Who’s Who – IWMA

The International Water Mist Association (IWMA) describes their evolution over 20+ years and discusses their annual conference and webinar offerings  The International Water Mist Association (IWMA) was founded on 15th April 1998. Then, the organisation had no office, no employees and did not initiate any events. However, there was a target and that was to bundle what was happening on an international level, to collect and spread knowledge and to communicate matters of common interest.    After some time of casual exchange of thoughts and ideas, IWMA held its first International Water Mist Conference in Vienna in 2001. Its aim was to introduce the technology as well as the organisation to the world of firefighting.   This conference is an annual event which has been held in cities like London, Paris, Prague, Copenhagen and Istanbul. In 2021, the only event solely dedicated to the water mist technology will be held in Warsaw, Poland, on 27th and 28th October.  Apart from the conferences, IWMA offers webinars on “water mist for data centres”, “water mist for the healthcare sector” or “water mist for heritage buildings”. These are of course just a few of many more applications.   The technology itself was invented more than a hundred years ago by F.E. Myers. But it was only after the adoption of the Montreal Protocol in the late 1980s and a devastating fire on a passenger ferry in 1990 that water mist as a means of fire protection took off. The two events paved the way and made clear that there was a need for alternatives in firefighting. And thus, water mist as a fire extinguishing agent was re-discovered which called for the establishment of an organisation.   Today, IWMA still is the only association dedicated exclusively to water mist firefighting. IWMA is based in Hamburg, Germany. From its office, close to the famous Jungfernstieg, it supports the continued development, research and applications engineering of generic water mist systems. Head of the office and general manager is Bettina McDowell, who has been working for the organisation since 2012. IWMA president is Are Wendelborg Brandt of RISE Norway.   Members of IWMA are, amongst others, manufacturers, distributors, insurance companies, scientific institutes etc. from countries like the USA, Egypt, but also from European countries like the UK, Denmark and Italy.   Since 1998 IWMA and its members are committed to the technology and its further development. They have seized opportunities, amongst those was a research project sponsored and organised by the IWMA on “Scaling of Fire Suppression Characteristics in Machinery Spaces” carried out on behalf of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). Nowadays IWMA holds a consultative status at the IMO.   Members of the three IWMA committees (the Board of Directors, the Scientific Council and the Marketing Group) act as representatives for the organisation in a number of expert and working groups as well as technical committees such as the CEN TC 191 / WG 10, NFPA 750 and 25, VdS 3188, IMO (International Maritime Organisation) and EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency of the European Commission).   IWMA donate the annual “IWMA Young Talent Award” for the author of the best master or Ph.D. thesis.    To stay up to date on the latest, trends, innovations, people news and company updates within the global fire market please register to receive our newsletter here. Each of these products can be customized to meet your system’s unique specifications.   Our Explosion Proof Actuator with supervision is specifically designed for use in hazardous gas environments, is UL HazLoc, ATEX, and IECEx certified, and accommodates systems with operating pressures up to 300 bar. The actuator acts as its own enclosure, and as a top-mounting linear actuator design, it does not act as a pressure vessel on the discharge valve. This means that the only potential leak point is within the top of the discharge valve at the discharge valve pin, ultimately providing a more reliable fire suppression system. The supervisory feature ensures fully-engaged installation detection by registering an audio and visual alarm at the fire alarm control panel whenever the actuator is removed from the fire suppression system. The alarm is only deactivated when the actuator is properly installed.   Our Liquid Level Sensor automatically provides a thermally compensated weight reading of the agent in the fire suppression system’s storage tanks. The weight reading can be displayed directly at the tank on a digital display or transmitted to the fire control panel via hardwired or wireless connection. Data can also be downloaded to a thumb drive through a USB port. Additionally, a simple GO/NO-GO status can be displayed with a green/red LED to indicate the status of the storage tank.   Our Event Recorder is an add-on device that is compatible with all TLX electric actuators. Pierce and Portland Fire and Rescue secure joint development agreement

Pierce Manufacturing, an Oshkosh Corporation company, announced it has entered into a joint development agreement with the City of Portland, Oregon Fire and Rescue to place a Pierce Volterra zero-emissions pumper into service with the city’s busiest station, Station No. 1 in Spring 2022. This agreement follows the recent introduction of the revolutionary Pierce Volterra platform of electric vehicles for the fire and emergency market and the placement of the first electric fire truck in service in North America with the City of Madison, Wisconsin Fire Department in June 2021. In 2019, Portland General Electric announced the launch of its Smart Grid Test Bed, a first-of-its kind project that integrates smart grid technology on a scale never before attempted in the US.  