Calgary Fire Department First in Canada to Receive Volterra

Neptune Aviation Receives USFS Contract for Wildfire Season

Neptune Aviation Services, a leader in aerial firefighting and aviation services, was awarded a Multiple Award Task Order Contract (MATOC) by the United States Forest Service (USFS) with task orders for the three BAe 146 aircraft they had available for the 2024 wildfire season. All three task orders are for exclusive use and include a base year with four 1-year options along with 160-day guaranteed Mandatory Availability Periods (MAP). With this award and their existing contracts, Neptune’s entire fleet of nine airtankers are committed to exclusive-use contracts. “All of our BAe 146 aircraft are strategically deployed under contract in key wildfire-prone regions, including California and Colorado, ensuring nationwide coverage and rapid response capabilities,” says Jennifer Draughon, President of Neptune Aviation. “We are proud to support wildland firefighting efforts across the country and we are grateful to everyone at Neptune for helping us to secure this contract. Their commitment to excellence has solidified Neptune as a leader in aerial firefighting.” Neptune’s fleet of BAe 146 airtankers is ideally suited for aerial wildland firefighting. These aircraft offer a combination of slow flight characteristics, high cruising speed, and outstanding maneuverability. They have a stellar record of operational safety and excellent field performance, and do not require special ground support, allowing Neptune to operate out of airfields with minimal assistance. Each aircraft can be loaded with 3,000 gallons of fire retardant or water in as little as six minutes. The aircraft reserved through this contract have already started their MAP. Fire False Alarms Waste 14,575 Days in Last Decade

In the year ending September 2023, Fire & Rescue Services (FRSs) attended 246,529 fire false alarms, the largest year ending September figure since 2011. As experts in passive fire protection, Fire Seals Direct will be focusing on false alarms caused by a fire alarm or fire-fighting equipment (including accidental initiation by persons) in error. What is a ‘false fire alarm’? Firstly, we must define a fire false alarm. According to the Home Office, a fire false alarm is ‘where an FRS attends a location believing there to be a fire incident but, on arrival, discovers that no such incident exists or existed’ Fire false alarms can be broken down into 3 motive-based categories: Good intent: Calls made in good faith in the belief that there is a fire. Malicious intent: Calls made with the intention of getting the FRS to attend a non-existent incident. Due to apparatus: Caused by a fire alarm or fire-fighting equipment (including accidental initiation by persons) in error. As experts in passive fire protection, we will be focusing on this latter category. Here’s a summary of our key findings: Fire false alarms wasted 349,806 hours in England in the last decade. Fire false alarms wasted 14,575 days in England in the last decade. The number of fire false alarms increased by 8.0% compared with 10 years ago. There has been a 20% decrease in malicious fire false alarms from 10 years previously. Faulty apparatus is the largest time waster, with a 14% increase from 10 years previously. Fire response times are getting slower, increasing by 49 seconds compared with 10 years ago. In 2022/23 alone, fire false alarms wasted 37,164 hours (or 1,549 days) Including return journeys, 699,611 hours (or 29,150 days) were wasted by fire false alarms in the past decade. This year’s conversation was especially pertinent as they delved into the ongoing transition towards electric vehicles, with a particular focus on Pierce Manufacturing’s Volterra electric pumper, which was introduced several years ago and has since been a topic of keen interest.  Catching up with John and the rest of the Pierce and Oshkosh Airport Products team provides invaluable insights into the practical implications of these technological advancements. The team’s dedication to innovation is evident in their thorough approach to integrating such technologies across their product lines. This interview highlights how legislation, market receptivity, and technological integration intersect to shape the future of emergency response vehicles. John’s perspective offers a deep dive into the challenges and rewards of pioneering electric vehicles within an industry that is traditionally reliant on conventional fuel sources.  Can you introduce yourself?  I started my journey with Pierce Manufacturing as an intern in 2003, and I am now the Vice President and General Manager of Pumper Products. Over the years, I’ve leveraged my education and expertise to spearhead innovative product development projects. I’ve been deeply involved in the design and production of several key products like the Pierce Ultimate Configuration (PUC™), Pierce Responder Pumper, and Husky™ 3 & 12 foam systems. My career at Pierce has also seen me take on roles such as Platform Director of Chassis Products in 2016, and Pumper & Custom Chassis Products more recently. In my current role, I manage all aspects of pumper, fire suppression, and electrical technologies, encompassing strategic product planning, production, engineering, product management, and lifecycle management. My primary goal in all these endeavors is to exceed customer performance requirements, ensuring that our products not only meet but surpass expectations.  Can you tell us about the new entrance into the warning light space and your unique approach?  The interesting part is our partnerships, where we’ve embedded advanced control into our multiplex system, changing how warning lights work. Traditionally, changing warning light configurations such as colours and flash patterns required manual reprogramming and sometimes hardware changes, which can be very time-consuming and inflexible.  With our latest initiative, we’ve embedded advanced control capabilities directly into our proprietary multiplex system. This system allows us to offer unprecedented customization directly from the vehicle’s onboard screen. Now, operators can easily modify and test different settings in real-time without the need for external programming tools or significant downtime. This flexibility is crucial for emergency services, where adaptability can significantly impact response effectiveness.  Moreover, this integration with our control systems isn’t just about improving how the warning lights work; it’s about enhancing the overall usability and functionality of the vehicle. By centralizing control and allowing for easy updates, we’re making our emergency vehicles smarter, more responsive, and ultimately safer on the road.  And is this advanced integration exclusive to one type of vehicle?  The advanced integration we’ve implemented is exclusive to the Pierce command zone, our proprietary multiplexing system, which is a standard feature across our entire portfolio of vehicles. This system is pivotal because it allows us to provide over-the-air software updates, which continually enhance both the user experience and the vehicle’s functional capabilities—similar to how smartphone updates work.  Additionally, our commitment extends beyond just advanced lighting systems. For instance, with the advent of electric vehicles like our Volterra model, we’re pushing the boundaries on how electrification can be integrated into emergency service vehicles. We are currently collaborating with select customers in various North American regions to rigorously test the Volterra under diverse operational conditions. This is part of our broader strategy to ensure that the transition from diesel to electric power is as smooth and seamless as possible for our end-users. Mitigating the risk of thermal runaway with Fogmaker

