Romanian Success Story for ULF AquaMist

Tyco Fire Protection Products has seen its innovative ULF AQUAMIST… Tyco Fire Protection Products has seen its innovative ULF AQUAMIST (Ultra Low Flow) water mist system specified and installed in a complete renovation of the Museum of Regional History in Oradea, Romania, originally built in 1870, in response to challenging technical issues.   A complex gaseous fire suppression system was originally specified for the project, which proved to be both beyond the client’s budget and complicated to install due to the restricted space within the structure of the old building. Working alongside its dedicated Romania distributor, Sigura, Tyco Fire Protection Products supplied in-depth technical guidance during the initial stages of the project to provide reassurance relating to the suitability and performance of its complete ULF AQUAMIST fire protection package.   This technical advice demonstrated Tyco Fire Protection Products’ knowledge, experience and capability within the fire suppression market led to the business winning the €260,000 contract. To deliver its client’s requirements, Tyco Fire Protection Products combined its gas (Inergen) and ULF AQUAMIST fire protection systems for the 4,850m2 floor area – providing the first ULF AQUAMIST water mist solution in the world.   The project constraints required smaller pipe diameters to cope with restricted space and a need to reduce the amount of water required to extinguish any potential fire event. Tyco Fire Protection Products’ combined solution also ensured that the valuable contents and artefacts within the museum would not suffer any severe water damage that could have occurred with a traditional sprinkler system.   The specification requirements were ideally suited to the ULF AQUAMIST system, which uses lower pressures and enables smaller diameter pipes to be used without any compromise in fire suppression performance. A five-fold reduction in water consumption is also achieved with enhanced water mist technology, along with reduced maintenance costs, when compared to a standard water sprinkler system. It is also more cost-effective to install than a high pressure water mist solution.   In addition to its recently-launched ULF AQUAMIST system, Tyco Fire Protection Products also supplied its Inergen gas and Ansul autopulse and detection products for the museum project. Supplied as a complete, engineered fire protection package, ULF AQUAMIST included ancillary products such as G-Press press-fit piping, nozzles, pump skid and pipe supports. Design software and installation training were also provided as part of Tyco Fire Protection Products’ complete engineered solution.   Tyco Fire Protection Products were awarded the project after providing in-depth technical assistance during the initial stages of the project and demonstrating that its high-performance products could meet the challenging requirements of the application. The complete fire suppression system was designed and installed using Tyco Fire Protection Products’ range of solutions. The project showcased Tyco Fire Protection Products’ total integrated approach, with departments combining efforts across international boundaries to provide the very best service to the client – particularly with the business’ services department providing outstanding support to the EMEA Region East sales team.   Following the successful completion of this first ULF AQUAMIST project, Tyco Fire Protection Products has since collaborated with Sigura to deliver a water mist seminar in Bucharest, Romania to further promote the use of ULF AQUAMIST fire protection systems in the region. Attended by installers, fire brigade services, designers and end users, the event led to Tyco Fire Protection Products securing another project for a landmark hotel refurbishment scheme in Bucharest as a result of its leading industry capability and new product development.

Bristol uniforms saddened by the death of its past owner at the age of 95

It is with much sadness that we announce the death of Mr Pat Hill.. It is with much sadness that we announce the death of Mr Pat Hill who passed away on Friday 17th December at the age of 95.   Mr Hill (and his family before him) owned Bristol Uniforms for 112 years from 1887, when Mr William J Hill took over the business from Wathen Gardiner, until the sale of the family business in 1999.   Mr Hill started working at Bristol Uniforms in 1935, at the age of 20, after working for 3 years for Selfridges in London. He saw active service during World War 2, serving mainly in the Middle East from 1939 to the end of the war. In 1945 he rejoined the company and became its senior partner in 1954. He acquired the business in 1964 and took over as its Managing Director the following year when Bristol Uniforms became a limited company.   In the 1960’s, Mr Hill pioneered developments in firefighting clothing, laying the foundations of the international business it is today. He was instrumental in establishing a worldwide network of distributors in the 1940s and 1950s which today generate around half of the company’s global business.   Although retired by 1998, Mr Hill came back to oversee the sale of the Company in 1999, to what was then the Faithful Group, and is now BTQ Group.   Roger Startin, Bristol’s joint managing director, said, “I have known Pat Hill for over 30 years, and worked alongside him for almost 20, so this is a particularly sad day for me. Our staff, present and past, customers and suppliers who have known him, over a lifetime’s involvement with the company stretching back 75 years, wish to record their condolences to his family and to place on record the debt of gratitude we owe him for the contribution he has made to the growth and success of our company over this time”. Oshkosh Striker Fleet Grows at Denver International Airport

Purchase of two vehicles makes total of seven Strikers at DIA  Oshkosh Airport Products Group, a division of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK), today announced that it has received an order for two more Oshkosh Striker 4500 aircraft rescue and fire fighting (ARFF) vehicles from the City of Denver. The vehicles will be placed into service at Denver International Airport (DIA), with delivery expected in April 2011.   When combined with four Striker 4500s and one Striker 1500 model already on duty, DIA will have seven Oshkosh Striker vehicles serving at the airport.   “We’re extremely pleased that, following an exhaustive evaluation, the Striker 4500 is again the ARFF vehicle of choice at such a prestigious and internationally significant airport as Denver International,” said Jeff Resch, Oshkosh Corporation Airport Products vice president and general manager. “The Striker’s ability to respond to large and challenging airport emergency scenarios is confirmed by Denver’s real world experience with the Striker over the last two years.”   DIA purchased its first Striker 4500 in 2008 following an evaluation to determine the vehicle’s capabilities for serving the airport’s emergency response requirements.   “Our ARFF emergency response team has extremely high standards for on and off-road vehicle performance, and the Oshkosh Striker 4500 has met our requirements,” said Denver International Airport Assistant Fire Chief Bill Davis. “Denver International has a 53 square mile footprint, and we need the capability to quickly transport large quantities of water to remote locations.” The Striker 4500 features an 8 x 8 axle configuration and proprietary technologies such as TAK-4® independent suspension, triple agent firefighting capabilities and Command Zone™ advanced electronics for enhanced maneuverability, firefighting power and reliability. Other features include :   • 4,500 gallons (17,033 L) of water capacity • 420 gallons (1,590 L) of foam capacity • 500 pounds (227 kg) of dry chemical • Roof turret with 1,200 GPM (4,542 LPM) flow capacity • High volume, low attack bumper turret with Hydrochem nozzle and 1,200 GPM (4542 LPM) flow • Pre-connected water and foam hoses • Oshkosh Rear Steer system to decrease overall turning circle and reduce tire wear • Caterpillar C18 diesel engine with 950HP and 2,400 ft. lbs of torque   The Striker 1500 is on duty at the Denver Fire Department ARFF Training Academy located within the airport grounds. This Training Academy is a state-of-the-art facility that trains firefighters from around the world in the most advanced methods of fighting aircraft fires. Along with the Striker 1500 vehicle, the Academy features 16 state-certified instructors, unique interactive technology and a full-scale aircraft mock-up to provide tremendous learning opportunities in a realistic environment.   At 53 square miles, DIA is the largest airport in the United States, and the third largest in the world. Its 16R/34L runway is the longest commercial runway in North America. In 2009, with 50,167,495 passengers served, DIA was the tenth busiest airport in the world as measured by passenger traffic. The airport is located in northeastern Denver, Colo., and is operated by the city and county of Denver.

Pierce receives order for five arrows XT pumpers from Bellevue, Washington

The vehicles will be placed into service in mid 2011.
