We’re extremely proud to be selected for this major purchase,” said Matt McLeish, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing of the Fire & Emergency segment. “The Pierce Quantum stands without peer and is among the industry’s most capable chassis. It is tailor made to meet the diverse requirements of this sizable department.” Steven Witt is an Assistant Fire Chief at Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department and a 31-year member of the organisation. “With these purchases, we are in the process of standardising our emergency response fleet around the Quantum chassis,” Witt explained. “We like the Quantum’s roomy interior, the flat cab floor, and the excellent outward visibility. The two Pierce Quantum 105-foot heavy-duty ladders are each powered by a Detroit DD13 525 hp big block engine riding on a tandem rear axle configuration. The vehicles include Command Zone™ advanced electronics, frontal and side impact protection, a 12-inch raised and notched roof cab, seating for five fire-fighters, and Pierce PS6™ premium air-ride seats for the driver and officer. The fire-fighting system includes a 500-gallon water tank, crosslays and speedlays, and a remote controlled monitor. The two Pierce Quantum rear mounted aerial platforms are each equipped with a Detroit DD13 525 hp big block engine riding on a tandem rear axle configuration, and with TAK-4 independent front suspension. The cab seats five fire-fighters and also offers frontal impact and side roll protection systems. The aerial platform provides a large basket, two wireless remote control monitors, Lyfe rescue tool accessories, breathing air to the tip, and LED lighting along the entire length of the ladder and at the basket. Cy-Fair is located in the northwest region of Harris County, Tex. At one time, Cy-Fair VFD was considered the largest multi-service volunteer department in North America. The department provides fire, EMS, and dispatch services within a protection area that encompasses 164 square miles and is home to 440,000 citizens. Its total staff of 600 includes 350 volunteer fire-fighters. The department operates 12 fire stations, with a 13th due to open in 2017. Royal Wharf Riverside development benefits benefits from Cygnus wireless fire alarm system

On another major London development that’s currently underway, Bull Products’ Cygnus wireless fire alarm system is being used for fire safety during the construction phase. Royal Wharf is a visionary mixed development located in East London’s Royal Docks on 40 acres of land where nearly 3,400 homes are being created as well as commercial, retail, leisure and educational facilities for a new and vibrant London district. This brand new riverside district of Royal Wharf builds on the success of Canary Wharf and the 2012 Olympics and underlines the movement to the east of London’s centre of gravity. It is due for completion in 2019. The Cygnus system has been installed widely across the Royal Wharf development. Some 249 Cygnus fire call points are located in stairwells and on escape routes, all linked to a central Cygnus CYG1 control panel. Each of the Cygnus fire call point alarms are IP65 rated and so can be used externally. All are linked to the central control panel, and each alarm has a 110 decibel sounder and an LED beacon for visual alerts. The Cygnus control panel captures data wirelessly from all the fire alarm call points and shows active alarms and faults and all events are recorded into a file which can be viewed or downloaded. Amongst other features of the control panel is an evacuate site function which can be used in case of an emergency. Electrical and mechanical subcontractors on the development, EMS are delighted with the performance of the Cygnus system. Sean Gretka, Senior Estimator for EMS commented, “Since being introduced to the Cygnus wireless alarm products, our confidence in this system just continues to grow with every project we install it on. It is easy to use, even easier to install and is fit for purpose in the construction industry. This accompanied with Bull Products’ aftercare and customer support makes them an easy recommendation to any of our clients.” The Cygnus alarm system can link as many as 480 alarm and detector units in different zones on a site, and individual units can be fire alarm call points, first aid alerts, combined call points and first aid alerts, smoke detectors or heat detectors. The CE marked Cygnus system has been developed for use on construction sites where there is dense concrete and steel structured buildings and areas where there are many other radio frequencies in operation, and so particular attention has been given to achieving an impressive connection range. Where there are multiple sites within range of each other, the Cygnus system has been designed to operate on different site addresses in order to keep each system separate and free from interference. A major benefit of the Cygnus system is the optional control panel which provides a very sophisticated capability with an event log function which records any events such as an alarm activation, low battery warning, and signal faults, all of which can be viewed if necessary in the history folder held on the panel. The system also has the ability to test all units and has an evacuate function which will act as a call point to the rest of the alarm units. Every device in the system can provide the panel with information at regular intervals. This explicit information confirms the unit is still present and what the battery status of each device is. Known as the ‘heart beat’ this message is monitored by the control panel where fitted and if the ‘heart beat’ is not heard for several intervals, the control panel logs a full status for that unit. A PIR option is now available on any of the modules which can detect an intruder and alert off-site personnel for added safety protection. Bull Products offers a full one-year guarantee on all Cygnus devices and provides high levels of technical, on-site and after-sales service support in addition to its standard maintenance contracts.

