Comelit-PAC Fire Safety on the Cloud

Comelit-PAC has evolved its LogiFire fire safety range to enable monitoring and management via cloud technology through its MyComelit app. The fire safety system, enhanced with its user-friendly touchscreen display and stylish design, is now available to operate with the fully responsive app from Comelit-PAC. This enables users to log, manage and administrate the commissioning, servicing, maintenance, testing, performance and day-to-day use of the connected fire alarm systems. Brent Brooks, Specialist, Highrise Firefighting  What does ‘fire protection’ mean to you?   “Fire protection” encompasses a multi-layer approach to safety. Protection starts with design and engineered drawings. Architects, engineers and designers must include the expectation of fire in their design build. This team of builders must calculate how fire and smoke will behave throughout the project from its infancy to completion. Occupants and firefighters also need to be included in this fire protection equation. How will smoke and fire be detected? How will occupants be notified of a fire? How will compartmentalization prevent smoke and fire from spreading and for how long? What is the plan for a full evacuation? What obstacles will firefighters face and can the building provide an adequate water supply for firefighting hose lines? Education is key for all parties involved. What materials are being used in the build and how will they respond during a fire? The fire service is the last resort in the “fire protection” plan. If all layers of fire protection have failed then the fire service takes over. Firefighters have to immediately trouble shoot the problem and forecast solutions, not easy when we add vertical response time calculations.   What made you want to work in the industry?   I was attracted to the idea of becoming a firefighter after witnessing first-hand the compassion given to me and my friends after escaping a house fire during Christmas. I was 13 at the time. I want to be as good as the firefighters that helped us that day.   If you could talk to your younger self, what would you say?   Embrace change. Don’t be handcuffed by tradition. Continue to read and research. Except that you will never know it all. Imagine where and what you want to do when you retire. Work towards that goal. Have a plan.   Describe a funny thing that happened to you recently?   I was off duty at a retirement party for a firefighter, when a group of out of town firefighters started talking about this High-Rise guy from Toronto named Brent Brooks. “Brent is making big changes to our fire department by donating his time”. I said “really…” and played along with them until another friend ruined it by telling them who I was. It felt good. Big Interview – Paul Pope

Fire Buyer editor Louis Curtis has a chat with IFSEC Top 10 Influencer for 2022 and lifelong fire safety pioneer Paul Pope about what the future holds for the industry  Could you introduce yourself and what you do?  I’ve worked in the fire safety sector for more than 35 years and my current role is Group Business Development Director for Global Fire Equipment (GFE). I am responsible for a broad range of business growth activities, from the development of new products and systems to marketing and increasing global sales. Our products and systems are currently sold in more than 90 countries worldwide, and we have set our sights on a significant and sustained growth in sales, as well as product innovation.    I was recently re-elected as a Board Director of the Fire Industry Association (FIA) in the UK – my third term as a director! I’m also on the FIA’s Fire Detection and Alarm Council, Service Council and Export Council.  What drew you to be a fire safety professional when you first started out?  I think it was inevitable really, as my father worked for the London Fire Brigade (LFB) for almost 30 years, so I was always visiting fire stations as a child and saw at first hand the work of the fire and rescue service. My father worked his way up the ranks until he became a Senior Divisional Officer with responsibility for fire safety within the City of Westminster, including prestigious premises such as the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace. He was also tasked with investigating major fires – including producing the LFB report into the Kings Cross fire disaster in 1987 when 31 people died. Consequently, I was brought up with fire safety and I have worked for some prestigious fire and security companies before inevitably finding my way into electrical engineering within the fire safety sector. After 35 years, I’m still delighted that I continued the family history in fire safety.  You made the Top Ten in IFSEC’s Global Influencers in fire safety for 2022. Congratulations! What do you think made you deserving of a spot on the list?  This award is particularly special as you have to be nominated by someone else.  It is also a tremendous honour to be included in a list with the likes of Dennis Davis, Executive Officer of the Fire Sector Federation and Lynsey Seal of the London Fire Brigade, to name a few.   There are probably a couple of reasons I was nominated and subsequently shortlisted. Firstly, my work with the FIA where I’ve been representing the UK’s fire detection industry at government level. Secondly, the campaigning I do to raise industry standards, including speaking at conferences across the world and contributing thought leadership features to the international trade and technical media.    You joined Global Fire Equipment in 2020. What made the company the perfect fit for you to grow as a professional?  The timing seemed perfect as I was ready for a new challenge, and it was a fantastic opportunity to join the leadership team and strategically drive the next phase of GFE’s growth.    This move also allowed me to have a far greater impact internationally by working with like-minded professionals in many different countries. Pumps: through the lens of trends

