Apartment block on the Isle of Man, UK evacuated following toaster fire

An apartment block in the Douglas region of the Isle of Man in the UK had to be evacuated following a fire that broke out from a toaster on the third floor of the building. The building, on Queen’s Promenade, was attended to by firefighters at 10:30 on the 18th December, who tended to the seven-storey building as quickly as possible, There were no injuries as a result of the blaze, however one person had to be taken to hospital purely for precaution based reasons. Speaking in the aftermath of a fire, a spokesman for the Island of Man Fire and Rescue service heaped praise on “quick-thinking neighbours” who had managed to safely get a resident in the building who had mobility problems out of harm’s way.

China's tallest wooden pagoda – the Lingguan Tower – destroyed by fire

The Linnguan Tower pagoda in China has been burnt to a crisp after a fire broke out at the world-famous tower, which caused it to collapse. On the 10th December, a fire broke out in the Lingguan Mansion Buddhist holy site and prayer hall, which is located in Mianzhu City in China, which saw Asia’s tallest wooden tower completely destroyed in the space of a few hours. The pagoda, which was 16 storeys high, was made out entirely of wood, and it’s thought that the fire close to the top when it started. Monks were seen at the sight praying while the tower, which had huge spiritual significance, burned. The fire service was on the scene fairly quickly and put the fire out four hours after it emerged, but by that point not only the pagoda had been destroyed, but the prayer hall had, too. There were no casualties as a result of the blaze, but the cause of the fire is under investigation. The Linguan Mansion pagoda was first put into construction during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD) during the reign of Zhu Youjian, otherwise known as the Chongzhen Emperor. The tower had been through battles before and was badly damaged during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake and ultimately had to be restored, however the majority of the complex was still under construction at the time of the blaze.

Two girls arrested on arson suspicion following school fire in Newhaven, UK

Following a blaze at a school in Newhaven, two 13-year-old girls have been arrested on suspicion of arson, with the fire taking place at a former school. On the 18th December, 40 firefighters had to be deployed to the former Grans School which is located on Western Road in Newhaven, with the fire tearing through the building and causing extensive damage. No-one was harmed in the fire, though it remains under investigation, while the teenagers in question are still in police custody until things are resolved. The black smoke was so strong that it was seen billowing down the East Sussex coast.

Sikorsky notified that the city of San Diego intends to purchase an S-70i™ Black Hawk Helicopter for firefighting and search and rescue

Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) Company, received notice that the City of San Diego intends to award a contract for one S-70i™ Black Hawk helicopter in a baseline configuration. The San Diego City Council voted last Wednesday, December 13, 2017 to approve the purchase. A Firehawk helicopter performs aerial firefighting and additionally, can plan missions and direct other firefighting aircraft, and provide emergency medical service transport, search and rescue, and logistic support. Once modified by a specialist outfitter in 2018, it will be equipped with a 1,000-gallon (3,785-liter) water tank, extended landing gear, single pilot cockpit layout and a medically-equipped interior. The Firehawk™ configuration of the Black Hawk is the most capable multi-mission, firefighting helicopter available, with proven military grade capabilities, said Brian Fennessy, Fire Chief for the City of San Diego. “Fires are spreading faster and getting larger. The need for aircraft to carry more water has become critical.” Compared to LA County’s three existing S-70A model Firehawk aircraft, the S-70i variant includes wide chord rotor blades for increased payload and maneuverability, enhanced engine power, a stronger airframe, a digital cockpit with flight management system for enhanced situation awareness, and an Integrated Vehicle Health Management System to monitor the aircraft’s operational health. Among improved safety features, the S-70i aircraft includes a terrain and obstacle avoidance system that alerts aircrew to the proximity of potential hazards on the ground. “When configured for its aerial firefighting mission, the Firehawk helicopter will give the City of San Diego a state-of-the-art platform proven to fight fires from the air and perform other life-saving missions,” said Dan Schultz, president of Sikorsky. “This aircraft’s military pedigree, unique equipment and advanced onboard systems will enable San Diego to perform these high endurance missions with safety and reliability. Welcome San Diego firefighters to the Sikorsky helicopter family.” “As wildfires continue to ravage our state, we must do everything in our power to make sure the San Diego region is as prepared as possible for the next major fire,” said Mayor of San Diego Kevin L. Faulconer. “We must continue to ensure our firefighters have the most advanced tools at their disposal to keep San Diegans safe. This new Firehawk helicopter is going to take our aerial firefighting capabilities to the next level.” Sikorsky supports the critical mission of the City of San Diego Fire Department with an all new S-70i Black Hawk aircraft, available direct from Sikorsky in the U.S. Customers can order aircraft with mission specific kits and accessories customized to specific preferences. EUSAS and Euralarm organise Conference on Fire Safety and Security in the Aviation Sector

