Fire-Dex donates PPE to Illinois Fire Service Institute

Fire-Dex, the fastest-growing manufacturer of PPE for first responders in the country, is donating nearly 15,000 nonsurgical AAMI Level 3 isolation gowns to the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) that will in turn distribute the garments to fire departments and EMS services statewide. As the ideal safety wear for medical calls and contamination events, the gowns provide enhanced protection against biological and environmental hazards. They can also be laundered and reused unlike many other disposable gowns. “The Illinois Fire Service Institute is grateful for the generosity of our valued partner, Fire- Dex,” says IFSI Director, Chief Jim Keiken. “It is through this partnership that we are able to distribute critical PPE to fire departments and regional medical facilities across Illinois. This donation is a testament to the importance of strong local, state and industry relationships.” Supporting Fire Service IFSI serves as America’s oldest continuous fire training, education and research institution tracing back to 1925. Fire-Dex—an enthusiastic supporter of IFSI’s mission to directly impact first responders’ work, health and safety—is proud to again put its resources behind the people who do lifesaving work with this latest donation totaling more than $500,000 in specialized protective clothing. Both MABAS Illinois, a state mutual aid organization, and Carle Health, an integrated system of local health care services and physician groups, will assist IFSI in allocating the donated PPE in the coming months: MABAS Illinois: The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) Illinois offers a statewide response system for fire, EMS and specialized incident teams. MABAS Illinois will distribute isolation gowns to Level B Hazardous Materials teams and to fire departments for use during large-scale contamination events. Carle Health: Based in Urbana, Illinois, Carle will help ensure that the gowns are used in emergency rooms and clinics across the state to reduce contamination risks to first responders Fit for the Front Lines Fire-Dex started production of AAMI-compliant isolation gowns and coveralls in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. These reusable garments have been tested to 100 wash, dry and sanitization cycles and far exceed Level 3 requirements. “We’re happy to continue our support of IFSI by putting these garments in the hands of those who will put them to best use,” says Jenny Surovey, VP of Marketing for Fire-Dex. “The Institute sits at the forefront of national training standards, and it is our privilege to assist fire service industry members with convenient access to top-quality PPE.” The standard isolation gown is a universal fit featuring elastic wrists and an adjustable tie back, while the coveralls are alpha sized and boast elastic wrists, ankles and a hood with an elastic facial opening. Mitrex introduces first fire-rated BIPV

Mitrex, a North American manufacturer of building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), is proud to announce the introduction of the world’s first fire-rated BIPV that has passed the most rigorous fire safety tests in the industry. The tests conducted by leading fire safety organisations include the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 285 and European Union’s EN 13501-1 with a classification of A2-s1,d0. Recent building fires, such as the Grenfell Tower in London, the Marina Torch in Dubai, and the Lacrosse Tower fire in Melbourne, have highlighted the importance of fire safety in buildings. These are just a few examples of high-rise buildings where the cladding is believed to have contributed to the rapid spread of fires. These tragedies have stressed the importance of fire safety in our infrastructure and protecting residents’ lives now and for years to come. Mitrex’s BIPV is designed to provide clean energy and the highest level of fire safety for the building and its occupants. The Mitrex BIPV system has been tested under the most severe conditions to ensure that it meets the highest fire safety standards. The tests included exposing the BIPV to direct flame, radiant heat, and smoke, simulating the worst-case scenarios of a building fire. The NFPA 285 standard is a full-scale wall assembly test that simulates the spread of fire through a multi-story building, and the EN 13501-1 standard is a fire classification system that categorises the fire performance of construction products and building elements where Mitrex obtained a classification of A2-s1,d0. Mitrex’s BIPV products passed all these tests proving that they can withstand even the most severe building fires. This is a major achievement for the company, as it demonstrates the safety and reliability of its BIPV products. “We are thrilled to offer BIPV solutions that provide clean energy generation without contributing to the spread of fires in the buildings they are incorporated,” said Danial Hadizadeh, CEO of Mitrex. “The rise of global crises due to climate change only increases the importance of all our structures being built safely, reliably, and durably. Passing these tests is a huge accomplishment for our company, and we are excited to share fire-rated BIPV products with our customers worldwide.” Mitrex’s BIPV products are designed to be integrated into the building envelope, providing both power and protection to buildings. Mitrex has been at the forefront of solar technology for many years, and this latest achievement is a testament to the company’s commitment to providing customers with the highest quality products. The cost of not getting it right the first time around

