Camero-Tech saves lives in Turkey earthquake

Camero-Tech – a member of the SK Group (a holding company founded by Samy Katsav) and a pioneer in the design and manufacture of pulse-based UWB micro-power radar ‘Through Wall Imaging’ systems – has supplied its Xaver 400 and Xaver 100 systems to the search and rescue expedition sent by the IDF Home Front Command SAR Unit to the disaster area in Turkey. The kit contains two Camero Xaver TM 100 systems, a Xaver TM 400, a XaverNetTM and various rescue accessories – including a variety of straps, holding devices, and more – that can be used in a variety of situations. The XaverTM 100 is a compact, handheld detector and tracker that provides reliable primary information on the existence of live objects. It facilitates faster go/ no-go decision-making when searching in major disaster areas, such as collapsed buildings with many rooms and voids. The XaverTM 400 is a compact radar-based device that provides accurate, real-time, mission-critical information on live and static objects, indicating their location within a structure. It also provides simultaneous detection of static and moving objects. The XaverNetTM is a remote wireless ToughPad that simultaneously controls and monitors up to four XaverTM systems, enabling real-time visual data and data recording/ playback in multiple locations within the disaster area. NSI appoints new Chief Executive

The National Security Inspectorate (NSI) has announced Richard Fogelman as its new Chief Executive effective Wednesday 1 March 2023. Richard Jenkins is due to leave the Inspectorate after leading it for the last nine years. Richard Fogelman has more than 15 years management experience, including almost a decade as CEO of a leading UK charity. Richard has a law degree and experience in London’s financial markets, having worked at numerous banks and financial firms, before embarking in the commercial world of property operations and management. Most recently, he was CEO of Grief Encounter, a national charity supporting bereaved young people. During his time there, he restructured the business, established a national helpline serving over 10,000 callers annually and has driven revenue growth from £480k in 2013 to £3.01m in 2021. Pierce secures order from the City of Madison WI Fire Department

Pierce Manufacturing, an Oshkosh Corporation company, have announced it has secured a purchase order from the City of Madison Fire Department in Wisconsin for a Pierce Volterra electric pumper. The purchase order agreement follows an 18-month placement of a Pierce Volterra pumper at the department’s busiest station, Station No. 8, making it the first electric fire truck in service in North America. The City of Madison Fire Department was one of three fire departments across the United States to collaborate and provide daily operational data to assist with the final development, evaluation, and on-highway certification processes. Through reduced diesel fuel usage, the pumper is expected to eliminate over 31.8 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from being emitted into the environment every year,” said Mayor Rhodes-Conway. “The Pierce Volterra electric fire truck not only gives us confidence our fire department will have the most advanced equipment to support their needs, but also drives environmental change as we take meaningful action toward building a clean energy economy.” The City of Madison Fire Department is made up of 14 fire stations serving an area of nearly 100 square miles and a population of over 250,000. Survitec pre-inspection for dry dock safety

