Hochiki Europe has appointed James Morrison as new Regional Sales Manager

LIFE SAFETY solutions manufacturer Hochiki Europe has appointed James Morrison as the new Regional Sales Manager for the North of the UK replacing Richard Wharram who moves into one of two new roles to support the accelerated growth in system sales and Hochiki’s System Partner Programme alongside UK Systems Manager Neil Eves. As the new RSM for the North covering Scotland, Northern Ireland and the North of England, James brings with him a plethora of expertise. Pumps: Is it time for change?

International Fire Buyer looks at the different types of fire pumps available for installation and firefighting use and their efficiency  Fire pumps are an essential part of many water-based fire protection systems. They are used to increase the pressure (measured in psi and bar) of a water source when that source is not adequate for the system it’s supplying. These are commonly found in buildings that tend to have a high-pressure demand such as high-rises or storage warehouses and on fire trucks.   There are many types of fire pumps available. It is important to select the correct type of pump for the installation project to avoid excessive costs, and to avoid excessive pressures that might damage your system. If all the factors are not taken into consideration it could result in a pump installation that does not achieve the necessary pressure requirements which could require a new pump tobe installed.  There are two main categories of pumps for building installation: positive displacement and centrifugal.  Positive displacement pumps   Positive displacement pumps are characterised by a method of producing flow by capturing a specific volume of water per pump revolution and pushing it out through the discharge line. A bicycle tire pump is an example of a positive displacement pump we commonly see. Positive displacement pumps create very high pressures but have limited flow volume compared with centrifugal pumps. These are not as common because they have a specialized use, primarily with water mist and foam-water systems.   Centrifugal pumps   Centrifugal pumps are the most common fire pumps and are used with most systems. With centrifugal pumps, pressure is developed principally by the action of centrifugal force or spinning. Water in centrifugal pumps enters the suction inlet and passes to the center of the impeller. The rotation of the impeller, in turn, drives the water by centrifugal force to the rim where it discharges. Centrifugal pumps can handle large volumes of water while providing high pressure boosts.   The following are different centrifugal type pump configurations:  Horizontal split-case pump  With a horizontal split-case pump, the flow is split and enters the impeller from opposite sides of the pump housing. As the name implies, this is a pump installed with a split casing that can be opened for pump maintenance access and is connected to the driver by a horizontal shaft.  They are very reliable, come in a wide range of rated flow and pressure capacities, are easy to maintain due to their relatively easy split-case access, and can be used with both electric and diesel drivers. However, these also typically need the most space of all types of fire pumps.   Vertical turbine pump  A vertical turbine pump is the only type of pump allowed by NFPA 20, Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection that can start with negative suction pressure or take water under a lift condition such as from a below grade source such as a river or subgrade tank. These pumps can be used with raw water sources such as ponds, lakes, and rivers. Vertical turbine pumps come in a wide range of capacities and pressures, and they can be used with diesel and electric drivers.   In-line pump  In-line pumps are useful where space is limited. These can be driven by both a vertical or horizontal shaft (end suction type). Vertical shaft types, which are the most common, have the driver located directly above the pump. These are typically one of the less expensive units and take the least amount of space but, they are also one of the more expensive to repair. Pump maintenance and repair can be difficult because the motor must be lifted off and removed to gain access to the pump, unlike a split-case unit. With these pumps, the suction flange and discharge flange are on approximately the same plane. In-line pumps have a limited capacity of typically no more than 1,500 gpm (5,678 L/min), and they can only be used with an electric driver which limits their potential applications.  End suction pump  An end suction pump has a discharge outlet perpendicular to the suction inlet. These pumps are typically limited to a capacity of approximately 1,500 gpm (5,678 L/min). Compared to horizontal split-case fire pumps, they are more compact and require less installation space in a fire pump room where available space is a concern. End suction pumps can be used with either an electric driver or a diesel driver.  Multistage multiport pump  Multistage Multiport pumps use a single-driver that can be either an electric motor or a diesel engine that connects to a pump with multiple impellers in series in a single casing driven by a horizontal shaft. The casing has multiple ports, or discharge outlets, delivering different pressures – each port has increased pressure from the consecutive series impellers.  