From the Expert – Fire and Gas Detection Technologies

Dr Eliot Sizeland C.Eng MInstMC , Vice President of Business Development, Fire & Gas Detection Technologies explains how to select the right flame detector  This is the first of a two-part article where we provide pointers for flame detector selection. Detection technologies are chosen based on the application they will be used in.  For decades, radiant energy-sensing flame detectors have been applied as optical fire detectors for hazardous processes, as well as industrial and commercial facility fire protection.  Fires emit electromagnetic radiation in the infrared (IR), visible light (VIS), and ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths depending, on the fuel source. Flame detectors utilise sensors which are matched to the respective spectral bands to measure the emitted radiant energy to determine if a flame is real.  Flame detector design engineers have long understood that the “perfect” detector must achieve a balance between positive flame detection and absolute false alarm rejection. Today, it is generally accepted that there is no such thing as a perfect flame detector. They all have their strengths and limitations, and a variety of flame sensing technologies may be needed to match the flame type within the environment and/or application the detector will be present in.  Optical detectors can ‘see’ a fire from a long distance without the smoke or heat needing to reach the detector first. This means the detectors respond to a fire event extremely quickly, and at long distances, for example, a flaming 1 square foot (0.1m2) of n-heptane fire can be detected up to 80 m away in only 7.1 seconds1. This capability makes optical flame detection highly effective in outdoor locations and in large volume buildings where conventional fire detection techniques would not work.  What optical flame detector types are commonly available today?  The most common optical flame detectors used today are:  UV-IR – A combination of UV and IR sensing technologies.  IR3 – Triple IR – the use of three IR bands for fire detection and false alarm rejection.  As we will see later, the optical filter selected for the infrared portion of the flame detector is key in determining the type of fire the device will respond to.  UV Flame Detection  UV flame detection has been used since the early 1970’s.  Most UV detectors use a sensor tube that detects radiation emitted in the range of 180 to 250 nanometres (nm).  UV flame detectors can respond very quickly to fires, as their detection mechanism is related to the number of photons (light energy) being received by the detector each second. Once the pre-set threshold has been exceeded the alarm sounds.  Virtually all fires emit radiation in this band, while the sun’s radiation is absorbed by the Earth’s atmosphere. The result is a detector that is solar blind.  UV detectors are sensitive to most fires, including hydrocarbon (liquids, gases, and solids), metals (magnesium), sulphur, hydrogen, hydrazine, and ammonia.  Today, UV flame detectors are mainly used within the acoustic enclosure of gas turbines. This is because UV detectors are insensitive to the heat generated by the turbine.  Whilst UV detectors are good general-purpose devices, they do have false alarm issues with arc welding, lightning, X-rays, sparks, arcs, and corona.  It should also be noted that some gases and vapours inhibit detection, e.g., toluene and that optical contamination, oil mist, dust, dirt, sand can also blind the detector.  To read the rest of this feature, see our latest issue here. AFAC releases 2022 Seasonal Bushfire Outlook