Global Survival Technology solutions provider Survitec has introduced a new, formalised pre-inspection solution as part of its dry dock safety service to help ship owners and managers optimise and expedite dry docking schedules. As part of Survitec’s fully managed, “safety-first” dry docking solution, the pre-inspection service is designed to support the servicing and inspection of all onboard safety and lifesaving equipment. A qualified service technician boards the ship during normal port operations to assess and verify the scope of work, with the added benefit of helping to ensure dry dockings don’t overrun and ships leave on time, fully certified and within budget. “It smooths the entire dry docking process,” said Jan-Oskar Lid, Technical Sales Manager, Survitec. “Advance planning pays dividends in terms of efficiency and transparency for owners and operators to plan and budget accordingly with a full scope of work planned and ready before the vessel enters dry dock. “A pre-inspection does not have to take place in the same yard or location where the dry dock will take place. This is the advantage of our global service station network.” As part of the service, Survitec teams review and set out a schedule of works in line with regulatory requirements. This includes collating and reviewing the necessary safety certificates and documentation and liaising with the shipyard and suppliers to expedite parts, procurement and equipment servicing. An additional benefit is that it can also reduce the risk of any unexpected work cropping up during dry docking that could lead to unplanned delays, additional cost and lost revenue. “The value of a pre-inspection call or visit has been demonstrated time and again over our many years’ experience of safety servicing,” explained Lid. “Our trained technicians can identify issues that the ship owner or manager may not have yet recognised or may have been misdiagnosed. For example, one customer ordered a gas top-up for a CO2 low pressure system. During a preparatory call, we were able to identify an underlying issue with the tank and arrange the necessary repairs. If this issue had not been identified until the time of service, the vessel could have been left off hire for longer, causing costly delays to their operating schedule.” Flexibility is a key benefit of the Survitec dry dock safety service. Referring to one project where LNG vessels were initially scheduled to dry dock in Qatar, Lid said: “At the last minute, the customer notified us that two of the vessels would be shifted to Singapore. This was not a problem for us as we have the network and resources to accommodate the change of plan.” Finn Lende-Harung, Commercial Director – Fire, explained: “With 100+ years’ experience as an OEM, we are fully conversant with IMO, Flag, Class and brand requirements for the different equipment and service intervals. IDTechEx Discuss Solutions for Electric Vehicle Fires

Despite component shortages and rising material prices, Electric vehicles (EVs) have continued their strong growth throughout 2022, with sales looking to be increased by over 60% compared with the previous year. One factor that is difficult to overlook is vehicle fire safety. In addition to the major automotive recalls seen in 2020 and 2021 for GM, Hyundai, Ford, and others, 2022 also highlighted issues in other vehicle segments. RATP (Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens) had to recall 149 electric buses from BlueBus and India saw increasing numbers of electric scooter fires forcing regulation changes (more on that later). While vehicle fires with any drivetrain are rare, it is important to provide protection for vehicle owners/occupants by preventing a fire from propagating outside the battery pack or at least delaying it for as long as possible. A key method for achieving this is by applying passive fire protection materials. These are materials that have a strong resistance to fire for as long as possible. These can be applied in several locations. A traditional EV battery consists of many battery cells that are combined to form a module; in turn, these are combined inside the battery enclosure to form a pack. This gives several opportunities for the application of fire protection materials. Materials can be applied around the pack, inside the enclosure, beneath the lid, around the modules, and between the cells. Many manufacturers will use a combination of options to provide the best protection possible. Cell-To-Pack and Improving Packing Efficiency However, a key trend in the EV battery industry is towards greater packing efficiency, with the aim of improving energy density while reducing complexity and cost. Simply put, having more of the battery taken up by the cells rather than all of the components that do not actually store energy. In fact, IDTechEx research has found that battery materials, not including the cells, have reduced by over 50% since 2015. This comes from more optimized material use and packaging strategies. A key step change here is in cell-to-pack designs. In a cell-to-pack design, the modular structure is removed and all of the cells are packed directly together to form the pack. This reduces the number of components, leading to simpler manufacturing and reduced costs. This approach has been deployed by players such as BYD, CATL, Tesla, and several others, with more planning deployment in the future. Fire Protection in Cell-To-Pack While this strategy is certainly simpler, one might ask how this impacts fire safety. There are no longer groups of cells separated from each other; if one cell goes into thermal runaway, what stops it propagating across the entire pack? Materials can still be applied beneath the lid or coat the enclosure, but if all of the cells have entered thermal runaway, these options will have a much harder time preventing a fire from escaping the pack. The dream goal for battery designers is to have a material that can sit between the cells and stop a thermal runaway event from propagating from one cell to another. Generally speaking, to do this, it needs a low thermal conductivity and strong flame resistance. This is easier said than done when also trying to improve energy density and reduce costs. A key methodology to achieving this is by replacing old functional materials with ones that can carry out that function while also providing fire protection. Another key concern for some incumbent technologies is material handling; materials like mica or ceramic blankets can be brittle or dusty. So, the materials need to be thermally insulating, electrically insulating, lightweight, conformable, easy to work with, low cost and provide fire protection. This sounds like a tall order, but several options are becoming available. Aerogels have been gaining in popularity, and while these have also had issues with handling in the past, material suppliers are encapsulating them to avoid some of the concerns. IDTechEx have also seen the adoption of encapsulating foams that can be easily dispensed, expand in place, and help provide structure around the cells in addition to the properties above. “Drop-in” replacements are another option, for example, compression pads with fire protection additives to replace the compression pads typically used between pouch cells. Finally, there are even more early-stage alternatives, such as cell holders made from intumescent materials. This would provide propagation protection while also providing a structural framework for the cells. How Will Safety Regulations Contribute? Regulation is often a key driver for safety. China was an early adopter of thermal runaway-specific regulations with its 5-minute rule for warning vehicle occupants of a thermal event. A formal mandate similar to this is yet to be applied in other regions, but OEMs have started targeting this or more stringent requirements in their designs to pre-empt future regulations and improve overall safety. India’s EV market had a key safety transition in 2022. The governing bodies set adjustments (to take place from October 2022) to the current standards. In addition to only using approved cells, battery design features like inter-cell spacing are also stated. The key missing factor in any regulation at the moment is a requirement to prevent cell-to-cell thermal propagation. The regulations focus on fire leaving the pack, which ultimately is the key concern for human safety. However, if regulation was imposed to require cell-to-cell or even module-to-module propagation, this could help save costs for the OEM or vehicle owner by protecting the rest of the expensive battery cells and pack, and mean that pack-level materials have an easier job preventing further fire. This would present a huge opportunity for materials suppliers that can meet all of the requirements set out above. With the increased focus on fire safety and the rapidly growing EV market, IDTechEx is predicting a 13-fold growth in the yearly demand for fire protection materials in 2033 compared with 2022. Given the already large EV market, this translates to large volumes of material required over the next decade. New Aerial Firefighting Trade Association Launched

