Drager launches BG ProAir

Drager, an international leader in the fields of medical and safety technology, has launched the Drager BG ProAir, a closed-circuit breathing apparatus with innovative features to protect firefighters attending long-duration deployments such as those in tall buildings, complex structures, basements and tunnels.  The BG ProAir’s positive pressure breathing closed circuit prevents toxic substances from entering the breathing system. Both inhalation and exhalation are optimised by cooling and enriching the air with oxygen before inhaling, and CO2 being absorbed when exhaling. An even distribution of the breathing apparatus’ weight enhances comfort and ergonomics, especially important during extended missions.  Oxygen is supplied according to the wearer’s personal workload, allowing more than 4 hours duration at low breathing rates, and the new cooling concept also makes breathing easier and more natural. This allows the firefighter to manage the incident at a lower work rate.  It is further enhanced by smart onboard electronics, which include a low-pressure sensor. The integrated low pressure sensor warns when there is a lack of oxygen to ensure safe breathing. The sensor also provides a low pressure leak test of the breathing system.  The BG ProAir’s housing features highly visible reflectors and a buddy light system that alerts other firefighters to their team members’ vital information, such as cylinder pressure, and operating time.  With a high contrast, full-colour display, user data is plainly visible even in the most difficult environments such as darkness, bright sunlight or smoke. An integrated Bluetooth module provides a short range connection to work with external devices such as gas detectors as well as a PC connection to download data and perform configuration.  The BG ProAir’s integrated data telemetry and RFID assists the user in multiple scenarios such as entry control management and absorber status tracking. In addition to time calculations such as time to whistle, Drager have also integrated recognised features like PASS, ADSU and temperature readings.  With a fully sealed housing, the BG ProAir has been approved to the highest standards for heat, flame, and chemical resistance. For additional safety, it also comes with an optional buddy system, which enables the user to safely share oxygen with those in need during rescue situations.  The new apparatus is easy to assemble, disassemble and clean – vital for Fire Services that are now further prioritising thorough and consistent cleaning processes to deal with contaminants.  Liz Millward, Marketing Manager at Drager Safety UK, says the BG ProAir is the culmination of proven manufacturing and design experience: “Drager’s BG ProAir is evidence of our commitment to continual improvement. FireQual announce addition to Senior Management

Steve Skarratt, in their new position as Qualifications Manager, joins the organisation from his former role as Head of Prevention and Protection Training at The Fire Service College. Throughout his career, Steve has been heavily involved in training and development including acting as Interim Head of Learning and Development at the College, and prior to that, Curriculum and Qualifications Manager at the Fire Protection Association. FireQual, which offers nationally regulated qualifications for multiple areas of fire safety, is heavily invested in adding to the existing suite of qualifications available. The addition of Steve Skarratt will aid in accelerating this expansion and will continue the excellent developments made since FireQual’s establishment in September 2020. Teledyne to exhibit at ONS 2022

Two world leaders in gas detection and monitoring technologies for the offshore industry will present their latest innovations from a shared booth at ONS (Offshore Northern Seas) 2022 in Stavanger, Norway. Taking place from 29 August to 1 September, Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection (Teledyne GFD) and Teledyne FLIR will be helping exhibition visitors to learn more about their solutions for the oil and gas market in hall 10, booth 1063. One of the largest events of its kind, ONS 2022 will host more than 65,000 visitors from around 100 countries. With over 20,000 square metres of exhibition space across nine halls, there will be plenty to see, especially for any companies seeking reliable, high-quality, proven gas detection and monitoring technologies. Both Teledyne GFD and Teledyne FLIR will showcase a number of proven products that enhance safety and bring even more capabilities to the oil and gas sector.  Among the class-leading products on display from Teledyne GFD will be the GD1 hydrogen sulphide (H2S) laser detector. At the heart of this innovative device is a tuneable laser diode that eliminates environmental effects from sun, rain and fog. The fast and fail-safe laser needs no recalibration and can replace multiple standard detectors to cover the same risk. Well over 800 units have been deployed in the field since 2011. Also in the spotlight will be the GD10P infrared gas detector with full firmware upgrade, enhancing the product’s performance in high demand mode SIL2 approved applications. In comparison with other infrared gas detectors, the new firmware adds further to GD10P’s differentiating factors, which include a solid-state infrared source and a 15-year warranty. Elsewhere on the booth, ONS visitors will find the GD10PE infrared point gas detector, which is ideal when users need fast, reliable detection of low gas concentrations. With a measuring range of 0-20% LEL, the GD10PE is five times more sensitive than standard point detectors.  In terms of new innovations, the big announcement from Teledyne GFD at ONS 2022 will be the unveiling of a touch-panel controller for large sites seeking hassle-free gas detection that is simple to install and operate. 1/3 A further feature is an improved events datalogger with full IIoT compatibility.  Another exciting innovation launching at the show is Spyglass, a brand new range of flame detectors offering integrated high-definition CCTV video that facilitates the clear, rapid imaging of fire and people at unprecedented distances. When connected to a DVR/NVR, the rescue team becomes aware of the exact situation before entering the hazardous area. A range of high-capability models is available offering a selection of different detectors. Visitors should head for the booth to find out more.  Sister company Teledyne FLIR will present a number of complementary products at the exhibition, including the ground-breaking GFx320 OGI (optical gas imaging) camera for visualising fugitive hydrocarbon leaks at natural gas well sites, offshore platforms and liquid natural gas terminals. The safe way to ‘see’ methane leaks, the GFx320’s certifications allow surveyors to work confidently while maintaining safety. Visitors to the exhibition can also discover the QL320 optical gas imaging system that allows surveyors to measure the leak rates of methane. This capability eliminates the need for secondary sampling with a toxic vapour analyser or similar tool. Hochiki Europe appoints new Commercial Director

