Cambridge Fire Department accepts delivery of a Pierce Ascendant Aerial Tower

The Cambridge Fire Department in Massachusetts has taken delivery of a Pierce Ascendant 100’ Heavy-Duty Aerial Tower with Idle Reduction Technology and TAK-4  T3. Pierce Manufacturing Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation company, announced today that the Cambridge Fire Department in Massachusetts has taken delivery of a Pierce Ascendant 100’ Heavy-Duty Aerial Tower with mid-mount configuration on a Velocity custom chassis. Sold through Pierce dealer, Allegiance Fire and Rescue, the new fire truck will replace aging apparatus and will support the city’s sustainability initiatives with Idle Reduction Technology and TAK-4 T3 Independent Rear Suspension for added control and stability. “The City of Cambridge is an old city and densely populated with streets that are narrow and demand a tight turning radius,” said Gerard Mahoney, Chief of the Cambridge Fire Department. “Several of our firehouses were built for horse-drawn fire apparatus, and it is now a challenge to design fire trucks with the constraints of such narrow doorways. Firefighters sound alarm over UN climate report

Fire Brigades Union General Secretary Matt Wrack has responded to the UN’s latest major report into climate change, which was published yesterday. He said that: “Firefighters here and across the world are on the front line of the climate crisis. We see the effects of climate change every time we fight wildfires and save people from floods, and we will fight as hard as we can for politicians to wake up and take notice. As a humanitarian service we cannot stand by and watch this happen. ”This report confirms that human activity is responsible for climate change and we are running out of time to save ourselves. But this requires fundamental political, social and economic change across the world, and those in power have, so far, failed in the face of this immense challenge. “The report tallies closely with what firefighters across the world experience on a daily basis: a planet rapidly breaking down. Comelit’s fire safety update to ambitious school development

Comelit’s Atena fire detection panels have been installed at an award-winning new eight-form entry secondary school and sixth form academy, designed as part of a £100m development in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire. Designed by architects Bond Bryan and built by Chase Homes, Broxbourne School offers multiple educational buildings, including a new indoor sports hall, 3G football pitch, a multi-use games area for sports such as netball and tennis, together with The Broxbourne Music Centre. Winner of the School Building Awards, presented by the Education Business Awards, the new campus, completed five months ahead of schedule, will cater to the 1,500 students aged 11 to 18, as well as the wider community. Maintenance and upkeep were uneconomical and the buildings did not meet modern standards or student requirements. “We’re all so excited to be in our new buildings which enhance not only the learning experience of our students but also provide a fantastic resource for local groups and the wider community in and around Broxbourne. Of course, within this, a significant part of the delivery was ensuring the buildings were fire safe, and compliant to latest standards, as a duty of care to all who use our truly impressive new school.” An ambitious and aspirational space, the fire safety essential equipment needed to measure up to the scale of the development. Raging wildfires in Greece show climate change effects

Greece is experiencing its worst heatwave since 1987, resulting in wildfires causing devastating destruction throughout Greece over the past week, further fuelled by strong winds and parched vegetation. The current heatwave has pushed temperatures to 45C in Greece and parts of southern Italy. Amid a record heat wave, wildfires are also raging in Turkey, Lebanon and Italy. In Turkey, more than 500 square miles of coastal forest have been torched, and eight people have been killed. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated. This is yet another example of the effects that climate change is having, climate scientists have warned that some effects are “irreversible”. Temperatures have now risen by about 1.1C since the period 1850 to 1900. Richard Allan, a Professor of Climate Science at University of Reading, and an IPCC lead Author, said each fraction of a degree of warming was crucial. “You are promoting moderate extreme weather events to the premier league of extreme events,” he said. In recent days, over 500 fires have destroyed tens of thousands of hectares of forests and hundreds of homes. Forcing the evacuation of dozens of villages and thousands of people and causing public anger at delays in government response. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece, went on television late on Monday to make a public apology, “I fully understand the pain of our fellow citizens who saw their homes or property burned,” he said. “Any failures will be identified. And responsibility will be assigned wherever necessary.” He also approved a 500 million euro aid budget for the island of Evia and the Attica region around Athens, which have been worst affected by the forest fires. More than 850 firefighters are being assisted by at least a dozen helicopters. A volunteer firefighter has died, and two other firefighters were in intensive care with severe burns. The flames have killed three in Greece and several people have been injured, some critically. Sixteen people have been arrested on suspicion of arson or negligent arson, the police said. Sentinel-2 satellite imagery showed swaths of forest scorched by the wildfires in Attica, Evia and the Peloponnese, with the Athens National Observatory estimating that about 65,000 hectares (approximately 160,600 acres) had been burned in total by August 8. Much of the attention was focused on the following Tuesday on keeping the fire out of Evia’s northern hub of Istiaia, where 7,000 residents had yet to evacuate. Many mayors around the country have complained of a serious lack of aerial support in fighting the fires, despite government assurances of having set aside ample resources. The Evia force includes hundreds of firefighters from Romania, Serbia and Ukraine. Ventura County CA orders ten Beam Global EV ARC Off-Grid EV charging systems

