UK manufacturer Nittan launches new 'elite' partner and distributor programme

Nittan Europe, a UK manufacturer of conventional and addressable fire detection products sold globally, has launched the Nittan Elite Partner and Nittan Elite Distributor programme. The programmes have been developed to acknowledge and reward a select group of installation partners and product distributors that have shown commitment to promoting the Nittan brand and have undertaken product training to a high level in order to ensure the uppermost standards of customer service. The first companies to be awarded Elite status by Nittan are Fire Technology Ireland (FTI), Dublin, as an Elite Partner, plus EU Fire & Security, Rochdale, Acorn Fire & Security Blackburn and Detection Supplies, Fordingbridge in the Elite Distributor category. The latter were presented with official wall plaques at FIREX 2017 by Nittan Europe Managing Director Mr Kadokura. “Nittan has built an enviable reputation for first class fire detection products, but it’s essential to back that up with quality support” states Lee James, General Manager – Product Marketing, Nittan Europe. “Our new Elite programme identifies those installers and distributors that demonstrate loyalty to Nittan and have taken the time to invest in the brand by undertaking rigorous training on the full product range. As a manufacturer our end user contact is minimal, these customer facing companies are often the first experience people will have of Nittan so their product knowledge and commitment to Nittan is exceptionally important and deserves to be recognised. The key benefit for Elite members is that we can direct new customer enquiries to them as we know they are a safe pair of hands!” Nittan will further expand the Elite scheme by monitoring and promoting further installation partners and product distributors to Elite status once key milestones have been achieved. The launch of the Nittan Elite Partner and Elite Distributor programme is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to providing the best support possible for customers and comes close on the heels of the opening of a new Training Centre at Nittan’s Head Office in Old Woking, Surrey. The Nittan Group has been at the forefront of the international fire protection industry since 1954 and has sales, R&D and manufacturing bases in four countries, including the UK. Homes near Manila's Malacanang Palace hit by flames, leaving residents homeless

Residents of the San Miguel district in Manila, located in the Philippines, were forced to evacuate their homes on the 16th August after a fire broke out, leaving many homeless. Families affected by the blaze waited directly by the nearby Malacanang Palace gates with their pets, furniture and clothes while they waited for either assistance or a go-to signal why authorities which would allow them to return to their households. According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire struck at around 3.30am on the 16th August in Barangay 645, Zone 67, and the fire itself was declared as under control by around 7am. However, by that point, 2000 people and close to 400 families were left homeless according to Joel Coronel, the Manila Police District (MPD) Chief Superintendent. As well as this, Coronel also claimed that 80% of Barangay 645 had been impacted by the fire, which emerged from a house containing no electricity. At time of wiring, the police believe that the fire started after a candle was left unattended, however they aren’t ruling out the possibility that the candle was potentially used in a drug session.

Nittan smoke detectors protect Italian UNESCO world heritage site, the leaning tower of Piza

Nittan fire detection equipment has been installed in to the UNESCO World heritage site Piazza del Duomo in Pisa, Italy as part of an integrated fire and security system designed and installed by Nittan agent EL.MO. Spa. Piazza del Duomo is a magnificent square that represents the best example of the Pisa Romanesque style as well as being home to four outstanding monuments: the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Camposanto (cemetery) and the world famous “Leaning” Tower of Pisa. In addition, there are two museums – the Sinopie Museum which hosts the big preparatory drawings recovered beneath the frescoes decorating the Camposanto and the Opera del Duomo Museum which shows the history of Pisa art and sculpture of the Middle Ages. EL.MO. Spa. who have been a leading Italian fire and security organisation since 1975 and a long term Nittan partner, were selected by Opera della Primaziale Pisana (OPA) – a non-profit organisation which oversees the Piazza del Duomo – as these historically significant sites and precious works of art require round the clock protection afforded by a highly reliable integrated security and fire protection system. The EL.MO. Spa. proposal met the exacting requirements, utilising both existing equipment where possible and seamlessly intergating new devices; delivered by a company with over 40 years experience in designing, producing and supplying intrusion prevention, fire prevention, video surveillance and access control systems both nationally and internationally. Nittan fire detection devices were specified by EL.MO for this prestigious project due to their exceptional reliability, compatibility with EL.MO’s FX series of analogue addressable control units and unique features, such as a 360° OMNIVIEW LED indicator which permits clear and visible indication of the sensor’s operation from any angle. Nittan devices have been installed within the Camposanto, the Cathedral, two museums and within Piazza del Duomo’s administrative offices. An exceptionally large fire detection system, it features 1,000 zones and seven fire detection control units. The fire detection system has been integrated into a new security system which features 150 CCTV cameras, a site wide access control system and intrusion detection. One of Dubai's tallest buildings catches ablaze for the second time in two years