The end of the year is almost upon us. Now is as good a time as any to reflect back on the year and take a closer look at the market trends that guide the development of pumps   The end of 2022 approaches us. Depending on how disappointing or relieving you interpreted that sentence probably says a lot about how you viewed the year as a whole. Regardless of how your year has gone, though, you can find solace in the fact that as the years go by, our wonderful industry continues to grow and improve upon itself in every facet. Whether it be through technology, training or legislation, every member of the industry does their part in ensuring a safer society for us all to live in. And the emphasis really is on “our” – it’s not just more privileged countries that see their share of the latest fire safety technologies. As equipment becomes safer and more advanced, so too does it become cheaper and more accessible. The latest innovations are not hoarded or squandered by the highest bidder, they are made available to everyone. When everyone is safer from fire, we are afforded more time to innovate upon it.   The impending changes involved in the transition away from fluorinated foams, as well as a decreasing dependency on fossil fuels in recent years has meant that the pumps industry in particular has seen some stark revisions in pump technology. As more money is invested into the industry from an increasing demand in more environmentally friendly and eco-conscious products, so too do we see the changes in pump technologies. The new foams legislation put in place globally to ensure no long-lasting damage to our environment has resulted in technologies morphing in order to accommodate these unexpected changes. For example, fluorine-free foams, as they fall into the hands of more and more fire services possess a greater viscosity than their fluorinated cousins, which means that appropriate training and products must be put in place to ensure that firefighters have enough product on board their vehicles to ensure a job can be done well and avoid wastage, both with the product and financially. Standard pumps do not adequately disperse this new product and so many companies have had to go back to the drawing board to reinvent the future of firefighting technologies. In addition to this, the emerging popularity of electric trucks means that pumps powered by diesel no longer make the most sense to stow on board this new age of trucks. Electric pumps, then, emerge as the new contender for standardised pump technology with emergency services, allowing themselves to be powered from the same unit that drives the vehicle. This means that, while small, the amount of harmful fumes released into the atmosphere by diesel pumps is diminished, which plays its part into ensuring we minimise all possibilities of eroding the ozone layer. The hope is that more fire services will continue to adopt electric vehicles into their fleets, greatly reducing the amount of environmental damage overall while reaping their own unique repertoire of benefits. For example, electric vehicles – and therefore pumps – will be much quieter when in operation, as well as drawing their power from a limitless and clean source of energy, with no emissions.   Great care needs to be taken when operating and maintaining equipment of this type near fires, however: as we all know with the growth in commercial electric vehicles, a battery fire from an electric vehicle burns several times brighter and hotter than a conventional petrol or diesel vehicle, with the former spewing many more toxic chemicals into the immediate area when compared with the latter. This has a compounding effect: with a more intense electrical fire, the need for more powerful and efficient foams is required – the very same foams that the government is fighting to eradicate. It’s no secret that fluorinated foams excel in combating more intense fires when compared to their eco-friendly counterparts, at least for now; it would completely defeat the objective of moving towards more environmentally friendly options if emergency services are forced to use the more superior but more toxic product to deal with the issues that come with battery fires.  To read the rest of this feature, see our latest issue here. Fires can be deadly anywhere, but nowhere conjures more fear than fires in the void of space and the depths of the ocean. How do crew members prevent a guaranteed death sentence?  