New UK Sales Manager for South East England appointed by Advanced

Global fire systems leader Advanced has appointed Ken Bullock as its new Sales Manager for South East England. FM Global develops new fire protection innovation: Thermal radiation-activated sprinklers

Commercial and industrial property insurer FM Global has developed a new design for automatic fire sprinkler protection beyond what can be addressed with current commercially available sprinklers. The sprinklers are designed to activate due to their enhanced sensitivity to thermal radiation from flames and would be suitable for particular applications where a new, specialised sprinkler design would be beneficial, such as sprinkler protection beneath grated mezzanines and special fire hazards such as covered open yard storage. Among the key findings from FM Global’s scientific research: 1. There are scenarios where traditional sprinklers developed for ceiling-level protection might not activate in a timely manner, or not at all, because hot gases from a fire never reach them, despite a fire being physically close. 2. Sprinklers can be designed with enhanced sensitivity to thermal radiation to provide adequate response to the heat from flames of a nearby fire. 3. The sprinklers designed for this study were reliably capable of addressing specialised fire protection scenarios. The complete findings are available free of charge in a new research technical report titled ‘Radiation-Activated Sprinklers’ “Many major developments in sprinkler technology since 1955 have been a result of FM Global’s scientific research,” said Louis A. Gritzo, Ph.D., Vice President, Manager of research at FM Global. “We are freely sharing this patented technology with the fire protection industry to encourage the development of commercially available radiation-activated sprinklers. As a mutually-owned insurer with a unique engineering focus, the availability of such sprinklers will benefit our policyholder-owners by helping them better prevent property loss and be more resilient.”

Eaton selected to keep trampoline centre secure by reaching new heights in fire safety

