Magirus launches ‘Experience The Future’

Magirus will be launching its innovative roadshow across Europe from September on. Under the motto “Experience The Future”, firefighters and interested trade visitors will have the opportunity to experience a cross-section of the highly innovative product portfolio. In the months to follow, the roadshow will be coming to events in four countries. INTERSCHUTZ 2022: Worth the wait

The biggest fire trade show for seven years finally makes its return after much anticipation… and exceeds every expectation  After seemingly endless delays and headaches related to the ongoing Covid nightmare, Interschutz 2022, held in Hannover, finally made landfall last month and boy, was it a doozy! The time away only made the fire industry’s hearts fonder as we all anticipated its return and return it did, in a big way. The long interval between the last show ensured every exhibitor was able to showcase their newest innovative products and services in an industry that has evolved substantially in the last seven years. It was a jam-packed week of non-stop action, with the Fire Buyer team at action stations to make sure we made the best of it all.   “Against a backdrop of increasing threat scenarios, it was high time after seven years for an INTERSCHUTZ to take place again in a physical, on-site format,” reported Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Deutsche Messe Managing Board. “This trade fair was all about networking, developing ideas, discussing solutions and expanding international networks. As a result, INTERSCHUTZ is now more than just a product show – it is a shaper of sustainable security architecture on a national and global scale,” he continued.  Interschutz was not just a place for returning companies, though. Debutants like Fotokite also were given the spotlight to show off what visitors to the show have been missing out on. Fotokite produces the Fotokite Sigma, an industrial grade tethered drone system that aids fire and rescue teams with a bird’s eye perspective of a location, featuring thermal and RGB video streams that can be viewed simultaneously from a central ruggedised tablet. The Fotokite Sigma launches with the push of a button and is fully autonomous when in flight and can operate indefinitely. This means that teams require minimal training to operate the drone and can focus their attention on the task at hand instead of piloting the drone.  Current emerging trends that made themselves apparent in this year’s show was a focus on sustainability. A strong vehicle presence, led by industry giants Rosenbauer, Magirus and Volkan showcased the latest fire engines and accompanying technologies as well developments on electric and hybrid fire engines in response to the increasing preference for more environmentally-friendly transportation.   Rosenbauer also debuted a new rescue fireboat with help from PALFINGER MARINE to expand their forest fighting repertoire. It will be utilised by offshore fire departments to fight fires in places that aren’t readily accessible by land and guarantees the safety of its staff by keeping distance from the raging flames. Another added bonus of the fireboat is that it is surrounded by its extinguishing agent, meaning that a limitless supply of water can be continuously pumped on-site which will prove instrumental in taming some of the most aggressive blazes that fire services face; it couldn’t have come at a more crucial time, too, as increasing climate concerns means that forest fires are on the rise.  To read more exclusive features and latest news please see our June issue here. Big Interview – Andy Frankum

Fire Buyer catches up exclusively with Andy Frankum, Chair of the National Social Housing Fire Strategy Group  Could you tell us a little bit about your background and how you got to where you are today?  I have been a health and safety professional for over 20 years with a focus on improving organisations to deliver a positive culture. I am a founding member of the National Social Housing Fire Strategy Group (NSHFSG) and work tirelessly with other sector colleagues to drive improvements across and within the social housing sector.   What motivated the founding of the National Social Housing Fire Strategy Group?  The National Social Housing Fire Strategy Group (NSHFSG) is a voluntary organisation made up of competent fire safety professionals that work for or are appointed by social housing providers and local authorities in England and Wales.  The group was motivated and born from the aftermath of a previous tragedy at Lakanal House in 2009 in Camberwell, London. There was a lot of confusion, not a lot of competence and a real need to come together to share good practice and bring providers together to improve the state of fire safety, especially if lessons were to be learnt. It has always been about the human impact for us, to preserve life and property.  The group has evolved over time, and we also have a number of organisations who operate in the sector to provide input and advice onto our Executive committee. Organisations like the National Fire Chiefs Council, National Housing Federation, Local Authority Building Control and the Fire Protection Association to name a few.  It was recently the five-year anniversary of the Grenfell Tower disaster, placing fire safety at the top of everyone’s list. What has Grenfell taught us?  Firstly, I would like to continue to offer my thoughts and prayers for everyone affected by this terrible event and we strive every day to influence and change practice to ensure residents remain safe in the future.   Fire Safety was always at the top of our list. 5 years on – a lot of change has happened, but there is still so much more to do. Grenfell has taught us that de-regulation, financial drivers, complacency, reliance on standards, failure to deliver safe outcomes, bias and not listening to the very people we are trying to protect has all contributed to these failures.   We continue to strive for more longer lasting reform and in the meantime our members are doing everything they can to ensure residents are as safe as possible in their respective organisations, challenging decision making and providing competent advice and guidance to their employers to ensure their residents are safe.  To read more exclusive features and latest news please see our June issue here. Gulf Coast receives 3 Frontline Comms vehicles

