Grande Prairie Fire Department in Canada announce Preben Bossen as new fire chief

Grande Prairie Fire Department in Canada announce Preben Bossen as new fire chief The Grande Prairie Fire Department in Canada has announced that Preben Bossen is their new fire chief, and stated that he was very keen to grab the opportunity with both hands. “I am very excited about this opportunity and would like to thank all who have supported me during this process,” Preben said. “I also appreciate all the support I have received form the Grande Prairie Fire Department staff. On the 27th December, Preben was officially active in his new role, after taking over from former chief Dan Lemieux. In September 2017, Lemieux stepped down from his position after nine years in the role in order to become director of Emergency Services/Fire Chief of Strathcona County. Preben has a lot of experience within the fire sector, and actually started his career with the Grande Prairie Fire Department back in 1983 as a volunteer firefighter. The following year, Preben became a full-time firefighter, and would eventually progress to 1st Class Fire Fighter a few years later in 1987. His progression continued and in 2001, Preben was promoted to lieutenant, and four years later in 2005, he was promoted to captain. Since 2015, Preben has been deputy fire chief (operations), having worked his way up the ladder all his life. Back in 2012, Preben was given the position of platoon chief, which gave him additional and much needed management experience which meant when the time came to be acting deputy chief in 2015, he was well equipped to succeed. “I look forward to providing leadership and guidance to this very progressive and highly functioning fire department and to maintain the many great working relationships throughout the region and province that we have come to appreciate so much,” he said.

New Orleans to offer out free smoke detectors in order to prevent fires

New Orleans to offer out free smoke detectors in order to prevent fires The State of New Orleans is looking to impose a rather interesting new measure, which is to offer their residents free smoke detectors in order to try and save more lives. Byron Francois, the Deputy State Fire Marshal, is firmly of the belief that it’s vital for citizens to have working smoke alarms, and personally offered to install them if need be. “There’s no reason for anyone to die in a fire who doesn’t have a smoke detector. I’m willing to come out and install a smoke detector in your home and save someone’s life,” Francois stated. How the system will work is that the state fire marshal’s office will take it upon themselves to both deliver and install smoke detectors for free, which citizens can do simply by ringing up and asking. Francois did state though that the fire alarms should never be disabled, and for safety purposes, must have their batteries changed twice a year. Speaking about a spate of recent fires, Francois said that they’ve come from silly things, and things that a detector could alert them to and save lives. “It’s just been a rash of different things where people simply plugging in too many electrical cords into certain sockets, simply going to sleep and leaving their dryer on at night,” Francois said. “We have to make the citizens understand, you have to put up these smoke detectors. This is the way that we’re going to be able to save lives.”

Scores of residents in Stonehouse, Scotland evacuated following garage fire

Scores of residents in Stonehouse, Scotland evacuated following garage fire A number of residents were forced to evacuate their homes after a fire took hold of a garage in Lanarkshire, Scotland, with both fire crews and police turning up at the scene on New Street, Stonehouse at 03:45 on the 2nd January 2018. Those who were living in close proximity to the scene had to be moved on precautionary grounds, due to concerns over gas bottles which were inside the building. No casualties were reported following the incident, but the fire was at the level that firefighters had to use an aerial rescue pump in order to get the blaze under control. Currently, inquiries as to what started the fire are ongoing, however Police Scotland stated that people were now allowed to return to their homes. Speaking on social media, local councillor Margaret Cooper did her best to alert people to the blaze, while also confirming no-one was hurt. “The police have been in contact with me early this morning to share that there has been a large fire in New Street in Stonehouse,” Cooper said. “There were concerns about gas bottles in the premises. Residents have been temporarily evacuated for their safety. There are road closures currently in place in that area. No one has been injured.” Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service went into the fine details a bit more. “We were alerted at 3.46am on Tuesday, 2 January to reports of a fire that had taken hold within a car garage,” the spokesperson said. “Operations Control immediately mobilised two appliances and an aerial rescue pump to New Street, Stonehouse, and firefighters used powerful water jets to tackle the flames. “There are no casualties. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service remains in attendance.”

12 die following New York City's worst fire for decades

A minimum of 12 people have died, while four remain critically injured following a fire in an apartment building that took place in the Bronx region of New York, America, on the 28th December. One of the victims is a one-year-old child, and the cause of the fire – located on Prospect Avenue, which is close to both the Bronx Zoo and Fordham University, remains unclear at this moment in time. Over 160 firefighters were on the scene to bring the fire under control in New York – which is currently experiencing remarkably cold weather –  with the first alarm sounding at around 19:00 local time. Speaking about the fire, Bill de Blasio – Mayor of New York City – claimed that it was the most devastating fire in the city for at least 25 years, while also adding that a school nearby has been set up in order to shelter residents who evacuated from the building and are now homeless. “We’re here at the scene of an unspeakable tragedy,” De Blasio said. “Tonight, here in the Bronx there are families that have been torn apart. “This is the worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city in at least a quarter century. Based on the information we have now, this will rank as one as the worst losses of life to a fire in many, many years.” In addition, De Blasio stated that the New York fire service had successfully managed to rescue a minimum of 12 people from the building, which contains over 20 flats and was built just over a century ago. According to the Associated Press, the fire is the deadliest in New York – excluding the 9/11 attacks – since a fire at a social club in the Bronx in 1990, which saw 87 people die.

The EF1 is hard-coated aluminum alloy which is then powder coated inside and out. All electronics are tightly contained in a sealed control box that is part of the monitor casting. Monitor wiring is reduced to a minimum and installs easily using a one plug connection. According to Phil Gerace, TFT’s VP of Marketing, “The EF1 is TFT’s most compact monitor, but its large, efficient waterway is capable of flows up to 200 gpm (760 l/min). It’s a great monitor for new brush trucks, interface pumpers or conversions.”

The fire chief candidate preferred by Essex, UK has been announced as Jo Turton

Jo Turton, a candidate with 30 years’ worth of service in local government, is the current front runner to become the new Essex chief fire officer. Turton has been announced as police, fire and crime commissioner Roger Hirst’s preferred candidate, with Hirst wanting Turton to be working in a combined chief office and chief executive role. Previously, Turton was the chief executive of Lancashire County Council, but she was made redundant after that post was combined with a finance role earlier in 2017. Speaking on the matter, the Fire Brigades Union have said that they’d much rather have a uniformed candidate, with Essex’s existing chief fire officer – Adam Eckley – set to retire next year. After being asked to comment on the matter, Hirst was on hand to say that the Essex County Fire and Rescue service is a hotbed for exciting opportunities, and a number of top drawer candidates applied for the role. “Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is a large and complex service with many exciting opportunities for collaboration and development,” Hirst said. “Our open and widely advertised recruitment attracted a large number of high-calibre candidates.” In addition, Hirst said that an openness in relation to collaboration with other emergency services and a positive culture in general would required to thrive in the role, which pays £140,000 a year. Hirst’s recommendation of Turton has to go to a confirmation hearing of the Police, Fire and Crime Panel, which will take place in late January. Turton, who could start in March 2018, was delighted about the opportunity, and is fully ready for the challenge. “I am excited about the opportunity and welcome the chance to lead Essex County Fire and Rescue Service into the next phase of its journey,” Turton said. The chief fire officer will not only be responsible for a population of 1.7m people, but also 51 stations.
