Advanced appoints Mike Cottam, Sales Director

Mike Cottam has been appointed as Sales Director at fire protection solutions company Advanced. Cottam joins Advanced from global science-based technology company 3M where over the past 19 years he has held a variety of roles covering sales and marketing, integration and Lean Six Sigma. In his latest position as EMEA Segment and Channel Leader within 3M’s Abrasive Systems Division based in Dubai, Cottam headed up the sales and marketing strategy to expand the division’s customer base into key metal working segments across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In his new role, Mike will draw on his wide-ranging experience to lead Advanced’s sales, marketing, customer service and technical support teams in delivering excellent customer experience and accelerated growth in new and existing markets. Commenting on his appointment, Cottam said: “Advanced has a clear purpose of creating a safer future, something I’m very passionate about and eager to play my part in achieving. With first half revenues exceeding any prior full year except ’21 and all the other improvements we are making I am excited by what I expect the Beam Team will make happen during the remainder of 2022. ” Second Fiscal Quarter 2022 Financial Summary Revenues Beam Global reported record second quarter revenues of $3.7 million in the second fiscal quarter of 2022, compared to $2.1 million in the same period in the prior year, an increase of 75%. For the first six months of 2022, we reported record first half revenues of $7.5 million, a 114% increase over $3.5 million reported for the same period in 2021. Revenues included $1.4 million for energy storage in the second quarter and $1.8 million for the six months ended June 30, 2022 as a result of closing the acquisition of All Cell Technologies, LLC (“All Cell”) in early March. Gross Loss Gross loss in the three months ended June 30, 2022 and 2021 was $0.3 million. Gross loss for the first six months of 2022 was $0.6 million, compared to $0.4 million for the same period in 2021. As a percentage of sales, the gross loss improved by four percentage points for the quarter and year to date, reflecting favorable fixed overhead absorption and improved labor efficiency due to the increase in production levels. This was partially offset by an increase in material costs for steel and other components due to supply chain shortages and other inflationary pressures. A new in-depth white paper has been published by global wireless solutions firm Ramtech to address construction fire and life safety challenges in the US that can have devastating consequences such as loss of civilian life and millions of dollars in direct property damage annually. Titled ‘No Site Left Behind: The Modern Fire and Life Safety Solutions for Construction’, the white paper includes unique industry insight from Turner Construction to help raise awareness of fire risk and the life safety solutions, including wireless fire evacuation system technology, available across America. Unprecedented wildfires

Ian King, COO at Zeroignition, has provided his thoughts on the impact a rise in wildfires could have on both the environment and communities, and how they can be contained. “Summer 2022 has been one of the hottest on record and temperatures are set to soar again this weekend, prompting the Met Office to raise the Fire Severity Index to the highest, “exceptional” level for multiple stretches of southern England. Climate warming is the catalyst for this sharp spike in temperatures and its clear significant change is needed, yet according to the Climate Change Committee the UK’s climate policies are lagging far behind what is needed to meet the Paris agreement. A bold decarbonisation plan is now essential to help prevent heat waves like this one from becoming more dangerous and more frequent. So, as the temperatures continue to rise, threatening the outbreak of wildfires across the country, we need to turn to countries more experienced in wildfires like the USA and Australia for guidance, which rely heavily on fire suppressants to control outbreaks.  As it stands, the UK will only use suppliers approved by the US Forest Service. This means that ‘Phos-Chek’, the suppressant used currently in the US, will also be the number one choice for the UK – yet demand is high. The issue here is that the supply is limited and will only be able to service some of the demand. The result? An inevitable price war as to who will obtain it first, with the UK competing against wealthy conglomerates in the US. It’s a worry, and I’m not sure many will have considered the impact given that scorching summers look set to stay here in the UK. Our only hope is to innovate and take lessons from seasoned fire services abroad to ensure we’re doing everything we can to educate our emergency services, and the general public on wildfire prevention and control strategies to keep both us and wild habitats safe throughout the summers for years to come.” To read more exclusive features and latest news please see our latest issue here. Warringtonfire marks 50th anniversary

