Ukraine’s indominable rise from the ashes

In the face of overwhelming pressure put on Ukrainian fire and rescue teams during a national conflict, the rest of the world steps in to offer their support  It is now approaching half a year where the headlines have been filled with news about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. It’s not an understatement to say the lives of its denizens have been turned upside down by the constant threat of destruction to their homes and municipal facilities. The toll the war has exacted is heavy, with entire neighbourhoods levelled by bombs and artillery, Ukrainian soldiers deployed across the country to aid in defence of the invasion, as well as countless lives needlessly lost.   But it is not only military forces that are spread thin in their efforts to protect the population: fire and rescue services are struggling to keep up with a level of responses on a nationwide scale, as every corner of country comes under threat of bombs and fire. Ukraine were already ill-equipped before the war even started, which has them scrambling to use what they can to save the populace. Outdated, archaic and rudimentary equipment are all these firefighters have to deal with the largest catastrophe in their nation’s recent history. Every citizen they save is a Pyrrhic victory, as many others lose their lives due to lack of staff, training or advanced equipment. As the war rages on, so do these resources diminish.   But Ukraine’s cries for help haven’t been lost in the howling winds. Nations across the world have been united in showing solidarity for them and offering aid in whatever way they can. Huge convoys of donated PPE, fire engines, thermal imaging equipment, generators, hoses, lighting and rescue equipment have already made their way across Ukrainian borders to assist firefighters in their efforts to save the population. Brave organisations have made the journey into the country to offer invaluable training and volunteering for those on the front line, as well as developing online training courses that can be readily accessed by Ukrainian firefighters across the country. We’ll take a closer look at just how dire the situation in the country is, as well as the methods employed by outside benefactors to aid fire and rescue efforts.  Even before Russia invaded Ukraine, the fire departments there were ill-equipped to deal with such a widespread scale of reports. How well a country is able to deal with a sudden and unexpected threat such as this hinges entirely on the surplus of equipment, facilities and staff available prior to the attack: for every one of this criterium, Ukraine was found overwhelmingly lacking. And with the conflict, these numbers have only diminished further – as of April this year, 26 Ukrainian rescue workers have been killed, six captured and 50 have been injured as a direct result of the war, with over 400 life support equipment, 1000 educational institutions, 285 healthcare facilities and 71000 homes destroyed.   Money cannot be injected into fire and rescue services, either – Ukraine is already a poor country, this issue exacerbated by the annexation of the country as well as funds already being allocated to military and evacuation efforts.   To read more exclusive features and latest news please see our June issue here. PPE: Protective Wizardry

