NFPA launches Fire Protection Engineering Support Fund

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the leading information and knowledge resource on fire, electrical and related hazards, has created the NFPA Fire Protection Engineering Support Fund to further fire protection engineering (FPE) education and research at Oklahoma State University, the University of Maryland and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). NFPA has given many fire protection awards over the course of its 120-year history in the name of fire safety trailblazers, but this support marks the first time that the non-profit organization has committed funds to provide ongoing investment in the future of fire protection engineering. At a time of unprecedented demand for leadership in FPE education, the NFPA funds will directly help these universities recognize fire protection engineering and research students who are tackling today’s most pressing fire protection challenges. “We applaud these three universities and their students for their commitment to protecting people and property,” said Kathleen Almand, NFPA’s vice president of research. “As the leading global advocate for fire prevention and research, we’re committed to actively supporting future innovators.” Each institution will distribute awards to students who have demonstrated a strong aptitude and passion for fire protection engineering, a discipline that typically includes a focus on mathematics, physics, chemistry, research and technical writing. The schools will distribute the NFPA funds in the following ways:  Oklahoma State University will recognize up to three undergraduate students annually in its Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology program who have led their class with technical excellence during their required senior engineering project.  A monetary award will be presented to honorees each spring, along with a stipend to pay for travel to NFPA’s Annual Conference & Exposition, where each student will showcase his/her project to more than 3,000 fire and electrical safety professionals. The University of Maryland department of Fire Protection Engineering will utilize NFPA funds to recognize students who play a key role in the university’s extensive outreach program. Throughout the year, top fire protection engineering students visit schools in the region to discuss careers in the FPE field with teenagers involved in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs. With NFPA’s support, department leaders can now recognize students that are actively involved in the community engagement program with a stipend to cover their time and associated travel expenses. WPI has created the NFPA Fire Protection Engineering Graduate Support Fund award to be distributed as a single gift annually to an FPE graduate student during their course of study at WPI. Criteria for the award will be developed by the Fire Protection Engineering Department in consultation with the provost and NFPA. “Recipients of NFPA funds represent the future of fire protection engineering,” said Chris Dubay, NFPA’s vice president of engineering. “Supporting these students’ efforts presents a powerful opportunity to reinforce their passion and validate that their research has a real, vital impact on the world of fire protection.” The inaugural winners of the NFPA Fire Protection Engineering Support Fund awards will be recognized at NFPA’s Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 14, 2016.

Pierce to display 18 vehicles at FDIC 2016

Marc Diening appointed Chief Executive Officer of Magirus

Effective immediately, Marc Diening is appointed Chief Executive Officer of Magirus, the global firefighting equipment business. Diening, born in Wuppertal (Germany), succeeds Antonio Benedetti, who left the company at the end of 2015 at his own request. Mr. Diening brings a wealth of international experience in equipment manufacturing and senior management, out of which several years at Adtranz and later Bombardier Transportation including four years as General Manager of Bombardier Transportation’s largest European site in Hennigsdorf (Germany). Most recently, he successfully managed his own consultancy business and was earned an Executive MBA degree from INSEAD. “Heading Magirus, a company with such a great history, is an especially attractive challenge,” said Diening. “Magirus has undergone remarkable development over the last few years. New fire system for UK college demonstrates Advanced advantages

An Advanced, intelligent fire system with touchscreen repeaters, internet control and backwards compatibility, has been chosen to protect Ringmer Community College in East Sussex. Originally opened in 1958, Ringmer Community College is a leading secondary school Academy with specialisms in technology and the arts. The college also has a Sixth Form that boasts excellent engineering and media facilities. The specification and installation of the new fire system was undertaken by Pyrotec Fire Detection, long-time partner of Advanced. Ziegler – 125 years of quality, reliability and a burning passion for fire-fighting

