Life safety installers quote skills shortage, study by Hochiki Europe finds

Life safety installers quote skills shortage, study by Hochiki Europe finds Some 95 per cent of life safety installers think that the industry isn’t doing enough to provide training for the next generation of professionals, according to new research by Hochiki Europe. With recent figures from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) suggesting that the shortage of electricians, such as life safety installers, is at its highest level for four years, the skills gap is a pressing issue across the built environment, posing a risk to the industry’s future growth. The study of European fire safety and emergency lighting installers carried out by the leading life safety system manufacturer, found that only two fifths (39 per cent) of respondents work for a company that offers an apprenticeship programme. Just 17 per cent reported that their employer offers a graduate programme to attract university leavers to the industry. Speaking about the findings, Ray Turner, General Manager – Operations at Hochiki Europe, commented: “The skills gap both in our own sector and across the built environment has been a pressing concern for a number of years but, as the survey shows, our industry is doing too little to address the issue. “If the industry is to continue to grow into the future, it is imperative that manufacturers and installers create the training opportunities necessary to equip the next generation with the skills they need to build a fulfilling career as life safety professionals.” Another major cause for concern for installers that was highlighted in the study was the lack of enthusiasm among school leavers for the life safety sector as a potential career avenue. Four fifths (78 per cent) of respondents felt that young people don’t know what jobs are available in the life safety sector. A further two thirds (68 per cent) worried that young people don’t view the industry as an employment option. Some 93 per cent said that the sector had a responsibility to educate secondary school pupils on the range of life safety roles available to combat this issue. Ray Turner concluded: “At the same time as creating great apprenticeship and graduate programmes to attract people to the sector, we need to do more to reach out to students while they are still at school and thinking about their future careers, and highlight the benefits of working in the industry. “Working closely with schools and universities – as individual companies and in partnership with others in the industry – will be crucial to help promote the array of career options, and the paths into the sector. Taking this kind of action now, we can ensure we have the expertise we need not just to thrive today, but to face new challenges tomorrow.” For almost 100 years Hochiki Corporation has led the way in the design and manufacturer of innovative life safety solutions. Its commercial and industrial fire detection and emergency lighting products have acquired global acceptance as the benchmark for high-integrity and long-term reliability.

Tiny Green PC Fitlet brings dependable connectivity to innovative fire-safety networking solution

Drax Technology, one of the UK’s leading independent providers of integrated fire protection and alarm management solutions, has announced that it is using Tiny Green PC Fitlet fanless mini-computers for its AMX system for centralising control of complex fire and security networks. The decision was made on the basis of Fitlet’s high reliability, powerful computer performance and rich connectivity. Ensuring the safety of people and places in the event of fire is a mandatory mission for managers of buildings or workplaces. Large organisations and sites with multiple buildings must be monitored continuously and tested regularly. Drax Technology’s AMX alarm-management system streamlines these tasks for building operators. “Professional fire alarm contractors choose our AMX software and SMaRT interfaces to centralise the monitoring and management of multiple alarm systems, which may be installed in a single building, several buildings on a site, or distributed over a wide geographical area,” explains Keith Minster, Product Manager at Drax Technology. But premises can often have separate fire-monitoring networks using different protocols installed over time by various contractors. AMX can connect and centralise disparate systems which simplifies management, expansion or upgrading of any existing alarm system. “Our software can work with many types of systems, which communicate data in a variety of differing formats,” comments Keith “and bring all the information together, presented in a single, coherent and easy to understand user interface.” AMX software runs on a dedicated PC and can interpret the data from a wide variety of systems. Security or safety personnel in a central control room can monitor the status of the entire fire-safety infrastructure in real-time. They can isolate devices, identify faults and access control panels remotely. AMX maintains an electronic log of events such as alarms, tests and maintenance, and generates reports that help verify maintenance is being carried out correctly and demonstrate compliance with legal obligations. Each individual fire system is connected to the central AMX computer by a SMaRT interface unit. The computer at the heart of this unit is Fitlet, an ultra-small fanless computer the size of your hand, packing a powerful 1GHz AMD A4 quad-core CPU and extensive connectivity, chosen for its ease of use, small size and excellent reliability.