PPE is an absolute necessity in ensuring the protection and safety of our emergency services, but how do they work? What kinds of PPE do firefighters have at their disposal, and how are they made? With firefighting services in every corner of the globe, there comes with it a varied approach to ensuring fire safety; different cultures, environments and infrastructure all play their part in protecting their societies and ecosystems, which may differ from the techniques and equipment implemented in a different fire department in a different corner of the world. Of all these variables though there remains one constant: the need for Personal Protective Equipment. This encompasses a lot of protective gear that firefighters wear, from the helmets atop their heads to the boots on their feet.  The turn of the 20th Century brought with it polymer production and with it came the most innovative development of PPE that the trade has ever seen. The creation of synthetic fibres like Nomex and Kevlar offered a level of protection against fire and hazards the likes of which had never seen before with natural materials, such as cotton or wool, and while these still see fringe use today, it is synthetic clothing that spearheads the industry when it comes to protecting firefighters and rescue services alike.  PPE, or Personal Protection Equipment, is an all-encompassing umbrella term for a variety of worn equipment utilised by emergency services around the world. This equipment can vary greatly between different regions, where emergency situations warrant a different kind of protection: for example, different PPE would be used in an underwater rescue mission as opposed to, say, a forest fire. But each member of the PPE family is bound by one common purpose – the protection of the user. Some of these types of protection include:  Helmets and Headgear  For firefighters and rescue teams, head protection is absolutely paramount in perilous situations – after all, the most important piece of equipment these teams utilise is inside their heads. Helmets, like any other of its ilk in a specialised field, from soldiers to racing drivers, protect the top and sides of the head of impact trauma. For firefighters in particular, this ensures protection from falling debris and impact injuries. Most firefighting helmets also come equipped with a mounted headlamp to enable visibility in low-light areas, such as rooms saturated with smoke.  Firefighting equipment regulations also state that helmets must come equipped with a face shield or equivalent goggles for eye protection. Should neither of these be available, some supplementary sufficient eye protection must be worn in order to deem a worker fit for service. Eye protection ensures smoke, ashes and stray embers do not irritate or damage firefighter’s sight while operating in hazardous environments. They also protect the eyes from chemical irritants and carcinogens that may be in the air as a result of a fire.  Of all the pieces of equipment, SCBA, or Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, is the most important piece of equipment for fire and rescue services. This is the single piece of PPE that they don first, if a choice has to be made. SCBA is composed of a breathing mask and accompanying oxygen tank to ensure toxic and choking fumes are not inhaled during rescue. They also serve as a lifeline in environments which contain little to no air, such as in the midst of a burning building. Not only is smoke inhalation an immediate risk to firefighters, but the long-term risks, such as cancer or breathing troubles are to be considered.  To read more exclusive features and latest news please see our June issue here. Fire suppression systems are joining the trend of smart technology and innovations in the industry, so what does the future look like for this sector?  A fire suppression system is designed to extinguish, contain and prevent fires. The fire prevention system can be easily managed, ensuring that fire ignition or re-ignition is prevented, helping to preserve and protect the environment.  Fire suppression systems can be installed in a range of building types. There are many variables that need to be taken into account before choosing the right fire suppression system for a property. Finding one depends upon factors such as, the nature of the risk to be protected, the location of the risk, the space available for the storage of fire suppression cylinders, as well as consideration of the environment and of course the financial cost.  The future is smart  Smart technology is finding its applications in every avenue. By employing smart technology, any electronic device can collect data and communicate with other similar connected devices or systems when connected to the internet. A smart device typically has an operating system that will connect with other information services or apps. As fire safety is integral for industries, residential, school and commercial, investing in fire protection systems can earn significant benefits for businesses and is a necessity. Existing fire protection systems include fire suppression systems, smoke detectors and sprinkler systems assisting fire detection and protection.   The need to sweep away the ineffective practices for inspecting, testing and maintaining fire protection equipment is growing with the emergence of smart technologies. By incorporating smart devices, the fire protection system can monitor the temperature and immediately send an alert for the facility manager. The system is more accurate and reliable. Smart devices drastically reduce the workload of inspectors of fire and life safety building systems enabling them to monitor remotely from a laptop in more than two job sites simultaneously.   Sensors are the most potent and pervasive components installed in buildings that provide opportunities for smart fire fighting. These sensors can track both the environmental condition and the occupants status. Similarly, these sensors in conjunction with firefighters personal protective equipment, as well as in equipment and apparatus, detect and characterise exposure hazards while monitoring the firefighter and civilian hydration and other health parameters to minimise associated risk.  Smart fire protection systems can be created using cyber-physical technologies that require collecting vast quantities of data, processing, analysing and predicting utilising that information, allowing fire departments and building managers to make appropriate decisions when entering a fire risk environment.   Depending on the business needs and considering the facility requirements, choose the appropriate fire protection system. Thus, when selecting and installing a system, hire a provider with a brief understanding of the organisation’s needs to customise the fire protection options.   All fire protection systems have a common goal, to detect fire and protect occupants and save lives. The integration of smart technology to fire and life safety building systems will present many benefits with minimal risk. The system is activated when smoke is detected, causing the sprinkler system to operate. The water prevents the spread of fire. Although it is an effective method, automatic fire suppression systems employing clean agents can be a preferred choice as they leave no residue. Some types of fire protection systems enable the automatic dispatching of emergency services that in turn will immediately suppress the fire while notifying the authorities to send emergency professionals to specific locations. Quick Fire – Fiona Perrin

Fiona Perrin, Innovative Safety Leader and Fire Engineer, Royal Academy of Arts What does ‘fire protection’ mean to you?  Fire protection is first and foremost about life safety.  This could include both passive (e.g. fire stopping and fire doors) and active fire protection measures (e.g. fire alarms) and even take into consideration how humans behave in a fire scenario (i.e. human factors).  I currently work in a heritage building.  So, fire protection to me also includes property protection and ensuring we protect our beautiful building and its history for future generations to enjoy. What made you want to work in the industry?  I kind of fell into fire (thankfully not literally).  I have worked in health and safety for about 20 years.  I saw fire safety as something a lot of safety professionals dabbled in but never excelled at.  So, I wanted to change that and started to expand my knowledge and confidence in all things safety – from large scale events, pyrotechnics and fire engineering. If you could talk to your younger self, what would you say?  Worry less, embrace those challenges and learn from your mistakes. ZIEGLER delivers 3 SLF for Dutch Railway