For the human race, all of our technology, culture and infrastructure are governed entirely by the laws of the universe. What I mean is that, the unbreakable maxims of physics that the entire foundation of existence is built upon have meant that we have produced technologies to cater to these rules. For example, aviation in all its various forms of locomotion exploits gravity and centrifugal forces to achieve flight. Cars utilise the basic rules of chemical combustion to propose propulsion. Likewise, fire suppression in our industry seeks to eliminate one or more of the necessary parameters required for fire to thrive. Most commonly, fire suppression technology removes the oxygen in the area where fire exists, smothering it. This is the most effective tactic available… on the surface of our planet, with an atmosphere, where physics behave in a way that we are familiar with. But the cost of progress brings new challenges.    50 years ago, the human race extended their empire to the cosmos, sending equipment and eventually people into space. An incomprehensible feat, considering that the gulf of space is so alien and inhospitable to life that it threatens to challenge us in ways that nowhere on Earth can replicate, save for the deepest vestiges of our oceans. In space, the laws of the world do not apply. For astronauts, missions can last for months at a time and are conducted in almost complete isolation. While a fire forming on the exterior of the space module or spacecraft is physically impossible, fires that form on the interior are a death sentence if not dealt with immediately. Materials used to insulate the walls from the cold void of space do their best to resist flame, but even the smallest amount of erosion can expose astronauts to the outside, causing sudden – and sometimes explosive – decompression. For this reason, only the most accurate detection systems are deployed on space modules and spacecraft to prevent a fire before it can even take place, by finding the trace evidence of smoke in the air, much like any other smoke detector. However, as we mentioned before, the rules of the world do not apply in space, and scientific study has discovered that smoke particles in zero gravity behave much differently to smoke particles in the atmosphere and are a completely different size entirely. Therefore, bespoke monitoring solutions must be developed to accommodate for this: mankind’s time in space so far has been very limited and leads to restrictive study on how smoke and fire behaves in space, making development difficult.   As briefly touched upon before, space is not the only inhospitable environment mankind has explored in small, isolated vessels. As we have travelled far above the skies, so too have we ventured far below the surface of the ocean, where the world we encounter is just as alien, if not more, than space. It is a widely known fact that we have charted more of our moon than we have the bottom of the ocean, making it a place just as mysterious but just as fatal to mankind. If exposed to space, your blood will boil in your veins from the sudden change in pressure; likewise, if you were exposed to the deep ocean, the crushing pressures exerted on your body would cause you to implode. Venturing into the deep sea requires the same level of protection afforded to astronauts and submarines, in many ways, share many similarities with spacecraft. Both are built to withstand the extraordinary environments they explore, with even the smallest breach in its exterior proving to be certain death for its occupants. As submarines predate spacecraft by roughly 40 years, it’s no surprise, then, that fire safety practices developed for the former translate remarkably well to the latter.   To read the rest of this feature, see our latest issue here. Saying goodbye to Chief Bobby Halton

Fire Buyer magazine are saddened to hear of Fire Engineering Editor and Educational Director for FDIC Chief Bobby Halton’s passing, and express our condolences to his loved ones. According to Fire Engineering, Chief Halton passed away at his home in Oklahoma on 19 December, 2022, and had served as the magazine’s Editor for the last 18 years. Well wishes flooded in, to say goodbye to a man who had been truly influential and instrumental in the fire industry. According to Fire Engineering magazine: “There will never be another Bobby Halton. He defied the odds with cancer and lived his life to the fullest. His passion for history, his love for America, and his understanding of the fire service made him an incredible voice for our profession. He was a trusted friend and mentor who has been a major part of my life for the past 20 years. Working directly with him full-time for the past 5 months has been a blessing that I will treasure forever. His life was service. I will miss you my friend,” said Chief (Ret) David Rhodes, Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, Content Strategist Clarion Events. “Bobby Halton represented the core essence of the fire service. Working with him for years on Fire Engineering magazine, FDIC, and other projects, I witnessed his unwavering devotion and love for firefighters. He always kept firefighters as his focus and mission, making sure that they received the best training possible. He wove his editorials into philosophical motivators for many readers, encouraging them to think and act. Bobby was a unique firefighter who touched many lives His presence will be sorely missed at Fire Engineering, FDIC, and in the fire service itself,” said Glenn Corbett, Technical Editor, Fire Engineering. We wish Chief Halton’s friends and family all the best and say goodbye to someone who touched the fire industry and left an impression on us all. Alan Hiddup is appointed Ramtech’s Business Unit Director

