The first Show was held in 2006 at The Royal Horticultural Halls in London with just 90 exhibitors and 1,000 visitors. The Show grew and moved to Stoneleigh Park where it was held from 2007 to 2012. The requirement for more space took the event to the NEC in Birmingham from 2013, moving this year to  Hall 5, the NEC’s most prestigious event space. Next generation technology showcases capabilities

In today’s fast paced and ever changing world of technology – what’s “hot” today is often obsolete tomorrow.  That’s not the case, however, with MSA’s revolutionary G1 breathing apparatus for firefighters.  This week, the global safety equipment manufacturer unveiled, at the annual Fire Department Instructor’s Conference (FDIC) in Indianapolis, Ind., a series of safety innovations that demonstrate just how fast technology is advancing firefighter protection. Among these innovations is a new thermal imaging camera (TIC) that is part of the self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) itself.  Introduced as a concept just one year ago, MSA’s integrated thermal imaging camera has since been submitted for regulatory approval and is now available for pre-order.  An industry first, the G1 Integrated TIC now makes the concept of personal thermal imaging a reality. “The G1 SCBA is the single largest new product development effort in MSA’s history,” said Steven Blanco, Vice President and General Manager of MSA’s business in the U.S. and Canada.  “But we are certainly not done, and this integrated TIC is evidence of that commitment.  Our brand promise to firefighters – When you go in…We go in with you – is what drives us.  And it’s consistent with MSA’s long-standing mission to protect people in the workplace.  In that spirit, our vision is to continually raise the bar to protect workers with technology that, in this case, has the potential to genuinely change the way fires are fought.” Compatible with any G1 SCBA, via factory installation or a simple field upgrade, the G1 Integrated TIC is patent-pending and takes advantage of the only full-color display control module available on the market today.  With five user-selectable color palettes, it represents a concept that just ten years ago was considered out of reach by many in the fire service industry, Mr. Blanco commented. In addition to the new TIC option, MSA unveiled three new and patent-pending concepts that likewise leverage the flexibility of the G1 SCBA platform.  These include a fall detection system, a breathing rate detection system and a firefighter ranging system, all of which have the potential to take firefighter safety to the next level. “While the these three new technologies are still in prototype form, showcasing them at FDIC allows our product designers to gain important, first-hand feedback from the fire service community,” explained Jason Traynor, Global Product Business Director for Respiratory Protection and Fire Helmets. Falls are recognized as the number one cause for “MAYDAY” emergencies on the fire ground, Mr. Traynor explained.  Taking advantage of existing hardware within the G1 SCBA, MSA’s fall detection concept triggers an audible alarm that sounds well before a conventional PASS (Personal Alert Safety System) alarm would indicate a lack of firefighter movement.  The result is a significantly shortened response time for a downed firefighter. “Every second counts in a rapid intervention situation,” said Mr. Traynor.  “Our goal is to give firefighters those extra critical seconds that could literally mean the difference between life and death.” Also capitalizing on the G1’s versatile design, MSA introduced a breathing rate monitor that provides firefighters with increased awareness of their exertion levels, enabling them to take immediate action to avoid overexertion, another leading health and safety concern throughout the fire service. In keeping with this “information is king” focus, MSA also showcased a firefighter ranging system that provides direction, distance and elevation data for firefighters at the scene.  Displayed directly on the full-color control module of the G1 SCBA, with one glance firefighters can know of the whereabouts of fellow firefighters, thereby saving time should an emergency rescue situation occur. Each of the innovations unveiled by MSA are designed to work hand-in-hand with the G1 SCBA telemetry system, thereby allowing incident command to remotely monitor potentially dangerous conditions on the fire ground. “The G1 SCBA was developed with the promise of providing firefighters with the latest technology, as it becomes available, to help protect them when lives are on the line.  These innovations demonstrate that vision in action,” Mr. Traynor said.  “Equally important, it represents the next step in our goal to provide a truly unique and versatile SCBA platform that can keep up with the rapid pace of technological change.” Other MSA activities at FDIC include the company’s official sponsorship of the conference’s firefighter training classes and exercises, where participants will use MSA Evolution 6000 thermal imaging cameras.  MSA is also a key sponsor of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) 2016 Stair Climb.  Because of the role MSA played in the days immediately following the terrorist attacks on 9/11, the company is also making a $10,000 donation to the NFFF in honor of the fifteenth anniversary of that fateful day. Kentec warning sign range extended!