The Safety Region Zuid-Holland Zuid (VRZHZ) and ProRail receive three industrial firetrucks for Kijfhoek railway zone and rail zone Dordrecht. Ziegler Brandweertechniek will build the three industrial firetrucks. This means, an important step is taken in further improving the security at the yard Kijfhoek in Zwijndrecht. The safety region Zuid-Holland-Zuid (VRZHZ), ProRail and the municipalities of Zwijndrecht and Dordrecht are continuously working together to further improve the security and to combat incidents along the rail zone between Zwijndrecht and Dordrecht. At the beginning of June, the contract was signed by VRZHZ, ProRail, the municipality of Zwijndrecht and Ziegler Brandweertechniek B.V.. On July 7th, this joyful moment was commemorated. Mayor Hein van der Loo of the municipality of Zwijndrecht says: ”The purchase of these industrial firetrucks is one of the measures to make the Spoorzone and Kijfhoek even safer. These vehicles allow the fire brigade to fight an incident safely and quickly. That is in the interest of all of us. It is now up to our partner ZIEGLER to deliver the fire trucks on time.” Incident response on and along the railway The industrial firetrucks are used to combat incidents on and along the railway. For this reason, the VRZHZ and ProRail work closely together. Based on this collaboration, a market survey was conducted for the order for the three identical industrial firetrucks. The collaboration between the VRZHZ and ProRail is extremely important since the work will be done by interchangeable vehicles. The requests of the fire department are included, as well as the operational principles. The tender was awarded to Ziegler Brandweertechniek B.V.. Industrial firefighting vehicles The industrial firetrucks have a special extinguishing arm. In this way, the fire brigade will be able to reach more difficult places easier during an incident. The new industrial firetrucks are faster, more manoeuvrable, more economical and are prepared for the use of more sustainable (fluorine-free) types of extinguishing foam. The industrial firetrucks, which are thoroughly tested and have more extinguishing capacity, are intended for both the yard Kijfhoek and the rail zone in Dordrecht and Zwijndrecht. This means that there are always two vehicles available for both areas, even if one of the three is out of service, for example due to maintenance. The industrial firetrucks are completely engineered and manufactured in the Netherlands by ZIEGLER in Winschoten. The production process takes approximately 12 months. After the production, there an extensive quality check and practical tests will follow. The entire process takes about 24 months to delivery. The vehicles are maintained for 15 years by the service department of Ziegler Brandweertechniek B.V.. Advanced Dynamic Safety Signage

Fire and life safety systems manufacturer, Advanced, has extended its emergency lighting range with Dynamic Safety Signage (DSS) – proven to make building evacuations faster and safer. In emergency situations, lack of information and confusion mean people often make poor decisions. DSS uses green moving and pulsing LED arrows to clearly indicate safe exits and red LED crosses to boldly show no-go areas. This distinctive indication supports effective escape and avoids congestion at exits. DSS is ideal for settings where large numbers of people may be unfamiliar with emergency escape routes, e.g. university campuses, hospitals, stadiums and transport hubs. The new range of signage provides different tiers of functionality making it very versatile in meeting requirements across a wide range of sites and scenarios. The lighting can be used standalone or integrated with conventional/addressable fire alarm panels to trigger emergency lighting if an incident occurs. Cause and effect can be programmed, allowing DSS to be used adaptively. This ensures that as evacuation situations evolve, only the safest escape routes are highlighted whilst unviable exits are clearly marked as no-go areas. For added safety, DSS is also compatible with Advanced’s LuxIntelligent emergency lighting test system, making it easy to prove compliance and identify any parts of the system requiring attention. Matthew Jones, Emergency Lighting Business Manager at Advanced, said: “Research shows that people rarely notice passive escape signage during an evacuation, preferring to follow familiar routes which are often not the safest or fastest. Advanced’s range of dynamic safety signage has been developed on the back of research into human behaviour during fire incidents. By directing building occupants to the closest, safest exits in emergencies, DSS measurably reduces evacuation time, congestion and the threat to life.” A study, conducted by the University of Greenwich, revealed that during a simulated emergency in an unfamiliar built environment, only 38% of people noticed conventional static emergency signage. When it was replaced with dynamic signage, 77% of people noticed it and 100% of the test group went on to follow the safe exit route. Dynamic safety signage hardware consists of recessed, IP65 wall-mounted and wall/ceiling-mounted escape signs that are easy to install, can be retrofitted onto existing systems and provide a fully auto-tested system when used with LuxIntelligent, ensuring compliance with BS5266-1. DSS can be triggered manually via a key switch, or automatically by integrating with any existing fire system using simple input/output modules. Advanced offers a complete range of emergency lighting solutions, including LuxIntelligent, the automatic, addressable, emergency lighting test system, that shows all emergency lights are compliant and functioning, with no engineer involvement required. Each panel can automatically test and monitor nearly 1,000 luminaires and is easily networked using existing wiring and lights, keeping installation costs to a minimum. Mobile Tech Doubles Business for ComLink Fire