Wireless solutions provider Ramtech has announced the appointment of new Business Unit Director, Alan Middup, to lead its ongoing expansion into international fire safety and security markets. Having completed a trainee programme at Halma plc, Ramtech’s parent company, and become the Global Operations Director at Sentric Safety Group, Alan is well equipped to continue elevating the role innovative wireless safety and security solutions play in solving global site protection challenges. In his role as Business Unit Director, Alan will use his mechanical engineer background to support sustainable business growth and other managerial responsibilities in order to invest in Ramtech’s people, products and solutions in the UK, North America and Middle East. “Ramtech has a strong innovation pipeline and growth into multiple new markets is on the horizon, which is an exciting period for the business. In this new role, my initial focus will be  to build on these objectives by working closely with the sales teams and spending time with our valued customers in all of our key region,” said Alan Middup, Business Unit Director, Ramtech. “I look forward to meeting this challenge head on and to create solutions quickly while accelerating how our existing offerings can be improved through research and development.” His appointment follows on from former Managing Director Andy Hicks, who spent 17 years at the company, moving into a consultative role until the end of Q1 in 2023. Fire detection where it matters most

No one doubts the destructive power of fire. However, some areas of society are more at risk of catastrophe than others: such as oil & gas, power plant and offshore facilities  Without fire detection, we would not have the society we have today – it’s as simple as that. In our tribal roots, fire detection was as simple as running to our neighbouring wattle-and-daub home in our ten-family hamlet and telling them there was a fire. As I’m sure many of you have deduced already, this technique doesn’t exactly fly these days. As technology and our mastery over the elements has developed with society, so has our ability to deal with forces of nature such as our dear old friend, fire. Before the industrial revolution, we did not have to classify buildings as higher or lower risk to fire: they were all as equally at risk as each other and without the widespread use of extremely flammable compounds and localised infrastructure, we did not need to prioritise the fire monitoring of one building over another. As the world grew, so did our capability of detecting smoke and fire. An absolute necessity, considering that society was developing at a frightening pace and the increasing use of fossil fuels and cumbersome machinery meant that the risk of fires was not only on the rise, but the severity of said fires were, too. The first rudimentary alarm systems were designed in 1852, so clearly people in that time were cognizant of the issue, but it wasn’t until the 1950s where reliable detection systems were established. Indeed, it was with the introduction of ionisation smoke detectors, utilising a small and harmless amount of alpha radiation, that more reliable detection was made widespread.    But, again, these systems were a generalised production, as specialist detection would take some time to research and develop to better cater for the emerging critical infrastructure facilities that only really started taking off after the Second World War. Sprawling power plants and substations and oil & gas facilities that reside both on and off shore started sprouting up everywhere as the world started to rebuild and with them ushered in new advanced methods of fire detection. Entire settlements and sometimes counties rely on these facilities: a fire in any one of these could be disruptive for hours or even days at a time. Let’s take a look at how leading detection manufacturers are creating ways to protect these integral facilities.   Offshore oil rigs are some of the most perilous locations on Earth. Offshore workers receive some of the highest salaries in their field due to the inherent danger they face on a daily basis. In locations such as the North Sea, temperatures rarely exceed freezing, with unabated, high-speed winds and turbulent waters that can prove fatal to even the most seasoned swimmer. On top of this, they are some of the most isolated working locations on the planet – rescue can take up to several hours to arrive, even if an incident is reported immediately. This is why impeccable and robust fire and gas detection is a necessity to ensure safety of the workers and their expensive cargo: it is also these hostile conditions that render conventional detection almost useless.