For example, one multistage multiport pump could be installed in a high-rise building having 30 floors. The building may be divided into three zones where a multistage multiport pump equipped with three discharge outlets would use each outlet for a zone. The first has an outlet pressure of 100 psi (6.9 bar) and feeds lower floors or lower zone (ground to 9th), the second has an outlet pressure of 175 psi (12.1 bar) and feeds middle floors or mid zone (10th to 19th), and a third has a discharge pressure of 300 psi (20.7 bar) and feeds the upper floors or high zone (20th to 30th).  Using multiport fire pumps could result in:   Fewer pumps required  Less pipe work and fewer valves, as one pump could eliminate the need for some control valves and pressure reducing devices  No requirement for water storage tanks on intermediate floors  Lower structural loads and associated costs as only one pump may be required  Energy conservation because less electricity and/or fuel will be consumed. Fire Buyer looks at the different types of fire monitor technology available currently in the market and how these help different hazardous environments Fire monitors are industrial monitor devices used to deliver large water flows for fire fighting purposes in high risk or hazardous industries. Industrial fixed monitors can be controlled automatically by means of a remote control station. Fixed Monitors are generally designed for heavy duty applications such as aggressive chemicals plants or offshore platforms. These heavy duty fire monitors are designed to withstand extreme conditions and are very robust and easy to maintain.   Portable monitors are devices used to deliver large water flows for fire fighting purposes in high risk or hazardous industries. Industrial portable monitors are used by private industrial fire professionals to protect high risk environments. Industrial fire protection equipment products cover heavy duty fire nozzles, rim seal floating roof tank fire protection systems and industrial fire suppression systems.   Automatic monitors are devices used to deliver large amounts of water or water/foam solution to remote targets. These monitors can be controlled manually via local mechanisms or automatically by means of actuators and remote control stations.  Most monitors are available with a full bronze body suitable for heavy duty applications such as aggressive chemicals plants or offshore platforms. Every piece should be designed to withstand extreme conditions granting a very long product lifetime. In this respect the variety of special materials or surface treatments makes this equipment very robust. Depending on the application the monitors can be equipped with jet/fog nozzles or branch pipes designed for water and water/foam solution.   The automatic movements on the horizontal and the vertical plane as well as the stream control (jet/fog) can be provided with hydraulic, electrohydraulic or electric actuators. Every monitor is designed to be controlled either manually or by remote controls available on a fixed or mobile wireless control station. The control stations are designed according to client specifications and may be manufactured for either hydraulic or electric actuators. Also the electric consoles may be equipped with PLC, achieving complete stand alone fire fighting systems, or can integrate accessories such as lightweight portable wireless consoles. Systems interconnections may be designed traditionally or with modbus redundant serial link (only for electric monitors) that allows sensible saving of system’s cables quantity requirements. All components, such as monitors and consoles, are available for hazardous areas installation in compliance with ATEX 94/9/CE Directive.   Technology  The SA Fire Niagara series fire fighting monitor represents one of the most advanced automatic monitors available nowadays for the fire industry. The monitor is designed to withstand extreme harsh and adverse environmental conditions offering to designers durable Bronze and Aluminium Bronze castings with waterways ranging from 3” to 6”. The monitors are ideal for high demanding installations such as jettys, harbours, refineries, chemical and offshore installations. The Niagara is available as an automatic monitor with a selection of three controls: hydraulic, electric and electro-hydraulic. The hydraulic Niagara is the traditional configuration of remote controlled monitors. It requires a hydraulic power pack that pumps oil into different metallic tubes. Each tube drives a movement of the hydraulic actuator governing the monitor movement. For each hydraulic actuator SA always includes an emergency hand-wheel for each movement that is used locally to take over the main power transmission.   An evolution of the Niagara is the electro-hydraulic series. These fire monitors are delivered with the hydraulic power pack installed underneath the monitor itself forming a unique standalone package that offers the electrical interface to the remote control panel and the hydraulic interface to the monitor actuators. This configuration allows for installation using electrical wiring from the control panel up to the hydraulic power pack, limiting the hydraulic tubing to a very short final interconnection. The absence of metallic tubing required in traditional hydraulic installation is appreciated in terms of lower installation and maintenance cost. Both hydraulic and electrohydraulic Niagara can rotate on the horizontal plane for 360° stop to stop. For both a special version of horizontal joint G/360 allows the monitor to rotate continuously. Those monitors are often preferred for installations where protection of multiple targets is required.  