International standard for managing risk in organisations revised

International standard for managing risk in organisations revised The purpose of this standard is to assist an organisation to integrate risk management into all of its activities and functions. Properly implemented, risk management improves performance, encourages innovation and supports the achievement of objectives. BS ISO 31000 provides best practice guidance on how an organisation can create a framework for risk management strategy which aligns with its broader goals. Risk can take many shapes and forms – including economic, political and environmental. BS ISO 31000 is intentionally broad in its scope in order to assist organizations with managing risk of any kind and is consequently applicable to organizations in all sectors. A notable change in this revision is a review of the principles of risk management. One of these is continual improvement. This means it is not enough for an organization to create a risk management framework which is never revisited or reviewed. To be effective, the risk management framework needs to take into account the context of the organization and its current risk management practices so that gaps can be addressed. The different parts of the framework and how they work together should always be adapted to specific needs. Human and cultural factors are also key. For example, different opinions will affect risk appetite and the judgement and perception of risk. A traditional hierarchical organization may have very different attitudes to risk to a collaborative, innovation-based company. This revision highlights the importance of top management not only implementing risk management but promoting it. Ultimately, the effectiveness of risk management depends on its integration into the organization at all levels. Anne Hayes, Head of the Governance and Resilience sector at BSI, said: “Effective risk management is about all levels of an organization strategically planning for today and for tomorrow. BS ISO 31000 provides structured risk management guidance for any organization so that it can prepare effectively for the future. Having a plan is in the best interests of everyone’s safety, security and resilience.” For further information, please visit www.bsigroup.com

Plane passengers in China evacuated after fire in overhead compartment

Plane passengers in China evacuated after fire in overhead compartment Moments before a Chinese passenger jet was set to take off, a fire broke out in the overhead storage, causing chaos. Immediately after noticing, a passenger and several flight attendants threw both water and juice over a bag in the luggage compartment, which was quickly being engulfed by both heavy smoke and flames. According to reports, the fire is set to have been caused by a portable power bank charger, which was in the bag. Police took the owner of the item away for questioning. The plane – which was scheduled to fly from Guangzhou Airport to Shanghai – had to be evacuated, with all passengers departing the Boeing 777 that was parked on the tarmac. The passengers and crew were then taken to a separate aircraft, that took off just after 15:00 – three hours after the initial flight was set to take to the skies. Chinese media have since stated that the power charger wasn’t in use when the fire took place. The Chinese airlines do allow lithium batteries to be taken onto planes in the hand luggage section, however, they aren’t allowed to be packed in checked-in luggage.

Fire at old munitions factory in Maribyrnong, Australia contained

Fire at old munitions factory in Maribyrnong, Australia contained Firefighters successfully managed to bring a notable blaze at an old munitions factory site in Melbourne’s inner west under control on the 28th February. Just before 13:00 in Australia, the fire managed to break out in the grasslands on Cordite Avenue, and subsequently spread at a rapid pace to the point it engulfed three warehouse buildings. From the distance, thick black smoke was seen billowing above the factory site. Just before 16:30, the fire was brought under control by a plethora of firefighters, with 17 fire crews remaining on the scene in the immediate aftermath. Prior to that, firefighters had taken on the blaze externally while they waited for advice from the Department of Defence – who own the land in question – before initiating an internal attack on the fire. What made the fire more difficult to handle is that the defence land is heavily contaminated with asbestos, volatile solvents and explosive residues all within the soil. According to an MFB spokeswoman, it was too early to judge just how toxic the smoke was. 25 MFB fire appliances turned up while a water helicopter was deployed, and a water tanker and pumper were also at the scene as part of the 25 appliances.

Rapper Stormzy uses BRITs performance to question Theresa May regarding Grenfell

Rapper Stormzy uses BRITs performance to question Theresa May regarding Grenfell UK grime artist Stormzy questioned Prime Minister Theresa May regarding her actions in relation to the Grenfell Tower disaster during a live performance at the BRIT Awards. Last June, 71 people died after an electrical fire ignited and subsequently spread, with the flames tragically engulfing the entire building after they reached the exterior cladding. There has been widespread dissatisfaction at how the government has handled the disaster, with many accusing May of coming across as out of touch with the people, and not being authoritative enough to make sure this doesn’t happen again. There has also been a huge amount of criticism levelled at the Conservative party for how they’ve dealt with the residents who survived, as five months after, a vast majority were still living in bed and breakfasts. It was an eventful night for Stormzy, who won two BRITs, taking home Best British Male and Best British Album for his 2017 effort, ‘Gang Signs and Prayer’, before delivering a live performance of his track, ‘Blinded by Your Grace’. After his performance had finished, the 24-year-old launched into a freestyle rap that tore into May, while demanding to know where the money pledged towards helping the victims was. “Yo, Theresa May where’s that money for Grenfell?”, Stormzy rapped. “What, you thought we just forgot about Grenfell? You criminals, and you got the cheek to call us savages. You should do some jail time you should pay some damages, we should burn your house down and see if you can manage this.” The 2017 version of the BRITs were viewed by 5.4 million people, and it’s expected that the 2018 version would have garnered a similar level of viewers.

Disaster alerts for forest and land fires declared in four Indonesian provinces

Disaster alerts for forest and land fires declared in four Indonesian provinces After the threats of forest and land fires continue to rise at the start of the dry season in Indonesia, four provinces declared disaster alerts. The Central Kalimantan, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan and Riau provinces all issued the alerts, and all of whom have been subject and prone to forest fires in years gone by. The disaster management agency of Indonesia have stated that the governors of the provinces came to the decision on both the recommendation of the agency, and due to the number of hotspots. “With the disaster alert status, the provinces will have easier access in terms of personal, logistics, funding and support from the central government to tackle forest fires,” National Disaster Management Authority spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement on the 21st February. According to the agency, there were a total of 90 hotspots throughout Indonesia between the 20th and 21st, which was detected by the Terra and Aqua satellites, with the majority of the hotspots being located in West Kalimantan. Earlier in February, the Indonesian President – Joko Widodo – encouraged the authorities to maintain their efforts in preventing land and forest fires this year, in order to ensure that the Asian games – hosted by Indonesia – can proceed as planned without any disruption. In addition, Mr Widodo also promised the Prime Ministers of Singapore and Malaysia that 2018 would be a haze-free year.
