New President of MSA Americas

MSA Safety Incorporated, manufacturer of safety products and solutions that protect people and facility infrastructures, announced the promotion of Stephanie L. Sciullo to the position of President, MSA Americas. In this role, she succeeds Steve Blanco, who was recently elected President and Chief Operating Officer of the company. As President of the company’s Americas segment, Ms. Sciullo will assume responsibility for the company’s business interests in the United States, Canada, and Latin America. She will also continue to act as executive sponsor and spokesperson for the company’s corporate social responsibility programs. “Stephanie is a dynamic and highly transformative leader who has helped guide MSA through numerous periods of growth and change,” said Nish Vartanian, MSA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “She has helped the company solve some of our most challenging business issues. Prior to that, she directed the company’s insurance recovery efforts, resolving disputes regarding assets valued at more than $1 billion. Additionally, Ms. Sciullo led MSA’s efforts to divest a wholly-owned subsidiary that held legacy exposures, the single largest strategic transaction in the company’s 109-year history. Ms. Sciullo is a graduate from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in politics and philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh. She is also an alumna of Harvard Business School’s General Management Program. Prior to MSA Safety, Ms. Sciullo practiced law with Reed Smith, LLP. She has also served as adjunct faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University Schools of Law. Largest wireless installation: Solihull Community Housing

Kentec Electronics, a leading manufacturer of life-critical control systems, has announced the largest wireless installation to date across 37 high-rise towers owned and operated by Solihull Community Housing, providing residents with reliable, early warning fire detection and alarms.   Since the incident in Grenfell Towers, the local authority in Solihull has made fire prevention and safety a priority to better protect its residents in similar accommodation blocks.   Working closely with the West Midlands Fire Service, the installer, Early Birds Fire Protection, specified Kentec’s K-Mesh system both for its reliability and practicality. Some 2,000 apartments needed protecting across a five-mile radius. As a wireless system, it was quick and easy to install, with minimum disruption to local residents and cost to the housing association.   The system comprises some 4,000 sensors linked to a combination of Kentec’s award winning Taktis panels and Syncro AS analogue control panels, which are in turn linked to an alarm monitoring station. Such is the sophistication of the technology, that in the event of an alarm being raised, fire services and incident commanders are given an immediate view of exactly where smoke has been detected, and/or how far a fire may have progressed.   Given that each of the tower blocks has a single stairwell and point of exit, early warning of a fire is essential to ensure the safe evacuation of residents and help the emergency services to get to any incident faster.   Specifying a new fire safety solution was made more challenging by the mix of residents in particular buildings. Seven of the towers are designed specifically to accommodate residents aged 50 and above. An extensive consultation involving residents, staff, contractors and the local authority was undertaken to listen to their needs, and especially to understand the importance of early warning for residents living with a disability or dementia.   Derrick Hall, Director of Sales at Kentec Electronics, says the wireless capabilities of K-Mesh, and the interconnected system that it hosts, offer a number of advantages: “The advanced nature of K-Mesh means that the system is fully expandable, and futureproof, able to protect residents in large residential blocks now, and in the future,” he explains.   “Nothing on this size and scale has ever been installed before and its open protocol and ability to integrate with a full range of technologies – including the sprinkler systems – takes the concept of fire detection and safety to another level.”   Craig Puddefoot, Managing Director of Kentec’s installation partner Early Birds Fire Protection, says the project is on budget and due to be completed in good time: “A large project is going to plan with great success and minimal disruption to residents and staff. The wireless nature of the system makes it very easy to install, without the hassle of running live cables, reducing cost and adding complexity in the same process; all without damaging the fabric of the buildings.”   Steve Murray, Senior Project Manager for Solihull Community Housing, says the project has helped the team understand the trends and lifestyles of residents better, and the importance of early warning alarms within emergencies: “The insight gained by consulting with both residents and staff has been truly invaluable, with a tailored safety solution being the end result,” he explains.   “We are now able to provide opportunities to spot emergencies sooner, provide life-saving information to fire and emergency staff and keep our community safe.” To read the full article see our latest issue here. GFE chosen to protect Turkey’s health university

