ROCKWOOL® launches Fire Barrier EN

Preventing fire spread and inhibiting the passage of smoke in concealed spaces To help designers and specifiers improve building fire safety, stone wool insulation manufacturer ROCKWOOL® has launched a new fire barrier product that is tested in accordance with the latest BS EN standards. Tested to meet BS EN 1364-1:2015, 50mm Fire Barrier EN is available with a black foil facing on one or both sides, for single- and double-layer systems respectively. “Fire Barrier EN will replace our existing fire barrier products,” said Will Wigfield, Product Manager HVAC & Fire Protection at ROCKWOOL. “With the two options now available, we are underlining our commitment to ensuring that ROCKWOOL products are tested to EN standards wherever possible, while simplifying specification by streamlining the range. “Customers will see that we have built upon and expanded the scope of application available from ROCKWOOL. Depending on the application and fixing method, Fire Barrier EN offers fire resistance of up to two hours.” Fire Barrier EN has been tested in a series of common applications including below concrete soffits and within timber joist construction. Steel, copper and plastic pipes, as well as timber beams and cable trays were tested protected with a 300mm sleeve of Fire Barrier EN stitched-back on each side. Fire Barrier EN launches on 15th May 2024 following the expiration of Fire Barrier and Fire Barrier Slab certifications on 1st May 2024. Specifications written prior to this date will remain valid, but ROCKWOOL recommends swapping specifications to Fire Barrier EN wherever possible to benefit from the latest EN testing. NFPA Names Kelly Ransdell as Director of Public Education

Kelly Ransdell has been named as the new director of the NFPA Public Education division. In this role, Ransdell will oversee all public education messaging, program development and implementation, and serve as the primary public education expert for NFPA. “Kelly is a seasoned professional with a track record of advancing fire and life safety public education at the national, state, and local level,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA. “Along with her boundless passion, dedication, and energy, Kelly’s knowledge and experience will play an invaluable role in furthering our public education messages and information.” Ransdell boasts a career-long passion for public education and is a recognised expert throughout the country. Most recently, she served as the NFPA regional director for the South Central United States for the past four years. Before then, she was an NFPA regional specialist, covering 17 states for five years. Prior to joining the association in 2015, Ransdell worked as the deputy director of the North Carolina Department of Insurance – Office of State Fire Marshal, overseeing the Prevention, Programs and Grants Division for nearly 15 years. Additionally, she was the state director of Safe Kids North Carolina, which included 42 coalitions covering 72 counties, for 11 years. Prior to becoming an NFPA staff member, Ransdell was involved with the association in many capacities. In 2007, she began working as an NFPA public education advisor in 11 states. In addition, she was a member of the NFPA 1035 committee that provides technical assistance for national fire prevention standards. Ransdell is highly respected in the public education community and will work collaboratively with fire and life safety professionals to advance safety through effective public education information and programs. Streamlight® Launches Beartrap® 360 Work Light

Streamlight®, Inc., a leading provider of high-performance lighting, launched the new BearTrap® 360, a multi-function, rechargeable work light that features both a 360° horizontally rotating and a 270° vertically pivoting body, enabling users to put light wherever it’s needed. Delivering up to 2,000 lumens, the new work light clamps to virtually any surface or stands on its own for hands-free task illumination. With its unique spring-loaded clamp design and integrated magnets, the BearTrap 360 can be attached to any flat, round or irregular surface to shine a bright spot or flood light on work areas both small and large. A wire handle with a rubber sleeve provides an easy grip when opening the light’s clamping mechanism. “The new functionality of the BearTrap 360 now gives first responders, automotive and industrial technicians, outdoor enthusiasts, and other users the ability to easily spin the body of the light horizontally in addition to moving it vertically, for any angle view,” said Michael F. Dineen, Streamight’s Chief Revenue Officer. “This is a very useful feature when performing tasks that require angling a spot light as work progresses on a car engine, or continuously moving a flood light when investigating a fire or accident scene.” The BearTrap 360 provides six output modes, including three spot and three flood settings. The flood mode covers work areas or other surfaces with soft, bright light, ranging from 2,000 lumens on high with a 2.5-hour run time to 575 lumens on low, with an 8.75-hour run time. The light’s spot mode provides a white concentrated beam to pinpoint specific work areas, ranging from 1,000 lumens on high for 4.5 hours to 325 lumens on low for 12.5 hours. The BearTrap 360 uses an easy access, push-button on/off switch with a battery life indicator that turns red when the battery has reached the end of its usable life. The new light uses a 7.26-volt, 5200 mAh lithium-ion battery that can be recharged in 5.5 hours. The BearTrap 360 will also run continuously if plugged into an AC power supply. Manufactured from tough thermoplastic construction, it also features a gasket-sealed lens that is impervious to most common automotive or industrial chemicals. It has an IPX4-rated design for water-resistant operation and is impact resistance tested to 1 metre. Weighing 1048.93 grams, the light measures 19.35 centimetres in length, 16.51 centimetres in width, and is 7.92 centimetres thick. ADM Aeroports de Montreal receives 5 Striker 6×6 ARFF Vehicles