Words from Rebecca Croton, Quelfire Have you ever wondered why we charge what we do for our firestopping solutions? Stick with us and in this short article you will find out all about the Quelfire value proposition. Firstly, it is crucial to understand that our aim has never been to provide the cheapest products on the market, but to ensure the industry has high-quality, tested products alongside all the required support. With a robust testing programme, we have grown into a brand renowned for its scope of application within the construction industry, providing firestopping solutions for real-life scenarios, based on valued customer feedback and trends on the market. With an ever-growing library of tested details, this ensures that the industry has primary test evidence over engineering judgements. Therefore, the value lies in the cost of the tested system, not the cost of each individual product. We strongly believe that a building needs to be designed around tested details. To achieve this, we work in partnership with all parties involved in the design and management of the installation of firestopping systems to ensure they have all the tools and information to benefit them when making an informed decision about which solution to use, and how to install them. We also go above and beyond when educating the industry about the importance of fire safety and use every platform available to us; should it be panel discussions at exhibitions, CPD accredited webinars, or one-to-one consultations about early engagement in firestopping. So why is it worth paying for the more expensive products that come with all these benefits? Because the cost of not getting it right the first time around is far greater than choosing to work with a competent manufacturer that can support you with tested details and all the necessary technical support along the way. Any issues that come to light during the design and installation stage will inevitably cause extra costs and delays, extending the projected completion date. For example, if there is no tested solution at the design stage, you will need to go back and redesign; if products are installed incorrectly, these mistakes will have to be rectified; and if issues are found at the inspection stage, you’ll not only have to rethink the installation of the firestopping products, but the design of them, too. Ultimately, in worst case scenario, if errors are not identified during the final inspection stage and a fire breaks out when the building is already occupied, risking lives will be the price of cutting corners and not taking building safety seriously. Using the right product, with the suitable test evidence and guidance of the manufacturer will see firestopping designed and installed correctly. It may seem more expensive initially; however, money will be saved in the long run by choosing competency over cost and wanting to do it right the first time around. Let’s start prioritising life safety over cheaper products and money saved. To read more news and exclusive features see our latest issue here. IFE to support next generation of apprentices

Following the introduction of The Fire Safety (England) Regulations on 23 January, fire engineers are more in-demand than ever before and pivotal across all aspects of fire safety within the built environment. Changes to current legislation have increased obligations for responsible persons and as a result, public expectations are increasing. This has uncovered a huge need for competent and qualified professionals within the fire sector, demanding current professionals to upskill in order to meet the new demands within their roles. The Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE), partners of Fire Buyer Live, has joined forces with leading training facility, the Fire Service College, to boost the number of new entrants to the profession during National Apprenticeship Week. In a bid to drive recruitment and encourage young talent, the industry bodies are demonstrating the varied and diverse career opportunities that derive from apprenticeships. As the global professional membership body for fire engineers, the IFE is dedicated to supporting its members through legislative change and encouraging new talent to join the industry. As a testament to this, the institution recently made its student membership free of charge, providing the new talent pool with access to key resources and online continuing professional development (CPD). Keeping abreast of regulatory changes is vital in order to keep up to date with new ways of working and best practices within the fire industry. In the early stages of developing an Early Careers Networking Group, the IFE is tapping into their global community to encourage people into the fire sector. This will provide budding fire engineers at the Fire Service College with a platform to share knowledge, raise issues and network. As part of the apprenticeship pathway, every apprentice must successfully undertake an independent end-point assessment to confirm they have achieved occupational competence and capability. The IFE recognise the FSC’s end-point assessment as a route to membership and through working cohesively, this enables students to apply for Technician grade membership earning the post-nominals TIFireE. Commenting on the joint venture, CEO of the Institution of Fire Engineers, Fire Buyer Live speaker Steve Hamm, added: ‘It’s such an exciting time to join the industry. Through working with the Fire Service College, we are able to showcase clear pathways into the fire sector and how it offers a range of diverse opportunities. From mapping wildfires in the U.S. to developing hydrogen energy projects in Japan, not all roles lead to becoming a firefighter and fire engineers remain crucial in our mission to a sustainable and fire-safe future.” “As the international professional body for those in the fire sector, it’s our responsibility to offer inspiration, support and professional development to the next generation of fire engineering talent. Through offering free membership to apprentices and developing platforms for young talent, we’re showcasing our dedication to the next generation of fire engineers.” With academia remaining pivotal to evolving fire safety, The Fire Service College is also developing their academic modules to cover the new legislative framework. This will ensure recruits are competent and adaptive to the new enforcements. Remaining one of the top fire training facilities in the world, the college has plans in place to ensure learning experiences remain second to none. Learning Delivery and Transformation Director at the college, Clair Mowbray, commented “Our apprenticeship programme has been developed by sector experts, taking on board feedback from previous apprentices. All those who take part in an apprenticeship programme with us have access to world-class training facilities and experienced, highly qualified instructors. Our apprenticeships are a fantastic route into becoming a fire and rescue professional. “Apprenticeships also enable those from a diverse range of backgrounds and perspectives to access a career in the fire service, with different career paths available, including firefighter, community roles and Fire Safety.” To read more news and exclusive features see our latest issue here. Cradlepoint Expands 5G Portfolio