Following a competitive tender, Global Fire Equipment (GFE) Turkey, was chosen to design, supply, commission and install the fire detection and alarm system (FDAS) for Biruni University, Turkey’s largest comprehensive health and public health teaching university. The university, which is located in Istanbul’s city centre, is a private institution founded by the World Education Foundation, which supports education, health and cultural projects in Istanbul. 6,000 students are enrolled at Biruni University, including over 400 overseas students. Biruni University’s faculties include medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, health sciences, education, engineering and natural sciences. The university has a vast campus which spans an open area of 70,000 m2. The FDAS covers 20,000 m2 of buildings on the campus, including a 153-bed hospital, a dental healthcare facility, hi-tech labs, computer rooms and a campus library. On a typical day, 800 people will be on-site across the campus. The design, installation and commissioning of the fire detection system for Biruni University was undertaken by GFE Turkey. Given the size of the campus and the buildings that had to be protected, an addressable system with high-capacity loop panels was recommended as it would provide the optimal fire detection for the university’s buildings, students, staff and visitors. The chosen system comprises more than 1,100 GFE devices, including 1,000 ZEOS addressable smoke detectors, 20 ZEOS addressable heat detectors, 150 addressable manual call points and two addressable gas detectors, all of which all controlled through two of GFE’s addressable fire alarm control panels. When designing the system, GFE Turkey had to proactively manage a number of challenges, including elevators, pressurising fans, dampers and photocell doors. Also, as the project progressed, it became necessary to increase the number of zones covered by the FDAS due to the long distances between some of the buildings. Levent Aydın, Head of Support Services Directorate at Biruni University, comments: “We were very impressed by the expertise and technical support provided by GFE Turkey even before awarding them the contract. Their experts worked closely with our electricians who, although very technically competent, are not experts in fire detection. The team clearly understood the specific requirements of protecting a vast university campus and we are confident that the system they designed meets our needs not just today but also in the future due to the flexibility of the system to expand if we add new buildings. The installation and commissioning ran seamlessly, and we are now looking to set up an ongoing maintenance contract to ensure the system continues to operate at its optimal performance.” Murat Efir, Regional Director (Turkey and Balcans) at GFE, who operates out of GFE Turkey’s headquarters in Istanbul, adds: “GFE Turkey has been operating in Turkey since 2013 and it remains a strategically important country for GFE. We were delighted to be chosen for this project not just because we fully understood our customer’s requirements and were able to meet them, but also because of our technical expertise and how user friendly our system is compared to alternative systems they looked at. WAGNER awarded the product of the year 2023

For the 13th time in 2023, the most popular products in fire protection were honored with the “Product of the Year” award from FeuerTrutz Network. In the category “Plant Fire Protection”, WAGNER Group was able to convince the jury with its fire protection solution for the storage of lithium-ion batteries. Reiner Milski, Managing Director of WAGNER Deutschland, received theaward at the trade show FeuerTrutz in Nuremberg on June 21. WAGNER implemented the awarded, unique fire protection solution, for an automated high-bay warehouse of KETTLER Alu-Rad GmbH, in which up to 50,000 e-bikes are packed ready for shipment and stored with installed batteries. High-bay warehouses are basically threatened by various fire risks. Lithium-ion batteries of stored ebikes increase the fire risk considerably, because they bear the danger of self-ignition. The fire-related release of oxygen can lead to thermal runaway – a high risk when storing e-bikes with lithium-ion batteries. Based on a risk assessment of the protected area, the individual protection goals – such as maintaining the ability to deliver – were defined with KETTLER Alu-Rad GmbH. With the help of extensive fire tests, the experts from WAGNER developed the ideal solution. It consists of the oxygen reduction system OxyReduct®, the TITANUS® fire detection system for early fire detection, and organizational measures. Under defined conditions, this solution protects against the consequences of a thermal runaway, prevents the spread of a fire and thus protects against an interruption of operations and the associated consequential damage. This solution is unique on the market and one of the first VdS-approved fire protection solutions for the storage of lithium-ion batteries. On receiving the award, Reiner Milski was extremely pleased: “The storage of these energy storage devices is demanding from a fire protection point of view, and there is no standard solution for this. Thanks to the excellent cooperation of all parties involved and with the help of our comprehensive fire tests, we have found an ideal and groundbreaking solution for KETTLER that gives our customer security and protects its assets. King County International Airport purchases Oshkosh vehicles