AFAC, the National Council for fire and emergency services in Australia and New Zealand, has released the Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for Summer 2022. The Outlook shows that many parts of Australia saw above average rainfall and significant flooding this year and that the saturated ground in many of these regions supports enhanced vegetation and fuel load growth. This, in combination with expected warmer and drier conditions later in the season, is generating varied fire potential for summer 2022. Over the course of the summer, as vegetation naturally dries out with the normal seasonal cycle, the fire potential may rise quickly with any extended period of hot, dry and windy weather, meaning that it is possible for regions of below normal bushfire potential at the start of summer to transition to normal, or even above normal, bushfire potential later in the season. Above normal fire potential is expected in central western and southern WA, central Australia, southern Queensland and inland NSW due to increased fuel loads as a result of significant rainfall. Western Tasmania also shows above normal fire potential following a dry spring period. Areas across Victoria, NSW and the ACT show below normal fire potential due to increased fuel moisture, the continued wet outlook and reduced fuel loads following the 2019-20 bushfire season. While most of Australia shows normal fire potential during the summer outlook period, anyone living and working in these areas needs to be vigilant. Destructive and deadly fires can still occur during normal bushfire seasons across Australia. AFAC CEO Rob Webb said: ‘The Seasonal Bushfire Outlook is developed in collaboration with fire agencies across Australia, bringing their knowledge and observations together, which are supported by insights and forecasting from the Bureau of Meteorology, to develop a national picture of fire potential.” “This Outlook shows a diversity of fire risk this season, which reflects the diversity of Australia’s landscape. As we enter summer, we will use this Outlook to guide our operational and strategic planning, and jurisdictional fire and emergency services will continue to monitor local conditions.” This Seasonal Outlook was developed by AFAC, the Bureau of Meteorology, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, the NSW Rural Fire Service, ACT Emergency Services Agency, ACT Parks and Conservation Service, Country Fire Authority, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning Victoria, Tasmania Fire Service, SA Country Fire Service, Department of Fire and Emergency Services and Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions WA, and Bushfires NT. Without correctly specified ironmongery, a fire door can be considered useless.  Just as important is the durability and certification of the product in use. A fire door must work for life, not just for three months.   What person, living or dead, would you like to meet and why?  Purely from a leadership perspective, Winston Churchill – a true leader.    If you could talk to your younger self, what would you say?  Listen to your elders when they’re giving advice, because when you get there, you realise they had a point.   Describe a funny thing that happened to you recently?  I was waiting for a train in Croatia recently, persistently waving at the door for it to open when it arrived, only for someone to point out it was already open.   What three traits define you?  Passionate, bold and bubbly.   What’s your favourite meal and why?  It has to be beef wellington and cheesecake. I’m thinking back to my first-time cooking for a big dinner party at university and I’d never cooked for so many people before. To detect with intellect

Smoke and flame detection systems have faltered in recent years, its technology comparatively primitive versus its peers. Where will future innovation guide smarter detection systems?  As I mention in our deeper dive into alarm systems in this issue of Fire Buyer, fire alarms are at the forefront of every fire rescue effort, beginning with them. The first line of defence in the event of any fire is alerting residents and visitors of a building to a fire the moment it breaks out, so that evacuation can be conducted swiftly and effectively. Alarm systems enable this procedure; it is imperative that their function is both faultless and equally as swift. As soon as a fire begins, it must be detected. While it is true that a vast majority of alarms in the UK end up being false alarms, it is better to err on the side of extreme caution than be complacent. Indeed, we have seen poor detection systems in recent years be largely at fault for one of the largest domestic tragedies in the country’s history.   It is no understatement to say that the Grenfell Tower tragedy and many subsequent fire safety failings of its ilk have changed the fire safety landscape forever. What before was an incredibly lax and ambivalent attitude towards fire safety in public housing by regulators, inspectors and officials culminated in a disaster that claimed the lives of so many people and left many more homeless. Even now, the repercussions and discord that swarms around the matter remains unresolved: as of today, no significant arrests have been made as a result of the abject neglect the residents of Grenfell Tower experienced at the hands of construction companies and fire safety inspectors alike. Work is ongoing though, to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. In the meantime, other work has continued behind the scenes to ensure disasters of this magnitude can never happen again. As we all know, a large malefactor into the downfall of Grenfell was wall cladding that was ill-suited – no, unacceptable – to be used in any building, let alone a place of residence; it’s known now that it was because of this cladding that the fire was able to spread to readily and so voraciously. By the time that fire and smoke detectors had sounded throughout the building, the fire was already well out of control.     It was these lessons, as well as drive to protect people from the shortcomings of manufacturers and inspectors, that led many companies to go away and create a better alarm system that ensures instant detection that can alert everyone – even in a building as large as Grenfell – at the exact moment that the detector makes contact. This can only be achieved by ushering in the next stage of detection: smart, interconnected technologies. Today will shine the spotlight on the new era of smart detection and all the perks and quirks it has over its “dumber” predecessors.   Laying the foundations for smart technology   But first, it’s important to understand what exactly “dumb” (in this context, referring to more archaic and rudimentary detection systems; the kind you find in most dwellings and buildings) detection systems do exactly, and why smart systems are necessity, not a luxury. Dumb detection hinges completely on smoke or heat gathering near the device – fitted in lofty positions in the building, where smoke and fire is most likely to congregate. As soon as a certain threshold is exceeded in the air around the device, the alarm sounds, alerting everyone to the fire (that oftentimes, they already know about). A lot of more modern versions of these devices are wirelessly linked so that if one alarm goes off, they all go off. It was this wireless technology that formed the hotbed for the development of smart detection tech.  To read the rest of this feature, see our latest issue here. SFPE names new 2023 President

