Advanced protection for prestigious Miami high-rise

Advanced protection for prestigious Miami high-rise A networked, intelligent fire system from Advanced has updated the fire protection in one of Florida’s major real estate developments. The system was installed by Alemany Building Solutions at Sands Pointe, an upscale, 29-story condominium located in Sunny Isles Beach on a barrier island in northeast Miami-Dade County. Sunny Isles Beach has been a major real estate development location for luxury high-rise condominiums and hotels since the early 2000s. Drawing on 15 years’ experience delivering engineered fire safety solutions in large, complex developments, Alemany Building Solutions specified Advanced’s Axis AX fire system for this high-profile development as the customer specification called for a robust, technically advanced and cost-effective fire detection and audio solution. Audio is a particular challenge. The local fire codes require a notification appliance in every bedroom, addressable smoke detectors inside every unit, multiple dampers per floor for smoke control, and pre-recorded messages in multiple languages due to the region’s demographic, where the major languages spoken are English, Spanish, and Russian. The fire alarm system met UL464 requirements for the low frequency 520Hz tone, with intelligent smoke detectors and 520Hz speakers fitted inside every bedroom of the building. The installation benefited from Alemany’s expertise coupled with the ease-of-installation and commissioning offered by Advanced’s system. The fire system network consisted of four data-gathering voice panels located through the building along with a command center giving oversight and control over the entire system. Using addressable distributed audio amplifiers, the system is capable of providing selective paging through the building ensuring that a single damaged cable won’t affect system reliability. With customer care a priority, staff at the Sands Pointe Condominium underwent detailed training following installation to ensure competency and confidence in the system. Rey Alemany, President at Alemany Building Solutions, Corp said: “Advanced and Alemany Building Solutions provided the ideal combination of technology and a track record to meet the demanding specification requirements and installation constraints of Sands Pointe Condominium. “It’s satisfying to complete a job on time and within budget especially when satisfaction is shared between end customer and the installer. In my many years in the fire industry working with market-leading fire systems, Advanced remains superior when it comes to ease of programming and installation.” Ray Krickmier, VP of Sales at Advanced, said: “As powerful as our products are it takes companies like Alemany who have the knowledge and experience, to apply Advanced to sites such as this prestigious high-rise, in order to take full advantage of what our fire systems have to offer.”

Hochiki Europe to show latest life safety technology at Security Essen

Hochiki Europe to show latest life safety technology at Security Essen  Hochiki Europe, the leading manufacturer of life safety solutions, will be showcasing a range of its latest technology at Security Essen from 25th-28th September at MESSE ESSEN. Solutions on display at stand 6E30 include Hochiki Europe’s ACD-EN CO multi-sensor, the new range of short circuit isolator (SCI) sensors and FIREscape Emergency Lighting.   The ACD-EN is the most technologically superior multi-sensor ever developed by Hochiki Europe. In addition to smoke, heat and carbon monoxide (CO) detection elements, the ACD-EN also features a sophisticated mode enhancement called “+RFA”. In multi-mode with +RFA, any changes to the environment will automatically adjust the alarm threshold and sensitivity of the device; therefore reducing false alarms without compromising fire response times.   The SCI-integrated range offers specifiers and consultants an efficient, cost-effective and compliant solution to life safety. In many Central European markets, including Germany, legislation dictates that an isolator is required every time there is a change of device type on the loop; therefore having the SCI integrated into the sensor removes the need to buy separate SCI bases.   Hochiki Europe’s emergency lighting range, FIREscape, will also will be on display at Security Essen. FIREscape is a unique, highly cost effective and environmentally friendly emergency lighting system based on LED technology.   Speaking ahead of the exhibition, Mark Jones, Export Manager at Hochiki Europe, commented: “We know that, for our customers in Germany and throughout Europe, legislation is a deciding factor when specifying life safety equipment on projects. Security Essen is great opportunity showcase our extensive product range, which includes wireless, marine and aspirating technology, and to help our customers find the right solutions for their projects.”   Over 40,000 visitors from 45 different countries are expected to attend Security Essen, which will host over 1,000 exhibitors.   For more information on Hochiki Europe’s range of life safety solutions, visit: www.hochikieurope.com

Human rights, as well as health and safety, are compromised by Grenfell-style combustible cladding

Human rights, as well as health and safety, are compromised by Grenfell-style combustible cladding  The British Safety Council welcomes the challenge to the government that a failure to address the risk to life posed by flammable external cladding, similar to that used on the Grenfell Tower, is a breach of human rights. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has written to the Department for Housing, Communities and Local Government (DHCLG) outlining its concerns about the continued use of combustible cladding in existing buildings and advising the department of its responsibilities under human rights laws to protect lives. The Commission has expressed its concern that the consultation on the use of external cladding omits any reference to the government’s duty to protect lives under article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights and schedule 1 to the Human Rights Act 1998. “The British Safety Council has participated in the consultation, calling for much tighter building controls, clearer guidance and effective enforcement,” said Lawrence Waterman, Chairman of the British Safety Council. “The EHRC intervention takes a wider view and supports our long-held and consistent argument that health and safety is a crucial underpinning of the human right to life.” He continued: “The British Safety Council vision of no-one being injured or made ill by their work will only be realised when everyone cooperates to defend this basic human right for all. We call on the government to take a much clearer lead and responsibility for past failures to protect life so tragically highlighted by the Grenfell Tower fire.”