The latest field service management software has helped ComLink Fire and Security to become one of the fastest growing companies in Wales.  By equipping engineers with rugged mobile devices that synchronise in real time with back-office software, ComLink’s business has been transformed with completely paperless working. Since introducing the cloud-based technology from BigChange, ComLink has seen its field service fleet double in size. The company has also seen turnover triple without the need for additional office resources. Based in Carmarthen, ComLink services mainly commercial customers within a one-hour catchment area in south and west Wales. Formed in 2017, the company specialises in the installation and service of fire alarms, security systems, HD CCTV and automatic gates. ComLink became the 22nd fastest growing company in Wales in 2021; a year earlier the company won the small business category at the West Wales Business Awards. We’ve doubled jobs per day without needing to increase office administrative resource.     ComLink likes the fleet management capabilities offered via the BigChange app. The integrated telematics provides live ETA and an audit of arrival and departure time all linked to the particular job card. The app is also used for recording van inspections and with digital updates on defects and other issues, the system has improved fleet maintenance. An international competition, the British Firefighter Challenge is an annual sporting event that pushes firefighters to their limits while also raising money for the Fire Fighters Charity. London fires worst since World War 2

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced that yesterday’s heatwave across Britain resulted in the London Fire Brigade’s busiest day since World War Two. Major incidents were recorded in 15 areas around the UK in the midst of a heatwave that broke the record for the highest temperature recorded in the country: a sweltering 40.3 degrees Celsius in Coningsby, Lincolnshire. The volatile weather hasn’t ceased as temperatures drop, though – a yellow warning for thunderstorms and heavy showers has been issued by the Met Office which could bring further disruptions in the south of England. The ongoing heat also continues to cause disruption to transport lines. Network Rail have stated today that there were no direct trains running between London and Scotland as a result of damaged overhead lines on the West Coast mainline. Situations were dire yesterday for the London Fire Brigade, according to Sadiq Khan. There were over 2600 calls in just one day, exceeding the average over 300-500 calls. In Wenningt0n, a village on the outskirts of east London, over 100 firefighters were called to a blaze that destroyed several homes. In a report, LFB said that two rows of terraced houses, four other homes, 12 stables and five cars were consumed by the fire, with one firefighter at the scene describing the scene as “absolute hell”. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Mr Khan said that more than a dozen fires raged on simultaneously during the day. “Yesterday was the busiest day for the fire service in London since the Second World War,” he said. “Normally we get 350 calls a day, on a busy day we can get up to 500 calls. Yesterday, the fire service had more than 2600 calls a day.” He also advised locals against having barbecues in parks or private gardens due to the increased risk of fire spreading to dry grass. “The grass is like hay, which means its easier to catch fire and once it catches fire it spreads incredibly fast, like wildfires like you see in movies or like you see in California.” To read more exclusive features and latest news please see our June issue here. New ISO Toolkit to improve quality standards

A Hampshire standards consultancy has launched a new toolkit to help fire and security alarm firms throughout the UK to maintain the highest levels of quality. The online toolkit has been produced by Hampshire-based Hantec Systems to help existing clients and new businesses hit Government approved thresholds for quality, health and safety and environmental management. Hantec compliance consultant Hannah Wallis said: “We know how frequently quality, information security, environmental and health and safety management requirements change for the fire alarm and security alarm sector. “This toolkit is maintained and updated regularly so users need never worry that they are missing out on the latest changes in the standards they are required to maintain to keep their ISO certification and industry approvals. “Complying with regulations is critical for businesses to protect its most valuable assets, staff and to run an efficient business. “The suite of documents is fully editable, and businesses can achieve industry approval without any external assistance once they have paid the one-off fee. “As part of the launch we have offered a 40% discount for purchases made during July and August.” Hannah added that fire and security alarm businesses could face severe consequences if they failed to comply with the ISO industry standards and regulations, including being struck off from police-approved lists.