Hochiki will be making significant new investments in their people to support the Middle East, Africa, and European regions in order to develop the expertise they can bring to their customers in 2022 and beyond Accomplished Mr Shinsuke Kubo, Hochiki’s Managing Director for the Middle East operation based out of Dubai, has been recognised by both customers and the business’ internal teams as a shining light when it comes to customer experience. With his extensive knowledge of both the Hochiki product and the fire industry, he will now take up the role of Commercial Director for Hochiki Europe, Middle East, Africa, and India. This new role will be based out of the UK head office in Gillingham, Kent, with regular visits to the Middle East, where Kubo will continue to play a key role in the strategic development of this region and remain as a board Director. Using his vast experience of the market, in this new role, Kubo will be focused on leading the product management team to develop the company’s road map to ensure it meets the needs of customers. With a desire for an efficient operation, he has already set up his key team with David Brown as Product Manager and Robert Head as Commercial Product Manager, who between them bring over 40 years’ experience of working with Hochiki and within fire safety. A crucial element to this new role and indeed the team will be the close working partnership between them and the teams in Japan and of course the Research and Development arm of the business. The constant feedback between customers, Japan and R&D teams will enable Kubo to realise his ambition to take Hochiki to the next level for its customers. “I have enjoyed a fantastic career with Hochiki for the last 28 years (Japan 17 years, US 7 years and Dubai 4 years) and have gained experience of the industry and our customers across the globe, so I am excited to start here in the UK. London Fire Brigade Selects MSA Safety

MSA Safety Incorporated today announced it has been awarded a $9 million contract from the London Fire Brigade to supply firefighters with MSA’s new M1 Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and telemetry technology.  The contract was formally awarded in early July, with equipment deliveries expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year.  Today’s announcement also represents the beginning of a multi-phase SCBA training and deployment process involving the Brigade’s more than 4,500 firefighters. The decision to upgrade London’s SCBA technology was made after an extensive and comprehensive evaluation process.  “The M1 SCBA represents the most advanced, ergonomic and modular SCBA that MSA has ever introduced to the European and International markets,” said Nish Vartanian, MSA Chairman, President and CEO.  “We are incredibly proud to establish this new partnership with one of the oldest and most respected fire brigades in the world.  Most importantly, we’re honoured that the London Fire Brigade has entrusted MSA with the responsibility of protecting the men and women who keep the residents of London safe each day.” London Fire Brigade Deputy Commissioner Richard Mills said “following a competitive tender process, we’re really looking forward to developing our exciting partnership with MSA. The new state-of-the-art breathing apparatus equipment will be lighter and easier to carry and provide enhanced safety for our firefighters. The improved equipment shows how we are transforming as a fire service and investing in the latest technology to help protect London and Londoners.” The groundbreaking design of the MSA M1 SCBA was a key factor in London’s selection of the new SCBA platform.  The breathing apparatus includes several patented and customizable features that help to enhance ergonomics and improve firefighter comfort and hygiene. These include the industry’s lightest-weight backplate with a unique one-handed height adjustment; an advanced hip belt that evenly distributes the weight of the SCBA; and a padded harness that is fully water-repellent, making the entire SCBA system machine washable without disassembly. Other features that factored into the Brigade’s selection of the M1 SCBA include a high-pressure cylinder connection for fast cylinder exchanges; compatibility with MSA’s industry-leading G1 facepiece; and integration with FireGrid, which gives incident commanders the ability to evaluate and manage multiple situations in real time and from any location.  MSA’s Entry Control Board (ECB), designed specifically to meet the unique needs of the UK fire service, also played a key part in the Brigade’s decision to choose the MSA brand.  Serving as a cloud-connected fire-ground management tool that provides Incident Commanders with air and alarm status of all telemetry-enabled breathing apparatus on scene, MSA’s ECB is also capable of providing post-incident reporting and automated documentation. As part of the contract, MSA will also provide London with a new communications system that provides enhanced voice communications.  Called the C1 Headset, the device attaches easily to the outside of the SCBA facepiece. SERVPRO Golf Tournament Raises $25,000