The project will accelerate the community’s vision for clean energy with new ways to decarbonize the grid. Oregon is one of seven US states to put energy storage procurement targets into place. Portland Fire and Rescue is led by Fire Chief Sara Boone and is made up of 31 fire stations which serve an area of 151 square miles and a population of over 650,000. Chief Boone considers the addition of Pierce’s Volterra electric pumper a significant contribution to the city’s sustainability efforts. “In 2016, the city achieved its 2030 Environmental Performance Objective for Fleet when 35% of fuel use came from renewable sources,” stated Chief Boone. “Fleet electrification is expected to be a primary driver of carbon emissions reduction from city vehicles, and exploring the role of the Pierce Volterra electric pumper within our fire apparatus fleet is a big step toward reaching our future goals.” In collaboration with the City of Portland Fire and Rescue, Pierce will continue the development and evaluation process for the Pierce Volterra electric vehicle. International Fire Buyer Editor catches up exclusively with Daniel Engelhardt, Product Manager LUKAS RESCUE, to find out all about their new e³ rescue equipment series, and how this new innovative equipment can benefit the industry. We also discover how the equipment is rigorously tested, and what is unique about this new series. What sets LUKAS apart from competitors? LUKAS was the first manufacturer of hydraulic rescue equipment in the world who managed to launch a battery-powered set consisting of a cutter, spreader, combi and ram in 2010. At that time, we were confident enough to take this development step and since then it was our goal, including initial setbacks, to convince customers of the superiority of battery technology. Thanks to this clear strategy, we have succeeded in convincing the global market of the superiority of battery-powered equipment, so that in recent years we have seen a large proportion of customers switch from conventional technology to battery technology. We have maintained this focus on battery technology over all these years and try to offer our customers a clear added value with each new generation of equipment and were thus able to defend our place at the top as the leading supplier of battery-powered rescue equipment. LUKAS founded the first hydraulic cutter; how do you maintain innovation in the marketplace? Most important, of course, are the insights we receive from the market. Through our sales team and our dealers, who are active in over 100 countries worldwide, we receive a lot of feedback on our current tools, which we then incorporate into the development of new generations of tools. In addition, we at LUKAS have flat hierarchies and short working channels. The cooperation between sales, product management, R&D and supply chain work extremely well, so that very little time passes from the introduction of the idea to its implementation. In addition, we have often been right with our trend forecasts in recent times. Battery technology is one example of how we recognized a trend very early on, and the saltwater resistance of our battery-powered devices is another. When we launched this on the market in 2019, many people perceived it as a superfluous feature. However, we were also able to see from the incredibly sad example of Germany this year that such terrible natural disasters caused by climate change will significantly increase in number and intensity in the coming years. We are also being asked about this topic much more frequently by customers around the world and are pleased to have recognised this trend very early. You recently released the e3 rescue equipment series, what makes these tools unique? ‘POWER under e³ CONTROL’. This is the claim of our new e³ Battery series. This claim is extremely appropriate, because it stands for everything that was important to us in the development of the tools. On the one hand, our e³ tools offer the POWER that our customers are already used to from our previous battery generations. On the other hand, our e³ tools are the first tools in the world that give the user direct feedback while working. They offer the user a level of CONTROL that has never been seen before in rescue equipment. We have achieved this through our DASHBOARD, which is mounted in the user’s field of vision and provides performance diagnostic information to the user during operation. The customer is informed at all times about how much remaining capacity the battery has, what power reserves the tool still has, whether the turbo is active or inactive, and in which direction the star grip is turned. This is made visible on the DASHBOARD by illuminated LEDs, which alert the customer to the situation of the tool by means of a visual signal in case of application. We are particularly proud of our newly developed roll warning. The lateral twisting of the shear in use beyond a limit point can cause the material being cut to press between the blades. Also, wrong or the unfavorable shape of the material to be material to be cut can also lead to the same result. This can lead to increased lateral force, overlap or, in rare cases, even breakage of the blades. If the cutter is twisted during the cutting process, which could blade breakage, the LED ring on the dashboard flashes LED ring on the dashboard flashes red and warning the user not to continue the cutting process. The user is alerted of any false start and an imminent situation and can take corrective action. Our tools are also the only ones in the world that are also used in salt water. For this purpose, we have developed a new saltwater battery that allows our tools to be used in 3m deep salt water for up to 60 minutes. With this world first, we have opened up another field of application and can now offer our customers a holistic solution that did not exist before. Our e³ tools are powered by our proven 5Ah and 9Ah batteries, the latter of which is the most powerful battery with the longest runtime of any rescue tool on the market. Perimeter Solutions describes their new line of fluorine-free, alcohol-resistant firefighting foam concentrates for Class B applications SOLBERG VERSAGARD, Perimeter Solutions’ newest line of fluorine-free firefighting foam, debuted this year with SOLBERG VERSAGARD AS-100. SOLBERG VERSAGARD AS-100 multipurpose 3×3 fluorine-free foam concentrate is an alcohol-resistant, state-of-the-art pseudoplastic foam technology designed for extinguishing and securing both Class B (hydrocarbon and polar solvent liquid fuel) and deep-seated Class A fires. This biodegradable and non-persistent concentrate is made with no siloxanes and is a combination of hydrocarbon surfactants and additives that delivers excellent foaming, vapor sealing, extinguishment and burnback properties using fresh, sea, or brackish water. Some fluorine-free foams are viscous and often show viscosity increase when in contact with water. SOLBERG VERSAGARD AS-100 creates very stable foams while keeping a similar viscosity to traditional AR-AFFF foams. This significantly improves storage, handling and long-term stability. Big Interview – John O’Sullivan

