MSA Safety Secures $35 Million Deal for U.S. Air Force

MSA Safety Inc. has been selected by the U.S. Air Force for a significant $35 million contract to supply state-of-the-art respiratory protection gear. This deal involves providing MSA’s innovative G1 Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and associated equipment to U.S. Air Force fire brigades globally.

The contract includes the delivery of the advanced G1 SCBA model, complemented by specialized facepieces, masks designed for chemical warfare components (CWC), and supplied-air respirator (SAR) kits. These kits enhance the SCBA’s functionality for extended use as an airline device. This new equipment will replace the older MSA air masks currently in use.

The G1 SCBA, notable for its over 15 patents, is a testament to technological advancement in firefighter safety. Key features include the removal of electronic parts from the facepiece, a revolutionary “Central Power” system operating on a single rechargeable battery, and unique “buddy lights” for clear visibility of air supply data in low-light conditions. Additionally, it boasts enhanced voice amplification for better communication.

Ergonomically designed, the G1 SCBA offers superior comfort for extended wear. Its adjustable waist belt and broad shoulder straps are specifically designed to evenly distribute the apparatus’s weight across the hips of firefighters.

Production for the U.S. Air Force has commenced this fall at MSA’s manufacturing facility in Murrysville, Pennsylvania. The company anticipates that deliveries, which began recently, will continue through the end of the year and into 2024, ensuring U.S. Air Force fire brigades are equipped with the latest in respiratory protection technology.