As one of the world’s leading producer of fire-fighting vehicles and equipment, Ziegler thinks beyond the product to those who work with it every day In the final assembly hall in Giengen, Germany, powerful fire-fighting vehicles of different types are just waiting to get their high-tech interior and the final finishing. Mrs Stefanie Koch is a passionate Ziegler employee who is working with the fire-fighting vehicles every day. She is in charge of the installation of the telescopic slides for heavy equipment in a fire-fighting vehicle that is designed especially for the international market. “It was an absolutely logical step for me to start an apprenticeship as an vehicle body and vehicle construction mechanic in September 2011 at Ziegler”, explains the now 20-year-old woman. Already as a child she was very interested in fire fighting vehicles. Now she has successfully completed her apprenticeship and is fully accepted by the predominantly male colleagues. “I can imagine no better profession”, she says, “and if I can work in such a traditional company like Ziegler – this is even better.” 125 years ago everything started in the Klingelmühle, an old mill in Giengen, Germany The history of Ziegler extends over 125 years and goes back to the founder Albert Ziegler, who was active in the local Fire Department in the last two decades of the 19th century. In 1891 the focus was on the manufacturing of hoses. The firm’s hoses made it famous in the circle of European fire-fighters. Ziegler’s fire hoses won a bronze medal at the Antwerp World’s Fair of 1894. In 1901 the hoses received the silver medal at the International Exhibition for Fire Prevention and Rescue in Berlin. The preferred material was hemp, which welled up in wet state and provided the tightness of the hose during operation”, explains expert Wolfgang Wunderle, Head of Hose Weaving at Ziegler. Mr Wunderle has been working at Ziegler for more than 30 years. He has also completed an apprenticeship to become a steel construction locksmith. His locksmith skills are also beneficial in the hose manufacturing, where he is now responsible for more than 20 circular looms that produce about 6,000 metres of fire hoses at a wide range of variants a day. “The circular weaving process has prevailed from the 1950s”, reported Wolfgang Wunderle, “and likewise, polyester was also introduced at that time as a fibre material. But as polyester fibres do not work quite as well”, he added, “an elastomer has to be inserted as inner lining in the tube in a high-tech procedure to ensure the tightness.” For Ziegler, hose manufacturing is still an important traditional branch of the company. The 60 million metres of hose that the company has made to date could wrap around the world about one and a half times. From the hose to the pump up to the fully equipped fire-fighting vehicle Kurt Ziegler, the son of Albert Ziegler, shifted the company’s focus in 1922. He had good relations with the Fire Departments and decided to offer more products for this market segment. Therefore, he installed a mechanical workshop beside the looms and started developing a new product – the centrifugal fire pumps and portable centrifugal fire pumps. The company was doing so well that its facilities in the Klingelmühle were soon far too small. Ziegler moved to new premises, a move that was completed in 1923. In 1925 the first portable pump could be delivered. “Of course new, more modern and technically sophisticated models emerged in the course of many decades, although for example the 1953 developed portable pump 8/8 is still a highly valued product by fire-fighters”, notes Hans Mayr, who benefits from over 30 years of experience in the sales department at Ziegler. In 2011 he assumed overall responsibility for the sales in Germany. “Today’s core competence of the company is certainly based on an idea by Günther Ziegler, the son of Kurt Ziegler. “In 1953 he made the decision to start the construction of fire-fighting vehicles and thus to become a full supplier to the Fire Departments,” adds Hans Mayr. On the German market Ziegler sells up to 500 fire-fighting vehicles of various types a year. This constitutes a market share of about 30% in Germany. Nowadays high-tech vehicles do not have much in common with the first Ziegler fire-fighting vehicle, which was built in 1953 on an Opel-Blitz chassis. Ziegler is particularly proud of the patented aluminium-panel system ALPAS, which offers a high-quality and flexible base for all superstructures. Whether this is the centrifugal fire pump, which delivers up to 10,000 litres per minute and is very easy to use, or the Ziegler crew cabin Z-Cab that is spacious and equipped with safety in mind, demonstrating the company’s decades of experience in all the details. Since the 1990s, it has become increasingly international at Ziegler It started with the company’s 100th anniversary, when Ziegler opened a production facility in Rendsburg in 1991. In the following years further production sites in Mühlau, the Netherlands, Indonesia and Croatia were added. Sales offices are currently located in Italy, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and since 2014 also in China. The number of employees has thus grown to more than 1,100 people, where still about 600 are employed at the headquarters in Giengen. Günter Dörflinger, who has a special affinity to the company, has led the international sales department since 2011. His father also spent his career at Ziegler. Günter completed his apprenticeship as an industrial clerk at Ziegler, and later acquired a business degree. After his apprenticeship he has always been working in the international sales department. As head of this department, he sees great market opportunities particularly in the Chinese market after the acquisition by the CIMC Group in 2013. As part of CIMC, Ziegler is well funded and excellently positioned for the future. FDIC 2016: The leading international fire-fighter training conference is set to be bigger than ever