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), a professional society for fire protection and fire safety engineering, has named Jimmy Jönsson, FSFPE, its 2023 President, and Bob Libby, PE, FSFPE, its President-Elect. Jimmy Jönsson, FSFPE, is Director of JVVA Fire & Risk in Madrid, Spain. Jönsson has been an SFPE member for 20 years, has served as the first president of the SFPE Spain Chapter, was the first elected president of the group that became SFPE Europe, and currently serves as editor of the SFPE EUROPE magazine and as an officer on the SFPE Board of Directors.  He holds a BSc in Fire Protection Engineering and an MSc in Risk Management & Safety Engineering – both from Lund University in Sweden. Jönsson is currently serving as the Program Committee Chair of both the SFPE European Conference & Expo on Fire Safety Engineering scheduled for March 2023 in Berlin, Germany, and the SFPE Annual Conference & Expo scheduled for October 2023 in Washington D.C./Bethesda, MD, USA. Bob Libby, PE, FSFPE, was elected President-Elect.  Libby is Senior Vice President and Principal of Fire Protection Engineering at Coffman Engineers, where he has extensive experience in the specification, bid, award, installation, management, testing, and acceptance of fire protection systems in commercial buildings. He has been an SFPE member for 40 years and active in several SFPE chapters over those years. Amanda Kimball, PE, FSFPE, has been re-elected to another year as Secretary-Treasurer, and Shaun Kelly, PEng, CEng, MIEI, PMSFPE, has been re-elected to another term on the SFPE Board of Directors. John Frank, PE, FSFPE, and Fang Li, PE, FSFPE, have been elected to join the SFPE Board of Directors. White Ribbon Award for Cheshire Fire

Thursday 25 November marked White Ribbon Day which is a campaign that works to address domestic violence against women. Cheshire Fire and Rescue service worked closely with Chester Women’s Aid to organise an event in Chester city centre on Sunday 28 November. This event saw them display a huge White Ribbon which is a visible representation of them standing with key partners in addressing and ending domestic violence. Chief Fire Officer Mark Cashin, said: “White Ribbon is a fantastic national campaign which addresses the real issue of domestic violence. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is currently embarking on revalidating its White Ribbon accreditation which we first completed in 2018. This area of work enables us to bring greater awareness of this issue to the public and encourage victims of domestic violence to not suffer in silence and come forward. “A big part of our work includes offering fire safety advice to at risk adults and young people, which can include fitting fire-proof letter box covers, smoke alarms, and wheelie bin locks. Domestic arson is often linked to domestic violence and can be a common problem. “The Service recognises that it is not only women who are victims of domestic abuse. Unfortunately, domestic abuse is also perpetrated both by women against men and in same sex relationships. However, whilst both men and women may experience domestic abuse, women are considerably more likely to experience repeated and severe forms of abuse, including sexual violence. “We are also committed to supporting Open the Door, a county-wide campaign which aims to bring domestic abuse out from behind closed doors by encouraging people to start a conversation and seek advice and support. “As a Service it is fundamentally important to protect the public of Cheshire, which is why we continue to stand up and support these campaigns that tackle domestic violence; it is absolutely the right thing to do.
