Exhibitor Profile – Sense-WARE

Sense-WARE was founded in 2001 by Jan Nijkamp, who had previously worked directly for and as a distributor for various mainstream Flame Detector companies.  

Recognising the need for a lower cost Test Lamp than the mainstream Flame Detector manufacturers were offering, Jan set out to design and manufacture the first Sense-WARE product, which was the T-229/4P Universal Test Lamp.  

Designed for use in Safe Areas to test most UV, Single IR and UV/IR Flame detectors, and still very popular with the Marine Industry, the Universal Test Lamp remains an important part of the Sense-WARE product line. Jan was later joined by Alfred Draijer, who provided the second half of the engineering team. 

At the time, the majority of Flame Detectors available were designed for the Oil, Gas and Petrochemical industries, and were explosion proof for Zone 1 applications. They were also very expensive when used for other onshore applications that do not require a Zone 1 device.   

In response, product development continued and seeing the increasing demand for a cost-effective alternative to Zone 1 Flame Detectors, in 2012, Sense-WARE introduced the 210 series of Flame Detectors. Initially UV and UV/IR Flame Detectors were introduced and in 2015 they were followed by an IR3 Flame Detector.  

All Sense-WARE Flame Detectors have been successfully tested by international approval authorities, including FM and Atex, and have many local approvals around the world. The 210 series of Flame Detectors are the core product line for Sense-WARE and have been installed worldwide in a wide-ranging variety of Zone 2 and Safe Area applications. 

Sense-WARE has always valued its independence in an industry where most legacy Flame Detector companies have been acquired by multinational conglomerates. Right from the start, Sense-WARE understood the need for the highest quality manufacturing standards, and whereas most companies in the industry decided to manufacture their own products, Sense-WARE partnered with Cimar Electronics to take care of the manufacturing and testing of the Flame Detectors and Test Lamps.  

This partnership has produced an extremely close working relationship and has enabled Sense-WARE to maintain very cost-effective pricing for its products. These high standards of design and manufacture, approved to ISO9001, enabled Sense-WARE, in 2019, to increase the product warranty from 3 years to 5 years, something that was unheard of at the time in this market sector. 

In 2019, Sense-WARE branched out into the Asia Pacific market, followed by the Americas in 2021 and the Middle East in 2024. Jan and Alfred retired in 2023, and Sense-WARE was acquired by Cimar Electronics, and the Sense-WARE offices are now located in the new Cimar factory, providing even closer liaison with their long-term partners.  

Cimar has increased engineering facilities, as well as growing the sales and marketing operations, cementing the place of Sense-WARE as the leading company for Zone 2 and Safe area Flame Detectors. 

2026 will be the 25th anniversary of the company and Sense-WARE is looking forward to the next 25 years!