Fogmaker International AB has been manufacturing fire suppression systems with water-based mist for machines and vehicles since 1995. With over 300,000 systems installed in nearly 70 countries, the company has extensive experience in managing risk areas in both traditional diesel and gasoline engines and in machines with alternative fuels.  With electric vehicles on the rise, many worry about fires in the battery packs and it is true that extinguishing a battery fire is very difficult. The chemical reactions happen quickly, and the battery casing makes it impossible to reach the blaze. The good news is, it’s rare that a fire starts inside a battery and research presented at the 2023 FIVE conference shows 50-60% of electric vehicle fires never involve the battery at all. Batteries may catch fire because of thermal runaway, but this is rare. There are mainly two reasons for a battery to start burning: collision or an external fire.   No fire suppression system can protect against collisions, but it can protect against external fires reaching the battery pack. A good fire suppression system should target fire initiators to prevent or delay an external fire from affecting the battery and can reduce flames from the battery in the unlikely event of it being on fire.  But, electricity and water is a no-no, right? We’ve all seen the movie where someone is electrocuted by a radio or blow dryer falling into a tub.   Water-mist is not considered electrically conductive. Also, electric vehicles and machines are built to withstand humidity, rain, and road splash. They have a high ingress protection for any high voltage parts. A water-mist system like Fogmaker’s will not penetrate components with an IP-classification of IP66 or higher. And, you need to be part of the circuit to get current through your body, and this means you would have to be in physical contact with both the negative and positive terminals.  Least but not last, the Battery Management System has many safety features to protect from dangerous currents.   Fogmaker’s fire suppression system works with a water-based mist where each single drop of water is split into thousands of droplets. Practically, that means that Fogmaker has a great cooling effect, and this is imperative when dealing with fires in electric vehicles. Fogmaker has decades of experience in detecting and suppressing fires in engine rooms and other enclosed spaces, and the system will provide the best possible fire protection performance if there is an emergency. The system is tailored to each type, make, model, and energy source since they all have different risk areas.  The Fogmaker system deploys when the compartment reaches a certain temperature. At this point, a fine water-based mist fills the compartment, displaces oxygen, and chokes the fire. Fogmaker’s pressurized cylinders ensure the system will work regardless of position – even if the vehicle has toppled upside down – and our patented nozzles divide each drop of water into micro droplets that have a better ability to choke the fire and cool the area than all other methods on the market. Cooling the area is important to prevent a blaze from flaring up again and depending on the application, Fogmaker systems are designed to keep cooling somewhere between 40 and 90 seconds. Simplifying Hazardous Location Suppression with TLX

