Hochiki Europe protects students from false alarms

Hochiki Europe protects students from false alarms For many students, the prospect of moving away from home and living alone for the first time can be daunting. Thanks to leading manufacturer of life safety solutions, Hochiki Europe, and NSC Sicherheitstechnik, students living at two sophisticated accommodation developments in Germany have one less thing to worry about when it comes to fire safety. The new developments are eight storeys high and capable of accommodating 239 residents at each location. Both named The Flag, they provide a flexible, smart city living space for students in Frankfurt and Munich, and feature premium fire detection and alarm equipment supplied by Hochiki Europe. One challenge that arose when specifying the life safety solutions for The Flag was the complexity of the sites. The nature of the buildings called for compliance with European EN standards including EN 54 Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems. It was also imperative that products selected offered optimum reliability to safeguard the wellbeing of occupants and limit the risk of false alarms. As well as being reliable, the products had to help keep running costs down across the sites, without compromising quality. Using products that offer enhanced energy efficiency credentials was therefore essential. To address these challenges, Hochiki Europe’s German-based systems partner, NSC Sicherheitstechnik, worked with building owners to identify and provide a range of life safety solutions for the two sites. This included a Solution F1 18 loop fire alarm system with 800 multi sensor detectors, which incorporate both smoke and thermal elements, and 925 base sounders. Multi sensors offer a number of benefits when it comes to reducing the risk of false alarms in residential environments, thanks to in-built intelligence. The sensors can be programmed in a way that ensures alarm conditions are reached only when smoke and heat are present at specific levels to minimise false alarms, and prevent unnecessary evacuations of residents. The base sounders selected for use likewise feature in-built intelligence, and have an auto shutdown feature to reduce the risk of noise pollution, a common issue in large housing developments such as The Flag. In addition, the base sounders offer a low current consumption to help increase energy efficiency. Both the multi sensors and base sounders are also compatible with Hochiki Europe’s Enhanced Systems Protocol (ESP), a range which offers high performance with enhanced reliability. This ensured compliance with strict fire safety standards as required by the developers. Frank Schade, Sales Manager at NSC Sicherheitstechnik, added: “By using these intelligent life safety solutions from Hochiki Europe, we have been given peace of mind that our premises are fully protected and compliant with international legislation.” Both of The Flag developments were completed in 2017. Felixstowe Port Warehouses Benefit From Patol Aspirating Smoke Detection

Felixstowe Port Warehouses Benefit From Patol Aspirating Smoke Detection A project to protect the largest warehousing and cross-docking facility in one of the UK’s busiest ports has demonstrated the suitability of aspirating smoke detection (ASD) for buildings characterised by large open spaces and high roofs. PD Portcentric Logistics is based on the 28-acre site near to Dock Gate One in the Port of Felixstowe on the east coast of the UK. Recognised as a prime location for the import and export of goods, the port is the UK’s largest in terms of size and accommodates some of the world’s biggest ships, including deep-draughted vessels through its extensive deepwater complex. As the largest customs approved warehousing facility in the Port, PD is central to the Felixstowe operation. With 3 warehouses containing a wide range of goods – from FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) and general merchandise to retail products and ambient foodstuffs – protecting the contents, as well as the structure of the warehouses themselves, is crucial. The 3 high-level bay warehouses are protected from fire by a total of 24 Securiton ASD detectors from Patol, the exclusive distributor in the UK for Securiton’s SecuriRAS range of ASD systems. The project saw the installation of the detectors and associated pipework by BBC Fire Protection, part of Marlowe plc, who have been supplying fire protection solutions throughout the UK for almost 40 years. The flexibility offered by the SecuriRAS range was an important factor in the selection of the technology. By using a mix of detectors, the needs of the different areas of the warehouses were met. 11 ASD 535 two-channel detectors – the flagship model and one of the fastest growing ASD units in the world – were employed across the 3 warehouses, along with 13 ASD 532 compact single-channel detectors for the smaller areas. The benefits offered by ASD systems – which are ultra-sensitive, quiet and unobtrusive – ensures they are an increasingly viable and effective alternative to standard point detection, leading to their widespread adoption across numerous applications. In the case of high bay warehouses, with their elevated roofs and large open spaces, point detectors can be rendered ineffective due to stratification – the term used when smoke sits in a layer well below the roof – which occurs when the smoke has insufficient thermal buoyancy to reach the roof where the detectors would ordinarily be sited. Beam detectors are sometimes therefore used as an alternative in warehouse applications but they are inherently low in sensitivity and also prone to false alarms caused by building movement, airborne activity and high-level operation of equipment such as cranes or forklifts interrupting the beams. Maintenance of roof-mounted detectors at these sorts of heights and in the quantities required to protect such large areas is also problematic. In the PD Portcentric Logistics project, the ASD detectors were placed in strategic locations throughout the warehouses at a low level to ensure ease of access. This was possible because the detection chambers can be placed away from the areas being protected, a particular advantage in buildings with high ceilings but also beneficial for applications with floor voids and other inaccessible areas. The SecuriRAS range is EN54-20 approved to class A, B & C and provides options for effective, scalable fire monitoring of small single premises through to much larger facilities. First UK Distributor For Blazecut Fire Suppression System

