PROFREE F3-AR is totally free from fluorinated surfactants.  PROFREE F3-AR is designed for use at low, medium and high expansion ratios.  Due to its versatility, PROFREE F3-AR can be used for the extinguishing of both hydrocarbon and polar solvents fires. At low expansion, PROFREE F3-AR is suitable for fighting all types of fires regularly encountered by civil firefighting units.  When used in high-expansion generators, PROFREE F3-AR allows the total flooding of large areas and is most suitable for the protection of hangars and chemical products storage warehouses.  PROSINTEX A  PROSINTEX A foam concentrate is formulated using synergetic surfactants, wetting agents and foam stabilisers, and is capable of providing important wetting and cooling effects on class A fires (wood, fabric, rubber, etc.).  PROSINTEX A extinguishes class A fires, also called ‘dry fires’, using a three-way action:  Cooling the seat of fire  Smothering the fire by engulfing the area and increasing the water vapour content in the atmosphere  Acting as a wetting agent to aid the penetration of water into the heart of the fire  PROSINTEX A is designed for use at very low concentrations and is therefore very economical. EOC Innovates Early Fire Detection Systems

Teledyne FLIR, part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, announced that Eye on Cloud (EOC) Tech, EOC, a Korea-based video security and thermal imaging IP camera company, will leverage the Teledyne FLIR Lepton® radiometric thermal camera module in its early fire detection (EFD) series of IP cameras. EOC is introducing the series of EFD cameras as part of its Thermal by FLIR collaboration. The HI1612-OH and HI1612-MW series cameras offer multiple resolution options for continuous monitoring of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and other critical infrastructure, security, and facility applications. With non-contact temperature measuring, the FLIR Lepton can identify elevated heat before ignition, which then triggers an alarm system. Enhancing Fire Safety in New Educational Facility

Livingstone Academy Bournemouth is a brand-new all-through school that combines excellent education with an innovative skills development programme, ensuring students from the ages of four to 18 have the skills and qualifications they need to succeed in modern life. The school has over 1800 occupants including students and staff and covers four stories of brand-new purpose-built facilities alongside historical buildings. This unique setting also includes a magistrates and coroners court, which will be preserved as part of the school site and used by the students for lectures and staging parliament style debates. Preserving this incredible educational facility as well as ensuring the safety of the next generation was of the upmost importance to the facilities management team. With a proven track record of over 40 years in design and build contracting, J&B Hopkins Ltd were the M&E contractor who engaged with Southern Fire Alarms as the fire installation team. With the opening of the school imminent, there were strict deadlines to be met so the team at Southern Fire Alarms wanted to install a system that was quick and easy to fit, as well as simple to maintain. They opted for Hochiki Europe’s ESP range of products, and in fact over 400 devices were installed at this state-of-the-art educational facility. We caught up with Naomi Fell, the contract manager at Southern Fire Alarms to find out more “We’ve worked with Hochiki products for several years across multiple projects and industries. We chose Hochiki almost every time because they know how to design and manufacture reliable and easy to fit devices. At Livingstone, as well as standard smoke detectors we also fitted multi-sensors. We needed to ensure the risk of false alarms was completely reduced; with almost 2000 people here you can imagine at full capacity what chaos a false alarm might cause. We chose the ACD Multi-Sensors from the ESP range because they are fully EN54 accredited and work across three sensing elements, heat, smoke and CO – all vital in a school environment. These were fitted across areas that had a high risk of false alarm, areas such as food technology and science laboratories. Our fit-out team also really liked the fact that there’s a common mounting base for all the ESP devices, when compared to the rest of the market, Hochiki devices really are some of the simplest to fit, but they aren’t comprised on quality. MSA and the Connected Future

