Fire Buyer takes a look at the Women in Fire conference day taking place at FDIC International 2023. What to expect, and what sessions to look out for  Women in Fire Conference is back again at FDIC International. This conference will begin with an Opening Ceremony, followed by a lineup of educational classes that provide training, support and advocacy for women in the fire service.  Last year we caught up with Eric Schlett, Event Director for FDIC International, where he spoke about the Women in Fire conference, stating: “Returning in 2023 is Women in Fire for their one-day conference. This conference will begin with an opening ceremony which will take a look at what we know about women’s health in the fire service, including recent and emerging topics such as reproductive health, behavioural health, and modifiable risk factors among this population. Following that will be a line-up of educational classes that provide training, support and advocacy for women in the fire service.”  Taking place on Monday, April 24, 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM will be the keynote session for Women in Fire featuring Mira Leinonen, Senior Fire Officer for Regional State Administrative Agency, Southern Finland. Mira Leinonen graduated from Lappeenranta Technical University in 2006 with a Master of Science and from the Rescue College in 2010. She is a senior officer for a state administrative state agency in Southern Finland and is in charge of supervising eight fire departments. Leinonen is also a chairperson for a network for women in fire and rescue services in Finland. Since 2015, she has been a chairperson for the international association CTIF’s Women in Fire and Rescue Services commission. CTIF has 42 member countries worldwide.    The rest of the day will be filled with an action-packed conference agenda bringing women in fire together from all around the world. Some notable sessions include the following:  The morning of the event will hear from Amy Hanifan, President Operations Chief, McMinnville Fire Department who will be exploring health and wellness for women in the fire service. The number of women in the fire service has increased over time, yet there has been very little data regarding their health, safety, and wellness. To establish an inclusive, healthy fire service, we must consider the vast number of factors that affect the crews. Cardiac health is among the top causes of fatalities in firefighter line-of-duty deaths and the second leading cause for female firefighters. Heart health is important.   Resources based on the NVFC Heart Healthy campaign provide a well-rounded approach to preventive cardiac health. There is still much need for information about cancer types, occurrence rates, and prevention. The Women’s Biomonitoring Collaborative provides new information based on recent studies. Efforts include informative, attention-grabbing resources meant to inspire firefighters about the importance of post-incident decon.   Behavioural and mental health has been receiving a great amount of attention in the fire service. Attendees will be presented with information and resources regarding the impacts of culture, harassment and bullying, mental health, and suicide among women in the fire service. Included are resources for pregnant firefighters along with information about risks, impacts, and best practices. This class is based on the USFA study ‘Emerging Issues for Women in the Fire Service.’ It has been updated with resources from a FEMA-funded project partnered with Women in Fire and the Center for Fire, Rescue & EMS Health Research.  Following this opening session, Bobbie Scopa, Deputy Director for Fire Operations at the US Forest Service, Oregon, will be exploring Leadership and Diversity. Achieving an efficient, fun, and diverse workplace requires a special kind of leadership. Our typical leadership training doesn’t often talk about diversity. And if we only rely on quotas, mandatory training, and discipline, we will never meet our hopes for a diverse and harmonious company crew and department.   Through entertaining stories based on 45 years in the fire service, the instructor shares experiences of a long and successful fire career from being a tailboard firefighter to an assignment in Washington, D.C. It’s important for firefighters, company officers, and chiefs to think about their behaviour as it relates to diversity in the workplace. If women are the only advocates for women and minorities are the only advocates for racial minorities, we will never achieve our need for a more diverse workplace. Dear Firefighters and First Responders,    FDIC International is excited to welcome the fire and rescue industry back to Indianapolis, April 24-29, 2023!  As North America’s leading firefighter conference, FDIC International drew over 30,000 industry professionals in 2022, nearly one-third held an EMS-related title, and 2023 is expected to be an even larger event that cannot be missed.  The expansive conference program offers over 300 tried and true classes covering updated content on important topics and new areas of interest from the world’s most renowned fire and EMS instructors, and more EMS credit hours than ever before! New this year, attendees will have access to over 230 hours of continuing education accredited by CAPCE.    The week of training begins with two days of hands-on training (H.O.T.) evolutions and pre-conference workshops followed by three days of classroom sessions, covering the latest technology and techniques in the fire service. Back again is Women in Fire for their one-day conference on Monday, April 25.   In addition to Women in Fire, we are excited to be joined by several core groups in training the fire services for education, meetings, and events: FESHE, North American Training Directors and ISFSI, to name a few.   The learning continues on the exhibit floor spanning the Indiana Convention Center, Lucas Oil Stadium and the Outdoor Exhibits & Demo Area, giving attendees access to explore nearly 800 vendors to vet their products and services while creating lasting and business relationships with these leading manufacturers.    There are plenty of new and exciting spots to check out! The Lucas Oil Stadium (LOS) Experience is being introduced this year and will include the Fire Rescue Station of the Future, a full-scale fire station replica featuring products and innovations for you to interact with; as well as IGNITE, an exhibiting destination for start-ups and small businesses owned by emergency service entrepreneurs who are making their debut at FDIC. While there don’t forget to visit FDIC’s “Central Park” for a myriad of attendee experiences.  And for decision-maker with specific sourcing needs, we want to help them make the most of their time with the following programs. The Metro Officers Innovation Briefing puts innovation at the forefront as Officers from major metropolitan areas share experiences, perspectives and ideas in a peer-to-peer setting. Our free MATCH! program allows attendees to preschedule one-to-one meetings with exhibitors who fit their current sourcing needs. And the newly-launched JEMS Innovation Summit is where EMS leaders from all sectors will come together to share the latest in innovations and collaborations.   