Frontline Communications, a division of Pierce Manufacturing Inc., and a subsidiary of Oshkosh Corporation, announced today Gulf Coast State College in Panama City, Florida, has taken delivery of three disaster response vehicles incorporating advanced communication and technology features. Sold through Pierce and Frontline Communications’ dealer, Ten-8 Fire Equipment, the highly customised vehicles include two C-25 Mobile Command Vehicles and one C-33 Mobile Command Centre.  “When hurricane Michael came through in 2018, it was a category 5 event resulting in extensive damage and communications challenges,” said James Baxley Jr., executive director of radio, TV, and broadcasting with Gulf Coast State College. “We aimed to close communications gaps and do a better job next time, and our new Frontline Communications disaster response vehicles provide us with the most technologically advanced resources to face future events. The vehicles were obtained through the Triumph Grant and maintain an eight-county memorandum of understanding to be put in service where and when needed to support emergency operations.”  Some of the most notable system design and integrated communications attributes of Gulf Coast State College’s new disaster response vehicles include:  Cellular and satellite data network  Point-to-point transmission system 2+ gigabit per minute  Dual HD/thermal PTZ camera  Columbia weatherstation  HAM radio system with auto-tuning and PC controls  Video switching matrix  Multiple PCs for data processing  42-foot mast for custom antenna/camera deployment  Docking station for TVU cellular backpack encoder  Exterior workstation with anti-glare monitor  Electric awning  UHF, VHF, and HAM radios  The vehicles’ data services on a cellular and satellite backbone are augmented by a mast-based, point-to-point transmission system featuring auto-acquisition and transfer rates of over two gigabit per minute, intended for transfer of live UAV video between trucks. Baxley added, “With over 40 years of building communications vehicles, we knew Frontline Communications would be able to deliver what we needed. These new vehicles were customised to fit our needs, and we hope even more than the eight counties around us will benefit from their remarkable features when they are faced with water, hurricanes, fire, and other emergencies.” Gulf Coast State College’s new disaster response vehicles were delivered in late May, and emergency responders have begun extensive training to properly utilise the assets when needed. “We’ve appreciated having the opportunity to work with Gulf Coast State College developing vehicles which will provide critical disaster response and communications support for such a substantial geographic area in Florida,” said Rob McAtee, fire apparatus sales representative with Ten-8 Fire Equipment. “The customised design of the two C-25 Mobile Command Vehicles and one C-33 Mobile Command Centre incorporates some of the most advanced features we’ve built into specialty vehicles to date. ASFP opens nominations for 2022 PFP Awards

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection is seeking nominations for its range of Passive Fire Protection Industry Awards, which aim to highlight excellence in passive fire protection (PFP) and to reward those who contribute to the advancement of awareness, quality and education within the sector. The 2022 Awards have been increased to a total of nine, with the addition of new awards for Best Customer Service; Best Marketing Campaign; and Highest Engagement of the Year. The Association’s full range of awards for the year will include: Passive Fire Protection Advocate: Open to all involved in fire safety in the built environment, this award aims to reward a non-member who can demonstrate that they are a major advocate for high quality installed PFP. Passive Fire Innovation: Open to ASFP members only, this will be awarded to an ASFP member company who has an exceptional example of an innovative passive fire protection product or service. For example, an installation method, new software or a new product. Best Installation Project: This will be awarded to an ASFP member who has undertaken the best installation project. Criteria to be considered include: difficulties encountered in installation (access, special site requirements, challenging conditions, product difficulties); overall quality of the installation; and third party and testimonials from satisfied clients. Lifetime Contribution: Open to ASFP members only, this will be awarded to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional practice over a significant period of 20-plus years. This individual will have made an impact on people, organisations, or companies and displayed wisdom and depth of service/leadership. Training and Development: Awarded to a member company or individual who throughout the year of 2022 has completed multiple courses/training, developing themselves or their team. They will have broadened their knowledge and understanding within the sector. Individual Rising Star: This recognises an individual who has shown exceptional potential in a short period of time in the industry (less than five years). This person, who is not yet at a senior level within their company, shows promising signs at a young age (under 30). They strive to achieve success and results and are recognised by others as having the potential to become a future leader of the industry. Best Customer Service: Awarded to a member company  or individual who best demonstrates the importance of customer service. Marketing Campaign: This will be awarded to a member company of the ASFP that has delivered an effective marketing campaign that really catches the eye of the industry and demonstrates passive fire protection best practice. Highest Engagement: This will recognise a member company  or individual who has used the ASFP benefits and services to the fullest extent, taking part in our marketing campaigns, events, committees and training. Aico launch new HomeLINK App