John O’Sullivan, Technical Director for Fire Safety Consultancy at Bureau Veritas, talks to Fire Buyer about fire safety compliance in a rapidly evolving arena.  Why is compliance necessary?  Not matter what role your business performs, as an employer, landlord, owner, occupier, or manager you have a legal duty to ensure fire safety within your business. As part of this, it is a legal requirement to have a written Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) in any business with five or more employees. Failure to have one in place can result in serious penalties, fines, or even imprisonment.  Not only is an FRA important in order for you to meet your legal requirements, but it is also vital in minimising the likelihood of a fire. Whilst accidents cannot always be avoided, by identifying potential hazards and risks – and addressing the issues – you will be doing all that is reasonably practicable to prevent them occurring.  At what stage of the construction process should fire safety and regulation be implemented?  Considering fire safety at the earliest possible point of planning a development is essential to ensure that fire risks are managed effectively in both the construction phase and after occupation.   This starts with the client appointing designers, a principal designer and principal contractor with the relevant skills, knowledge, experience, and organisational capabilities to fulfil their roles. They must set out how they expect the project to be managed, ensure the construction phase plan is in place, and includes project specific fire risks and the procedures in case of fire.   The Principal Designer is responsible for:   Considering the risk of fire when designing the construction project including choice of building materials and process of build, as well as off-site fire risk including impact on neighbouring properties and their emergency escape routes.   Providing risk mitigation measures for the construction phase.   Having a fire engineering strategy report that covers all aspects of the design and construction will apply, considering the recommendations of Approved Document B, (England and Wales) Building Standards (Scotland) and applicable British Standards and codes of practice.   It can also be the case that performance-based fire engineering design maybe used, by the use of other standards to achieve compliance when approved by the Building Control Authority.  Do you think the UK government’s ‘planning Gateway One’ will help tackle the war against cladding since the Grenfell tragedy?  Gateway One is only the beginning of the new Building Safety Bill, and applies to high rise multi-occupancy residential buildings, with floors over 18m in height. This includes student accommodation and hospitals as per relevant buildings for the combustible ban, as well as new building extensions and major refurbishments and existing relevant buildings.   Gateway One will introduce a number of new requirements into the planning system. This will ensure fire safety is prioritised and is incorporated at the planning stage for schemes involving a high-rise residential building.    It will involve Health & Safety Executive (HSE) becoming a statutory consultee before permission is granted for a development which involves or is likely to involve a high-rise residential building in certain circumstances. It also requires relevant applications for planning permission to include a fire statement to ensure applicants have considered fire safety issues, as they relate to land use planning matters (for instance layout and access).  Finally, it will help inform effective decision-making on local planning, as the Bill is currently going through Parliament, thus it is possible before it gains Royal Ascent that some significant changes may be made to the Act.  How are fire risk assessments becoming increasingly complicated, and how can Bureau Veritas help organisations?  The recent Fire Safety Act 2021 has introduced some significant changes that places an immediate requirement for additional life safety issues in relation to the external building structure (cladding and balconies) to be referenced in fire risk assessments.   Bureau Veritas is a world leading, professional services company. It comprises of a group of competent qualified fire risk assessment personnel to ensure it provides a consistent quality report to clients.  Has Covid-19 changed the way in which fire safety assessments are conducted in non-domestic buildings?  We have continued to offer a full fire risk assessment service to our clients throughout the pandemic in both residential and non-residential buildings.  The pandemic has not been without its challenges though, and there have been subtle changes to the way that we work.  Gaining access to our clients’ sites has been more complex and varied, with much more for our schedulers and assessors to keep track of ahead of visits particularly in relation to PCR and / or lateral flow testing ahead of visits to some sites.  There has been some shift in the balance of work carried out on site and remotely.  Our assessors are much more likely to spend time scrutinising compliance data at home rather than while on site.  The way that fire risk assessments are carried out on site has not altered – our assessors still need to talk to the same stakeholders during their assessment. The nature of the way this communication happens has changed though, with assessors typically meeting with much smaller groups, and with some of this communication also moving into remote and off-site settings.  Though some of the site/office balance has altered, we have been able to attend our customers sites throughout the pandemic and believe strongly that the physical examination of site is and always will be an essential component of fire risk assessment.  What would your top tips be for companies trying to adhere to best practice and compliance?  Threats to organisations can come in various forms and at any time. Management involves undertaking the appropriate actions in the relatively rare instance when risk management – encompassing prevention, protection and preparation – is not sufficient to cater for the identified threat. In effect the management plan should provide the glue to ensure survivability.   Prevention: identification of the potential root causes of the threat and taking steps to remove the identified risks at the source, such as the probability of an occurrence is reduced. Protection: by using processes or systems to minimise the impact of the identified risks. Preparation: response and recovery by taking management and control the actions prior
