It’s also equipped with two laser modules, in the form of a visible laser pointer for intuitive target marking, plus a laser distance meter to measure distance to objects on-screen. This means a responder can point to a specific pipe or heat source, measure the distance and relay that information clearly during rescue or inspection missions. These latest portability innovations from HIKMICRO are backed up by high performance and established handheld thermal camera options, with eight colour palettes and for observing in total darkness and smoke. The compact and cost effective FB21 features a highly sensitive (NETD < 40 mK) Vox detector and optimized image enhancement algorithms, with a class-leading 3.2” colour LCD screen and is IP65 rated for protection against water and dust. It’s the ideal handheld thermal imager for frontline firefighters and volunteers. Fogmaker International AB has announced the launch of its section valve, which offers targeted fire suppression for vehicles with several critical compartments. Traditionally, a fire suppression system can handle only one deployment zone with one piston accumulator. The section valve will be able to handle up to four different deployment zones with the same piston accumulator. The valve has the potential of revolutionising fire suppression for commercial electrical vehicles. A vehicle or machine with a diesel engine has most of the fire hazards in one single compartment, but due to basic design criteria for battery electric vehicles, for instance an electric bus can have fire risks in several places. The new valve addresses this challenge by covering up to four individual deployment zones, directing the fire suppressant to where it is needed and buying crucial time when it’s needed the most. The section valve will be particularly useful for battery-electric buses. “With the section valve, the system offers cooling for two minutes. This is vital time when evacuating a bus” says Carl Zandler, responsible for the bus segment at Fogmaker International. “The time can easily be increased to four minutes. This is a valuable window in any evacuation scenario.” Electric buses are rapidly becoming the backbone of modern public transport, and the intelligent, responsive fire suppression solution addresses the greatest safety concern of the BEV (battery-electric vehicle) era, bridging the critical gap between fire onset and passenger evacuation. The Northern Ireland Branch of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) has held a successful Heritage Fire Day at Castle Ward, drawing a strong turnout from across the fire safety, conservation and heritage sectors. The one-day event explored the complex challenges of protecting historic buildings from fire while maintaining their character and integrity. Set within the 18th-century National Trust property, the session featured four expert speakers who shared professional insight into fire risk management for heritage assets. Opening the event, fire engineer Mabel Higgins discussed Historical Building and Compliance with Legislation, drawing on more than two decades of experience in both public and private construction sectors. She was followed by Andrew Nicholson, a chartered fire engineer with over 25 years of experience, who presented How to Develop a Fire Strategy for a Heritage Building. His address underlined the importance of detailed risk assessments, effective stakeholder engagement and sympathetic interventions to preserve architectural heritage. Tony Burridge, Operational Risk Business Partner for Fire Wales and Northern Ireland, then outlined how the National Trust manages fire safety across its extensive property portfolio. His presentation highlighted the operational complexity of safeguarding a mix of residential, commercial and historic sites. Concluding the event, Steve Emery of Heritage Fire Consultancy delivered Extinction Alert – The Nuts and Bolts of Historic Doors, examining the essential role of timber doors in fire protection and the balance between preservation and performance. Delegates used the opportunity to network, exchange ideas and reinforce the need for collaborative solutions in the protection of heritage properties. NFPA Global Solutions, an independently operated and wholly owned subsidiary of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), along with Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority (ADCDA) have announced a project to develop an integrated fire prevention system in Abu Dhabi. The project will build on collaborative work between NFPA and ADCDA over the past several years and will focus on a new, multi-phased approach to align Abu Dhabi’s safety infrastructure with the NFPA Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem model. The project will assist ADCDA in establishing a foundational baseline for the ecosystem, developing processes to localise codes and standards, and defining a long-term vision for the system’s future state. “We are proud to partner with ADCDA on this critical initiative,” said Carlos Correia, President at NFPA Global Solutions. “This project underscores the commitment that the government of Abu Dhabi is making to safety in the region. Our longstanding relationship with ADCDA enables us to work closely together to bring the protection of life and property to new heights.” NFPA created the ecosystem in 2018 as a framework on how to reduce fire loss collectively and collaboratively. The model