Warringtonfire is marking the 50th anniversary of its first commercial fire test, which took place at a newly completed fire testing laboratory in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, in the summer of 1972. 50 years later, what is believed to be the UK’s oldest existing fire resistance testing laboratory, continues to operate. Today, it is one of Warringtonfire’s main sites and is a centre of excellence for the testing of timber fire doors. In addition to being an early pioneer in fire testing, Warringtonfire has remained at the forefront of the industry. Through its collaboration with trade associations and standards committees, Warringtonfire’s team of highly respected technical experts continue to play a pivotal role in raising standards in the fire protection industry. Recognising how much customers rely on specialist technical knowledge to support them through the testing process, Warringtonfire has continued to invest heavily in building a world class team of technical experts and has one of the largest global teams in the industry. Mark Cummings, Technical Director at Warringtonfire, said: “Since 1972, we’ve conducted tens of thousands of fire tests at our High Wycombe laboratory, all designed to ensure that the products our customers develop are safe, compliant and fit for purpose. It never ceases to amaze me that many of the products that we all walk past every day, in offices, airports, schools or hospitals, will have been developed and tested at our facility at High Wycombe and we’re extremely proud of our work.” He continues: “However, we’re not resting on our laurels and with the significant changes we’re seeing in the built environment landscape today, we know there’s much to do if we are to continue to deliver on our purpose of making tomorrow safer than today. Our focus for the future is to continue working with key trade associations and standards committees using the deep technical expertise we possess, particularly of those colleagues in our Scope and Governance team, to constantly raise industry standards. “Alongside this, our people are critical to our success – they always have been. We will continue to invest in our people, developing the careers of both our existing colleagues through initiatives such as our Ignite programme as well as bringing in new talent through our Graduate Intake Scheme.” Although Warringtonfire’s High Wycombe laboratory specialises in the testing of timber fire doors, over the years it has also tested many unusual products. These include the front end of a train as well as an eco-development of a straw bale house. As well as 50 years of fire testing at High Wycombe, this year also marks two further significant milestones. It is 25 years since the introduction of sister company BM TRADA’s Q-Mark third party certification scheme, and 30 years since the inception of the Warringtonfire Certifire scheme. Both have played a critical role in raising standards of fire protection in the built environment and today are widely recognised, respected and specified by end users across the globe. “We have come a long way since our first ever test at this site, and the products that our customers have developed and tested at our facility have undoubtedly had a positive impact on the built environment,” said Mr Cummings. “It is a great foundation on which to build on and to enable us to continue to make tomorrow safer than today over the next 50 years.”   To read more exclusive features and latest news see our June issue here. DuPont Personal Protection recognised the latest in Nomex design ingenuity during the 2022 Nomex Innovation Awards at Interschutz, a leading trade fair for fire and rescue services, civil protection and safety and security sectors. The seventh annual award ceremony was held in Hannover, Germany on June 21, 2022, and highlighted collaboration between European Nomex partners and DuPont in developing solutions made with Nomex in applications that help provide enhanced end-user safety. Tsurumi to demonstrate its pumps at Bauma 2022

Tsurumi, market leader in dewatering pumps, will be lifting the veil on its new safety pumps at Bauma 2022 and show visitors how to service a pump properly. This has never happened before: for the first time, the exhibitor is coming to Bauma with a workbench where visitors can demonstrate their skills. The task is to service a pump, especially in the sensitive areas of hydraulics and electrics. Those who have not yet mastered this can learn it on site at stand A6.338. A valuable lesson, because pump failures can not only be expensive but also end in accidents. Safety is also the focus of the new product presentation, which the Japanese have saved as a further treat for the fair: For the first time, they are showing the KRDX, a model in their new series of safety pumps that are approved according to IECEx and ATEX. The three-phase submersible heavy-duty pumps are designed for slurry drainage/pumping and have motor outputs from 3.7 to 7.5 kW. They are equipped with an agitator and an outlet of up to 100 mm to pass solids up to 33 mm in size. Tsurumi states a pumping capacity of 2,200 l/min. Safety, part three: Tsurumi presents its Connect system for seamless monitoring of pumps and other machines, including those from other manufacturers. Via a small box on the unit, the operator can determine the location, read out performance data and set alarm and error scenarios. The aim is to raise safety and efficiency to a new level. The first systems are already in use on the market. And what else? The manufacturer provides information on many other pump models, including novelties such as the residue dewatering pump LSC2.75S. Some of them are even demonstrated in wet live operation, for which Tsurumi specially sets up a complete basin with piping. Workhorses such as the KTZ and KRS pump series are also represented on the stand, as they form – not without reason – the backbone of dewatering in many construction projects around the globe. Bosch releases new version of Safety Systems Designer

Bosch has released its new software version of Safety Systems Designer. On top, there is also a new, free plugin available that enables automatic data transfer between AutoCAD software and Bosch Safety Systems Designer. This free Bosch SSD Plugin is the only tool of its type offered by any fire alarm system manufacturer. Architects, planners and system integrators now enjoy the benefit of easily importing fire alarm system devices from floor plans into the Safety Systems Designer software. AutoCAD software is the most frequently used platform for building- and fire alarm systems design covering all planning phases. The Bosch SSD Plugin changes a time-consuming process from the users’ daily work routine into a stream-lined experience: With the new SSD Plugin, the process is now fast, reliable and simple, enabling better project design and synchronization at any scale, so fire alarm systems can be imported no matter the size of the floor plan or building project. Comprehensive CAD blocks library available The Bosch SSD Plugin includes an extensive SSD CAD blocks library allowing designers to pick icons from more than 150 of EN 54 fire alarm system devices. These can then be placed comfortably onto floor plans through the AutoCAD blocks palette. What’s more, the SSD Plugin can be used with any customer specific CAD block, so that these can be amended and then transferred to Safety System Designer. One solution for a variety of tasks To improve the efficiency even further, every fire alarm system device can be assigned to a panel as well as to a loop in the context menu of the AutoCAD application. Safety Systems Designer automatically keeps these assignments to panel or loop after the import. After import to Safety Systems Designer, users can continue further in-depth planning such as preparing a bill of material, a tender text, the battery calculation, or a system viability check. The new version of Safety Systems Designer and the Bosch SSD Plugin for AutoCAD software are available immediately free of charge and can be installed effortlessly with a simple setup assistant.