Kentec’s wide range of illuminated warning signs now includes an IP66 rated weatherproof version, consisting of a polycarbonate enclosure with metal chassis. The Kentec range employs the very latest in LED technology to provide a high reliability, high brightness, audio/ visual warning indication unit. The brightness of the sign remains constant over its entire operating range of 15 to 30 volts DC due to its unique ‘power boost’ circuitry. This ensures that even with a system running on depleted batteries, all signs remain at full intensity. A split level design allows one message to be displayed in the top half of the sign and an additional message to be displayed in the bottom, allowing for two stage warnings for systems such as extinguishing protection systems. FDIC firefighter conference: Live fire training

Live fire training in Greenwood Monday drew some of the top firefighters from across the country. It was part of this week’s Fire Department Instructors Conference in Indianapolis. FDIC takes place downtown, but it also uses dozens of other locations across the area for training. One of those was a vacant house in Greenwood. There were half a dozen fire department vehicles lining the street from cities across the region. But there were even more firefighters without their apparatus, here to learn from cities across the country. “Live smoke, live fire, and that’s why it’s such a dangerous type of training; it’s really the highest risk type of structural firefighter training that we could do,” Instructor Bryant Krizik from the South Holland, Illinois, fire department said. At this training, the students are actually instructors from fire departments across the country. “We’ve got volunteers, we’ve got paid, we have anywhere from the new guy all the way up to chief out here,” Kelly Gawlik from the Hanover Park, Illinois, fire department said. They travel to Indiana to learn the proper techniques and then take those back to their home departments to train more firefighters. “If they can acquire a structure such as the one we got today we show them how to set multiple fires, obviously one at a time, but how to do it safely,” she said. “It’s literally trial by fire on the job, so if you don’t get an opportunity like this, you’ll never know,” Shane Furuta from the Federal Fire Department in Hawaii said. Some of the students have to travel for the type of training found here in the Midwest. “This gives us the opportunity to do certain things that we couldn’t do elsewhere, like in Hawaii we don’t really get the opportunity to get houses donated to the fire department and actually train and light fires in them,” Furuta said. Aside from the training benefits, the instructors and students say it’s one of the highlights of their year to be able to swap stories and lessons with firefighters with different backgrounds. More live burn training will be taking place Tuesday at the vacant Greenwood house at Main St. and Graham Rd. The FDIC conference runs through to Saturday. Rosenbauer launches new fire-fighting truck

The first of Rosenbauer’s premium class firefighting trucks have been implemented on the new Antos chassis from Mercedes-Benz. The vehicles will go to Daimler AG and join the operations of the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim and Sindelfingen plant fire departments. Powerful firefighting equipment The AT not only complies with the standard for German rescue assistance vehicles, but has firefighting equipment and technology which also significantly exceeds the requirements. For example, the extinguisher pump outputs at up to 4,500 l/min. Thus, the vehicles have twice the extinguishing power when compared to an HLF 20. The extinguishing agent tanks, with 2,500 liters of water and 200 liters of foam compound, have slightly larger dimensions than standard vehicles. For the generation of foam, an electrically driven and electronically controlled additive pressure proportioning system with a great degree of spread is available. On the one hand, it delivers up to 42 l/min of foam compound for standard foam operations and, on the other, achieves a minimum proportioning quantity of 0.1 l/min for wetting agent operations. The proportioning ratio can be continuously adjusted between 0.1% and 6%. The firefighting equipment is controlled electronically via displays. The vehicles are also equipped with roof-mounted water/foam turrets, which can output up to 3,000 l/min of water at a throw range of up to 70 m. The turret is operated manually and can be fixed on both rotational and lateral axes. Modern lighting technology The entire lighting technology – from the equipment compartment and crew cab, the scene lighting, right through to the maneuverable floodlights on the mirrors – uses LEDs. An LED light mast is integrated into the body, and an LED traffic warning device is fitted in the rear trim panel. For power generation independent of the vehicle, a portable 14 kVA generator is mounted in the body.Modern lighting technology On/off warning lights, flashing lights and vehicle lights are shown on a display in the driver’s cab, via this, the power generator is remotely started and monitored, the firefighting pump is activated, and other functions or engine data can be called up. High load capacity Loading of the vehicles is as for the HLF 20, with extensive equipment for firefighting and technical rescue operations in accordance with DIN 14530-27. They feature a cable winch, CAFS system, integrated generator and ladder lowering device. Moreover, they have a permissible total weight of 18 t of additional load capacity, which the plant fire departments can use for carrying specific special equipment. From Daimler for Daimler The AT is built on the Mercedes-Benz Antos, which was first presented in September 2012. The Antos is equipped with six-cylinder common-rail diesel engines, as standard, which, with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), an SCR system (Selective Catalytic Reduction), and an oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter achieves Euro 6 standards. The engines in the vehicles of the Daimler plant fire departments provide 315 kW (428 hp) at 1,800 l/min, with the power being transmitted through a fully automatic Powershift gear box with 12 gears. The Antos is manufactured at the Wörth plant, where all Mercedes-Benz trucks in the Actros, Axor, Atego and Antos model series are created on the same production line. This is also the case for the Rosenbauer AT, which is produced in all its many variations on the same assembly line in Leonding Plant II. The first Rosenbauer ATs, based on the Antos, will be go into operation in the plant fire department of their parent plant in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, where Daimler AG manufactures engines, gear boxes, axles and related components, as well as at the Sindelfingen plant, where seven premium and luxury class Mercedes-Benz models are produced.

