Over 20 acres of land consumed by grass fires in Smith County, Texas, America

The Smith County, Texas fire departments had a very busy day on the 25th January, with grass fires running rife through the area.
20 acres of farmland was left blackened and destroyed, as a farmer attempted to burn his excess hay and lost control of the blaze. Before the fire reached the five threatened structures, the Winona and Red Springs fire departments were successfully able to extinguish the blaze.
However, after that fire was put out, as the department were on their way back to the station, they saw a controlled burn start to get out of hand.
“I had a little fire extinguisher but it stopped spraying, and we started using a rake trying to put it out, and water bottles,” Dwayne Allen says.
Allen was hired to burn excess rubbish behind a home, however, out of nowhere, the fire began to spread and ploughed through everything in its path.
“There was a mobile home there and we were just burning the trash that was left behind but the grass is so dry it just started spreading,” Allen says.
Captain Adam Melson, of the Smith County ESD, told all property owners to take extreme caution with fire, due to the combination of high winds and high humidity.
