PDE has introduced a new solution to a longstanding challenge in fire and emergency services: accessing roof-mounted gear quickly, safely, and without unnecessary strain.
Across many fire fleets, manual roof access is still the norm. This means firefighters often need to climb onto vehicles with heavy or awkward loads — a practice that slows response time and heightens the risk of injury. Some modern systems exist, but many come with payload restrictions that limit their usefulness in real-world conditions. PDE’s latest innovation offers a more capable alternative.
Their new ErgoBack rear deployment system is a purpose-built gantry that allows one person to raise or lower up to 150 kg of gear from ground level in under 30 seconds. With no need to climb, lift overhead, or coordinate multiple crew members, the system dramatically improves speed, safety, and independence on scene.
It’s also highly versatile. Designed for more than ladders, ErgoBack can handle a range of equipment including hoses, toolboxes, water tanks, stretchers, and even inflatable boats. It ensures fire crews can fully utilise roof space without compromising operational agility or crew safety.
Two deployment configurations are available. One allows ladders to reach the ground in a near-vertical position for easy solo removal. The other features an adjustable angle for positioning equipment at shoulder, hip, or head height — ideal for items like hose reels or containers. Importantly, rear access remains clear even when the system is open, ensuring crews can retrieve other gear without delay.
PDE offers ErgoBack in both manual and electric versions. The manual option uses a smooth-action handle, while the electric model offers remote control for full automation. Both are engineered for heavy-duty, professional use, supporting up to 500 kg in full-roof configurations.
For fire brigades juggling increasing operational pressure with high expectations for crew safety, this system offers a tangible step forward.
“Our mission has always been to protect the health and safety of professionals while helping them work faster and smarter,” says PDE COO Koen Bessemans. “With ErgoBack, we give them the ability to access critical equipment in under 30 seconds — without climbing, without strain, and without compromise.”
ErgoBack is set to make its public debut at The Emergency Services Show 2025, offering a new benchmark in efficiency-focused vehicle design.
