NFPA Announces Re-Launch of its Website

The National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) has re-launched its new website – NFPA.org – to provide a more seamless path for stakeholders to interact with the association. The redesigned site, with its dynamic design, improved site performance, and enhanced content, focuses on the organization’s mission to eliminate death, injury, property, and economic loss due to fire, electrical, and related hazards. A “For Professionals” section ensures the NFPA standards development process is simple to follow and makes finding standards-related information, revision cycle news, notifications, and technical committee assignments easier. A new customer support section provides answers to many customer questions, from member benefits and product specifications to billing and payment terms and standards-related information, minimizing the need to directly contact the association. Content available in both English and Spanish using a more dynamic translation platform, which will allow the association to provide future content in multiple languages to support its growing global audiences. Enhanced self-service account options, providing NFPA customers with a more convenient shopping and account maintenance experience. Kenyon Emergency Services expands leadership team

Kenyon Emergency Services, the provider of disaster response services, part of the global aviation services group, Air Partner, announced the appointment of six new emergency planning and crisis communications experts to enhance the company’s global disaster response and crisis communications services. Shabita Sumaraj has been appointed Kenyon’s Head of Humanitarian Services. Based in the company’s UK headquarters in Bracknell, Shabita has extensive first-hand experience of Emergency Response Planning. In her previous role as Head of Operations at a GP Federation in Surrey, she successfully led the role out of a vaccination programme which delivered over a million vaccinations while also running the daily operations at multiple sites. Shabita also has over 18 years’ experience in the aviation industry, having worked with Cathay Pacific in a variety of roles including overseeing emergency preparedness for 14 ports across 11 countries in Europe. Joining Shabita in the UK headquarters is Dean Trussler who will serve as Kenyon’s Head of Crisis Management Centre and Preparedness. A former Marine, Dean has spent the last 20 years as an Emergency Planner, Consultant and Business Continuity & Resilience Manager, working with a number of Local Authorities, media organisations and Gama Aviation. Dean brings significant experience of designing and operating emergency planning, policies and management. He moves to Kenyon from his most recent position as Head of Emergency Planning and Operational Resilience at the George Eliot Hospital, Warwickshire. Kenyon Emergency Services has over 117 years’ experience of successfully navigating and managing complex international crises, including setting up and staffing the Family Assistance Centre in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It also provided communications support during a major aviation incident, efficiently responding to the plethora of family and media enquiries with care and tact. As a leader in its field, Kenyon is committed to constantly strengthening its team and service offering, including growing its international crisis communications offering. Bolstering the company’s crisis communications team is the appointment of Susan Brown as Kenyon’s new Vice President of Crisis Communications. He has since worked in local emergency planning, making him an experienced communicator in emergency and crisis situations. Arielle Sklar is a Senior Communicator at Yale New Haven Health System. UK-born Eleanor Bancroft has served in many communications roles throughout her career. Beginning her career at the BBC in London, she was also Communications Manager at OFCOM, the UK media, telecoms and internet regulator. Since moving to the US, Eleanor worked in financial crime analysis as well as non-profits before joining 3AM Innovations, a tech company specialising in solutions for first responders. Preparing Fire Safety for 2024 with Checkmate