Seeking to empower residents to create safer and healthier homes, Aico, the European Market Leader in Home Life Safety, has launched the third iteration of the HomeLINK App for Residents. Ramtech Fire Safety White Paper Published

Maximum extinguishing ability

How can monitors and nozzles have the maximum extinguishing ability, while minimising the use of excessive water and enhancing sustainability efforts?  Monitors and nozzles are used in a variety of ways to suppress fire. The use of a monitor or nozzle determines how much and in what way water or foam is dispersed to put out different types of fires. This type of equipment can come in many different shapes and forms and be imbedded with remote monitoring, smart capabilities and innovative technologies.   To understand what makes a nozzle better suited to some circumstances and not others, it’s important to understand a little bit more about fire.  A fire needs three elements to ignite: fuel, heat, and oxygen. The fuel can be anything flammable, like firewood or gasoline. Heat adds energy to the fuel, causing the atoms inside it to vibrate. As these vibrations intensify, stable bonds between atoms begin to fall apart, vaporizing the fuel. The chemical reaction between these vapors and nearby oxygen creates fire.  Water is widely used in firefighting for the same reason it takes so long to boil. Water resists changes in temperature. Water molecules can’t vibrate quickly unless the hydrogen bonds—the H2 in H2O—break, and that takes a lot of energy. As a result, dousing a fire with water can take away much of the fuel’s heat, interrupting the chemical reaction that sustains it.  But there’s more to fighting fires than spraying as much water as quickly as possible. Each situation requires firefighters to consider questions like:  Will water travel far enough?  Will the stream penetrate burning materials?  Can heat and smoke be removed from the area using air currents created by moving water?  How much water pressure is available?  Does the area need to be cooled before firefighters can safely enter?  Is the building still occupied and, if so, would steam created by firefighters harm those people?  Nozzles  In some instances, water may not be used at all. When the source of the flames is a flammable liquid, like gasoline or paint, it may be advantageous to use a foam-based extinguishing agent, which stops the fire’s chemical reaction by depriving it of oxygen. All of these considerations and more may weigh in favour of a particular nozzle for a particular use.  Pattern, pressure and gallonage distinguish one fire hose spray nozzle from another. There are three major ways in which a nozzle’s output can vary:  Pattern: the water’s shape as it exits the nozzle  Pressure: the water’s force, measured in pounds per square inch (PSI)  Gallonage or discharge rate: how quickly water flows from the nozzle, measured in gallons per minute (GPM) To read the rest of this feature, as well as the latest news please see our June issue here. Ask the Expert – Teledyne FLIR

The Fire Buyer team exclusively interviews Christian Pehl, Regional Sales Manager for Teledyne FLIR, to find out how his company is paving the way for innovation in the fire industry  Could you introduce yourself and what you do?   My name is Christian, and I’ve been working in the fire industry since 2003. I’m a Volunteer Fire Chief in a station with 50 volunteer firefighters and I’ve been in the fire service for 29 years now.   FLIR approached me in 2015, for business development and sales and for the firefighting product range. FLIR is the largest manufacturer for thermal imaging cameras worldwide and we have a wide range of thermal imaging cameras. We do scientific cameras, we do cameras for testing purposes, for maintenance; in 2015, the first firefighting cameras were introduced at Interschutz.   Since then, we have grown this market worldwide. We are very strong in the United States, of course, which is the largest market for firefighting equipment. But also, in Europe, we’ve been growing rapidly, especially in the UK, which is my market responsibility. Our aim was to bring the thermal imaging technology to a much wider range of firefighters. In the past the products have been very high-priced, very expensive, and we have driven down the price very much with our technology; because we’ve used technology that was also used in industrial applications, which made for a much wider usage. Of course, if you have larger quantities you can bring down the cost of production significantly, and that’s what we did. We also have introduced a low budget version of our camera. The aim for that was to give every single firefighter that is walking into a burning building the ability to use a thermal imaging camera, and that was the K2 at the time. This is probably the most sold camera worldwide at the moment in the fire industry.   How do you ensure innovation in your product?   We have not only one specific product for firefighting, but we also cover the complete range of thermal imaging cameras, over several industries and several applications. Therefore, we always have synergies within the company that we can use, not only for the specific firefighting part of the business, but also for a mass market. For example, the Caterpillar phone. Caterpillar has a phone on the market, which includes a thermal imaging camera. That is a wide range of products where we use the same technology and that helps us first of all to split the cost of development and also to bring the cost of production down, because we have not only the specific product but a much wider, larger range of products where we can use a specific part.   How do you keep FLIR’s product range above the rest of the competition?   Well, that’s a good question. Our core knowledge, of course, is that we are specifically developing products for certain applications. So, not only can we use the technology that we have in a variety of industries, but we also have specialists for certain applications. That means we have specialists in defence and in science for example and – with me and my colleagues – in firefighting.