Aerial firefighting operators have joined together to form the first industry association dedicated to serving and fostering safety and standardisation in the aerial firefighting community. The United Aerial Firefighters Association (UAFA) was founded at the end of 2022 as a non-profit association with the goal of informing policymakers and legislators about important issues concerning the increasingly critical nature of aerial wildland firefighting.  UAFA exists to bring together industry experts for collaboration and to provide a unified voice for the industry when speaking to state and federal stakeholders, fire agencies, and the public about wildfires and issues impacting the aerial firefighting community.  The association is headquartered in Washington, DC, ensuring that members have a significant presence on Capitol Hill and at federal agencies.  “We’ve seen tremendous change occur in wildland fire aviation over the last twenty years,” says John Gould, President and CEO of 10 Tanker Air Carrier, one of the founding members of the UAFA. “As we look ahead, these challenges will only become more significant.  While individual organizations within the industry will always be competitive, we believe the collective expertise represented within UAFA membership will help to ensure our industry continues to grow with the innovation, safety, and standardization necessary to deliver the best service possible to our customers.”    Gould serves as the inaugural President for the UAFA Board of Directors. It is a way of safeguarding by preparing for the worst to allow for the best outcomes in a fire event.   What person, living or dead, would you like to meet and why?   I would like to meet Stephen Fry because he is witty, sassy and I think we could have some good discussions about topical news, and I would also like to ask about the Kakapo incident! (if you don’t know it, Google it – it’s worth it)   If you could talk to your younger self, what would you say?   I would tell myself that failure can be a good thing; don’t be afraid of making mistakes as they are opportunities to learn and grow as a person. Not knowing your own limits is scarier than pushing them.   Describe a funny thing that happened to you recently?   I was walking my elderly dachshund into town to meet a friend for coffee, and I was “borrowed” for an impromptu photoshoot with Seb the sausage dog outside of a car showroom! What three traits define you?   Tenacious – once I set my sights on something, I don’t give up!  Positive – not something I would have always described myself as, but now I try and see the upsides to everything where I can  Individual – I’m not afraid of showing my style (my hair changes colour multiple times a year – currently rocking the green!)  To read the rest of this feature, see our latest issue here.