is made up of eight interconnected cogs that must work together to protect people and property. Every part is essential; if any component fails tragedies can occur. As a well-known thought leader in safety in the Middle East, Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority is taking an important step by implementing the NFPA Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem. “Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority has a forward-thinking leadership that is building a strategy around all elements of the Fire & Life Safety Ecosystem to achieve real-world results,” said Jim Pauley, NFPA president and CEO, and board chair for NFPA Global Solutions. TLX Technologies says that its Supervised Direct-Acting Solenoid Valve has recently completed UL testing and is now a UL 429 and UL 429A Recognised Component. This component is designed for clean agent, inert gas, CO2, and hybrid systems that rely on valve-integrated actuation. Alternatively, the valve body can be configured for selector valve usage. This solenoid valve features the same patented integrated supervision as the company’s family of linear electric actuators for fire suppression, meets NFPA 2001: Sec. 4.3.4.1 and EN 15004-1 supervision requirements, and eliminates the need for an additional supervisory component and electrical connection. This solution is composed of a removable coil assembly and a threaded valve body. The coil housing is made from electroless nickel-plated carbon steel, and the valve body can be made from either brass or stainless steel, depending on the requirements of your system. In its standard configuration, the valve body contains a release valve and can be specified with either 1/8” or 1/4” NPT threads. When configured for a selector valve, the valve body is modified to act as a simple coupler and can be fully customised to fit the selector valve. The coil assembly freely rotates for easy installation and features a captured fastener to prevent misplacement of the fastener when the coil is removed for testing and maintenance. The fastener also ensures full placement of the coil on the valve body, giving technicians confidence that installation is complete. Head protection specialist KASK has updated its Quantum series of helmets. Developed as KASK’s first helmet series for wildland firefighting, technical and mountain rescue, Quantum now extends its protection capabilities to water rescue, when equipped with Quantum protection panels. With Quantum, KASK says it has created a benchmark for rescue and wildland firefighting helmets, designing a solution shaped by the evolution of rescue and climbing helmets, advances in material technology, and the continuously evolving challenges of technical operations and natural disaster scenarios. To meet the demanding needs of emergency response, Quantum was developed to meet three key European standards: Wildland Firefighting (EN 16471), Technical Rescue (EN 16473), and Mountaineering (EN 12492). It now also complies with EN 1385 standard for canoeing and white-water sports, when the Quantum protection panels are mounted. This challenged the team to address the unique risks faced in critical operations including impact absorption, durability, and compromised environments, while also ensuring helmet stability, comfort, and usability. The Quantum helmet achieves these objectives through an innovative fire and chemical-resistant Polycarbonate external shell, a high density EPS internal shell with a thermoformed polystyrene cover, and an Adaptive Fit system that can be easily adjusted even with gloved hands. The Quantum Series was awarded the iF Design Award 2023 for Design Excellence by the iF International Forum Design. This award further recognises the Italian company’s commitment to developing advanced products that prioritise user needs, deliver tangible benefits, and embody exceptional design, reinforcing the brand’s motto: ‘Performance is a beautiful thing’. When designing Quantum, key consideration was given to the wide range of uses that a fire and rescue helmet operates in. This opened the door to the integration of a more performance-oriented, application-based design, and addresses the high-risk nature of emergency response. Quantum was designed drawing upon proven KASK expertise in high performance head protection from its cycling, snow sports, equestrian and industrial safety lines. Safety is ensured thanks to the polycarbonate (PC) external shell that allows for higher impact resistance in a range of temperatures, higher heat and flame resistance and greater chemical resistance. The expanded polystyrene internal shell guarantees all around impact energy absorption and improved comfort. The EPS is covered with thermoformed polystyrene for increased durability and easier cleaning and decontamination. Wearer comfort is provided by an inner padding made of multilayer fabric with Moisture-wicking technology and exceptionally soft textiles. It can be easily removed or replaced using the Click-In system. In addition, the Adaptive Fit system adapts to head shapes to create a personalised, secure fit. Quantum is available in either a closed shell version or a Cabrio configuration with 14 vents for enhanced air-flow and cooling comfort for the wearer. The vents are fitted with anti-intrusion metal mesh covers to prevent debris from entering the ventilation channels. Quantum Cabrio is also equipped with a sliding closure system.
