standards into system-oriented frameworks, NFPA has taken steps to improve testing consistency and enable better integration across gear categories, from head to toe.  NFPA standards are technically rigorous and are designed to ensure safety under the most extreme conditions specific to their intended use. Structural firefighting gear, for example, undergoes testing protocols completely distinct from wildland firefighting gear, with each standard, such as NFPA 1970 and NFPA 1950, written to support these functional differences. This allows manufacturers to build products that are not only compliant but also suited to the environment and task at hand, delivering gear that is fit for purpose.  However, evaluating fit for purpose in the field is more complex. While NFPA standards define the parameters for performance and safety, fire departments operate within practical constraints. Budget limitations often prevent the purchase of multiple ensembles tailored to different response types. Structural firefighting gear may be used for vehicle extrication, rescue, or field fires—not because it is the most suitable choice, but because it is the only one available. In some departments, fewer than 20% of calls involve structural fires, yet structural PPE remains the primary uniform for all scenarios.  This highlights a broader tension between certification and application. NFPA certification is a requirement for manufacturers seeking market credibility and compliance. In some states, it is legislated. In others, individual departments determine their approach based on risk assessments and operational needs. While many still prefer NFPA-certified products, it is not uncommon to find non-compliant gear in active use. In these cases, product selection is often driven more by wear trials and field-based realities than by certification standards.  Manufacturers must therefore design PPE that meets evolving standards while remaining practical and cost-effective for real-world use. The challenge is to create durable, compliant gear that balances the intent of the standard with the real-world experience of the user. That means responding not only to technical requirements, but also to how gear fits, functions, and interacts with the human body. Good PPE does not just protect—it enables performance. Comfort, adjustability, and inclusivity across different body types all contribute to safety by reducing distraction, fatigue, and ergonomic risk.  The shift toward systems integration in standards invites renewed inquiry into each component. If an SCBA provides primary eye protection in a structural fire, is an integrated or external visor still essential on a helmet? Similarly, when a particulate-blocking hood is worn in combination with a helmet that includes an insulated ear flap, are we unintentionally contributing to heat stress through overprotection?  To read the full article see our latest issue here.