Fire Chief Bobby Halton (Ret.), Editor in Chief of Fire Engineering Magazine, speaks to International Fire Buyer’s Chris Beck about what this year’s FDIC International will have in store for international attendees What are the key highlights we can expect from FDIC International this year? We were so successful last year with our international outreach that this year, if one was to peruse the classroom and workshop offerings, you would just be blown away that we have some of the biggest names from fire services across the globe – Britain, Australia, Chile, Sweden, Switzerland – all speaking at FDIC on topics which are absolutely critical to the country they are from and have tremendous crossover to the American audience. The European model of fire-fighting has always been somewhat an enigma to the American fire service, for a number of reasons: The highly compartmentalised structure, the high pressure systems, the fact that fire-fighting tactics can differ from nation to nation. We have Ben Walker from the UK coming this year to talk about the European compartment-based fire training method. These sorts of methods have never really been adopted in the US, for the most part because the messengers were not true practitioners. Now that we have those, and with the help from Ben Walker, who has 25 years of experience in the industry, we will be able to lay out how compartment-based training can be adapted for an American market. Ben, Bill Gough and Shan Raffel from Australia will each be giving a four-hour workshop on this subject, so if you’ve signed up for all three, you will get 12 hours of instruction on compartment-based fire training from people who have been doing it for 25 years across the world. From Switzerland, we have one of the lead instructors on how to fight fires in tunnels, Markus Vogt. He will be sharing techniques and advice based on what he has learnt in a workshop – it’s not a short, quick overview, but a four-hour comprehensive discussion about the research and development of tactics used by the Swiss, who are leading the world in tunnel fire-fighting. We also have a number of speakers, one of whom is a Chief in the Chilean Fire Service, who will be giving their classes in Spanish, which is really exciting. It shows the level of gravitas that the conference has taken from an international perspective. We are really looking forward to continuing the tremendous growth we have enjoyed internationally in recent years. Remember – we don’t solicit people to present; this shows how deeply FDIC has become engrained in the worldwide fire service. We are getting people from Saudi Arabia, Japan, the UK and all over the world wanting to come to Indianapolis to share their insight and methodology. It’s like what the UN is to international affairs – differences are not debated or argued over; they are considered and shared. We are about building bridges between different opinion and approaches. Every tactical approach has something that we can take away and learn from. FDIC is a celebration of the art and science of fire-fighting, and both are equally valued. FDIC has certainly become the vanguard of fire-fighter training globally. What do you think has made it so successful? We are not promoting one method over another, but neither are we dismissing it. At FDIC, the practitioners get to talk about the best methods in their system, and we can then analyse the systems and practices to make a decision about what methods would work best for us. We promote the theory of the evolution of fire-fighting. Change is often brought about by force and law, often by well-meaning but misinformed or uninitiated people who believe that their idea or theory is superior. Take, for example, the tyranny of the Soviet Socialist Republic or Nazi Germany. They believed that their ideology, or at least their interpretation of it, was the only way to go for their social system. After decades of misery, those systems collapsed as a total failure. We have the same opportunities to fall into a similar ideological-driven system in the fire industry as in the political system. We have to be on guard for that, and evolution is a great way to manage any industry; allowing things to happen organically, where experts can bring together the art and science of that industry to capture the moments where all discoveries and breakthroughs, whether small or large, are made organically and allowed to percolate naturally through the rest of the industry from the bottom up. This is the exact opposite of change where things are often forced downwards by sometimes people who aren’t as knowledgeable as they could be – a bureaucrat or administrator. If you let the practitioners – the experts – organically bring things up and let evolution take its course, then things start to change of their own accord and for the better. That’s what FDIC promotes – the evolution of thought and the industry. We don’t promote anyone forcing anyone else to do something against their will, better judgement or beliefs. As FDIC has evolved, it has, as you mentioned, begun offering classes in foreign languages. Is that something that you can see growing? Absolutely, yes. We would love to take that as far and as fast as technology will allow us. We are looking into systems whereby, if we can get enough population – say we can get a critical mass of, for example, Japanese attendees – it would make it worth the investment to look into offering headsets and translators in the classes that they have registered for. Obviously, we can’t afford to do that for the many thousands of languages that are out there across the world, but we might be able to pick some that make sense, like French or German or Chinese. Ferrara Fire Apparatus: Built by fire-fighters, for fire-fighters