Beam Global,  provider of innovative sustainable technology for electric vehicle (EV) charging, outdoor media and energy security, announced that the County of Ventura in California has ordered ten EV ARC solar-powered EV charging systems for fleet and public use. Ventura’s EV ARC units are equipped with ChargePoint Dual Port and Enel X JuiceBox chargers. Fleet units are expected to deploy at the County of Ventura Remote Motor Pool locations. Public charging is expected to deploy in Oxnard at one of MICOP’s (Mixteco Indigena Community Organizing Project) offices that serves local disadvantaged communities. Each EV ARC generates and stores its own clean electricity and delivers that electricity to power EVs, day or night, and during inclement weather and power outages. “The County of Ventura’s Climate Action Plan strives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 41% below 2015 levels. Electrification of County fleet vehicles is an important part of this plan,” said Chair of the Board of Supervisors for the County of Ventura, Linda Parks. “Funded in part by the California Energy Commission, the new Beam EV ARC charging stations are a model in clean energy because they are powered by solar energy and we are doubly fortunate to be able to install them without additional costs.” The competitive grant funding was awarded to Ventura County from the California Energy Commission’s (CEC’s) Clean Transportation Program, Electric Vehicle Ready Communities Phase II- Blueprint Implementation Grant. Requiring no connection to the utility grid, Beam Global products eliminate disruptive construction projects, costly grid upgrades and utility charges to deliver significant long-term savings to city budgets. “Beam continues to see growing momentum in multi-unit orders as corporate and government entities across the U.S. move from trial to build-out under their initiatives to combat climate change with sustainable EV charging infrastructure,” said Beam CEO Desmond Wheatley. “Organizations are realizing the total cost of ownership advantages of off-grid sustainable EV charging now that they’ve experienced the expense, disruption, time and risks often associated with in ground charging. Dependable Emergency Vehicles and Volta Power Systems partner

Dependable Emergency Vehicles and Volta Power Systems collaborated to develop fire trucks with zero-emission auxiliary power units (APUs) that cut idling time and the need for on-scene generators. The power systems are part of a 16-vehicle, multi-year contract for Toronto Fire Services (TFS) to assist the organization in reducing CO2 emissions, helping them meet anti-idling goals, and improving safety by reducing noise at emergency scenes. Dependable completed the first truck featuring the new APU for TFS in November of 2020. Powered by Volta’s technology, Dependable’s Idle Reduction & Energy Storage System (IRESS) provides each fire truck with a scalable energy storage pack and customized distribution system. The system provides all the power necessary for warning and scene lights, air conditioning, body lights, tank circulation, communication electronics, and other loads for several hours without idling or using an auxiliary generator. IRESS does not require the installation of specialized charging infrastructure, simplifying the integration process for fire departments. “This technology enables municipal and commercial fleets to not only reduce CO2 emissions but also benefit from the reduced costs of fuel and maintenance,” said Massimo Natale, Technical Team Coordinator of Dependable. “We have designed IRESS to provide clean and consistent power that can be customized for all the various loads and capabilities our customers require.” The Nickel-Manganese Cobalt (NMC) lithium-ion technology in Volta’s system offers twice the energy density of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePo) systems on the market without compromising safety or performance. The packs provide consistent power while reducing emissions, fuel usage, maintenance costs, and the storage space necessary for the packs. Based on a baseline of four APU system run hours per day, each vehicle could save up to $15,002 ($11,833 USD) annually in maintenance and fuel costs. Frontline Communications secures order with Pasco County Fire Rescue

Frontline Communications, a division of Pierce Manufacturing, Inc., and a subsidiary of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK), announced today that it has secured a purchase order for two highly customized vehicles from Pasco County Fire Rescue in Florida including a C-45 Velocity mobile decontamination (decon) unit, and a C-45X-2 Velocity mobile rehabilitation (rehab) unit. These specialized vehicles will provide critical support at structural fires and long-duration deployments to aid with the removal of harmful carcinogens from gear and equipment. Additionally, they will provide respite to avoid overexertion from heat and weather with access to fluids, energy snacks, medical evaluations, and more. Industry standard is to issue every firefighter two sets of turnout gear, so after one is soiled, it can be bagged and stored on the truck, with another set available in the event the crew needs to go immediately to another scene. According to Chief of Pasco County Fire Rescue, Scott Cassin, the cost and storage of two sets of gear was prohibitive and a challenge they aimed to solve. “We turned our sights to selecting purpose-built vehicles that would handle the on-site decontamination of gear and rehabilitation needs our dedicated team of firefighters require during complex structural fires or long-duration deployments,” said Chief Cassin. “We worked with Frontline Communications to design a custom decon unit that is an industry first configuration and will help us save time and energy cleaning equipment. We also collaborated with Frontline Communications on the design of a custom rehab unit that will provide necessary aid. Our biggest return on investment is knowing we are protecting our firefighters from as many risks as possible.” According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety, firefighters have a 9% higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14% higher risk of dying from cancer than the general U.S. population. Additionally, the physical and emotional demands of the job put firefighters at an increased risk for cardiovascular events, which are responsible for 45% of on-duty deaths.