The other configuration of the Niagara monitor is electrical. A configuration that is achieved using electric actuators located on each monitor joint offering the maximum achievable remote control precision in the monitor movements. The electric monitors can be controlled by simple remote control stations or by programmable logic controllers PLC. In such cases the systems can be built implementing additional software features and reliability parameters that allows for SIL 2 compliant automatic monitor packages.   Depending on the application and fire fighting purpose, the terminal to be coupled to the monitor may be selected among nozzles for Jet/Fog stream, water cannons or foam branch pipes. The nozzles are the only solution that will include a control, whereas water cannons and foam branch pipes are normally fixed. Only in some cases an automatic deflector is added to foam branch pipes. SA Fire Protection offers a range of discharge options to achieve flow rates up to 20.000 L/min when used with the largest Niagara 6”. Independently from the controls used, the nozzles are designed for high performance and reliability and therefore are equipped with corrosion resistant materials and sand storm protector.  Platforms  Automatic monitors are often selected to protect marine terminals or refining installations where it is required to approach the fire from a certain height above ground. In this respect, organisations can use self standing modular designed structures that may be used to set up monitors at the highest level above protected targets. The structure can be manufactured in modules and designed for easy erection on site. A turret comes together with all accessories, such as external cooling system, internal main feeder, base valves and external ladder. The top of the turret may be equipped with a rotating platform that moves on the horizontal plane together with the automatic monitor. TV & film studios are often made up of various commercial environments, meaning they require ultra-dependable, sophisticated life safety systems to protect employees and visitors. London’s Riverside Studios in Hammersmith recognised this and recently made the decision to upgrade its fire detection offering. Stepping into the limelight, leading life safety manufacturer, Hochiki Europe, took centre stage, providing some cutting-edge multi-sensors to play the part. Riverside Studios, in the popular Hammersmith neighbourhood, is where artists and communities come together under one creative space. Originally an iron foundry, the property was transformed into a film studio in the 1930s, which it continued to be until its renovation in 2014. Riverside now comprises a TV studio, cinema and event area with surrounding bars and restaurants. Having so many different commercial and hospitality environments in one space meant fire safety experts and installers, Cornerstone Fire Systems, needed to think carefully when it came to upgrading the fire detection products across the premises. Neil Thurgood, project engineer at Cornerstone Fire Systems, said: “The team worked closely with representatives from Hochiki Europe to deliver the most suitable package of fire detection products for Riverside. There were a number of different elements to consider, from kitchen hazards to the practicality of organising a large-scale emergency evacuation, we knew that this project would need products that were ultra-dependable regardless of the environment, and we also knew we may require technical expertise and support. This is something that we were confident Hochiki Europe would be able to deliver due to its long-standing reputation in these areas.” A MULTI-FACETED OFFERING Mark Smith, UK Sales Manager at Hochiki Europe, was on hand to provide his expert insight and said: “When the brief came our way, it was clear that we needed to eliminate any possibility of false alarms, while also choosing a detection system that was flexible. Our ACD-EN multi-sensors, were the perfect solution for Riverside.” “It’s through their complex detection methods that these multi-sensors are able to significantly reduce the risk of unwanted alarms. Hochiki Europe’s ACD-EN multi-sensor, contains smoke, heat and CO sensing elements. Also, incorporated into the detector is a unique Suitable Moving AveRage Time (SMART) algorithm, which is able to determine the legitimacy of an alarm.” By taking samples from the environment, the ACD-EN multi-sensor constantly monitors its surroundings to adjust its sensitivity. If any transient activity is detected, the sensor automatically switches to the maximum number of samples, to quickly determine whether the transient is the start of a real fire or a false alarm. This ensures the sensor remains as sensitive as it needs to be. A SHOW-READY SOLUTION Hochiki Europe’s ACD multi-sensors have 24 EN approved modes of operation, making them the most advanced multi-sensors on the market. Within Riverside, they would be able to detect multiple elements of a fire individually or simultaneously, including combinations of smoke, fixed temperature, rate of rise of heat and CO. This could prove to be especially important for live performances where pyrotechnics are used, in which case the detectors would need to seamlessly switch between the smoke and heat modes. The ability to customise Hochiki Europe’s products was also an added bonus for both the installer and the end user. Belfast City Airport chooses Dräger’s new PSS AirBoss SCBA

