FPA Creates Fire Testing Method for External Cladding

The Fire Protection Association (FPA), in collaboration with insurers, the University of Central Lancashire, and expert consultants, has introduced RISC 501: a new method for testing and assessing external cladding systems. This initiative, part of the RISCAuthority’s annual research, responds to the rising incidents of large cladding system fires since 1990 and aims to evaluate the fire safety performance of non-loadbearing external cladding systems. RISC 501, which is freely downloadable, addresses several limitations of the current UK compliance methods (BS 8414 test method and BR 135 assessment criteria) for combustible cladding systems on high-rise buildings. These limitations include issues with fuel source appropriateness, test construction, construction detailing, assessment criteria, and transparency of test results. The new method sets stricter construction and temperature criteria, introduces mechanical performance and gas sampling criteria, and mandates public publication of all test results. This approach not only meets basic life safety standards but also aims at ensuring resilient systems to prevent vertical fire spread. The FPA’s Technical Director, George Edwardes has been at the forefront of the research: “There have been concerns around large scale cladding testing ever since its inception in the UK. “Conducting a thorough research project from an insurer’s perspective identified the areas that need improving and resulted in the development of a robust test method that reflects the built environment; a method that is appropriate for not just the minimum life safety requirement, but also for property protection. “I look forward to working with industry to conduct RISC 501 testing, which will help ensure people have homes to return to after the unfortunate event of a fire. The FPA is continuously seeking ways to improve building resilience and we actively welcome collaboration for future research.” Chris Miles, Commercial Director at the FPA added: “RISC 501 offers significant improvements when compared with the current performance-based route to compliance. Teledyne FLIR Releases New 80° Wide-Angle Thermal Lens and Port Adapter for FLIR Thermal Cameras

Teledyne FLIR has introduced a new 80° lens with an ultra-wide field of view, designed to enable maintenance managers, engineers, and mechanical technicians to keep an eye on assets in a large target area for continuous monitoring, condition monitoring, and early intervention of developing faults. The 80° lens is compatible with FLIR A400/500/700 Image Streaming and Smart Sensor fixed-mount thermal cameras, A500f/A700f Advanced Smart Sensor cameras, and FLIR E76, E86, E96, T530, T540, T560, T840, and T865 portable camera families. In fixed-mount applications such as coal and fertilizer pile monitoring, this ultra wide-angle lens makes it possible to install fewer thermal cameras while keeping all assets in the cameras’ field of view. In spaces with large inspection targets, such as a furnace, tank, roof or wall, the wide-angle lens can help an inspector capture more of the scene in one image for improved efficiency. In condition monitoring applications including building, manufacturing, and power plant environments, a handheld FLIR thermal camera paired with the 80° lens allows users to easily inspect in tight, restricted spaces with limited viewing angles. For example, high-voltage electrical cabinets are frequently fitted with infrared windows, which allow inspectors to quickly inspect components without opening the panel to minimize arc flash risk. Space between the IR window and the electrical components is typically limited. With the 80° lens, inspectors can capture all the components in one image. Some electrical cabinets are fitted with “port”-type devices. FLIR has launched a port adapter that simply attaches to the 80° lens, making inspection through third-party ports fast and simple. “The ability to capture better imagery means organizations can make better, more informed decisions when identifying thermal anomalies in industrial equipment and building envelopes,” said Rob Milner, Business Development Director, Teledyne FLIR. “With more data captured in a single scene, inspectors can reduce the amount of time needed for the inspection and for post-inspection processing and reporting. Furthermore, inspectors will enjoy greater flexibility to do more types of inspections with their existing thermal camera systems.” The wide-angle lens also features a lightweight, compact design that is just 40 mm longer than the standard lenses across all compatible thermal camera families. Euralarm co-signs Manifesto Keeping EU citizens fire safe in all buildings