Dubai’s residential 79-storey skyscraper, the Torch Tower, was subjected to a huge fire on the 3rd August – which is the second fire on a large scale the building has suffered in the last two years. Civil defence workers in the United Arab Emirates city managed to successfully evacuate the building and the fire was swiftly brought under control, which is an incredible achievement given the scale of the blaze. At time of writing, it’s unclear as to what caused the blaze at what is one of the tallest buildings in the world, but the main reason as to why it spread is down to external cladding. One of the key reasons for there being no fatalities was due to the construction and design of the buildings, which enabled firefighters to fight the blaze successfully while residents could escape via safety zones, which had no fire or smoke. Back in 2015, a blaze at the building saw hundreds of people evacuated from the Torch Tower, and thankfully, there were no casualties.

Thousands of music lovers forced to evacuate Barcelona festival due to fire

Electronic Dance Music (EDM) festival UNITE With Tomorrowland, based in Barcelona, had to evacuate 22,000 music fans after a devastating fire broke out on the festival’s main stage following a technical fault. The event, which is only a one day event, was scheduled to go on until 3am – with a headline set from Steve Aoki – however the fire put an end to those plans as festival-goers were rapidly evacuated from the city’s Parc de Can Zam into a safe place. Thankfully, no serious injuries have been reported and it appears that the evacuation was a resounding success, though some festival attendees were – perhaps understandably – treated for anxiety following the blaze. The fire was caused following a technical malfunction, and was so severe that it’s possible that the structure at the festival was at genuine risk of collapsing. An investigation into the matter is ongoing at time of writing.

Wildfires in south-eastern France force 10,000 people to evacuate

South-East France was struck by wildfire in late July, with officials evacuating over 10,000 people overnight in an attempt to avoid mass casualty. The fires, which were in Bormes-les-Mimoses, located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, were tackled by hundreds of firefighters, but the nature of the fire caused France to ask their EU neighbours for additional help in regards to tackling the blaze. 15.4 square miles of land along the Mediterranean coast have been affected by the inferno, which has directly impacted the mountainous interior as well as the island of Corsica, which has seen hundreds leave their homes. From the 24th to the 26th of July, over 4000 fire fighters and troops supported by water bombers had been deployed to try and control the fire, and at least 12 fire officers have been injured from tackling the blazes, with 15 police officers also being affected by smoke inhalation. Popular resort Saint-Tropez has been hit with one of the worst bouts of fire, while tourists staying in the region – which doubles or even triples in population in the summer months – have been told to stay on the beaches amongst the cold winds, and there have been as many as 3000 people doing so.

Film shows human cost of slowing 999 response times

A new film released at the end of May called The Firefighters’ Dilemma is calling for the government to set national standards to improve emergency response times. The film shows a pensioner trapped inside a burning flat. The first fire engine arrives, but the second is some way behind. The firefighters are desperate to go in and save ‘Alice’ but they are not supposed to enter the building until the back up crew arrives, for their own safety. They get to work but desperation grows as they wait. Alice’s daughter arrives outside her mother’s flat to see it on fire, growing more frantic with every second that passes. Viewers are left not knowing whether Alice survives, before being asked to sign a petition calling for the government to improve emergency response times by setting national standards. Fire Brigades Union General Secretary Matt Wrack said of The Firefighter’s Dilemma, which was made for the union by Greatcoat Films: “The public need to be made aware that lives are being lost as a direct result of slowing emergency response times. We want this hard hitting film to be shared as widely as possible to spread the message that vulnerable people are being put at serious risk by the late arrival of fire crews.” A real life firefighter who plays one of the firefighters in the film, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “Frontline firefighters bear the brunt of slowing response times, and we have to deal with the consequences when these high stress situations escalate. We want people to feel safe when they call us out.” The film can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NBiXjbdbxg