Chris Ferrara, CEO of Ferrara Fire Apparatus, tells International Fire Buyer about the company’s revolutionary and game-changing new aerial product, the SKYFLOW What have been the main developments at Ferrara Fire Apparatus in the past 12 months or so? First of all, we are really excited about the upcoming FDIC show. We will be unveiling a brand new product that is built from the ground-up. It’s a new aerial device and industrial pumper that we are calling the SKYFLOW. It will be the largest water-delivery device anywhere in the world. The water capability at the end of the aerial will exceed 5,000 gallons per minute. It has been designed for industrial use around the world, as well as municipalities that need a high water flow from an aerial device. The product is a mid-mounted aerial that extends about 100 feet upwards. You can imagine flowing 5,000 gallons of water that high in the air is something that is unheard of in the industry. This has been in the making for over three years. In addition to that, we have partnered with US Fire Pump and now not only do we have the highest flow rate, but we also have the most powerful pump available. It’s a rear-mounted pump design that can deliver in excess of 5,250 gallons from draught; from a pressurised source it can deliver over 10,000 gallons per minute, which is quite extraordinary. We debuted this product, called the Inundator, at Interschutz last year. Tell us about the development process of the SKYFLOW. It was a product from a scratch piece of paper. We had to design a chassis that could handle such a pump, and an aerial hat could take the stress and loads of that amount of water. You can’t just take a regular aerial chassis and expect it to handle such a large design without any modification. The handrails have to be thicker, the overlaps in the aerial section have to be wider and thicker, so there has been a lot of engineering that has been put into this product to make it work as we want it to. It’s been a complete re-engineering from the ground up. It’s based on foam technology, so we can flow 5,000 gallons per minute out of the aerial utilising foam capability. Then, from all the other discharges on the fire truck we can flow at 10,000 gallons a minute. This is unheard of in the industry, whether it’s industrial or municipal use. In addition to having a monitor that can handle 5,000 gallons per minute on the aerial device, we have two large monitors on the rear of the vehicle, which can deliver 2,000 gallons per minute each; if you look at the water flow capability of the product, you are looking at 9,000 gallons per minute from one vehicle and a pressurised source. And it has all been designed and built in-house? That’s correct, yes. It’s a very important thing for Ferrara that we do that, because we can set our own destiny by doing all the engineering ourselves. We listen to our customers as well – if you are looking for potential markets for this product, we don’t just see it being used for large industrial applications, but also large municipalities. Take the large Dubai fires recently; the whole side of those skyscrapers was on fire, so an extra 100 feet of aerial capability, plus 300-400 feet of thrown water from that aerial would make a monumental difference. How important are your customers to the company? Like any business, every customer is important. We listen to their needs and capabilities. With larger industrial facilities with bigger storage tanks and buildings, for example, you need excess water flow to put out the fires on the scale they get there. Having a truck that can flow 10,000 gallons per minute, which the Inundator can offer, can make all the difference. That product in particular has really taken the industry by storm. We have had requests from all over the world asking about it, and have been successful in selling a significant number already. We are really excited that through our collaboration with US Fire Pump we have been able to take this offering to a whole other level. We are considered the leader in industrial fire truck design and flow technology, and are always looking for new ideas and technologies. For this reason, we are very excited about the SKYFLOW, which is shaping up to be a unique product that will appeal globally. The functionality of the truck is an added bonus. For example, we have mounted a thermal imaging camera onto tip of the aerial, meaning we can offer added insight about hot spots or trapped individuals, 100 feet up in the air. Not only does the aerial deliver extinguishing capabilities, but it can also offer thermal imaging protection on top of that. Is the need for extra technology on the vehicles something that you are seeing industry-wide? You need to start looking at other applications – what can this vehicle be used for other that as a water-driven aerial fire-fighting device? To a large extent this will be customer-driven; you have to sit down with them and determine what other capabilities they may be looking for. Even in a terrorist situation, you can put the aerial up and use the camera to look over the surrounding area, or use thermal imaging to watch people movement. There is a lot more capability to the truck than just fire-fighting, and that’s something that we try to think about with all the new products we build.