Managing Editor Rebecca Spayne of Fire Buyer sits down with Gustavo Lopez, Vice President of Product Strategy at MSA to discuss the future of connected solutions in the fire industry  Can we start by giving an introduction about yourself and a brief background of MSA?  I’m Gustavo Lopez, the Vice President of Product Strategy and Pricing. Essentially, at MSA, my team and I oversee the product strategies for our entire product portfolio, which includes fire service, industrial outfits, and gas detection for the whole organisation. I’ve been with MSA since 2004 and am originally a Computer Electrical Engineer by training. Interestingly, I was the third software engineer at the company, and now we have over 100 employees working on innovative solutions.  Could you provide an insight into how connected solutions are advancing safety in both fire services and the industrial sector?  It’s quite interesting. When we embarked on this journey in the 2010s, technology had adapted and evolved significantly. We’ve capitalised on the fact that in our lives, the world is becoming smarter, consumer electronics are improving, and this technological evolution has made it far more efficient for us to integrate such technology into our connected devices and products. What this is doing is enhancing the data and awareness for both firefighters and industrial workers.  One of our constant focuses as an organisation is to prevent deaths and lost time incidents, and to keep firefighters safe so they can return to their loved ones at the end of their shift. The reality is that achieving this goal is very challenging, if not impossible, by merely providing better gear. We will certainly continue to innovate in self-contained breathing apparatus and fire helmets. There’s a lot that can be done in terms of comfort and how the equipment is worn.  However, to truly fulfil our mission, we need to provide connected solutions. We need to offer the data and insights necessary to understand the dynamics of firefighting, like how to locate a fallen firefighter or how to enable teams to work more effectively and efficiently in various difficult situations, such as a fire. It’s all about the data and insights we can provide, and technology is the key to this.”  Regarding the subject of innovation and the continuous evolution of technology, in what way do you believe that continuous innovation is driving significant change within the safety industry, especially in the context of connected solutions? Within the realm of connected solutions, we observe its impact frequently. In the fire service, for example, a notable shift is seen in incident management. When dealing with a fire in a large structure requiring deployment of firefighters in various areas, many fire departments still rely on pen and paper. The question is, how do we digitise this process and the information flow? How can we provide the incident commander with better information and insights, enabling them to more effectively direct their teams?  This is where technology plays a vital role. But it’s not just about managing the incident, which can be chaotic; it’s also about what happens afterwards. How can we ensure learning from the experience? What could have been done better? There’s a significant training aspect here, where you can replay the incident for analysis, creating a substantial learning opportunity for both the incident commander and the firefighters.  Another aspect is inventory management. Understanding what happens to equipment during an incident is crucial. It’s about being proactive, not just assuming a piece of equipment like a cylinder will last for 15 years, but rather monitoring how often it’s used and adjusting maintenance procedures accordingly. The reality is that more urban cities like London, New York, or Los Angeles experience far more incidents than smaller municipalities, so the rules are not the same. It’s essential to provide the necessary tools and data so fire departments can manage their equipment more efficiently. In your opinion, how important is reliability in products for firefighters? And does this make it difficult to innovate?  Yes, and yes! Reliability is absolutely crucial. We cannot pursue technology just for the sake of it, if people are not going to trust it. Our approach to technology development, as I often discuss with our teams, is to take it in steps. We can do almost anything with current technology, but it’s important to have a phased approach. George Michael Bio, International Business Development Manager for FirePro presents the Condensed Aerosol Systems that will be available at Intersec and the important considerations  Condensed aerosol technology gained popularity in the 90’s due to the phase-out of Ozone-depleting substances – a result of the Montreal Protocol enforced on January 1, 1989. With almost three decades of worldwide use, the technology is regulated according to international standards and guidelines, such as the UL 2775, NFPA 2010, EN15276, ISO15779, VdS regulations, LPS 1656, LPS1204 Issue 3.2, BRLK23001, and IMO MSC.1 / Circ.1270 for Sea Going Vessels under SOLAS74.  Alike conventional gas suppression systems, Condensed Aerosol is classified as a Total Flooding agent. For system design and installation, the physical and technical parameters of the protected area, such as the class of fire, volume and height need to be taken into consideration. However, unlike its gas counterparts, the efficiency of fire suppression using condensed aerosol lies predominately in interrupting the chemical chain reactions occurring within the flame, rather than cooling or depleting the oxygen content in the protected enclosure.  