First UK Distributor For Blazecut Fire Suppression System BlazeCut Fire Suppression System manufacturer, The BlazeCut® Company has appointed Tecserv UK as its first independent distributor for industrial and commercial applications in the UK. The BlazeCut® fire suppression system is designed to protect small closed spaces at greater risk of fire and operates automatically without any external power source. An extinguishing agent is charged in a storage tube that is installed in the area requiring fire protection. If a fire is detected, the high temperature or the fire automatically melts the storage tube forming a nozzle to release an extinguishing agent. This action can both help to suppress the fire and activate other fire alarm triggers that can help to initiate further emergency responses in order to prevent the fire from spreading. Commenting on the appointment, Grahame Tilley, Tecserv UK CEO said, “BlazeCut Fire Suppression System is highly innovative and quite unique in the UK. We are delighted to have been appointed as the first UK distributor and expect the demand to be very high.” He continued, “Initially, we will be raising awareness of the availability of this new product to electrical installation companies, IT network providers and automotive manufacturers. However, in time, we hope to sell it on-line to retail customers who wish to install the detection equipment to the engine bay of their own motor vehicles, or in the home adjacent to audio visual equipment or home cinema’s, which could create two or three new jobs at Tecserv.” BlazeCut® is suitable for the protection of spaces such as electrical switchboards and fuse boxes, IT network cabinets and server rooms, audio-video equipment, vehicle and marine engine rooms and other enclosed spaces at risk of fire. Commenting Sherwin Barroga, BlazeCut®  Business Manager for the UK and Eire added, “I am delighted to be working with Tecserv to promote our products within UK markets. BlazeCut® products have been fully certified and have undergone rigorous testing to gain CE, ISO and AQAP approval. I am sure that demand will be high for this highly effective and cost-efficient means of suppressing fire within spaces that are at a high risk of fire.” Tecserv believes that insurers may view the BlazeCut Fire Suppression System and as a positive approach to risk management by companies who choose to install them. This may be an additional benefit if this further precaution results in more favourable insurance terms. The BlazeCut® Company has a global sales head office in Sydney, Australia, a manufacturing facility in Slovakia, Central Europe and worldwide sales and after care support delivered from the above as well as the UK, America, Thailand and South Africa. Scottish fire and rescue service assists stranded M80 motorists

Scottish fire and rescue service assists stranded M80 motorists Following the UK’s ‘Beast From the East’ situation, firefighters in Scotland overcame challenging conditions to provide food, water, blankets and comfort to hundreds of drivers stranded overnight on the M80. They accessed Scottish Fire and Rescue Service supplies and also bought hundreds of pounds worth of food and water from supermarkets. And they transported the vital supplies in SFRS 4×4 vehicles to the motorway which had been heavily impacted by snow, stranding motorists. The crews also provided comfort and safety advice throughout the night. Firefighters worked in tandem with partner agencies and volunteers with specialist vehicles able to overcome the hazardous conditions. Those volunteers were mobilised through the Community Asset Register which is operated and activated by SFRS Operations Control at times of significant emergency to enhance a full response. Assistant Chief Officer Lewis Ramsay is the SFRS Director of Response and Resilience. He said: “This was an unprecedented weather event and there is absolutely no doubt that our firefighters went above and beyond the call of duty. “They did everything within their power, working with our Operations Control staff and volunteers, to ensure those stranded were provided with every available support. “Severe weather conditions is a new and emerging risk, and this absolutely underlines why it is vital that we prepare, train and equip our firefighters to respond as quickly and effectively as possible. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank our crews, our partners and all of the volunteers who worked to overcome these challenging conditions to reach those in need, and also at incidents across the country throughout the night. “It is now imperative that the public continues to follow all available weather updates and safety advice to stay safe.”
