However, visitors still ventured to the stands and visitor statistics were predicted to total a dramatic 125,000. Packexe SMASH kick started the show with daily live demonstrations in the outside showground. Fire Fighters from Leipzig used Packexe SMASH during a full extrication exercise, showing Packexe SMASH’s performance under several different scenarios including wet conditions. The demonstrators showed how glass can be left in place during extrication or broken and removed in one piece with the application of Packexe SMASH. Packexe were pleased to welcome friends from extrication challenges across the world onto the stand alongside new enquiries from throughout Europe, North America, South America, Australasia, Africa the Far East and Asia. Relief organisations rely on high-tech with m Mobile water supply: Relief organisations rely on high-tech with membrane technology Leipzig / Celle June 9, 2010 – When the regular drinking water supply is no longer provided, due to natural disasters or technical problems, for instance, mobile water treatment plants are applied by disaster control organisations all around the world – also in Germany. At the Interschutz trade show, the Berkefeld water technology company presents the TWA 15 UF, which is a new system that is fitted with the latest process technology and fulfils the high demands placed on drinking water treatment in Germany. Additionally, a so-called bladdertank, a flexible container, which is used for the storage or temporary storage of drinking water. Mobile water treatment with ceramic membrane The TWA 15 UF plant, which has been newly developed with the help of the Technisches Hilfswerk (THW – Federal Agency for Technical Relief), has already proven its high per-formance in field operations. The plant was last used in the Wetterau region, to the north of Frankfurt, when, at the end of February, when the regular drinking water supply had to be temporarily closed down, which was due to microbiological contamination of the pipeline bound drinking water supply. Apparently, due to the heavy rainfall and snow melting, the near surface groundwater was contaminated to such an extent that the drinking water supply for around 1,200 residents had to be discontinued as a safety measure. A TWA 15 UF was transported to the site, set up and put into operation by the THW during the first night of outage. The plant produces 11,000 litres of clean drinking water per hour, which is first used to flush the pipeline network clean, then as a drinking water supply for human consumption. Thus, the plant provided a supply of clean drinking water for around five weeks, until an additional, stationary treatment could be performed with the aid of a UFlex ultrafiltration system in the local water treatment facility – also provided by Berkefeld, a subsidiary of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies. The TWA 15 UF mobile water treatment plant that was temporarily applied is con-structed in a modular design, so that is can be easily adapted to suit the given quality of the untreated water by an appropriate combination of the respectively required process steps. Depending on the combination of the modules, the system provides between 5 and 15 cubic metres of clean water per hour. The plant is not only designed for use around the world, but also fulfils the strict KTW / DVGW – W 270 regulations, thus, it is also approved for use in the drinking water supply in Germany. The plant is equipped with multiple germ barriers. The core piece is a newly developed ceramic ultrafiltration membrane. It is designed as a monolith block and is, thus, particularly robust. In addition to this membrane process, the overall system includes, among other things, pre-filtration with disc filters, flocculation and adsorption, disinfection with UV light, depot chlorination, as well as drinking water storage and distribution. The plant fits in the freight hold of practically any common airliner and can be easily loaded onto and transported by lorry. Safe storage of drinking water in bladdertanks In addition to the treatment, the correct storage and distribution also play an impor-tant part in water supply in cases of crisis. The so-called bladdertanks, which Berkefeld presents at the Interschutz, are suitable for correct storage or temporary storage of untreated water or drinking water. The tanks hold between 0.5 m³ and 20 m³, and, if required, are also available in other sizes up to 150 m³. The particular advantage: These closed foil tanks are equipped with special zips, which facilitate easy opening and cleaning of the containers. This enables the hygienically safe storage of the treated water. The mobile, collapsible containers can be used anywhere, even in uneven terrain. The containers can be safely fastened down on lorries or trailers with the aid of suitable clamping gear. Due to the fact that the Berkefeld bladdertanks are in accordance with the German KTW regulations, they are approved for use in the drinking water supply in Germany. NFPA Standards Council bans use of antifreeze in sprinkler systems