I would be remiss if I did not mention the passing of our longtime editor in chief of Fire Engineering and Educational Director for FDIC, and my friend, Chief (Ret.) Bobby Halton, who will be recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Opening Ceremony. We will be celebrating his life and legacy all week, but please join us for a special service on Wednesday at 5:30 PM, “After Hours: A Bobby Halton Tribute”. Before his passing in December, Halton had served as editor for the last 18 years and helped build FDIC into the largest fire service educational conference in the world.  As always, I want to personally thank the City of Indianapolis and most especially Chief Ernest Malone and the Indianapolis Fire Department for their continued support and hospitality. As I assume, most of you, like us here at Fire Buyer, attended FDIC International last year in 2022 in co-location with JEMS Conference & Expo. Given the standard of the show last year, we can only imagine what 2023 holds in store for attendees at FDIC.   Last year we saw over 30,000 registered fire industry professionals walking the show, 40% of which hadn’t attended the year before, and over 60% of who had purchasing decisions for their department, which is an impressive statistic. Euralarm publish guidance document

The Extinguishing Section of Euralarm has published an updated version of the guidance document on the important aspects relating to the periodic inspection of containers used in fixed gaseous fire extinguishing systems. The guidance note is intended to identify some critical areas that are often not fully understood and does not prescribe the full processes involved in the testing or the physical handling of the containers. There is currently some confusion on when fire extinguishing agent containers are required to be submitted for periodic testing under the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), the Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive (TPED) and Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR), as stated in the relevant Standards. This Euralarm guidance gives recommendations on how fire extinguishing system containers should be treated. The Euralarm document addresses the issues related to the importance of procedures for periodic testing and subsequent refilling of the containers. The document guides the reader to avoid serious safety issues of hydrostatic testing. Aspects that are covered in the guidance note are moisture control, the reuse of container valves and the recertification of containers. A useful checklist is part of the document. The checklist covers important steps to ensure that the safety of containers is maintained during periodic inspection processes and during the filling afterwards. Industry partners support tornado-ravaged communities

Turtle Plastics, Sunbelt Fire and Darley came together to help in the aftermath of a series of devastating tornadoes that swept through western and central Mississippi on the evening of March 24, 2023. An EF4 tornado, traveling almost 60 miles and lasting more than an hour, tore through the town of Rolling Fork, a community of less than 2,000 people, leaving complete devastation in its wake. The three companies raised the money to deliver 23 pallets of Darley Safe Water Boxes (5,000 gallons total) to the United Way in Vicksburg, MS. After the tornado, United Way of West Central Mississippi opened their doors to act as a logistics and disbursement center for affected communities as most, if not all, of the town’s infrastructure was gone. Members of the community transport the goods in their personal vehicles to Rolling Fork several times a week. “Many corporations such as yours, have been a godsend with providing the many needs for the affected area,” said Patty Montague of United Way, Vicksburg. “Helping those in need is a core value in our company.  Natural disasters like this tornado can be extremely destructive and it is our duty to help those in need,” said Paul Darley, CEO, president and chairman of Darley. “We are grateful to have trusted partners like Turtle Plastics, Sunbelt Fire and United Way to help get safe water to those in need across Mississippi.” The theme of caring for others was echoed by Liz Paintiff, president of Turtle Plastics, who said, “It is our pleasure to answer the need when our friends at Darley reach out for assistance. Part of our mission statement at Turtle Plastics is ‘creating a spirit of peace, love and caring for the environment, our employees and our community.’” Sunbelt Fire is a family-owned and operated company based in Fairhope, AL. Slade McLendon, CEO and president commented, “We are grateful to have served the first responders of Mississippi for 40 years, and we are grateful to be able to assist them and their communities now.   Today,WindowMaster, the Danish CleanTech company and one of the world’s leading natural ventilation and façade automation specialists, unveils the latest addition to its growing portfolio of innovative smoke and heat ventilation solutions. Amid a heightened focus on combining optimum indoor air quality with stringent fire safety protocol, WindowMaster’s team of experts have developed a new compact smoke control panel, WSC 104, effectively combining smoke extraction with comfort ventilation. Officially launched at the illustrious BAU 2023 in Munich, the world’s leading trade expo for architecture, materials, and systems, this new digital enhancement will take the place of WindowMaster’s current model, WSC 204, as a standard product in its catalogue. Integral to WSC 104’s development is the protection of occupants and visitors in commercial interiors. In the event of a potential fire, it is vital to ventilate the toxic smoke and gases out of the building, while simultaneously enabling fresh air to enter the interior. A method that’s conventionally achieved by allowing fresh air to enter through lower building openings to encourage the smoke to escape through the roof, upper vents and windows. Evolving building regulations ramping up throughout 2023, notably around fire safety and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, have placed a heightened focus on Responsible Persons. With accountability now broadened – there is a binding obligation for businesses and asset owners to take immediate action in prioritising occupant safety across the board. Here, WindowMaster’s WSC 104 has been established to help support compliance and seamlessly automate this process. The new smoke control panel can connect to either ±24V DC standard motors or motors with WindowMaster’s MotorLink® technology – delivering optimal smoke ventilation that preserves and protects. This neat, compact and user-friendly control panel is also suited for use in smaller interiors and other parts of a building, such as stairwells, which will prove vital in aiding in the safe escape of occupants in the event of an emergency. Furthermore, the new model has 3-wire multifunction technology that can be readily integrated into any existing cable network when retrofitting former systems. As a result, the overall process of retrofitting commercial spaces with modern technology will prove to be a simple task for engineers.
