Two Firefighters Killed in Idaho Ambush

A tragic incident unfolded near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on Sunday when firefighters responding to a brush fire on Canfield Mountain were ambushed by a gunman. Two firefighters lost their lives, and a third sustained serious injuries in the attack.

Authorities believe the fire was intentionally set to lure first responders into a trap. Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris described the attack as an “ambush,” noting that the firefighters “did not have a chance.” The suspect, who acted alone, was later found deceased near the scene with a firearm nearby. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.

The incident prompted a massive law enforcement response, including over 300 officers, FBI tactical teams, and aerial support. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the surrounding area and lifted after the suspect was located. The wildfire, however, continued to pose a threat, and residents were advised to remain vigilant.

Idaho Governor Brad Little condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters” and urged residents to pray for the victims and their families. The names of the fallen firefighters have not been released pending notification of their families.

The Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and Kootenai County Fire and Rescue are mourning the loss of their colleagues, and the injured firefighter remains in stable condition after surgery. The community has expressed an outpouring of support, with residents lining overpasses to honor the fallen as their bodies were transported to Spokane, Washington.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the suspect’s identity and motive. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of first responders and the potential for similar attacks.