The Emergency Fire and Rescue team at George Best Belfast City Airport has become the first in the UK to opt for Dräger’s newly-launched AirBoss self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), to provide its firefighters and emergency services teams with the most advanced fire safety protection. The 34-strong emergency service crew at Belfast City Airport is required by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to deploy and attend any fire safety incident in the airport or on the runway within three minutes of being alerted. Although a previous user of Dräger’s equipment, the decision to choose AirBoss followed a rigorous review of SCBA systems from different providers and is part of a multi-million pound investment in all aspects of the Airport’s fire safety response. Belfast City Airport has opted for the AirBoss Connect as this model provides the most advanced situational awareness. “We will benefit from Airboss Connect’s digital displays, and the new ‘Buddy Light’ feature – an innovative element allowing immediate and highly-visible signalling amongst our firefighters to alert them on aspects such as cylinder pressures and the physical condition of their colleagues. “The advanced modular design of AirBoss means we can build in additional functionality as and when required to ensure we stay at the forefront of fire and rescue response capabilities.” Seamus says that AirBoss’s easily adjustable backplate is a significant benefit: “Emergency Service teams have changed considerably during my career – minimum height requirements, for example, are a thing of the past – and so systems need to be easily borne by different physiques, both male and female. “Overall, the whole team agreed that the system is very appealing, especially its lightness and ‘snag-proof’ design. Lexipol Wins Globee Award for COVID-19 Response

Kentec’s Taktis fire panels protect landmark Cypriot University student accommodation

Award-winning Taktis fire panels, manufactured by Kentec Electronics, a manufacturer of life-critical control systems, are protecting students and property at the University of Nicosia (UNIC)’s new state-of-the-art student residences in Cyprus. The integrated fire system was installed by Kentec Installation Partner (KIP) Glosec Dragon, a Cyprus-based business specialising in the design, installation and maintenance of security, surveillance, hazard prevention and hospitality systems. The UNIC student residences have been designed to set a new standard in modern student living. They consist of two separate complexes, SIX and TRIANGLE, which provide a multitude of dining, relaxing and entertainment options including a cafe, mini-market, gym, TV rooms and games areas. Split between six, 12-storey distinctive towers, SIX comprises 307 luxury student residences, and is protected by two, highly-sophisticated Taktis eight-loop addressable fire panels. TRIANGLE complements SIX with an additional 147 modern and spacious rooms, with one six-loop Taktis panel installed. Across both SIX and TRIANGLE’s fire protection systems are 578 Apollo heat detectors, 530 sounder bases, 94 call points and 339 optical detectors. Three Taktis Vision Repeaters provide information on the status of the fire alarm system in key positions across the residences via large, full-colour, touch-screen graphical displays. Taktis provides an expandable solution, which includes a full suite of graphics, communications (copper and fibre), analytics and remote management tools. Multiple protocols can be supported on each panel to give installers and end-users maximum choice in their systems’ design, and the scalable nature of the product provides the highest level of futureproofing and networking capabilities. A 7” full-colour resistive touch screen display and a clear, uncluttered intuitive interface makes it easy to use even for those with minimal or no training, essential in the event of an emergency. Stathis Ierodiaconou, Managing Director of Glosec Dragon says the business has worked with Kentec for more than two decades and developed a trusting relationship: “Our experience with Kentec meant we knew Taktis was the right system for the project’s scope and needs. The project required that remote monitoring was possible from one control room to cover both SIX and TRIANGLE residences. It also needed to be an expandable system, which can grow as the development grows. With Glosec Dragon also installing and maintaining a suite of other CCTV, wireless access control, intercom, parking and energy-saving systems, Stathis says integration was essential: “Taktis is easy to install, integrates with other systems well and customer feedback has been good.” Anastasia Christodoulou, Manager, at UNIC Residences, says student safety is paramount: “We required complete assurance that our fire protection system is providing the utmost protection.