Eaton was selected by the design and building company behind Wales’ biggest trampoline arena to provide a bespoke mains lighting, emergency lighting and fire alarm solution. Black Circle Design, principal contractor and designer for the Go Air Trampoline Park in Cardiff, opted for an Eaton mains lighting solution that would enhance the aesthetic appeal and comfort of the interior while maximising energy efficiency. The power management company also delivered an emergency lighting scheme and fire alarm system to help the site owners meet their commitment to protecting the safety of staff and visitors, as well as guarding the fabric of the building and its assets. The Go Air Trampoline Park in Cardiff was successfully completed within a demanding seven-week deadline. The 7,315m2 venue, formerly a warehouse, was extensively renovated and now houses 120 trampolines, six supersize foam pits and a dodge ball court. Eaton specialists visited the warehouse at the outset to develop a mains lighting scheme in conjunction with the client’s design team. Eaton then produced and delivered 45 of its class-leading Linergy LEDs, which offer high energy-saving performance and flexibility for large, multi-use buildings. “LED was an absolute must because of energy efficiency and future proofing,” said Mark Elliott, Business Development Manager for lighting and safety products at Eaton. “It also reduces the amount of maintenance required especially now that all the trampolines are in place. The Linergy LED provides 104.62 lumens per watt and when you get over 100 lumens per watt, you get into super-efficient territory. This product also meets the requirements of the enhanced capital allowance scheme, which means any company that invests in this high technology product can offset 20% of the total installation cost against their tax bill.” Eaton also recommended a separate emergency lighting scheme for the trampoline park, which took full advantage of Eaton’s innovative Alfalux Highbay LEDs. Working in partnership with Black Circle Design, Eaton designed the fire alarm solution and supplied its recently launched two-wire fire system, BiWire Ultra. Unlike standard conventional systems, BiWire Ultra allows detectors, sounders and EN54-23 approved visual alarm devices (VADs) to all share the same zone wiring, which can reduce cabling and labour costs. Mark Bond, Director of installation company M J B Electrical and Solar Services Limited, said his team did not encounter any issues, errors or faults. “Despite a tight deadline, Eaton came through with everything they promised,” he said. “Everything that they specified, I bought upfront so I knew I had it on-site. Eaton was always available. If we had any questions or queries, they would be there. When the layout was altered at the last minute, we had to order some additional components and they were there straight away.” Go Air’s Cardiff facility was the first trampoline project that Black Circle Design had worked on with the company and the fact the venture was delivered on time without any problems has helped Black Circle Design win further contracts. “We are really pleased with Eaton’s products and are looking to install both mains and emergency lighting in future Go Air sites,” said Dan Jones, Managing Director of Black Circle Design. “We also hope to provide Eaton’s fire alarm system in these projects as well.” Lisa Entwistle-Evans, Marketing Director at Go Air, concluded: “The Go Air group is expanding rapidly across the UK and the plan is to open another five by November. Getting the trampoline parks up and running requires a multi-partnership approach, working against tight deadlines, and Eaton has been a key player. The health and safety of our staff, customers and the premises is our main priority and Eaton’s fire alarm system and lighting solutions have been important in ensuring Wales’ biggest trampoline park has the protection it needs.”

No working smoke alarms in vast majority of 2017 fatal fires

Five of the seven fatal fires since the turn of the year had no working smoke alarms fitted in their homes, London Fire Brigade announced recently. The information is being released in an unprecedented move ahead of the inquests in a bid to avoid further lives being lost. The Brigade says it is deeply concerned that lack of smoke detection in homes is putting Londoners at risk. Since the beginning of 2017 sadly ten people have died in fires across the capital. In all but one of these cases, the Brigade was only called when a neighbour noticed the fire. In the other instance the smoke alarm operated and was linked to a telecare provider who called the Brigade. Fires in dwellings with one or more fire deaths Over half of all dwelling fires that the Brigade attended last year did not have a smoke alarm that worked or sounded which often means the fire remains undiscovered for some time. In fatal fires the trend is even more worrying. Two years ago a smoke alarm sounded at 74% of fatal fires. Last year the figure was 41% and so far this year only 29%. ‘We believe that many of these deaths could have been avoided’ London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton said: “While the coroner has yet to determine cause of death we believe that many of these deaths could have been avoided if the victims had working smoke alarms. “Often the most deadly fires are small fires that quietly smoulder and smoke while people are asleep or in a different room. “Without the early warning of a smoke alarm, people can be over come with smoke before the fire is discovered. “Please fit at least one smoke alarm on every floor of your property and regularly check them. The quicker fire-fighters are alerted, the quicker we can help save lives and prevent fires from spreading. Get out, stay out and dial 999. “It is devastating that in 2017 people are dying from fire in homes without life saving smoke alarms on every level of their property. “Last year we visited over 70,000 homes of London’s most vulnerable carrying out home fire safety visits but there is a lot more we all must do to educate people about the benefits of smoke alarms for everyone and sprinklers for the most vulnerable.” ‘The difference between life and death’ Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, said: “It is deeply concerning that Londoners are risking their lives by not having working smoke alarms in their homes. “Smoke alarms provide a vital warning in case of fire and can mean the difference between life and death. I urge Londoners to take the Fire Brigade’s advice and fit alarms in your home, helping them in the fantastic work they do every day to keep us safe.” Londoners should always ensure you have at least one smoke alarm fitted on the ceiling of every floor in your home – ideally placing smoke alarms in every room of your home where there is a fire risk, and linking all the alarms together. Fires in dwellings If a smoke alarm is only fitted in the hallway, should a fire start in the bedroom, the occupant’s life may already be at risk before the alarm would activate. Eight of the ten people who died were over 65 years of age with a number of those in receipt of some form of care. The Brigade are asking care staff, neighbours and family members who look after or visit some of our most vulnerable residents to get in touch with their local fire and rescue service if they notice any of the critical early warning signs that a person is at risk of a fire, to get advice on preventing a blaze. Classic tell tale signs include burn marks on carpets from cigarettes, smoking in bed or a smoke alarm that has run out of battery power. Home fire safety visits, are a free service, where fire-fighters give potentially life saving information on how to prevent fires, and fit free smoke alarms where needed. These are particularly targeted at the capital’s most vulnerable people as a previous report showed they were 18 times less likely to have a fire if they receive a home fire safety visit. Fire fatalities include any fatal casualty which is the direct or indirect result of injuries caused by a fire incident. Even if the casualty dies after the fire, any fatality whose cause is attributed to a fire is included. There are also occasional cases where a Coroner may rule that the fire was not the cause of death. For these reasons, the number of fatalities is subject to revision.