Upon detection and confirmation of a fire, the solid aerosol forming compound contained within the generators, transforms from a solid state into a rapidly expanding two-phase fire suppression agent, consisting of potassium carbonate (K2CO3) – the active agent – as particulates of size smaller than 10 μm suspended in a gaseous blend. The gas-type 3D properties of condensed aerosol facilitate its even distribution in the protected volume, as well as its flow into the natural convection currents of combustion.  System Components  A fire suppression system consists of several components that work together to detect, extinguish and/or control fires. The fundamental elements include a detection system, responsible for identifying the presence of a fire, a control panel that orchestrates the system’s operation, and various alarm devices to alert occupants and other systems.   Expanding on the foundational elements of condensed aerosol fire suppression systems, the core components are the pre-engineered, non-pressurised generators. When activated, these generators release the designed amount of fire suppression agent in the enclosure. The Aerosol generators are an all-in-one device and are the equivalent of the agent/cylinder, piping and nozzles of conventional gaseous systems. The quantity and model of generators to be used are determined by the agent density required, which differs from one manufacturer to another and is derived from fire suppression tests. These tests are defined in protocols set out by relevant standards such as UL2775, EN15276 part 1 and ISO15779, conducted by accredited bodies and listing Authorities.  Design Principles for Total Flooding Systems:  Designing a condensed aerosol system is regulated by engineering standards which also address the way these systems are installed, commissioned and maintained. Such standards are EN15276 part 2, ISO15779 and NFPA 2010. For the system to be compliant to these standards, all components must be certified, approved or listed.  Below are the main considerations for a designer applying the requirements of NFPA 2010 standard as an example.   Agent Quantity calculation  Condensed aerosol systems are simple to design without the need for complex hydraulic calculations. To determine the mass of aerosol-forming compound i.e. the total flooding quantity required, in the absence of special conditions that would affect the extinguishing efficiency, one needs to take three factors into consideration:  1)Volume m3 (V)  2)Design Application Density g/m3 (da )   3)Additional Safety factor (fa )  By multiplying the three variables, we can derive the total solid mass (m) of condensed aerosol required: m= da x fa x V   The number of generators required are then derived by dividing the total mass (m) by the amount of solid compound contained in the generator type selected.  Volume and integrity of the enclosure (V)  Defining the fire boundaries is the initial step when dealing with any total flooding fire suppression system. Boundaries must be physical objects capable of withholding the agent at the required concentrations for the 10-minute minimum Hold Time, as specified in all international standards.  Achieving the Hold Time requires the assessment for leakages on the fire boundaries. Condensed aerosol systems can tolerate small openings in the enclosure without the need for a door fan test to quantify the level of leakages, provided that a visual inspection offers sufficient insight of the room’s integrity. Openings can be kept to a minimum by either permanent sealing or with automatic closures. Condensed aerosol system manufacturers are required to provide specific calculations to determine if additional agent is required.  In standby mode, condensed aerosol systems are non-pressurised. Upon discharge, they do not significantly contribute to a pressure increase, considering their low discharge pressure, therefore pressure relief vents are not mandatory.  As previously mentioned, aerosol generators are self-contained devices that are installed within the protected enclosure at high level – either on walls, ceilings, or both and consequently do not require dedicated floor space.  The positioning of the aerosol generators should be such to ensure a uniform distribution of the agent throughout the protected volume, along with ensuring the required minimum safety air clearances from personnel and combustible material. In the event of any alterations to the enclosure layout, the generators are versatile, allowing for easy repositioning as needed.  Design Application Density g/m3 (da )   A fundamental step of the design stage involves the identification of the Fire Class within the enclosure. In many scenarios, the presence of a combination of fuels is common, and adhering to NFPA guidelines becomes crucial in designing an effective condensed aerosol fire suppression system. In cases of mixed fuels, NFPA recommends applying the highest Design Application Density.  The Design Application Density can vary among different fire classes. It includes the Extinguishing Application Density, derived from fire suppression test protocols as defined by the UL2775 standard, and incorporates an additional 30% safety factor.    It is important to note that each aerosol manufacturer has a different extinguishing application density resulting from the engineering differences of the generators as well as the chemical formulation of the solid aerosol forming compound.  Additional Safety factor (fa)  In addition, the NFPA 2010 states that