Raising the alarm at New Scotland Yard

An advanced wireless alarm system from Bull Products is playing a key part in the multi-million pound redevelopment of the Curtis Green Building, the new home for Scotland Yard on the Victoria Embankment, London. The 1937 building designed by architect William Curtis Green is a neo-classical design and the move to this building is part of the Met’s drive to reduce operating costs.  In the refurbishment, architects AHMM have designed an extension to the rear of the building, a glazed entrance pavilion, roof top pavilion and an ‘iconic blue line beacon’ to the open plan offices at the top of the building.  The famous rotating sign is also moving to the new building and re-named Scotland Yard. Main contractors Royal BAM Group have been working on the project for nearly two years and the completion date is Autumn 2016.  The refurbishment involved some demolition and soft strip of the interior and in the early stages of the project, the alarms fitted were smaller sounder units.  It wasn’t long before a more sophisticated and reliable alarm system was required to ensure the health and safety of the construction workforce. The Cygnus wireless alarm system from Bull Products was selected for the job, and a total of 30 fire alarms and first aid alerts are installed across all the floors, each wirelessly linked to two main Cygnus control units, one in the extension building and one in the security section of the site office.  Andy Lee, Site Manager for BAM is very impressed with the performance of the alarm system, “This Cygnus system has been immensely valuable to us, covering such a large area of the building.  The system’s dual functionality for both fire and first aid has been an important element in its choice.”  He continued, “Crucially, these alarms can be heard over the sound of demolition work and so as the project developed the Cygnus wireless system became a necessity.”  Bull Products’ Cygnus wireless alarm system can link as many as 480 alarm and detector units in different zones on a construction site, and individual units can be fire alarm call points, first aid alerts, combined call point and smoke detectors or heat detectors. Intended purely for use on construction sites, the CE marked Cygnus system has been specifically designed for use in dense concrete and steel structured buildings and areas where there are many other radio frequencies in operation, and so particular attention has been given to achieving an impressive connection range.  Where there are multiple sites within range of each other, the Cygnus system has been designed to operate on different site addresses in order to keep each system separate and free from interference.  A major feature of the Cygnus system is the optional control panel which provides a very sophisticated capability with an event log function which records any events such as an alarm activation, low battery warning, and signal faults, all of which can be viewed if necessary in the history folder held on the panel.  The system also has the ability to test all units and has an evacuate function which will act as a call point to the rest of the alarm units.  Each unit in the system can provide the panel with information at regular intervals.  This explicit information confirms the unit is still present and what the battery status of each device is.  Known as the ‘heart beat’ this message is monitored by the control panel where fitted and if the ‘heart beat’ is not heard for several intervals, the control panel logs a full status for that unit.  A PIR option is now available on any of the modules which can detect an intruder and alert off-site personnel for added safety protection.