Oshkosh Airport Products, a division of Pierce Manufacturing, a subsidiary of Oshkosh Corporation, announces King County International Airport-Boeing Field (KCIA) has signed a purchase agreement for the revolutionary Striker® Volterra™ 6×6 Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) hybrid electric vehicle. KCIA will be the first airport in the nation to receive this environmentally advanced fire engine, adding to its existing Oshkosh Airport Products fleet and allowing for the retirement of aging fire apparatus. Leveraging Oshkosh Corporation’s cutting-edge proprietary technology, the Striker Volterra ARFF hybrid electric vehicle meets the critical emergency response requirements of airports while aligning with environmental sustainability goals. The Striker Volterra 6×6 comes equipped with an Oshkosh patented hybrid-electric drivetrain, featuring an electro-mechanical infinitely variable transmission. ASFP appoints a new Chair and Vice Chair at AGM

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) appointed a new Chair and Vice Chair at its 2023 Annual General Meeting at Hatfield House, Hertfordshire on the 7 June. Clive Miles of CLM Fireproofing became the Chair, taking over from Chris Miles who stood down following the completion of his two-year term. Sharon McClure of Avesta Scotland was proud to be elected as the ASFP’s first female Vice Chair. Having founded CLM 30 years ago, Clive brings extensive experience of delivering passive fire protection (PFP) solutions to some of the UK’s most iconic buildings. He is passionate about driving best practice, developing and investing in people and championing innovation across the PFP sector. Commenting on his appointment, Clive outlined the key challenges the industry faces and his vision for taking the ASFP forward: “Increased pressures from legislation, media coverage, insurances and skill shortages are driving unprecedented transformation in the sector. The ASFP and our members have to evolve in new and innovative ways in order to adapt to this new, ever-changing world. “The industry is suffering both from an ageing workforce and a skills shortage and more needs to be done to attract and retain young professionals. Through a combination of apprenticeships, academies and outreach programmes we can help secure the next generation of our profession. “By creating and implementing new ways to train, engage and promote PFP, we can ensure the ASFP becomes the industry benchmark for ‘educational best practice’.” He welcomed Sharon into her role as Vice Chair, recognising her long experience in the industry and her input to the ASFP’s development, having served on its Council for several years. Sharon has worked in the PFP industry since 2006, joining Avesta in 2010. She is the Scottish Representative for the ASFP within BuildUK (BuildScotland) and Chair of the Ayrshire Construction Training Group. Having played an active role on the ASFP Council Sharon is keen to further develop the PFP sector, promote competency and improve quality throughout the built environment. She wants to ensure the construction sector learns from the mistakes of the past and that passive fire and other key elements of construction are considered in a timely manner. This popular annual networking event offered ASFP members and guests an opportunity to receive news of ASFP activities and hear about the Association’s future plans. It also featured regulatory updates and a keynote speech from Aman Sharma – CEO, Totus Digital and Past Deputy Chair of the Building Regulations Advisory Committee – on how digital innovation can deliver the ‘Golden Thread’ of information to improve building safety. English Heritage trial Aico’s HomeLINK

English Heritage cares for over 400 historic buildings, monuments and sites – from world-famous prehistoric sites to medieval castles. Across these 400 sites are thousands of buildings and spaces which need to be covered by a reliable fire and (CO) system as well as being easy to manage from a repairs and maintenance perspective. To help them overcome the geographical challenges of managing large estates, English Heritage have opted to trial Aico’s HomeLINK Connected Home Solution which consists of Aico’s Ei1000G Gateway, smoke alarms and Ei1025 Environmental Sensors at one of their sites in Yorkshire, Pickering Castle. Pickering Castle resides in the North York Moors-Edge market town of Pickering. This 13th century castle has been used through the centuries and now contains a variety of buildings including a ticket office, chapel, classroom and toilet block. The system installed provides fire detection in the various buildings connected to the Ei1000G Gateway which tracks when events are triggered within the alarm system. Device events are processed by the Gateway as they occur and are reported to the HomeLINK Portal via its GSM connection. Events such as fire alarms, button tests, mains absence, faults, removal of the alarm head and end of life are all reported to the HomeLINK Portal. English Heritage can also set up notifications when events are triggered via email or text message. This information is valuable to those managing a dispersed estate as it ensures they are informed of any events in the system. Dan Little, National Sales Manager at Aico says “It has been great working with the English Heritage; their portfolio of properties is undoubtedly different to those we typically work with. That being said, they still face the same asset management challenges around maintenance and compliance. Seeing the Aico technology in these environments shows its versatility and ability to help solve unique problems.” In addition to fire detection, English Heritage is exploring the use of the Ei1025 Environmental Sensors which monitor temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide levels. Wirelessly connected to the Ei1000G Gateway, these sensors are easy to install and come with a 10-year lithium battery. Monitoring these conditions creates a better maintained, healthier and more energy efficient space where condensation, damp, mould and indoor air quality are being considered. Ashley Hardy, Estates Manager (North) commented  “The technological advancements in Aico’s Gateway enable us to monitor vast and disperse sites in real time. The technology provides us with the confidence and assurance that our sites are adequately protected. Should anything happen the Gateway responds immediately and notifies us of potentially hazardous scenarios such as if the detector has been removed or loss of power. In addition to this, we are able to remotely monitor our sensitive historic properties for environmental factors such as humidity, heat loss and air quality. Providing insights into potential trends in the use of the building and delivering accurate data to enable us to counteract potentially harmful or unfavourable conditions. Streamlight launches updated rechargeable spotlight