In 2018, EUSAS and Euralarm will organise the second edition of the EUSAS-Euralarm Conference. Next year’s topic will be ‘Fire Safety and Security in the Aviation Sector’.  The event will be hosted by Airbus and will take place at the Airbus facilities in Bremen, Germany, on July 10th and 11th, 2018. This will be the second edition of the event, which is already a reference in the field of electronic security and fire research and development (R&D) and which first installment was praised for the high quality of the speeches and presentations delivered. The conference will focus on fire safety and security in aircrafts and airports, as well as travellers’ safety. It will bring together academics, innovators, executives and researchers from the European and US Aviation Industry, as well as from the Fire and Security Industry. Other actors involved in the event are testing institutes, certification bodies and standard developers interested in engineering and fire safety and security technologies applied to the aviation sector. The organisers of the event are EUSAS, the European Society for Automatic Alarm Systems e.V, a European platform for promoting security and protection engineering, and Euralarm, the European trade association for the electronic fire safety and security Industry and main representative of the industrial sector towards EU Institutions in Brussels.​

Sweet shop fire in Mumbai, India takes the lives of 12 people

After a fire broke out inside a sweet shop in Mumbai, India, 12 people have died as a direct result of the blaze. All 12 had actually been rescued by firefighters initially, however on their way to hospital, all 12 succumbed from their injuries, officials stated. The victims have been reported thus far to have been workers employed by the shop largely, however, other people who were living at the site are also suspected to be dead. The fire broke out on the 18th December at around 04:00 on the ground floor of the shop, which in turn trapped people in the loft. The heat from the fire was so strong that the loft structure collapsed. Rescue operations were in full force for a series of days after the fire, according to officials. Initial reports haven’t given any answers as to what actually caused the fire, however, a lack of safety measures and poor maintenance in general are frequently occurrences in India, and as such, are often to blame. An investigation is ongoing as to discover the cause. In September, a similar fire broke out at a construction site, also in Mumbai, which killed six people and left several others injured.

Huge fire in Edinburgh, Scotland forces residents to be evacuated

Over 30 firefighters were called to take on a blaze that spreads to three houses on Seaview Terrace, a street in Edinburgh, Scotland. Residents were evacuated as quickly as possible after the fire broke out on the 14th December, with the blaze taking place just before midnight. The three buildings in question were currently under construction, and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service claimed there were no casualties as a result of it. While the blaze was being fought, Police Scotland closed down the road at Rockville Hotel. Speaking about the incident, a spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was on hand to state that the fire took hold of the three buildings under construction, that no-one was harmed, and the fire crews left knowing that the area was safe. “More than 30 firefighters have worked to extinguish a large fire which had taken hold within three buildings which were under construction,” the spokesman said. “Operations Control mobilised a total of seven appliances and a height appliance to the scene in Seaview Terrace, Edinburgh after the alarm was raised at 23:59 on Thursday. “Firefighters extinguished the flames using high powered hoses. There were no casualties. Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”

Homeless community in Los Angeles, America fear backlash after wildfire started in homeless camp

The Los Angeles homeless community are fearing a backlash after a wildfire which ripped apart six mansions valued at $20m was initially started in a homeless camp. The Los Angeles fire department confirmed the reports, with the fire initially started as a cooking fire under a freeway some 20 miles away from the city centre. On the 6th December in Los Angeles County, just before 05:00, the fire broke out at a homeless encampment under Interstate 405 and Sepulveda Boulevard, as confirmed by the fire department. It then become uncontrollable and spread through arid landscapes fanned by strong winds, which has been the primary cause for a grand total of five other fires in the state in the week commencing 27th November. Being named the Skirball fire, the blaze itself has torn through more than 400 acres, completely destroyed six homes while 12 others have been damaged in the very wealthy Bel-Air district of Los Angeles. In addition to this, a building at a winery owned by Rupert Murdoch was scorched, with the billionaire media mogul’s Moraga Vineyards – where he lives, with Jerry Hall – needing to be evacuated after fires started to move in on the grounds. On the 12th December, fire officials stated that 85% of the fire had been contained, however there were still dozens of firefighters in the affected areas leftover tackling the blazes.
