What they liked is, that the Diamond tips are literally “biting” into slippery surfaces, namely sheet steel of vehicles“. As a consequence, many have been suggesting that such a tip should become standard with the SP 310, as well. However: on the other hand there were quite a few whose first choice was definitely the multifunctional tip of the SP 310. What they liked was, that this tip is offering extra opportunities beyond the traditional RTA applications such as: USAR, Disaster Management, Railway- and Aircraft accidents etc. The best of both worlds is available for LUKAS customers: The new interchangeable spreader tip system is featuring field replaceable tips which can be changed in a second. The snap mechanism is functioning like the one already known from existing SP 300 / SP 300E models. Models SP 300 E (eDRAULIC) and SP 300 will be delivered as standard with the Diamond tip, as exercised before. This is to highlight its position as light spreader dedicated to typical RTA scenarios. Standard tips with SP 310 will be the well known multifunctional tips. Those are now promoted as “Universal” tips. "Universal" is highlighting SP 310’s position in the portfolio as the strong all – rounder that reliably masters every challenge beyond the traditional RTA application. The optional tip packages "Universal" and "Diamond" are meant as accessory kits, each including two tips. Fike supports fire alarm training centres

Delta Fire provides high rise fire nozzle solutions

Introduced three bespoke new nozzles Delta Fire , the UK’s largest manufacturer of Fire Fighting Nozzles, has taken a very pro-active role in the provision of specialist nozzles and equipment to deal with fires in high rise buildings. There are a number of problematic issues in maintaining nozzle performance on every floor of a high rise building due mainly to the reduction of water pressure experienced on upper levels. Working closely with UK Fire and Rescue Services, Delta Fire have been instrumental in developing three bespoke fire nozzles that have combatted this problem allowing for safe, efficient firefighting at every level of the building. Based on the highly reputed Delta ‘Attack’ range these new High Rise variants have been tailored to suit the specific requirements of each Brigade. Manchester Fire and Rescue have recently taken delivery of the New Delta Attack 750 Hi-Flow/Lo-Flow High Rise Nozzles & others such as Nottingham Fire and Rescue the Specialist Attack 500 High Rise Nozzles. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue have had the Delta Jet/Spray Smooth Bore Combination High Rise Nozzles in use for some time designed to provide all the Jet/Spray benefits of the ‘Attack’ but with the added advantage of a detachable front end allowing the firefighter to swap to a Smooth Bore front should the Jet/Spray become blocked by debris. Alongside the developments in High Rise Branches Delta Fire is nearing completion of their new High Rise ‘Floor Below Nozzle’. This nozzle allows the firefighter to tackle a fire in an upper floor from the floor below by means of a long nozzle (jointed for ease of lift access) manufactured to the optimum angle to fire a solid jet of water through the window of the room above, hitting the ceiling and providing gas cooling prior to a firefighter entering the room. In preliminary tests at a UK Brigade an upper room was taken to 600 degrees in a controlled fire situation. Using the ‘Delta Floor Below Nozzle’ the temperature was reduced to just 90 degrees in only 20 seconds. This is a major step forward in firefighter safety and reduces the risks associated with rising room temperatures. The ‘Delta Floor Below Nozzle’ will be officially launched at the NEC Emergency Services Show later this year but will be available for earlier trials upon request. Fire service needs transforming

Says government review  Fire and rescue services in England need to be "transformed" to become more efficient and effective, a government-commissioned review has said. Sir Ken Knight said incidents were down 40% over the past decade but the number of firefighters was roughly the same. Former chief fire and rescue adviser Sir Ken said having 46 separate authorities was not "sensible". The Fire Brigades Union described the review as a "fig leaf" for increased cuts to the fire service. Sir Ken’s ideas for the future included the creation of a single fire service for England, mirroring Scotland’s system. Ideas for debate Sir Ken, who recently retired as the government’s chief fire and rescue adviser, also found inexplicable variations in the amount different fire and rescue authorities were spending. After finding that, in some areas, services cost twice as much to provide as they did elsewhere, he suggested tens of millions of pounds could be saved every year. Sir Ken said many local authorities were considering ways to save money in fire services – including mergers, new shift patterns and greater use of part-time firefighters. Cannot play media. He said: "In a full-time fire service, firefighters are available in a matter of seconds – a huge difference in time from someone mobilised from home." ‘Need to answer’ Sir Ken insisted the review was about adjusting the service to current needs, not cutting it. He said: "When I was a firefighter, fire deaths in the home were 700 and 800 a year. Now, they’re 180 a year. "It’s a really good news story, but the service itself must adapt and change, not only to maintain that fire safety and prevention front, but to adapt its service. "So why have – even though those fires have gone down 40% – the number of firefighters remained broadly the same. "It’s a question that the local authorities and fire authorities will need to address and need to answer." He told the Today programme "increasing retained [on-call] firefighters from 10% to 40% would save £130m". Ministers will now consider the findings. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was created on 1 April, replacing the country’s previous eight regional services. The Scottish government said savings could be made by pooling resources into one, therefore protecting front-line staff and services. There is a new headquarters in Perth, with three operational "hubs" in the north, west and east of Scotland.

