Since the financial crisis in Greece, an increasing number of people are reliant upon social assistance. Consequently, in 2012 the ‘Greek Aid’ association (Griechenlandhilfe) voluntarily assumed the task of providing nationwide, humanitarian support for hospitals and other social institutions. These include the Greek fire services, which urgently require new equipment. Therefore, Rosenbauer has now handed over 240 pairs of Safe Grip 2 gloves and eleven pairs of Austria boots to ‘Greek Aid’, which will soon be sent to Greece and distributed throughout the country. The heat-resistant gloves and slip-on boots with puncture-resistant soles offer safety for every operation. Something, which in view of the numerous operations annually – of which 32,000 are fires – the more than 15,600 Greek fire-fighters truly need. With this donation, Rosenbauer has not only once again demonstrated its sense of social responsibility, but also improved the safety of Greek fire-fighters.

Global safety equipment manufacturer MSA Safety Inc has announced that it has acquired Senscient, Inc., a leader in laser- based gas detection technology that can be used in a broad range of industrial, oil and gas production and petrochemical processing applications. The acquisition of Senscient (pronounced Sen-Sy-Ent) strengthens MSA’s leading position in the global market for fixed gas and flame detection (FGFD) systems, representing a key step in the execution of MSA’s Core Product growth strategy. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Senscient’s patented Enhanced Laser Diode Spectroscopy (ELDSTM) technology was launched in 2009. Capable of detecting a wide range of toxic and flammable gases, ELDSTM technology eliminates false alarms and enables faster, more reliable detection of hazardous gases, thereby improving worksite safety while reducing operational costs. “This technology is significantly changing the way facility operators protect their personnel and assets from leaks of hazardous gases,” said Gustavo Lopez, MSA’s Global Product Business Director for Detection. “High false alarm rates, slow detection and poor reliability are problems that frequently plague worksite operations when dealing with gas leak detection.” Senscient’s ELDSTM technology broadens MSA’s opportunities in areas of the world where oil production has the additional danger of high concentrations of H2S, like the Middle East and Kazakhstan, as well as across various industry applications, including gas and pipeline processing, ammonia and fertilizer production, refineries and petrochemicals production, waste water, photovoltaic, marine, and the process analytics industry. “MSA’s commitment to safety and technical leadership is the perfect cultural fit with Senscient and our core values,” said Rajat Barua, President and CEO of Senscient. “For us, this combination delivers significant value and provides Senscient with an excellent platform to drive accelerated adoption of our technology with customers around the world.” Kerry Bove, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer for MSA, who is also responsible for the leading the company’s acquisition activities, added that the acquisition of Senscient immediately strengthens and fast tracks MSA’s new product development efforts in the area of laser-based, open-path gas detection. “Senscient’s innovative technology provides the perfect complement to our existing fixed gas and flame detection portfolio. Equally important, it provides further technical and competitive differentiation to MSA’s fixed gas and flame detection business,” Mr. Bove concluded.

Pierce Manufacturing Inc has placed a pair of Pierce® Quantum® quint 105-foot heavy-duty aerial ladders into service with the Oshkosh Fire Department in Oshkosh, Wis. The apparatus feature TAK-4® independent front suspension and the TAK-4 T3™ steering system, combining mechanical rear steering with a fully independent rear suspension for unmatched maneuverability, ride quality, traction, and stability. “With the advent of our TAK-4 T3 steering system, we’ve set a new benchmark for performance, control, and fire-fighter comfort,” said Jim Johnson, Oshkosh Corporation Executive Vice President and President of the Fire & Emergency segment and Pierce Manufacturing. “It’s engineered for military-grade strength, and is the perfect complement for heavier apparatus. We’re very excited to have these aerial trucks equipped with TAK-4 T3 on duty in the fire department of our parent company’s namesake hometown.” “These new Quantum quint vehicles respond as both engines and ladder trucks, and we put a lot of miles on them over some very rough and narrow streets,” said Tim Franz, Fire Chief at the Oshkosh Fire Department in Oshkosh, Wis. “The turning radius is excellent, and the handling is equally impressive. We notice a big difference when driving over railroad tracks and negotiating tight 90-degree turns. Even when pulling out of the station, we don’t get the twist and body roll we normally experience with a straight axle truck. It’s pretty amazing.” Each of the identical pair of Quantum aerial ladders are equipped with a Detroit DD13 500 hp engine and a Command Zone™ advanced electronics and control system. The vehicles feature a GVW rating of 74,800 lbs. and the tandem rear axles carry a GAWR rating of 52,000 lbs. The cab includes seating for four fire-fighters, a forward facing EMS compartment, and frontal impact and side roll protection systems. The four-section, 105-foot aerial device includes remote tip controls, a 2-way intercom, a LyfePulley rescue system, and LED rung lighting. The fire-fighting system includes a 1,500-gpm single stage PUC pump, a 500-gallon water tank, and low mount crosslays. “Our purchasing committee specified all aspects of the vehicles, and we went with the Quantum chassis as our fire-fighters appreciate the room in the cab and overall handling” Franz explained. “We’ve heard nothing but positive feedback on our new quints, and that’s a big deal. Our fire-fighters are really happy with them.”

Being the smallest Nordic country hasn’t stopped GearTeam in Demark leading the charge for fire safety on construction sites. GearTeam, based in Hillerød and an importer and supplier of fire emergency products, is the latest company to become a WES+ distributor, meaning that now Ramtech Electronics, manufacturer of the WES+ system, currently has distributors in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Austria. The management team at GearTeam is now focussed on delivering the message that WES+ is the only wireless fire alarm system in Europe to comply with the relevant sections of EN 54. This is a mandatory European standard that specifies requirements and laboratory testing for every component of a fire detection and fire alarm system. Fire on Danish construction projects, as in all countries, is an ever present danger to personnel, assets and people living or working nearby. WES+ tackles this problem because it is designed specifically for construction sites, compliant with EN 54 and, being wireless, a very user friendly system. In the case of GearTeam in Denmark, WES+’s site wide alarm will ensure that personnel working on site will immediately evacuate to a point of safety, whilst rescue services can be alerted sooner, minimising the risk of the fire spreading. During the day, manual call points, installed on site in accordance with the project’s Fire Plan, are interlinked to create a completely secure mesh network so that all areas receive the same audible and visual alert signal. The site wide alarm can be manually triggered by personnel from any call point. Optional heat or smoke detection units provide automatic cover 24/7, ensuring that the site is protected even when personnel are not present. Jesper B. Løvbo, founder of GearTeam, said: “Fires on construction sites are a serious concern for all our customers who operate in this sector. WES+ provides them with a technology-based solution for ensuring their personnel and physical assets are protected. Based on the excellent feedback we have had so far from the marketplace we have already taken the decision to allocate dedicated resources to support the WES+ opportunity in Denmark.”