39 people killed after bridge collapses in Genoa, Italy

39 people killed after bridge collapses in Genoa, Italy Anger is growing in Italy after a bridge collapsed in Genoa on Tuesday, killing 39 people. An 80 metre stretch of the Morandi bridge caved in during a heavy thunderstorm sending about 35 cars and several trucks onto the rail tracks that lay 45 metres below.   Fire crews were still pulling people out of the rubble hours after the tragedy took place with up to a dozen people believed to have been saved by local firefighters.   The country’s anger is now focused on the company that is in charge of operating and maintaining the bridge, Autostrade per l’Italia.   Transport Minister, Danilo Toninelli has called for Autostrade executives to resign and has launched an attempt to revoke the company’s contract as well as hit them with a £134 million fine.   Autostrade said in a statement that it had invested more than €1 billion a year between 2012 and 2017 in maintaining and upgrading its network and ensuring its motorways were safe. The company said the improvements were reflected in a reduction in road accident and mortality rates. A fresh round of maintenance work was due to start in October.

Rosenbauer launches premium aerial ladder, the XS 3.0

Rosenbauer launches premium aerial ladder, the XS 3.0 Rosenbauer has launched a new, premium aerial ladder – the L32A XS 3.0 – following two years of the firm’s current model achieving unprecedented demand. With Rosenbauer announcing record global sales of the L32A XS 2.0 in 2017-18, the latest version of the appliance was introduced on Tuesday 10th July at Rosenbauer’s aerial factory in Karlsruhe, Germany. The XS – which incorporates world renowned Metz Technology – is now available for fire and rescue services across the UK. Boasting an extended outreach, in-reach and rescue capability from the previous version, the appliance offers brigades a machine with which can get even closer to a structure, and reach more incident points, from a single set-up position. Simultaneously, the articulated ladder has been modified to require a distance of just 6.15m from a facade, making it an ideal solution where limited space is a consideration. Newly developed control technology now also provides a maximum cage loading of 500kg – the largest weighting capacity on the European market. This is an essential factor for modern day bariatric rescue challenges, faced by brigades globally. A new controller within the 3.0 provides ten times the computing power of its predecessor model, meaning that it can be equipped with even more powerful technology, such as state-of-the-art floodlighting and camera systems. The UK’s fire and rescue services are no stranger to the Rosenbauer L32A XS turntable ladder, with units on duty throughout the UK as far as Scotland, down to Avon Fire Service in the South West of England, and many in between. “Our turntable ladders have represented our class, reliability and durability amongst the UK fire and rescue services for decades, but particularly in the past five years where we have truly raised the bar of quality,” commented Rosenbauer UK’s Managing Director, Oliver North. “With the development of the 3.0, our engineers in Karlsruhe have proven – emphatically – why we’re a global leader in the supply of turntable ladders, and I feel truly privileged to have the historic ‘Metz pedigree’ evolving our aerial firefighting and rescue products as far as technology can increase performance. “We remain the single only aerial appliance manufacturer with a direct supply chain to the UK Brigades as the end user, meaning that all subsequent training, service and back up remains in house – without the requirement for a third party dealer sat in between us and the customer. “Ensuring maximal firefighter safety and operational effectiveness, in conjunction with offering the most reliable supply chain and service back-up available in the UK fire market, the XS 3.0 truly reaffirms Rosenbauer aerials as best-in-class.”