Cradlepoint, experts in cloud-delivered LTE and 5G wireless network solutions, announces the R2100 Series 5G Ruggedised Router, adding to Cradlepoint’s growing 5G Wireless WAN portfolio. Built for vehicle and IoT networks, the sleek exterior-mounted solution provides mass transit, public safety, and other organisations that require a high-bandwidth IoT or mobile router with the latest cellular performance in a uniquely flexible and simplified form factor. As in-vehicle applications have rapidly advanced, more use cases have emerged, along with diverse deployment requirements. Designed to be mounted on the rooftop of a vehicle or attached to IoT cabinet enclosures, the R2100 integrates the modem, antennas, and router into a single aerodynamic, IP67-rated casing that guards against weather, vibration, and shock. The R2100 is sold with or without Wi-Fi 6 and can be deployed as a self-contained router or to supplement an existing router as a 5G adaptor. Key benefits include: Simplified router installation: Since antenna cables are no longer needed, many vehicle installations will only require one power cable and a single small hole to the router on the roof. Organisations with large fleets can significantly reduce installation complexity and cost. Seamless 5G extension: Customers can add 5G to a current installation by deploying the R2100 in Captive Modem mode as an adaptor that is controlled by an attached Cradlepoint router. The NetCloud management system treats the R2100 as an internal modem; eliminating the need for a separate licence (saving the customer money) Streamlined Wi-Fi addition: Similar to Cradlepoint’s unique Captive Modem capability, the R2100 Series can serve as an additional Wi-Fi source in captive mode to expand coverage for applications such as video offload, enhanced customer broadband, Computer Aided Dispatch connectivity while in the station, and more. Adding this Wi-Fi capability won’t incur an additional expense as all control and licencing is attributed to the incumbent router. Straightforward 3rd party 5G add-on: The R2100 can take the form of a 5G adaptor that can be added to a third-party in-vehicle router via the WAN port. Easy edge computing with integrated containers: The R2100 is designed to support local containers for edge computing functionality. NetCloud handles container creation as well as container and workload distribution and connectivity, making deploying edge computing applications a simple and secure process. “Modern public safety operations leverage data to make operations safer and more effective, and the data demands in and around vehicles continue to grow,” said Ken Rehbehn, principal analyst at CritComm Insights. “Simplified integrated antenna form factors that bring high-performance 5G capabilities without running additional antenna cables will translate to reduced installation costs, faster installation, and improved radio performance.” “Organisations are entering the next phase of their transformations, extending their reach through vehicles that need reliable connectivity to access cloud-based applications,” said Donna Johnson, senior vice president of marketing at Cradlepoint. “The R2100 Series underscores how Cradlepoint is expanding the capabilities of today’s police, fire, EMS, and transit organisations, helping these agencies and first responders alike take advantage of 5G connectedness in a streamlined, more efficient way.” The R2100 Series 5G Ruggedised Router is powered by Cradlepoint NetCloud, providing an enterprise-class, unified edge security solution for in-vehicle and IoT networks. For example, NetCloud gives vital public service agencies end-to-end encryption, industry-leading threat detection, and defence functionality to enable secure direct cloud and internet access for applications and IoT devices, with or without Wi-Fi. The R2100 can also support the NetCloud Exchange services which provide Zero Trust Network Access and 5G Optimised SD-WAN. To read more news and exclusive features see our latest issue here.