Euralarm is one of the co-signers of the Manifesto Keeping EU citizens fire safe in all buildings. The undersigned organizations, representing the European fire safety sector, call for the European institutions to prioritize fire safety in buildings and to develop and promote a consistent strategy with Member States for the fire safety of all people who live and work in buildings. The co-signatories do not want to challenge the principle of subsidiarity in the domain of building codes: Member States should therefore remain free to design their fire safety regulations by considering the local specificities in terms of building design solutions, materials, use patterns and climate. However, the undersigning parties believe that action on fire safety in buildings goes beyond building codes. The European Union can support Member States by having a coordinating role on fire safety to realise its objectives related to its shared and supporting competences in the fields of tourism, energy, environment, human health, and consumer protection. First third-party tested solution to stop thermal runaway

Fike Corp., a global manufacturer and supplier of industrial hazard protection, has announced the discovery and development of Fike Blue, the world’s first patented and third-party tested solution to stop thermal runaway. Thermal runaway is an unpredictable fire hazard experienced by lithium batteries within energy storage systems. The elevated temperatures of a malfunctioning bat-tery cell often cause adjacent cells to also undergo thermal runaway, creating an extremely dangerous fire and explosion hazard. Fike’s years of testing and collaboration have proven that the various protection methods currently used in these applications such as water and chemical agents may indeed suppress lithium battery fires but they do little to stop the root cause of the fire itself, thermal runaway. This results in battery cells that continue to produce dangerous offgas and may continue to burn and even reignite the explosive atmosphere. Fike Blue has been successfully tested internally at Fike’s Remote Testing Facility in Blue Springs, Missouri, and by third-party testing organisations, including CSA (Canadian Standards Association) in a UL-9540A test. Omri Tayyara, Director of Mechanical Engineering at Jule, observed CSA’s testing of Fike Blue: “We were astounded by its performance. Fike Blue cooled our internal module temperatures from several hundred degrees celsius to under 100°C and prevented cascading thermal runaway–a true engineering break-through. It was extremely impressive to watch, and the whole thing was done in less than 10 minutes.” Fike Blue facts: Fully submerses the cells and absorbs the intense exothermic heat without breaking down due to a boiling point of more than 400°C. Uses exponentially less liquid than the water required by sprinklers and especially by fire fighters, resulting in far less runoff into the surrounding environment. Does not fall under the family of PFAS, many of which are currently under investigation around the world. Is stored as a pressurised liquid and discharged as a liquid. Is far less conductive than water and has never shorted the cells. May be stored for at least five years at 25°C without formation of precipitates or sediment. ASFP announces the 2023 Passive Fire Protection Awards