The Responsibility of Fire Safety in Healthcare

The Responsibility of Fire Safety in Healthcare An effective fire safety management and fire emergency plan requires both active and passive fire precautions and a high degree of management. In healthcare facilities, an even higher degree of safety consideration is required since its occupants may need additional assistance to escape in the event of a fire. Andrew Shaw, architectural consultant of Allegion UK, discusses ways to optimise fire safety in healthcare, and why a bespoke solution is key.      Fire safety is a major talking point in the industry right now. With the ongoing Grenfell Inquiry, concerns around fire safety are considerably high and rightly so. There is much confusion stemming from a distinct lack of clarity regarding exactly what the requirements are.   What we’re seeing at Allegion are not just issues pertaining to high-rise buildings, but across many different building types and industry sectors, in both public and government-owned buildings.   Healthcare facilities, in particular, pose incredibly complex safety challenges. Management teams must  consider the facility’s occupants, the layout of the building, the purpose of each area, as well as carrying out regular maintenance checks and risk assessments and many other factors.   A healthcare facility’s fire safety measures will need to be both compliant with fire safety regulations and bespoke to the facility’s specific requirements.   The regulations are complex, and navigating a way through them to an effective fire safety plan can be difficult and painstaking. Here we provide some guidance on the key area of fire doors.   Fire Doors – do’s and don’ts   A number of regulations apply to both new and existing buildings in the UK, with the responsibility for fire risk assessment falling on the ‘responsible person.’   Fire doors play a major role in the fire safety and protection of buildings. A damaged, faulty or misused fire door is one of the most common breaches of fire safety regulations.   A propped open fire door, for example, is rendered obsolete. This is because in the event of a fire, they can only do their job if they can close. An open door will not prevent the spread of fire and smoke through a building to allow occupants to evacuate safety and protect the building.   The most common type of fire door, FD30, is appropriate in most cases. However, with fire doors, which are part of a compartment wall that separates buildings, a minimum of FD60 is required   Carrying out risk assessments should be regular practice, as this ensures fire doors are kept in good working order.   The holistic view   A recent investigation into the Grenfell Tower fire dubbed the tower a “culture of non-compliance” on account for its lack of compliance with basic fire safety measures. Damaged or incorrectly fitted fire doors with gaps of up to 50mm between the door and frame, and missing door closers, meant the fire doors failed to perform.   This means the fire failed to be compartmentalized, and the spreading was undoubtedly more severe than it should have been.   On top of this, last year, fire chiefs warned that 38 hospitals in the UK are as dangerous as the Grenfell Tower. As a result, more than 17,000 care homes, private hospitals and hospices were ordered to carry out imminent fire safety checks on their buildings.   As an industry, it’s often easy to neglect one area of fire safety and prioritise another. For example, fixating on training or evacuation plans can force other areas such as the checking and maintenance of fire doors into second place. The holistic approach – that is, keeping on top of all areas equally – is key.   Bespoke over value engineering   With each facility being unique and diverse, it’s important to know which fire safety solutions and products are appropriate.   Implementing suitable products is just as important as the building’s fire safety management and training of staff. Because each facility will be different in terms of use and design, fire safety procedures must accommodate each diverse performance requirement.   In considering this, it becomes easy to make the mistake of prioritising cost over quality when this doesn’t have to be the case. Although, an effective fire safety strategy also doesn’t always mean cost-efficiency should be ruled out.   Above all, understanding fire safety requirements, possessing adequate fire safety solutions knowledge and carrying out appropriate staff training requires minimal costs.   Whilst many healthcare facilities, such as hospitals, may be facing considerable budgetary pressures, requesting necessary assistance or expert guidance will help a facility meet fire safety standards and requirements based on its specific needs. This includes aesthetics and budget.

Hochiki Europe brings combined emergency lighting & fire detection system to market

Hochiki Europe brings combined emergency lighting & fire detection system to market Hochiki Europe, the leading manufacturer of life safety solutions, has launched FIREscape+ – an innovative system which combines emergency lighting, fire detection and wayfinding technology. The solution, which is the first of its kind, significantly enhances building occupant safety during an emergency, while simultaneously offering additional efficiencies for building owners.   FIREscape+ features Hochiki Europe’s highly successful and cost effective FIREscape emergency lighting system, as well as its ESP intelligent range of fire detection products. By combining the two ranges and creating dual function exit signs, Hochiki Europe can now offer integrated life safety and innovative wayfinding technology in one system.   Innovative wayfinding In the event of a fire, dynamic emergency exit signs will illuminate with a red cross to prevent building occupants using an escape route compromised by fire. Meanwhile in unaffected areas, the exit signs will illuminate with the internationally recognised BS EN ISO 7010 green graphic, to safely guide building occupants to the closest available emergency exit. This ensures that building occupants are given the best possible opportunity to escape; even if they are unfamiliar with the building layout.   Intelligent false alarm management The integration of Hochiki Europe’s Enhanced Systems Protocol (ESP) technology also offers a number of benefits when it comes to false alarm management. Every 24 hours, the system checks for any changes to the environment and recalibrates the sensors to suit. In addition, each sensor can be individually adjusted to match the expected risk of its environment, while alarm verification technology uses time delay algorithms to eliminate unwanted alarms. These features help ensure the life safety system operates at optimum performance at all times.   Efficient installation and maintenance FIREscape+ is the only truly combined fire detection and emergency lighting solution currently available to the market. A single panel controlling both fire detection and emergency lighting units on a single loop, can cut costs by up to 40 per cent. Furthermore, the range operates at extra low voltage without the need for mains power, further reducing the cost of ownership.   Ian Watts, Emergency Lighting Manager at Hochiki Europe noted: “We know that our customers, especially those working with large premises, want to be able to specify and install the most effective life safety solutions at an affordable cost. By integrating our fire detection and emergency lighting technology, we’re able to offer an innovative range that helps them do just that.   “Since we first unveiled FIREscape+, its launch has been greatly anticipated.
