MSA Safety says that its latest self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), the MSA G1 XR 2025 Edition, is now certified as compliant with the 2025 Edition of the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) 1970 performance standard.
The product has also received approval from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and certification from the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI).
Fire departments can now order the G1 XR 2025 Edition, with production ramping up over the coming months at MSA’s Murrysville facility near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Unveiled earlier this year at the Fire Department Instructor’s Conference in Indianapolis, the G1 XR builds on a decade of innovation and firefighter feedback. It introduces updates to soft goods and Bluetooth indicators to meet the new NFPA requirements.
The 2025 NFPA 1970 standard consolidates several previous editions and introduces three key upgrades:
- End-of-service time indicator alarm now sounds at 31 percent air remaining for 4500 PSI systems (previously 35%)
- All soft goods, including straps and pouches, are now removable for easier cleaning
- New Bluetooth connection indicators confirm radio links, with placement depending on the communication system used

The G1 SCBA platform includes 15 U.S. patents and integrates features such as voice amplification, radio interface, a single rechargeable power source, and built-in telemetry.
