Who’s Who – International Water Mist Association

The International Water Mist Association (IWMA) has been pioneering the evolution of water mist systems and education for nearly 30 years. Contact information: Poststraße 33 (im Hamburg Business Center) D-20354 Hamburg Germany + 49 (0) 174 301 3878 info@iwma.net Iwma.net The International Water Mist Association (IWMA) was founded on 15th April 1998. Back then the target was to bundle what was happening on an international level, to collect and spread knowledge and to communicate matters of common interest. In 2001, IWMA held its first International Water Mist Conference (which since then has become an annual event). Its aim was to introduce the technology as well as the organisation to the world of firefighting. The conference has been held in London, Paris, Prague, Copenhagen and Istanbul and many other major European cities. In 2026, the only event solely dedicated to water mist will be held in Prague, Czech Republic, on 7th and 8th October. The technology itself was invented more than a hundred years ago by F.E. Myers. But it was only after the adoption of the Montreal Protocol in the late 1980s and a devastating fire on a passenger ferry in 1990 that water mist as a means of fire protection took off. The two events paved the way and made clear that there was a need for alternatives in firefighting. And thus, water mist as a fire extinguishing agent was re-discovered which called for the establishment of an organisation. Today, IWMA still is the only association dedicated exclusively to water mist firefighting. IWMA is based in Hamburg, Germany. From its office, it supports the continued development, research and applications engineering of generic water mist systems. IWMA president is Max Lakkonen (IFAB). Head of the office is Bettina McDowell, who has been working for the organisation since 2012. Members of IWMA are, amongst others, manufacturers, distributors, insurance companies, scientific institutes etc. from countries all over the world. Since 1998 IWMA and its members are committed to water mist and its further development. They have seized opportunities, amongst those was a research project sponsored and organised by the IWMA on “Scaling of Fire Suppression Characteristics in Machinery Spaces” carried out on behalf of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Nowadays IWMA holds a consultative status at the IMO. In 2025, the organisation published their IWMA Water Mist Guide to explain the technology in detail. In 2020, The Matrix was developed. The Matrix is based on the known facts of water mist usage in different industries: marine, commercial buildings and industry including different types of facilities in these customer groups that may require active fire protection where water mist can be solution. The Matrix is a chart showcasing all current water mist applications and associated fire test protocols that have been published by certification/test agencies Members of the three IWMA committees (Board of Directors, Scientific Council and Marketing Group) as well as members act as representatives for the organisation in a number of expert and working groups as well as technical committees such as CEN TC 191 / WG 10, NFPA 750 and 25, VdS 3188 and IMO (International Maritime Organization). IWMA donate the annual “Ragnar Wighus Award” for the author of the best master or Ph.D. thesis.

Who’s Who – Fogmaker International AB

Fogmaker International AB, a leader in fire suppression systems for large scale applications and machinery, details the systems cooling and suppression benefits. Contact information: Sandvägen 4, 352 45 Växjö, Sweden +46 470 77 22 00 info@fogmaker.com Fogmaker.com Fogmaker International AB manufactures fire suppression systems for engine rooms and enclosed spaces. The company was founded in Växjö, Sweden, in 1995 and while its core activities and head-office are still there, Fogmaker has grown to having partners in 70 countries, three subsidiaries, and nearly 400,000 installed systems worldwide. Today, Fogmaker is recognised as an industry leader in safety awareness and the systems can be found everywhere from buses to combines to mining equipment. The system is always active, automatic, and independent of electricity and position. When the system detects a fire in the protected area, it deploys a water-based mist. Thanks to a combination of high pressure and specially designed nozzles, each water drop in the mist is divided into thousands of tiny droplets that together has a much larger surface area than regular drops. This means the mist can assimilate heat faster than regular water. It expands quickly, chokes the fire, and keeps cooling the area to prevent flare-ups. The cooling effect is imperative, especially with the current move towards electric vehicles where water-based mist has been identified as the preferred fire suppression method. A Fogmaker system is tailored to each type, make, model, and energy source – they all have different risk areas – and most systems are designed to cool between 35 and 90 seconds, but cooling times can be even longer. The system is the most tested and certified in the world and serves a wide range of sectors, including Buses, Mining, Material Handling, Forestry, Trucks, Construction Equipment, Agriculture, and Airports. The Fogmaker System The piston accumulator filled with extinguishant and nitrogen and pressurised to 100–105 bar is connected to a distribution system consisting of distribution hoses, distribution pipes and Fogmaker’s patented high-pressure water mist nozzles. The detector bottle filled with detector liquid and nitrogen, pressurised to 24 bar, is connected to a polymer detector tube. The piston accumulator and the detector bottle are interlinked via a patented release valve that keeps the piston accumulator closed if the pressure in the detection system is normal. If there is a fire, the detector tube bursts, the pressure falls in the detection system and the valve on the piston accumulator releases. As the system deploys, the pressure switch warns the driver through the alarm system. The extinguishant is pressed through the distribution system’s nozzles and a high-pressure water mist is spread throughout the protected volume. Absorbs heat: 1 litre of high-pressure water mist is converted into 1700 litres of water vapour by consuming 540,000 kilocalories. Fogmaker’s water mist contains drops so small that 8,000 of them fill out a normal-sized water drop.