Oshkosh Airport Products, a division of Pierce Manufacturing Inc., and a subsidiary of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK), announced ADM Aéroports de Montréal has taken delivery of five Oshkosh Airport Products Striker® 6×6 ARFF vehicles. The vehicles will support emergency operations at two of the province’s largest airfields, YUL Montréal-Trudeau International Airport – which now serve over 21 million travelers annually – and YMX International Aerocity of Mirabel. ADM’s new ARFF vehicles were sold by Commercial Emergency Equipment Co., in cooperation with L’Arsenal in Quebec province. Aftermarket service and parts for the vehicles will be provided locally by L’Arsenal. “This project represents one of the largest single non-military ARFF sales in Canadian aviation history,” said Jack Bermingham, business unit director for Oshkosh Airport Products. “ADM’s retirement of a fleet of existing Strikers for this replacement order clearly demonstrates the ongoing trust they have in Oshkosh. Streamlight® Upgrades Litebox® And Firebox® Lanterns

Streamlight®, Inc., a manufacturer of high-performance flashlights, introduced upgraded versions of its popular LiteBox® and FireBox® rechargeable lanterns, each available in an E-Spot® model which produces a large, bright spot beam, and an E-Flood® version, designed to flood an area with light. All models are brighter, lighter-weight and run longer than previous LiteBox® and FireBox® lanterns, delivering up to 1,500 lumens and 110,000 candela on high and nearly 18 hours of run time on the low setting. The new models include the E-Flood® FireBox®, the E-Spot® FireBox®, the E-Flood® LiteBox®, and the E-Spot® LiteBox®. Upgraded versions of the E-Flood® and E-Spot® LiteBox® Power Failure Systems, featuring power failure circuitry that automatically illuminates the light when the power goes out, are also available. “These rugged, dependable lanterns provide extreme brightness for a wide variety of emergency lighting applications, from navigating through smoke-filled rooms to illuminating outside plant repairs when working under low light conditions,” said Michael F. Dineen, Streamlight’s Chief Revenue Officer. “The FireBox® models, which also feature two ultra-bright blue taillights so that users can be seen from behind, are ideal for firefighters and first responders when working under the challenging conditions they often face. And the LiteBox® lanterns are essential tools for industrial and automotive users for inspection, maintenance, and other needs.” Dineen added that the new lanterns are smaller and weigh less than half of their earlier counterparts, making them easier to wear or carry for long periods. They also provide new, enhanced features such as a large, tactile, push-button switch with a built-in battery status indicator. The E-Spot® FireBox® and LiteBox® models use four LEDs with deep parabolic reflectors for a long-range, spot beam pattern for investigating a fire scene or performing repair tasks. On the high setting, they provide 1,500 lumens, 110,000 candela, a beam distance of 663 metres and a run time of 7.5 hours. On the low setting, they deliver a run time of 17.75 hours, 350 lumens and 25,000 candela over 316 metres. The E-Flood® LiteBox® and FireBox® models feature four LEDs with shallow reflectors for a widened flood beam pattern that is ideal for such uses as such as lighting up a plant floor or conducting searches at a fire scene. On the high setting, the E-Flood® models provide 1,500 lumens and 4,700 candela over a distance of 137 metres. On the low setting, they deliver 350 lumens and 1,000 candela over 63 metres. Run time is 17.75 hours on the low setting and 7.5 hours on high. All models now use a lightweight, 7.4-volt, 5200 mAh lithium-ion battery which is rechargeable up to 500 times. Red and green LEDs provide battery charge status; flashing red indicates charging is needed, while green indicates fully charged. All models, which come in either orange or high-visibility yellow, are available as Standard and Vehicle Mount systems. The Standard E-Flood® and E-Spot® LiteBox systems include a shoulder strap, AC and DC charge cords, and a charge rack. The Vehicle Mount E-Flood® and E-Spot® LiteBoxes include a shoulder strap and vehicle-mounted hard-wired rack, while the Vehicle Mount E-Flood and E-Spot® FireBoxes also include two user-programmable ultra-bright blue taillight LEDs. The LiteBox® Power Failure models come with a shoulder strap, AC and DC charge cords and charge rack, plus “smart” power failure circuitry that automatically turns the lantern on when the power goes out. All models fit existing LiteBox®/FireBox® chargers. The lanterns each measure 28.45 cm in length and weigh 1389 grams. Each unit features high-impact, ABS thermoplastic housing with an easy-grip handle. All models are one-metre impact-resistant rested and feature an IPX4 design for water-resistant operation. New Lithium-Ion Battery Resources from NFPA

Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly found in many of the devices we use in our daily lives, from smartphones, laptops, and tablets to micromobility devices like e-bikes and e-scooters, and electric vehicles, among countless other devices. As use of these items has grown, so too, has the number of fires associated with them. This May, National Electrical Safety Month focuses on the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries and ways people can stay safe when using, charging, and storing devices that are powered by these batteries. The annual campaign is sponsored by Electrical Safety Foundation (ESFI), which raises awareness of potential home electrical hazards, the importance of electrical fire safety, and the safety of electrical workers, each May. The National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) is actively supporting the campaign in coordination with ESFI, providing free safety information and resources to residents to help reduce the risk of injury and damage to property when storing and charging lithium-ion batteries in devices. The Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition® (HFSC) and the NFPA Fire Sprinkler Initiative® announce the launch of Home Fire Sprinkler Week, May 12 – 18, 2024, focusing on the home fire problem and the need for better understanding of the life safety benefits of installed home fire sprinklers. In every community, home fires are a severe threat to residents and responding firefighters. Homes account for 78 percent of all civilian fire deaths. Today this problem is intensified by the fact that homes with modern furnishings, open spaces, unprotected lightweight wood construction, and emerging technologies such as lithium-ion batteries, make home fires deadly in two minutes or less. To confront this stubborn public safety burden, fire departments and safety advocates across North America will team up during the campaign to help amplify the message that fire sprinklers stop a fire from becoming deadly, protecting residents, and firefighters. Each day during Home Fire Sprinkler Week, participants can highlight a different theme and content for social media and websites that focus on key facts about home fire sprinklers. The messages are sized for various platforms, making it easy to share with little time and effort. Everyone is encouraged to visit the campaign website each day and share the messages. “Educating and increasing awareness about home fire sprinklers can be a challenge,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA and president of the HFSC. “What thwarts progress is a lack of public awareness, rampant myths, and the influence of special interests. More than one million homes are built each year and less than 10 percent are protected with fire sprinklers. Homes without fire sprinklers counter the goals of community risk reduction. During Home Fire Sprinkler Week, NFPA and HFSC are working together to raise awareness about unprotected home fires and how home fire sprinklers can prevent injuries, save lives, and protect property.” Participants can take advantage of the free resources of the new HFSC Studio to create a wide range of educational materials for their fire sprinkler community outreach initiatives. With this new, easy-to-use online tool, fire departments can design their own flyers, posters, and social media cards; share messages through their social media platforms; and print customized materials to distribute at community events such as home shows and open houses, and during campaigns such as Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™). Fire safety advocates know, and every year national fire data reinforces, installed fire sprinklers reduce home fire injuries, deaths, and property loss. “That’s why all national building codes require sprinklers in new construction,” said Carli. “As a result, every new home built without fire sprinklers is by definition, substandard. Today’s homebuyers are savvy about safety and when they learn about fire sprinklers, they want them.