London fire cuts 'risk six-minute response failure in 40 wards'

London Fire Brigade warning SOURCE: BBC Fire crews will be unable to reach an extra 40 London wards within the six-minute target if plans to close 12 fire stations go ahead, it has been claimed. London Fire Brigade (LFB) said the 40 wards would join 267 wards currently performing outside target. Its figures indicate first response times would increase by over a minute in 34 wards. But the brigade said over half of all wards in London would fall within the six-minute target. The closure of more than 10% of fire stations and the loss of more than 500 jobs were proposed by London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson in a bid to save nearly £29m over two years. The plan is open to public consultation until 17 June. LFB’s target is to get a first fire engine to an emergency within an average of six minutes and a second within eight minutes. The document indicates the worst affected ward would be Clapham Town where the first response time would increase from nearly four minutes to nearly double that figure. Green Party Assembly Member Darren Johnson, a member of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (LFEPA) which governs the fire service, was among those who requested the figures. He said it "proved" some local neighbourhoods will be "badly hit" by station closures. He added: "These unnecessary closures are a result of the Mayor’s trifling 7p a week council tax cut. "A delay in response times can literally mean the difference between life and death." The Mayor of London’s office was approached to respond to this but did not. Labour’s fire service spokesman on the London Assembly, Navin Shah, said the increases were "truly scandalous". LFB’s data model uses fives years of incident locations and calibrates them against demand frequency and response performance in one year, 2011/12. A spokeswoman for LFB said the proposals sought to keep London-wide response targets. She said: "As is the case now, over half of all London wards would, on average, continue to get a first response within the six minute target if the proposals are agreed. "London would continue to receive a very good service, compared to other emergency services and other parts of the country."

A pair of Cursor 13 engines form a Twin Engine Power Pack producing in excess of 1,000hp, giving the SuperDragon 2 impressive performance, capable of a top speed of 135km/h and accelerating from 0-80km/h in under 25 seconds. The rear-mounted engines combine with a newly-developed Crash-Fire-Rescue truck body to enable Pump & Roll functionality from upwards of 900rpm, with a maximum pump output of 10,000-litres/minute from the 17,000-litre water tank and 2,100-litre foam tank. Cursor 13 engines feature total electronic management and innovative technology such as the Electronic Unit Injector system, Variable Geometry Turbo with a waste gate valve, and Selective Catalytic Reduction after treatment system for Euro V versions, to minimise Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions. “Reliability is everything when fire and emergency vehicles are called into action, and that is a focus across the entire FPT Industrial range of engines,” said Massimo Siracusa, FPT Industrial’s Vice President of Product Engineering. “The Cursor 13 offers outstanding dependability in heavy duty vehicles, along with high power output and density as well as plenty of torque. Fuel consumption is low and the service intervals are the best in its class. “The engine is incredibly robust, however its light weight ensures fire fighting vehicles have more capacity to carry important equipment and extinguishing liquid to handle the job at hand.” The heart of the engine features state-of-the-art technology and a sophisticated design, delivering high performance and crisp throttle response, despite impressive fuel efficiency and low emissions. With a bore and stroke of 135mm x 150mm, for a ratio of 1.11, the 1,320kg Cursor 13 boasts a compression ratio of 16.5:1. FPT Industrial’s Electronic Unit Injector (EUI) system uses an electro-injector on each cylinder, pressuring fuel mechanically up to 1,800 bar, ensuring extreme precision in the quantity of the fuel delivered through a dedicated cam system. The injection system’s timing is managed by the Electronic Control Unit (ECU), while the EUI avoids the need for periodical recalibration. With an aftercooler, the electronic Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) optimises air delivery into the turbo based on engine speed, turbocharger speed, boost pressure, accelerator pedal position and engine brake control position. The system maximises torque throughout the rev range, enhancing outright performance and drivability, while reducing lag. The ECU also controls the decompression engine brake system, which delivers superior engine braking performance, lower running costs and improved driving comfort and safety. Born at FPT Industrial’s R&D facility in Switzerland in 1991 and proven in over 350,000 units, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) was selected as the company’s after treatment system to address the Euro IV and Euro V emission regulations introduced in 2005. Beyond treating NOx compounds formed during the combustion process through the use of the additive AdBlue in the exhaust system, SCR technology also improves fuel consumption and running costs, and increases specific power output. The compact packaging of the SCR system minimises installation space and overall weight, increasing the vehicle’s payload. Similarly, overall engine dimensions of 1,359mm (length), 1,008mm (width) and 1,171mm (height) have been enabled through a focus on practical packaging, including an integrated Closed Crankcase Ventilation (CCV) system while the water-oil heat exchanger and water pumps are contained within the cylinder block. The design also diminishes the risk of leakage to enhance reliability and efficiency, in conjunction with the use of solutions such as high precision scraper rings, an advanced lubrication system to minimise engine blow-by and engine oil degradation, and a finely-tuned oil filter system incorporating a filtration membrane with micro-pores. Through refined parts such as the overhead camshaft, timing system with super-finished helical gears and an additional mating plate on the cylinder block, the structural strength of the powerplant is high, reducing engine noise and vibration. The Cursor 13 offers a range of customisation options to suit the end user’s requirements. These include air compressor, air filter, hydraulic pump and radiator solutions and interfaces, and aluminium or pressed steel oil pumps. Like the entire FPT Industrial range, the Cursor 13 is backed by a worldwide technical support network all designed to minimise downtime, starting with maintenance updates, monitoring and diagnosis through the ECU. TetraKO appoints Randy Wahl as sales manager

Wahl worked for 12 years with the Waterous Company  TetraKO, LLC, the fire suppression subsidiary of EarthClean Corporation, announced today that Randy Wahl has joined the company as Sales Manager. Wahl will report to Scott Bocklund, President of TetraKO, LLC.