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection has announced the shortlist for its 2023 Passive Fire Protection Awards, with the winners due to be announced on 23 November at the Association’s Awards Dinner at the Leonardo Royal Hotel in London. As well as showcasing the award winners, the event will feature special guest speaker, comedian Hal Crutten. Each award recognises excellence within the passive fire protection industry, at company and individual level. Shortlisted companies for each award include: ASFP Installation of the Year: Firesafe Installations: for its £11m fire protection installation at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. The project involved many engineering judgments, as well as the inspection, testing and certification of previously installed but uncertified fire seals. Firesafe divided the works into 170 separate zones to avoid further uncertified works. Coopers Fire: for its work in the Great Mosque of Mecca, Mataf Tunnels, installing a series of automated smoke curtains to separate vehicular access from pedestrian access. The project included the longest smoke curtains ever installed by Coopers Fire, with the largest continual run being 927m. Oak Fire Protection: for the installation of passive fire protection systems within the Tesco Extra Store development at Woolwich, London. This included protection of the store, car parks and 260 residential apartments and communal areas. Working in extremely congested service trenches in limited space, Oak delivered high quality works to programme, despite the confined working conditions. Passive Fire Protection Innovation of the Year: The Injectaclad SS17 Timber Frame Cavity Barrier which can demonstrate 120 minutes’ integrity and insulation within multiple configurations with timber construction. Injectaclad avoids the need for the removal of large areas of the façade, when retrofitting cavity barriers. ARC Building Solutions’ TCB Square, which acts as a cavity barrier around penetrations in the external wall for timber frame construction. This addresses challenges for on-site installers and inspectors, delivering a safer, more robust passive fire protection solution for low-rise housing. The Colt EI60S Defender F2 smoke control damper which offers architects and interior designers a discreet and aesthetic smoke control damper that meets all the requirements of EN12101-8. The unique design ensures that, when closed, only a thin rectangular outline is visible in the wall. Marketing Campaign of the Year: Global HSE Solutions’ whiteboard animations which offer a unique approach to sharing fire safety knowledge and understanding across all marketing channels. FSi’s Mind the Gap campaign which aims to raise awareness of the specification and installation of façade cavity barriers to a wider audience of construction professionals. Nullifire’s multi-channel campaign to promote its FB750 coated batt and explain typical applications and testing procedures. Other award finalists include: Best Customer Service: Gunfire, Quelfire and Onetrace Training and Development of the Year: Quelfire, Checkmate Fire and Novus Property Solutions Highest Engagement of the Year: CCF, Checkmate Fire and Sherwin Williams Individual Rising Star of the Year: Nathan Hassell of Novus Property Solutions; CLM Fireproofing’s Harry Botten; and Global HSE Solutions’ Alex Griffiths. Awards will also be presented on the night for Lifetime Contribution and Academic Accomplishment, Advocate of the Year and to the Longest Serving Member companies. Operating Range and Service Life: The automatic aerosol generators (with thermal actuator) have been tested and approved for an operating range from 0°C to +54°C. Sea-Fire® AT-series aerosol generators (with manual actuator) have been tested and approved for an operating range from -40°C to +54°C. They are virtually maintenance-free and have a service life of 15 years. Scalability: Multiple units can be linked together providing extended volume protection when activated manually. Rachel Davidson Named New Director of Specialist Knowledge at BESA

Rachel Davidson has recently been named the Director of Specialist Knowledge at the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA), a move that underscores the organization’s commitment to enhancing building safety. In this role, Davidson will be concentrating on the Building Safety Act and its impact on BESA members and the wider specialist building services sector. Davidson’s extensive experience at BESA spans over 30 years, holding various positions, including Director of Certification. Her tenure is marked by a significant period as Head of Technical Schemes and Knowledge and her involvement as a board director at Piper Insurance, which provides critical illness cover for the building engineering industry. The Building Safety Act represents a major shift for the UK’s construction and engineering sectors, especially following the Grenfell Tower tragedy and subsequent public inquiry. This act is expected to initiate a fundamental cultural change within the industry. BESA CEO David Frise has highlighted the Act’s importance, noting it as a crucial change in the operational landscape for building engineering firms. Davidson’s responsibilities in her new role involve developing a thorough understanding of the Act and related secondary legislation. She will lead a team dedicated to producing guidance, advice, and tools to help contractors navigate and comply with these new regulations. Furthering this effort, BESA is forming a Building Safety Act Advisory Group, which will include industry members from diverse sectors, ensuring a comprehensive approach to addressing the concerns of the entire supply chain. Davidson recognizes the Building Safety Act as a catalyst for significant, positive changes, extending beyond safety to encompass stringent focus on competence and compliance. This change will involve strict legal requirements for digital evidence and improved record-keeping practices, impacting all areas of work. She emphasizes the need for increased collaboration among stakeholders, including clients, designers, and site partners, and points out BESA’s existing schemes and tools that assist contractors in meeting these new requirements. Rosenbauer Pioneers in 3D Visualisation Technology

A significant challenge was to streamline complex CAD construction drawings, focusing on key aspects pertinent to e-drive representations. Additionally, the models had to be optimised for the internet, ensuring they were compact enough for real-time online viewing. Rosenbauer integrated an interactive 3D viewer and AR applications to elevate the user experience. The design’s central theme was an “X-ray view” of the powertrain, emphasising function over intricate details. These AR tools enabled users to interactively explore the powertrains and energy flows on their smartphones, extending accessibility beyond the attendees of Interschutz. Looking ahead, 3D visualisation at Rosenbauer transcends beyond mere idea presentation; it’s vital for depicting fully-realised concepts in a tangible manner.
