Kidde Europe Launches its Cause for Alarm

Kidde Europe, provider of fire safety for more than 100 years, is proud to launch its Cause for Alarm campaign. This campaign was created in response to the statistics that fatal house fires disproportionately affect some communities more than others. Alarmingly, children under the age of five are at the greatest risk of fire-related deaths, making up almost 50% of fire deaths among children aged 16 and under. Kidde is a part of Carrier Global Corporation, provider of intelligent climate and energy solutions. This Fire Safety Week, Kidde Europe is determined to bring this critical issue to the forefront, helping to educate and support families in safeguarding their homes and their loved ones. Kidde recognises the need for a creative approach to engage and educate children and their families. To address this, Kidde has introduced the Cause For Alarm jingle, a catchy tune that helps children and parents remember what to do when a fire alarm sounds – “Beeps that last, Get out fast.” ‘‘We want to make fire safety a top priority in every household and keep children safe in their homes”, said Rebecca Cackett, European Channel Marketing Manager, at Kidde. “With the right fire safety education and home safety products, we can help prevent devastating fatalities. We are calling on everyone to work together to help spread this message and keep our children and loved ones safe.’’ This campaign emphasises the importance of selecting the right fire safety products and creating – and importantly practising – a family escape plan, where children understand what to do if they hear an alarm sound, as these are fundamental in the battle against fire hazards. Despite a considerable percentage of households owning functional smoke alarms, a concerning 21% of those surveyed admitted to never testing them. Fires can spread rapidly, leaving no time to waste. Moreover, many house fires start at night, and the assumption that the smell of smoke will wake individuals is a big misconception. The smoke produced in house fires often contains toxic gases, like carbon monoxide, which can render people unconscious swiftly. This is why working smoke alarms are crucial, as they provide vital minutes for escape before a home becomes filled with smoke. Kidde Europe is committed to fire safety, which extends beyond just awareness. In the coming weeks, Kidde will be partnering with influential figures to promote the Cause for Alarm campaign, aiming to connect with audiences of all ages and backgrounds. What does ‘fire safety’ mean to you?  Risk Mitigation. Finding all sorts of fire risks throughout a facility or environment, and mitigating that risk through any number of products, systems, processes, or policies  What made you want to work in the industry?  Opportunity! Right out of grad school, I got a job with Kidde-Fenwal in Ashland, MA, which started my career mostly focused on special hazard fire suppression. We always say, once you’re in, it’s hard to get out!  If you could talk to your younger self, what would you say?  Appreciate what you earn. Earn what you want.  Describe a funny thing that happened to you recently?  Coaching 11-12 yr. old hockey players is non-stop entertainment and enjoyment! (I’m a non-parent coach for the first time in 15 years!)  What three traits define you?  Collaborative; Competitive; Balanced  What’s the most important trend you see today?  Regulatory movement limiting use of chemical gaseous agents. This will change the landscape of special hazards in the next 5-10 years.  If you weren’t in the fire industry, what would you be doing?  Realistically… some form of engineering or business leadership. In fantasy land, sports analytics and/or broadcasting…. Or perhaps some sort of sports management / leadership in the amateur or professional hockey ranks.  What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your CV?  I’m a huge fan of hard rock and metal music! I just attended the “Power Trip” music festival in Indio, CA first week of October… if you haven’t heard of it, you should definitely check it out!  What is one thing you would change in the industry if you could?  A true willingness to learn, understand and accept novel technologies for all sorts of applications.  Where do you see yourself in 5 years?  Hopefully continuing to do what I do! 10 Freeway remains closed after devastating fire

A segment of the 10 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles, spanning a mile, sustained significant damage in a weekend fire and will remain inaccessible indefinitely until necessary repairs are carried out. This closure poses considerable traffic challenges for the region, as approximately 300,000 vehicles traverse this freeway corridor on a daily basis. Caltrans is set to conclude its investigation into the fire’s origin by 6 a.m. Monday, enabling structural engineers to conduct a thorough assessment of the damage to the freeway’s columns and bridge deck. Governor Gavin Newsom, in collaboration with Mayor Karen Bass, conveyed this information during a joint news conference, emphasising the uncertainty of the repair duration until these assessments are completed. “No reason to think this will be over in a couple of days,” Bass said, as reported by the LA Times. Officials strongly advised commuters to stay at home, steer clear of the affected area, or utilise public transit during the ongoing freeway repairs. Governor Newsom declared a state of emergency on Saturday night to expedite the cleanup and repair efforts on the freeway. He emphasised that the work on the roadway would persist continuously until its reopening. Mayor Bass, on Sunday, disclosed that she had engaged in discussions with U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to explore any additional resources that might be required. The fire, reported early Saturday morning just after midnight in the 1700 block of East 14th Street, originated in a pallet yard beneath the freeway. It quickly spread to a second pallet yard, causing damage to the freeway overpass and resulting in the destruction of several vehicles, including a firetruck, as per authorities. The LA Times also reported that, on Saturday evening, Bass explained that she had “directed all city departments to immediately plan for how to address increased traffic due to this closure to best mitigate the impact on Angelenos. We will continue to urgently coordinate with our state partners to resolve this issue for not only the millions who use this freeway, but also for those who live and work in the surrounding areas.” Fire officials in Los Angeles reported that the fire prompted a response from firefighters representing 26 companies, along with the assistance of one helicopter. Their prompt efforts successfully prevented the fire from extending into adjacent commercial buildings. Additionally, heavy equipment operators were deployed to manipulate debris, facilitating firefighters in addressing isolated pockets of fire. FEU appoints Stephan Wevers as President