TLX Fire & Security’s Explosion Proof Actuator with Supervision is specifically designed for fire suppression systems in hazardous locations  Hazardous locations where flammable substances may be present in the atmosphere require specially designed fire suppression systems. The electric actuators used in standard systems to release the extinguishing agent are not designed to cope with the presence of these substances. An electrical input to the actuator could result in a spark, igniting the atmosphere around it.  Because of this, fire suppression systems for hazardous locations are typically composed of an actuating device to open the discharge valve on the extinguishing agent cylinder, tubing to route the discharge pressure, and a specialised enclosure to prevent the accidental ignition of any flammable substances in the atmosphere. These systems are very effective, but the extra connections needed for the tubing that routes the discharge pressure are sources of potential leaks, and the enclosure adds complexity.    TLX had received numerous inquiries about possible solutions that would satisfy hazardous location requirements while being less complex and easier to install than existing options. In response, TLX developed the patented Explosion Proof Actuator with Supervision. This linear electric actuator is UL HazLoc, ATEX, and IECEx certified and includes an integrated supervisory feature that meets regulatory standards for supervision.  The Explosion Proof Actuator with Supervision is uniquely designed as a top-mounted linear actuator, so it does not act as a pressure vessel on the discharge valve, reducing the number of potential leak points in the system. Specific design features and material grade selections allow the actuator to act as its own enclosure. This eliminates the need for additional components and simplifies the system. All potential flame paths are specifically designed to prevent flame egress in the event a spark were to ignite any gas found within the actuator.   The actuator’s internal components can be configured during production to accommodate any fire suppression system’s operating pressure up to 300 bar, and its interface can be customised to fit any linearly actuated system. Mounting thread style, connector type (male or female), firing pin stick-out, and firing pin geometry can be configured to match the system’s specifications.   For hazardous location fire suppression systems that rely on multiple cylinders, using an electric actuator on each cylinder is costly and impractical. Instead, a single electric actuator can be used on one cylinder, and pneumatic actuators can be used on the additional cylinders. When the electric actuator fires, some of the discharge pressure is routed to the pneumatic actuators, opening the discharge valves on the corresponding cylinders. Telent secures extension for critical comms of major road race

Event organisers, media broadcast outlets, on-site emergency services personnel and visitors will all continue to have access to reliable connectivity at the largest outdoor sporting event in Ireland for the next three years. This is thanks to a contract extension awarded to Telent to provide the voice and data communications infrastructure for the North West 200, with their successful collaboration set to span two decades. This year’s motorcycle road race took place on May 6-11th 2024 and attracts more than 150,000 visitors and is streamed to millions across the globe every year. Telent installed the equipment at various points around the race circuit and had a team of ten staff for on-site support during the event to quickly address any additional requirements or potential technical incidents. “We are delighted to have secured a three-year extension with North West 200, building on our success together and supporting its technical requirements for the past 18 years,” said Jo Gretton, CEO at Telent. “Telent plays a crucial role as a trusted partner in supporting critical digital infrastructure, and at this year’s race, I was one of the 150,000 fans in attendance, benefitting from the reliable communications the event had to offer.” Delivering the telephony, radio voice communications, timing infrastructure, race clocks and timing screens, Telent also provided the off-site TV production company, which livestreamed the event, with a “fibre to the camera” solution. This involved the provision of cabling to cameras, radio communications from the off-site producer to the cameramen and commentators via DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) communications and 4G SIM based back-up backhaul. “As we welcomed hundreds of thousands of fans across the globe to this year’s event, a cutting-edge network that promises seamless connectivity, live-streaming and communications is as critical as ever. Telent’s continued support once again proved to be crucial,” said Mervyn Whyte MBE, Event Director at North West 200. The greenfield site is transformed annually into a racetrack, with all of the communications equipment installed as part of the set-up and then removed from the site following the event.