LFB fund targets most vulnerable to reduce fire risk

More than 10,000 fire retardant bedding packs, night dresses, sofa throws, ashtrays and other fire prevention kits are being funded by the London Fire Brigade for the capital’s most vulnerable residents. Figures from the LFB show that last year, two thirds of those who died in accidental fires lived alone and over a third had mental health issues. One in three accidental fatal fires were caused by smoking. To combat this, more than £2million in fire prevention grants have been awarded from the Brigade’s Community Safety Investment Fund, set up to help protect individuals and communities across London that most need it. The Brigade’s Assistant Commissioner for Fire Safety, Dan Daly said: “Our crews know their local community well and this fund has allowed Borough Commanders to apply for bespoke fire prevention projects to help those most at risk in their communities. Just a few of the grants that have been approved include: £193,000 for three sprinkler systems to be installed in housing blocks and 150 sets of bedding in Southwark £30,000 for water misting systems. Smoke detectors and 180 sets of fire retardant bedding, nightwear and sofa throws in Camden. Sprinkler systems work in a similar way to traditional sprinkler systems but spray a fine water mist and are placed where people are most likely to fall asleep like above a bed or a settee £28,000 for 400 arson proof letterboxes, 100 sets of fire retardant bedding and 50 sets of pyjamas in Bexley £10,000 for telecare smoke alarms with provision for upgraded services to existing systems (to include inter-linked fire detection; smoke, fire and carbon dioxide detection) in Waltham Forest. £9,700 for 45 sets of bedding, 75 sofa throws, 75 sets of nightwear, 100 carpet sprays and 130 ashtrays in Hackney. caption: Bromley’s Borough Commander Terry Gooding with resident Mr Knowles and fire retardant bedding.

Fire safety progress as 70% of event visitors recognise evacuation responsibilities

At this year’s Health & Safety Event at the NEC in Birmingham, Evac+Chair International found that 68% of surveyed visitors were aware of who is responsible for evacuating a building in an emergency. Almost 70% of people questioned knew that the Regulatory Reform (fire safety) Order (RRO) states the ‘Responsible Person’ – usually the business owner – should ensure employees are evacuated safely out of a building. Surveying visitors about diversity and inclusion in their workplaces, Evac+Chair also found that over 60% of people believe their place of employment did consider the modern, diverse workforce when evacuation planning. However, the poll also found disappointing results. 30% of health professionals at the show believed their workplace had no means of escape for people with mobility difficulties whilst only 23% of people surveyed had experienced an evacuation drill in the recommended last six months and 32% of people questioned believed their evacuation equipment is not being used correctly. Gary Hicks, manager of the Evac + Chair DMCC branch in the UAE, said: “Diversity comes in many forms. As well as having people with physical impairments in the workplace, we also now have many older people. That makes accessibility a higher priority for every organisation and has specific implications for those responsible for health and safety practices pertaining to a building.” By law, under the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997, it is the responsibility of the ‘Responsible Person’ to ensure all workers are safely evacuated in the case of an emergency. That usually means the business owner, not the Fire Service or the building owner. Fire risk assessments must therefore consider anyone for whom mobility issues mean that they rely on a lift to move up and down a building. Some of the structural means of escape, including fire stairs, are clearly inappropriate for the mobility impaired. Therefore, the provision of evacuation equipment, such as evac chairs, are vital. Gary continued: “It’s great news that our survey at the Health & Safety Event found almost 70% of visitors know who is responsible for evacuation in an emergency but now we need to do more to educate the other 30% of health and safety managers who may be unaware of basic evacuation measures. Due to our ever-changing, diverse workforce, accessibility for everyone is something that every organisation must be clear on.” Evac+Chair International evacuation chairs are designed to accommodate disabled or mobility impaired people, allowing them to descend a staircase in an emergency situation without the need of great physical strength or lifting.
