The Yorkshire and Humberside Branch of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) recently hosted a popular online event focused on the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR).
The session attracted significant interest from professionals across the fire safety and engineering sectors, making it the branch’s most well attended online seminar to date. The branch is also celebrating its very first anniversary this October, a milestone which the IFE hopes will be the beginning of many more to come.
The event provided a comprehensive overview of DSEAR 2002 legislation and its accompanying Approved Code of Practice (L138). Topics included when risk assessments are required, what constitutes a robust assessment and the qualifications and competence needed for those undertaking such responsibilities. The content aimed to equip attendees with both regulatory understanding and practical application guidance.
Speakers included Joe Hart, President of the IFE Yorkshire and Humberside Branch, and Steve McNorton, Senior DSEAR Consultant at Delta Fire Engineering. McNorton’s presentation, which combined technical depth with practical case-based insights, was especially well received by attendees.
The event reflects the IFE’s broader commitment to supporting continuing professional development (CPD) and encouraging best practice across fire safety disciplines. A recording of the online seminar will be made available through the IFE CPD Hub for those members unable to attend live.
Following the success of the DSEAR online seminar, the Yorkshire and Humberside Branch has announced its next online session for IFE members. Scheduled for October 14. This upcoming online seminar will focus on the fire risk appraisal of external wall systems, with reference to PAS 9980 and EWS (External Wall System) assessments—topics that remain central to post-Grenfell building safety reform efforts in the UK.
Date: Tuesday October 14, Time: 14:30 BST, Registration: Eventbrite – An Overview of Fire Risk Appraisal of External Walls & PAS9980 Methodology. Visit: here