The Federation of European Fire Officers (FEU) has announced the appointment of its President, Stephan Wevers, for a second three-year term. This appointment took place in Zagreb, Croatia, during the 54th FEU Council meeting on 9-10 November 2023. Comprising many fire officer associations or state fire services in Europe (including the UK and Norway), FEU has at its helm a President, assisted by a management board consisting of four board members and a secretary. FEU is an independent professional body whose members are senior professionals with responsibility for the strategic management of Fire and Rescue Services and the ongoing professionalisation process. Stephan Wevers’ first term was marked by a series of serious global crises. The federation faced challenges from several catastrophic events: the global pandemic of Covid-19, the large-scale war in Ukraine, and the ever-increasing forest fires. However, President Wevers notes with pride, “FEU has been able to learn from these world crises and to exchange knowledge and skills through joint action with its members”, which is one of the pillars of the FEU program, the Exchange of Experts and Knowledge. He also managed to address global issues such as Sustainability, DEI, and Energy Transition at special seminars and jointly issue a statement on these. Under Wevers’ presidency, the other two pillars of the FEU vision, Leadership and The Voice, have developed significantly as well. An Officer Development Program was launched in spring 2022, followed up in June 2023, and registration for the 2024 edition is about to come. To be a strong voice for fire and rescue services at the European and global level, FEU focuses on being the point of contact concerning organisational, managerial, and strategic issues of fire and rescue service leadership in Europe for all parties. Wevers stresses that his second term should be one of further grow of membership: “The development of the FEU will enable it to provide a good platform for new members. All of this will lead to a broad international network, enabling the FEU to spread its values to an ever-growing group: Sharing, Inspiring and Improving”. Stantec’s award-winning Fire Flow System is being introduced to ten fire services in the Thames Valley region, helping firefighters better understand and prepare for emergencies. Fire Flow System, an innovative, GIS-based, digital tool is being made available to ten fire services in the Thames Valley region over the next year. The unique system from Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, provides emergency teams with crucial insight to help them save time and lives when responding to fires. Developed in the UK alongside Thames Water, the award-winning Fire Flow tool pairs water network information from the water company with a vast digital twin of all buildings and infrastructure in the Thames Valley region. By using a laptop, phone, or tablet, firefighters can then identify accessible fire hydrants in any given location and uncover vital details on the water they can draw to suppress a fire. The tool uses building data to calculate the required fire flows based on height, floor area, and occupational uses, and can highlight at-risk buildings based on their specifications. The insights from the Fire Flow System will allow emergency teams in the Thames Valley to establish instantly which hydrants in the area offer the best pressure and flows. This gives the fire and rescue services instant access to the best available data for planning for and responding to incidents. Based on a fire appliance’s potential location, the Fire Flow System also identifies the most efficient hydrants to use while devising the optimum routes for teams to lay their fire hoses. The tool is already in use by the London Fire Brigade and will be rolled out across ten Thames Valley fire and rescue services, including: Hertfordshire, Surrey, Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Royal Berkshire, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Buckinghamshire, Wiltshire, Kent, and Essex. The combined services protect more than ten million people across the south of England. “In a fire, we know that every second counts. The time saved by using the Fire Flow System will undoubtedly lead to better and more efficient responses to emergency situations across the Thames Valley region,” says Michael Morrisroe, technical director, Stantec. “By being more prepared for incidents with resources and data, fire crews can ultimately protect more properties, and save more lives.” “At Stantec, we provide sector leading solutions to the entire built environment,” added Morrisroe. “Bringing different industries together to address our communities’ biggest challenges is a fundamental part of who we are. E-Bike fire safety recommendations

The Bicycle Association (BA) and the Association of Cycle Traders (ACT) have released a joint response to the legislation proposed by Electrical Safety First (ESF) on e-bike fire safety, which calls for third-party certification for e-bike and e-scooter batteries. BA technical and policy director Peter Eland said that the organisation and “all responsible companies in the UK cycle industry very much share Electrical Safety First’s urgent focus on public safety,” and hopes that the Government, “acts with all possible speed to address the root causes of the recent rise in e-scooter and e-bike fires.” However, Eland said that while part of the solution may be introducing mandatory third-party testing, “it must run alongside much stricter enforcement of product safety for products supplied to UK consumers direct from overseas sellers, often via online marketplaces. “This has been identified by the Fire and Rescue services as a key area of concern for these lithium fires. Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service Selects Motorola

Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service (FRS) has selected Motorola Solutions’ command centre technology, including Control Room Solution (CRS), to strengthen the service’s call handling and emergency dispatch. The solution will help to increase the speed, effectiveness and resilience of Leicestershire FRS’s incident response to support frontline and community safety. Ongoing software maintenance will help ensure the critical system remains current. Serving a population of over one million people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, Leicestershire FRS manages around 15,000 calls and attends 8,000 emergency incidents on average per year. The service responds to a wide range of emergency situations, from fires, to road traffic collisions and search and rescue missions, whilst also providing community safety and fire prevention services. “Our control room is integral to our emergency response capabilities. It is the first point of contact in any emergency situation and acts as the ‘eyes and ears’ for our teams,” said Callum Faint, chief fire and rescue officer, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service. “Emergency call handlers operate in fast moving and uncertain environments. They need to be able to gather vital information from emergency calls and quickly relay the details to response teams to help ensure the safety of frontline personnel as they work to protect communities.” Motorola Solutions’ CRS integrates the control room’s communications into a single intuitive system, accelerating response times and improving operational efficiency. The hosted solution enables the control room to build a clear picture of events from multiple data sources, including real-time data from devices in the field, and provides secure bulk storage for media assets. Lionel Caillat, Vice President and General Manager of Commercial Fire, EMEA, Honeywell Building Technologies explores emerging technologies in the fire safety space  In this Innovator interview, Rebecca Spayne, Managing Editor for Fire Buyer is joined by Lionel Caillat, Vice President and General Manager of Commercial Fire, EMEA for Honeywell Building Technologies.  Could you give us a little background into who Honeywell is and the role you play in contributing to the fire industry?  Certainly. First, it’s nice to meet you, Rebecca, and thank you for having me. Honeywell is indeed a large company. When it comes to fire detection, Honeywell stands as one of the key global leaders, and we market through various brands in Europe. These are brands like Gent, Esser, Notifier, and we’ve been in this sector for many years.  How does Honeywell view this shift in the landscape of early fire detection and prevention in the UK?  Yes, it aligns very well with our vision. Our aim is to transition from fire detection to fire prevention, and the route to achieve this is by detecting fires as early as possible. With the new smokeless smoke detector technology, we can even detect conditions conducive to a fire before the fire actually ignites, preventing its occurrence. This aligns perfectly with our vision. We’ve introduced two main technologies for early fire detection. One, which we might discuss further, revolves around aspirating technology. There’s also a recent innovation specifically for lithium-ion battery fire risks, which detects the risk of a fire before it starts.  In what types of environments are these technologies typically employed?  Our fire detection solutions are designed for buildings. So, essentially, any environment within buildings, ranging from small rooms to large halls and warehouses, is our domain. These solutions work effectively in all these settings.  Could you elaborate on the specifics of the technology behind these advanced detectors and how they might differ from traditional smoke alarms?  Certainly. With traditional smoke alarms, you’d have a smoke detector typically on the ceiling, waiting for smoke to fill the space and rise to be detected. There’s a lag between the fire starting, the smoke forming, and then gradually reaching the smoke detector. The two new technologies I alluded to earlier work differently. The first, aspirating technology, samples the air within the room to detect early signs of smoke, providing a much faster reaction time. You don’t have to wait for the smoke to rise. The other technology, specific to lithium-ion batteries, detects the off-gassing of these batteries before a fire ignites. It identifies the chemical reactions within the battery that indicate an impending fire risk, allowing preventative actions to be taken.  How are integrated systems contributing to a more comprehensive solution for buildings and businesses?  That’s a crucial area of our development. When you examine buildings, they typically house different systems. There’s the fire detection system, the building management system overseeing comfort and energy expenditure, and often, a security system too. Integrating these systems provides several benefits. Firstly, it offers users a comprehensive view of the building’s status. As we transition from fire detection to prevention, the combined data from these systems can be used to identify conditions conducive to fires even before they arise. For instance, one might detect anomalies in the HVAC system, prompting a preliminary alarm to assess fire risk. This integration not only offers convenience but ensures compliance by providing all system data on a singular dashboard. Moreover, it presents intriguing possibilities in fire prevention.  How does the integration of these diverse systems enhance safety protocols and optimise operations for building users?  A significant advantage is ensuring compliance and the operational integrity of all systems. With fire detection, many countries have mandates on maintenance and regular sensor testing. Traditionally, compliance was demonstrated using analogue methods like paperwork. However, by converging these systems under one supervisory framework, we now have a digital record of all maintenance activities. This not only makes things more streamlined but also offers the end user a robust method to prove that all sensors are periodically tested and comply with the latest standards.  Are there other emerging trends in fire protection technology that businesses should be cognisant of?  We’re introducing another innovation in the UK in the forthcoming weeks: the industry’s first self-testing sensor. This is quite groundbreaking. Firstly, it drastically cuts down maintenance time. Rather than spending hours testing each sensor individually in a building, this process can now be completed within minutes. From a compliance perspective, it’s invaluable. Each sensor is self-tested, producing its own minuscule amount of smoke and verifying its functionality. Given challenges like the current shortage of skilled labour, such solutions are invaluable.