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards Council has banned the use of antifreeze solution in residential fire sprinkler systems The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards Council has banned the use of antifreeze solution in residential fire sprinkler systems for new construction until further action by NFPA consensus standards committees, and NFPA has issued a follow-up to its July 2010 safety alert to provide updated guidance on the use of antifreeze in residential fire sprinkler systems. The council action and updated alert follow new research that was conducted after a fire incident raised concerns about antifreeze solutions in residential fire sprinkler systems. The incident involved a grease fire in a kitchen where a sprinkler with a high concentration of antifreeze deployed. The fire resulted in a single fatality and serious injury to another person. “Fire sprinklers are one of the most effective ways to save lives and property from fire,” said James M. Shannon, president of NFPA. “We have acted quickly to conduct additional research in order to provide the public and our technical committees with as much information as possible regarding the use of antifreeze in sprinkler systems.” According to NFPA, the home is the place where most fire fatalities occur, and when sprinklers are present, the risk of dying in a home fire decreases by 83%. Shannon said the key findings from the new report were: Antifreeze solutions with concentrations of propylene glycol exceeding 40% and concentrations of glycerin exceeding 50% have the potential to ignite when discharged through automatic sprinklers. Both the 40% propylene glycol and 50% glycerin solutions demonstrated similar performance to that of water alone for fire control throughout the series of tests. Based on the results of this research, antifreeze solutions of propylene glycol exceeding 40% and glycerin exceeding 50% are not appropriate for use in residential fire sprinkler systems. Consideration should be given to reducing the acceptable concentrations of these antifreeze solutions by an appropriate safety factor. Based on the research, NFPA offered the following updated guidance on residential fire sprinklers systems: New Systems NFPA standards prohibit the use of antifreeze in residential fire sprinkler systems in new construction following the August 16, 2010 issuance of tentative interim amendments (TIA) to NFPA 13, 13D and 13R. If you are putting in a new residential fire sprinkler system (including all NFPA 13D applications and the dwelling unit portions of NFPA 13 and NFPA 13R systems), refer to the latest editions of NFPA 13, NFPA 13D and NFPA 13R, as amended by TIAs 1000, 995, and 994. Existing Systems Fire sprinklers are extremely effective fire protection devices, significantly reducing deaths, injuries and property loss from fire. These systems should not be disconnected. Residential fire sprinkler systems, whenever possible, should not contain an antifreeze solution. If you have, or are responsible for, an existing residential occupancy with a fire sprinkler system, contact a sprinkler contractor to check and see if there is antifreeze solution in the system. If there is antifreeze solution in the system, determine if other means, such as insulation, can be used to provide adequate freeze protection. If there is no viable alternative to antifreeze solutions, NFPA recommends the following: Use only propylene glycol or glycerin antifreeze solution. The antifreeze solution should be the lowest possible concentration required for the needed freeze potential but under no circumstance should the antifreeze solution exceed a maximum concentration of 40% of propylene glycol or a maximum concentration of 50% of glycerin. Consideration should be given to reducing these concentrations by an additional safety factor. The antifreeze solution should only be a factory pre-mixed; use of factory pre-mixed solutions is essential to ensure the proper concentration level and solution integrity. Antifreeze solutions should only be used with the approval of the local authority having jurisdiction. Donaldson's Remains in Profit as the Recession Continues to Bite

Fife-based timber specialist, James Donaldson Fife-based timber specialist, James Donaldson & Sons Ltd has announced its end of year results, with the company remaining in profit despite the economic difficulties affecting the construction industry. The company achieved a profit before tax of £615,000; a drop in profit from last year, but an impressive feat in such challenging conditions. Turnover for the year to March 2010 shows an increase of 3.5% from last year up to £80.7m. Following a record low in 2009, Group borrowings rose towards the end of the year as working capital levels increased on higher trading activity levels. However, debt to equity remains low at only 31%. Chairman and Chief Executive of the Donaldson Group, Mr Neil Donaldson comments: “The performance of the Group represents a commendable achievement given the economic backdrop. We are incredibly proud to have not just survived but to have actually made a profit during the recession, when so many businesses are disappearing around us.” As well as an increase in turnover, Donaldson’s has taken on more staff over the year, with employee numbers up to 521 from 491 last year. Looking to the year ahead, Mr Donaldson says: “The market has picked up in recent months and trading has been better than we have experienced for some time; we’ve had a very promising start to the year. However, our new coalition government is keen to cut public spending, which may impact on our trading in the months ahead.” In June HRH Prince Andrew visited the Donaldson’s sawmill as part of the Company’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

According to Sturbridge Fire Chief Leonard E. Sturbridge has a population of about 10,000 and is home to the nationally recognized outdoor history museum Old Sturbridge Village, located just a mile from the firehouse. The museum is a non-profit educational institution demonstrating the everyday life of a rural New England town during the 1830s and includes over forty original buildings. During peak season and for special visitor events held throughout the year, daily visitors to Old Sturbridge Village can number as many as 4,000. In addition to protection for Old Sturbridge Village, conditions for which Chief Senecal anticipates the new KIMTEK transport skid to be well suited include brush fires, football games, and other town events that draw large crowds. Designed for a mission Affixed to pick-up trucks and utility vehicles, KIMTEK transport skid units are ideal for fire and medical rescue operations in remote locations too narrow or rugged for ordinary vehicles to easily traverse as well as for use maneuvering safely through large crowds. The Firelite transport skid unit purchased by the Sturbridge Fire Department includes a Pacer® pump with a poly tank and, most notably, a victim rescue area. The ability to immediately transport a victim atop the skid is a unique and important feature, KIMTEK founder and president Kimball Johnson explained. “Reaching the site might be only part of the job,” Mr. Johnson said. “Transporting a victim swiftly to medical services is an option rescue personnel always want to have.” Mr. Johnson, himself a volunteer EMT and firefighter, recently retired as fire chief from the fire-and-rescue department he founded in his own small Vermont community ten years ago. His first-hand knowledge of the limited resources towns have available for safety services and equipment compels him to design and build efficient first-response transport units like the Firelite Series and offer them at affordable prices. Protecting a way of life “The Sturbridge Fire Department has always been very supportive of our mission to accurately represent early Nineteenth Century life while helping us maintain the latest fire and safety precautions,” said Brad King, Director of Facilities and Grounds at Old Sturbridge Village. “Throughout the grounds here, essential fire and security equipment is disguised and hidden among authentic period displays.” The museum grants visitors access to about 200 acres of history in the form of working farms, mills, residences, shops, and more, attended by costumed history interpreters. Fire alarm systems and disabled refuges installed across ten Bristol schools

Suitably certified, correctly installed School environments require fire safety systems that are reliable, suitably certified and correctly installed. An integral component of any such system is the fire resistant cabling. So, when Sovereign Fire and Security Ltd were subcontracted to carry out work under the BSF (Building Schools for the Future) programme they used Prysmian’s FP200 Gold. 1.5mm 2 and 4 core FP200 Gold is now installed in the fire alarm systems and disabled refuges across ten BSF schools in the Bristol area.