New Year, new home for the ASFP

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) is pleased to announce it has moved to its new head office in Coventry. The new building provides the ASFP with greater capacity, enabling it to offer even more support and services to its members. The new premises, which will be opened in two phases, provide office space, as well as housing the new ASFP training academy. It offers a practical training facility, catering facilities, meeting and break-out/rest areas, and provides a permanent home for the famous ASFPTV. The current phase sees the ASFP team move into the first-floor office space, while Phase 2 will see the opening of the ground floor ASFP Academy. This area provides extensive training facilities, as well as housing the Association’s board room and meeting rooms. All these spaces will also be available for ASFP member and non-member use at preferential rental rates. Firemiks AB, pump proportioners provider, presents the superior technology of the proportioners showcased at Intersec 2024, taking place in January  Originally founded in 1979 as a Swedish family-based business – Firemiks AB is operated by the third generation together with strong industrial partners. Since 2010 we brand our proportioners FIREMIKS.  Throughout the years, the focus has been to develop, manufacture and distribute our product line of water driven volumetric pump proportioner systems, now supplied to more than 50 countries worldwide. The main goal for our company is to deliver optimal dosing solutions for the end-user. Our work method with modular system and machined parts (instead of casted) allows for tailor-made solutions to meet specific customer dosing challenges.  The heart of the product, the unique in-house designed volumetric multi-vane motor is produced in many sizes. Multiple overlapping vanes results in spreading of loads and a wide volumetric function, without using moving elastomer sealings.   This robust motor gives low noise, smooth start and rotation, and we combine it with industry leading piston- or gear pumps depending on three main factors; 1) viscosity of concentrate, 2) flow range and 3) working pressure.   By being able to offer two types of pumps this gives FIREMIKS a unique position: Piston pump models for viscosities from 1 cP (including wetting agents) up to around 5.000-6000 cP, covering most of the new SFFF concentrates. Our Piston pump models are classified as Variable viscosity proportioner in the FM approval terminology. Gear pump models are used when viscosities are even higher, up to around 8000 cP. (Brookfield viscometer spindle 4# at 30 rpm).  For us, quality means that we deliver services and products that meet our customers’ high expectations for performance, reliability, delivery, service and overall costs. To achieve this, we work through a close dialogue with our distributors, colleagues on the market, end customers and industry organisations, who need high-quality proportioning equipment for firefighting. Furthermore, we constantly improve and develop our products and our quality management system.   We are ISO-9001:2015 certified by BUREAU VERITAS “Development, production and sales of water motor driven dosing systems for fire-fighting”. FIREMIKS® is CE-marked, all our FIREMIKS® units conforms with European Directive 2006/42/EC.  When the grandfather of the current management in the early 1980 introduced the volumetric water driven foam pump system it was mainly to the fire brigade market in Sweden and the Nordic countries. When we 2010 started to brand our product FIREMIKS our main customer was in the international Oil and Gas market.  Since then, FIREMIKS brand has entered many different markets around the globe, including Offshore/Marin (DNV-certified) and re-entered into the Fire brigade market. Our FIREMIKS is well-suited in all installations where one needs a reliable proportioning solution without the need of additional power as electricity, petrol, etc. Examples of fixed applications are: Tank farms, Petrochemical industry, Harbor Jetties, Pump rooms, Warehouses, Waste incineration, Tunnel protection, etc. I.e. anywhere where there is a requirement for proportioning system to protect highly flammable material with Class B foam or other fire-fighting additives. Furthermore, FIREMIKS is suitable for dosing Class A foam for example 0,3-0,6-1% to fight bush and forest fires.