Streamlight a provider of high-performance lighting, have launched the Waypoint 400, an updated model of the Waypoint 300. The new version of the rechargeable pistol-grip spotlight offers up to 1,400 lumens of ultra-bright white light with 400,000 candela and a beam distance of 1,265 metres for enhanced down-range lighting capability. The portable light can be used as either a handheld mobile searchlight, or, with its integrated stand, as a hands-free scene light to illuminate an area. “The new Waypoint 400 not only features extreme brightness, but also includes a far-reaching beam for extreme distance lighting,” said Michael F. Dineen, Streamlight’s Chief Revenue Officer. “It features a waterproof design, and will float if dropped in water, making it the ideal spotlight for boating and other outdoor pursuits. Industrial workers, police and fire professionals and other first responders also will appreciate its weight-balanced design that virtually eliminates hand fatigue.” The Waypoint 400 uses power LED technology and a deep-dish parabolic reflector for long-range targeting with optimum peripheral illumination. On the high setting, it features 400,000 candela, a 1,265-metre beam distance, and 1,400 lumens. On medium, it provides 600 lumens and an 812-metre beam distance; on low it offers 38 lumens and a beam distance of 200 metres. The new light runs for 3.25 to 84 hours on high and low, respectively. The Waypoint 400 uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that fully charges in four hours. A convenient LED charging indicator provides charging status. The rugged Waypoint 400 features an unbreakable polycarbonate lens and is O-ring sealed. With a trigger-style switch for momentary or “constant-on” operation, the light boasts a cushioned grip handle that eliminates user hand fatigue. The light includes an adjustable, high-strength wrist lanyard, and features an integrated stand for hands-free lighting. The lightweight Waypoint 400 weighs 691g and measures 17.15cm long by 18.14cm high. It features an IPX8-rated design for waterproof operation to two metres and is impact-resistant to one metre. US Fire Pump Extinguishes Naptha Tank Fire

On June 3, US Fire Pump’s Emergency Response Team, renowned experts in industrial firefighting, demonstrated its exceptional capabilities when called into action to extinguish a formidable 150′ Naptha tank fire in Lake Charles, Louisiana caused by a lightning strike. Utilizing the revolutionary Dwight’s Signature Series 1 X 3 AR-AFFF foam, the US Fire Pump team achieved a resounding success in tackling the blaze. The firefighting operation presented unique challenges due to the presence of an internal floating roof which collapsed in the tank. The fire was located both above and below the roof, obstructing access to the critical areas that required foam application. However, utilizing foam specifically engineered for such demanding scenarios, proved to be the ultimate solution. By employing a film forming foam application, US Fire Pump Emergency Responders were able to successfully reach crucial areas, enabling the efficient extinguishment of the fire. This remarkable achievement marks another milestone for US Fire Pump and our Signature Series Foam products, which has now successfully extinguished multiple major fires. Besides the renowned 3M® ATC foam, Signature Series stands as the only other foam to successfully extinguish fires in tanks 150′ or larger. Signature Series foam was purposefully designed with these high-risk incidents in mind, undergoing rigorous testing to meet the stringent requirements of UL certification at a .75% proportioning. This remarkable achievement not only provides confidence to the operators on the scene but also allows for a margin of error, ensuring the utmost safety in critical situations. Following the successful extinguishment, US Fire Pump deployed Signature Series Vapor Suppressant Product (VSP) for post-extinguishment operations. The application of VSP not only offers effective vapor suppression but also delivers substantial cost savings for the customer. As a fluorine-free product, VSP outlasts traditional firefighting foam in its ability to control and mitigate vapors, making it a superior choice for long-term vapor suppression.