Who’s Who – Firemiks AB

Firemiks AB is an innovative Swedish manufacturer of foam proportioners for the international marketplace that is actively solving the challenges of tomorrow. Contact information: Mätarvägen 9A, 196 37 Kungsängen +46 8 551 196 10  info@firemiks.com Firemiks.com Firemiks AB, founded in 1979 as a Swedish family business, has grown into a well-recognised name in the global fire and safety industry. Today, operated by the third generation and supported by strong industrial partners, the company continues to specialise in the development, production, and worldwide distribution of water-driven volumetric pump proportioning systems under the FIREMIKS brand. Firemiks takes pride in combining flexibility and precision—offering both customised solutions tailored to individual project requirements and a range of standard models designed to meet stringent international standards. At the heart of every FIREMIKS system is its simple and reliable operating principle. The units operate on the principle of positive displacement, where both the water motor, driven by the extinguishing water flow, and the concentrate pump, powered by the water motor, work in tandem to inject the concentrate into the water flow. This method ensures a precise dosing relationship determined by the volumetric interaction between the water motor and the concentrate pump. This dosing relationship remains largely unaffected by pressure, flow and viscosity variations, within the specified limits as detailed in each units’ performance data. The system operates efficiently with the extinguishing water as its sole power source, utilizing an atmospheric concentrate tank with gravity feed to the dosing pump. A cornerstone of the FIREMIKS design is the compact multi-vane volumetric water motor, first developed in the late 1970s and continually refined over the decades. This design provides an excellent balance between efficiency, durability, and size. For example, in a typical 3% proportioner, the water motor handles about 30 times the volume of the concentrate pump, all within a compact footprint. The modular approach allows Firemiks to match the water motor with a wide range of high-quality concentrate pumps, each chosen to suit different application needs and fluid properties. The transition from AFFF to SFFF presents significant challenges for the entire industry, particularly in handling different, including higher, viscosities. Regulatory bodies are mandating the shift to PFAS-free concentrates, which necessitates a reassessment of proportioning systems for compatibility. SFFF foams, often non-Newtonian and with viscosities ranging from 1cP to 5-6000cP, require a thorough understanding of their properties. Traditional proportioners struggle with accurate flow calculations under these new conditions. However, FIREMIKS systems, designed to accommodate a wide viscosity range, provide a reliable solution, handling also viscosities in the higher end of this range, without the need for constant recalibration, due to changes in temperatures, aging of the concentrate or future replacement to new concentrate with another viscosity Looking ahead, Firemiks AB is poised to adapt to further advancements in firefighting foam technology. The shift towards fluorine-free SFFF is expected to continue over the next 5-10 years. Additionally, there is a growing interest in lower dosing rates, such as 1% and even as low as 0.3% or 0.5%. Another major challenge is the development of systems capable of effectively extinguishing Li-Ion battery fires. Firemiks AB is committed to evolving its systems to meet these new requirements and ensure the highest standards of safety and performance in firefighting technology.