For the first time since its inception in 1990, the SERVPRO Annual Convention Golf Tournament raised funds to benefit a nonprofit, raising $25,000 for brand partner First Responder Children’s Foundation (FRCF). More than 110 golfers from across the SERVPRO franchise system participated in the event at the Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine, Texas. The tournament preceded the 53rd SERVPRO Annual Convention, the one time each year entrepreneurs from the 2,000-plus franchise system come together to train, collaborate, and re-energize with fellow owners and members of the SERVPRO family. “Each year, the Convention Golf Tournament is a great way to kick off the week by reconnecting and fellowshipping with members of the SERVPRO system,” said SERVPRO CEO Rick Isaacson. “Add in the competition, the camaraderie, and the fact that it was all for a great cause, and this year’s tournament was one of the best yet.” In addition to funds raised from tournament registration, players had several opportunities to donate to FRCF on the course to improve their team’s score. Golfers could purchase “Like it never even happened” mulligans, “buy up drives” to tee off closer to the green, or they could “cheat for charity” on the course’s longest par 5, subtracting strokes from their score up to a hole-in-one. “Since partnering with First Responders Children’s Foundation, we have seen the great work they do for first responder families and their communities. We are committed to doing anything we can to help their mission and support their goals.” In 2021, SERVPRO made an initial $100,000 contribution to FRCF which it used to provide scholarships to children of first responders who were killed in the line of duty and to provide holiday toys at several “Toy Express” events across the country. Two scholarship recipients, Annie Rule and Avyn McDuffie, joined the players on the course. Annie spoke before the event to share how important the scholarships have been to their lives since losing her father, Deputy Constable Caleb Rule, in May 2020. “Being a part of the First Responders Children’s Foundation since 2021 has been incredible beyond belief,” Rule said. “It has given me the opportunity to talk about my dad as well as my educational endeavours – something I would have never been able to do without this scholarship opportunity. “I was able to speak with individuals about their businesses and accomplishments while gaining life advice from them. Big Bear Fire orders Pierce Apparatus

Pierce Manufacturing Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation company, announced the Big Bear, California Fire Department has placed an order for three custom Pierce fire apparatus, including two Pierce Arrow XT™ 4×4 pumpers and an Ascendant® 100’ Heavy-Duty Aerial Tower with mid-mount configuration. The new fire apparatus purchase is part of a fleet upgrade and replacement initiative for the Big Bear Fire Department and was coordinated through authorised Pierce dealer, South Coast Fire Equipment, Inc.  “Due to economic challenges and a consolidation nearly 15 years ago, fire apparatus replacements were on hold, making upgrade and replacement initiatives a major priority in recent years,” said Big Bear Fire Department Captain Norman Dykesten. “As we began the bid process, we appreciated South Coast Fire Equipment’s responsiveness and efforts to introduce configurations we didn’t know existed. The value and quality construction we received from Pierce within our available resources were immense, and we are confident the new fire apparatus will be exactly what we need to continue serving our community.”  The Big Bear Fire Department operates out of four fire stations with 58 personnel and responds to over 4,500 calls per year. The service area is a unique mix of rural, mountainous, and urban neighbourhoods. The jurisdiction includes two resorts offering skiing and snowboarding in the winter, as well as mountain bike trails and golfing in the spring, summer, and fall seasons. The population for this resort community can fluctuate from approximately 17,800 full time residents to upwards of 250,000 on any given day or holiday weekend, depending on tourist activity. This creates an ever-evolving basis of fire suppression and ambulance needs, for which the Big Bear Fire Department must always be prepared.  Captain Dykesten added, “Although San Bernardino County Fire is able to provide immediate assistance should mutual aid become necessary, one of the biggest challenges Big Bear Fire Department faces is significant additional resources are farther away. The next closest community is 25 miles from us. The commute on mountain highways makes accessibility to critical equipment particularly important for our crew.”  The fire apparatus order is the first the Big Bear Fire Department has placed with South Coast Fire Equipment. Multiple fires rage across the UK

With recent temperatures in the UK soaring to unprecedented heights, a nationwide advisory has been issued by fire departments in all corners of the country, strongly urging citizens to exercise care when it comes to outside barbecues and exposed flames. Just yesterday (Sunday 24 July) saw numerous severe fires erupt in the south of the country as temperatures saw heights of 30 degrees Celsius, straining the efforts of fire services that are still reeling from the aftermath of the heatwave that struck the country last week. Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service were tasked with tackling several field fires on the north-east outskirts of London Luton Airport, including one in the Tea Green and Wigmore area. A spokesperson for the airport stated that, “there was no impact at all” on flights or routine operations caused by the surrounding fires. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue also reported tackling large crop fires in its respective area. There were also two notable serious fire cases in Suffolk: one in Brandon and another in Leiston. Eight fire crews from two different counties were summoned to a forest fire that broke out in the early hours of Monday morning, in the London Road area. A spokesperson for the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said that despite the fire still being alight at the time of the statement, even after the crews utilised hose reel jets and beaters, “good progress is being made.” Thankfully, there were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire was not known at the time. A few hours after local fire crews dealt with serious fires in the London and Surrey areas, another huge blaze emerged in Knodishall Common in Suffolk. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the usage of 12 pumps to tackle the wildfire after the call was made just before 8pm on Sunday night. Local residents were advised to steer clear of the surrounding areas and keep windows and doors closed to avoid the choking black smoke being blown towards Leiston and the surrounding areas.