Checkmate provides an overview of fire safety in 2024. Fire safety should always be a priority. But as the end of the year draws closer, now’s a good time to assess risks and make preparations for the year ahead. Here, we cover crucial points to consider for 2024, from fire risk assessment reviews and training, to fire extinguisher checks and services. Finally, we’ll give an overview of the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, that came into force on 23rd January 2023. Fire risk assessment reviews and training Fire risks are ever changing, so fire risk assessments must be continually reviewed. Any significant changes made to a premises must be identified and recorded in the fire safety log book during a fire risk assessment. Changes might take the form of new risk, for example, staff reductions creating new responsibilities, or having more material onsite thanks to a surge in demand. It’s the duty of the responsible person to ensure that should they be absent, there are enough trained people onsite to assist with fire safety. Business owners may have to stagger shifts, for example. If that’s the case, is there a trained person available at all times? Key fire safety equipment Fire safety signage: Before the year ends, a walk around the building can help check that all appropriate fire safety signage is installed and visible to the building’s users. Fire safety signage is a legal obligation that ensures people can escape the building safely in the event of an emergency. Fire safety signs provide instruction and continued reassurance along an escape route. For even further assurance that all users of the building understand what’s expected of them during an evacuation, regular fire drills are recommended. This is particularly important at a time when an emergency escape plan is under regular review. Fire extinguishers and storage Business owners must ensure the right type of fire extinguishers are on site – it’s paramount that these are stored securely and protected from harsh weather . For areas with extreme levels of footfall and exposure, the newly launched Commander Stand Inserts provide additional protection for 2kg CO2, 6ltr/kg and 9ltr/kg fire extinguishers. Simply place the inserts into the base of the Commander Stand and slot the fire extinguishers in. Fire extinguisher checks and maintenance To comply with British Standards, fire engineers should be brought onsite to carry out compulsory annual fire extinguisher servicing. This competent, fully trained technician will check the fire extinguishers are in good working order, as well as confirm the fire extinguisher type and location is correct. Fire extinguisher maintenance by a competent person should be treated with huge importance – they’ll ensure compliance with the law, after all. Year gauge indicator dots are used to specify when the fire extinguisher last underwent a service, while service labels are used by engineers to record fire extinguisher testing and provide details of the date and corresponding information. Pull-tite seals (also known as anti-tamper seals) indicate whether a fire extinguisher has been used, tampered with, or accidentally discharged. This low-cost solution is easy to fit and easy to break off in an emergency. Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 On 23rd January 2023, the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 came into force. These regulations seek to improve fire safety in high-rise residential buildings and other multi-occupied residential buildings. The regulations pose new duties on the responsible persons to improve the safety of residents, while providing useful information to the fire and rescue service (FRS) to support an emergency response. To comply with the new regulations, the responsible persons of high-rise residential buildings must ensure: A secure information box is installed and maintained in or outside the building. This must be accessible to local fire and rescue authority and include the name, address and UK telephone number of the responsible person. A record of the design of the building’s external walls is prepared. This must include details of the materials from which they are constructed, the level of risk these materials or design may give rise to, and the risk reduction steps made in response to these. Plans are prepared for each floor of the high-rise building, identifying all lifts, key fire-fighting equipment in the building, access points, main stairways, and other relevant information about the building. Documents must also be provided to local fire and rescue authorities. Monthly routine check of lifts, fire alarms, and other fire safety equipment, as well as clear markings of floor identification in the form of signage. Fire safety instructions are prominently displayed. A copy of these instructions, alongside information about fire doors, must be given to all residents every 12 months, and all new residents as soon as possible after they move in. Enhancing Fire Safety in a Specialised SEN School

A dedicated team from SOCOTEC UK’s Fire Engineering division played a vital role in providing fire consultancy services for the construction of a specialised SEN School. This institution caters to approximately 150 children aged four to nineteen with complex social and communication needs, ensuring a high-quality education through specialist facilities and adaptive teaching techniques. The SOCOTEC team was actively involved in constructing a two-storey L-shaped school block, housing classrooms, a nursery, a kitchen, dining facilities, and staff amenities. Additionally, contributions extended to the construction of a single-storey sports block, featuring a fitness studio, court hall, changing rooms, and storage areas. Throughout the project, SOCOTEC provided a range of fire consultancy services, developing fire safety strategies during the design stages and offering ad-hoc advice during construction. A tailored fire safety strategy was devised considering the unique needs of the occupants, with innovative design approaches to address potential challenges. To accommodate the specific requirements of SEN occupants, traditional warning alarm sounders were replaced with voice-based alarms, providing clear instructions for effective evacuation. Pre-evacuation alerts for staff members, multi-tone sounders for flexible alarm tones, and the design of common corridors as protected escape routes were implemented to enhance safety during evacuations. The width of escape routes was increased to account for the occupants’ needs and potential evacuation challenges. Key features of the fire safety strategy for this SEN School include: Early warning system for staff members to respond promptly during emergencies Multi-tone alarm system offering flexibility in alarm tones, minimising disturbance to occupants Protected escape routes throughout the school to enhance safety during evacuations Wider escape routes to compensate for potential increased evacuation times associated with the occupants’ needs. With a commitment to safety and well-being, SOCOTEC Fire Engineering played a crucial role in constructing this specialised SEN School, ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for all occupants. New Managing Director for WAGNER Fire Safety Consulting

WAGNER Fire Safety Consulting GmbH is pleased to welcome new Managing Director Cecil von Dungern to its management team. He joined the subsidiary of WAGNER Group GmbH at the beginning of the year. After a transition period of three months, Andreas Erbe will leave the company for personal reasons on March 31, 2024. Cecil von Dungern has many years of international experience in management positions at Siemens AG and was most recently Managing Director at a financial services provider. In his position at WAGNER Fire Safety Consulting, he will focus on the worldwide expansion of the Global Account Management. “We are observing the increasing relevance of globally operating companies in some of our focus industries. With WAGNER Fire Safety Consulting GmbH, we have specialized in providing these internationally operating companies with both, individual and holistic advice and support in the area of fire safety, in order to implement consistent standards in the companies worldwide. We are delighted to have found in Mr. von Dungern an internationally experienced sales expert for this important business area at our subsidiary,” explains Dipl.-Ing.