Rosenbauer opens new UK Yorkshire-based headquarters as part of the company’s growth plans

Rosenbauer opens new UK Yorkshire-based headquarters as part of the company’s growth plans Rosenbauer UK have recently commissioned their new 20,000 square foot (1.900 m²) Yorkshire-based factory as part of both ongoing and further projected growth plans. The requirement for the new base is due to an ongoing growth of the firefighting market in the UK. The factory in Meltham, Holmfirth has undergone significant investment to create a comfortable ‘shop floor’ and new offices and conferencing facilities. All-in-all, the intention is to run an efficient and state-of-the-art fire appliance manufacturing and service facility. And as the service team grows, Rosenbauer offers one of the UK’s most enviable service departments. Reliable partner in UK Rosenbauer has had a presence in UK since the 1980s, so the top model among ARFF vehicles, the PANTHER, is already stationed at most airports on the island. In 2014, Rosenbauer acquired a substantial stake in North Fire, which subsequently began trading as Rosenbauer UK with around 10 employees. Rosenbauer managed to break into the local English market with personal protective equipment, especially helmets, of which so far more than 60,000 units are in use. But aerial rescue devices from Rosenbauer have also already been introduced in England. And now also use of the municipal vehicles of the AT and CL series is on the rise. With elaborate decal application and also many other technical adjustments, the Rosenbauer vehicles are given the original “British Look.” At the new factory, minor adjustments are made by Rosenbauer UK, so that the vehicles comply with British standards. A comprehensive service par excellence is one of the key success factors in England. This also applies to Rosenbauer vehicles and Rosenbauer helmets, which are serviced in Meltham, Holmfirth. Demonstration of Technology Day Together with the announcement of the new factory move, Rosenbauer UK announced plans for the subsequent “Demonstration of Technology Day” where invited delegates will witness a demonstration of Rosenbauer’s latest in vehicle and equipment technology. The event looks likely to demonstrate and explain the quality, function and tactical deployment for the launch of Rosenbauer’s new AT-Stinger. The phenomenal appliance has added much welcomed, ‘firepower’ to Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service’s front line. Following the demonstration of technology will be a formal conference section of the day. Speaking at the event will be Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service Chief Fire Officer, Chris Kenny, Rosenbauer Group CEO, Dr. Dieter Siegel, and Rosenbauer UK Managing Director, Oliver North.
