Dunedin, New Zealand suburb evacuated overnight following spread of rampant fire

Dunedin, New Zealand suburb evacuated overnight following spread of rampant fire Over 100 homes had to be evacuated in Dunedin, New Zealand, after a massive fire caused widespread destruction, ripping through buildings and a timber yard with 2000 tonnes of dry logs. Late on the 31st of January, the Fire and Emergency services claimed that the fire was contained on three sides, however, a unconfined flank was mainly vegetation and hard to access. Phil Marsh, the incident controller, said that fire crews were working hard to put out spot fires that were being caused by embers being blown into properties. Explaining why people were evacuated, Marsh said that the embers – fused with dry conditions – meant that there was a substantial risk to people’s homes. “The only way to keep people safe was to pull people from out of the area,” Marsh said. “We’ve been putting warnings out, most of last week and this week, about the spike in temperatures… It’s out of the ordinary, these are extreme fire conditions.” Explosions that were reported by witnesses were confirmed to be drums of tar, while Marsh claimed that – thus far – no houses have been burnt. “It’s been about 20 to 25 hectares of vegetation including trees that’s been on fire and because of the industrial buildings and the woodpiles that have been nearby it’s caused spotting of fires in amongst residential areas,” he explained. “So we’ve had to evacuate approximately 100 houses in the residential area.”

Tragic welfare home fire in Sapporo, Japan kills 11

Tragic welfare home fire in Sapporo, Japan kills 11 After a fire ripped through a Japanese residential facility – put in place for people in financial difficulty – on the 31st January, 11 people have lost their lives. TV footage from the country’s public broadcaster, NHK, showed the house completely taken over by flames, and of the 16 people that were living at the home, just five were successfully rescued by firefighters battling the fire. The three-storey building, which is located in the northern city of Sapporo, was the home for mostly elderly residents. NHK reported that the home is run by an organisation who provide affordable accommodation for people, while also helping people on welfare find work. Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the blaze, which evoked memories of a fire in 2010, when a fire killed seven people at a Sapporo nursing home for the elderly.

‘Not enough fire’ to try and take down tragic Lang’ata fire in Kenya

‘Not enough fire’ to try and take down tragic Lang’ata fire in Kenya Survivors of the deadly blaze which ripped through a Kenyan slum, which left four people dead, have spoken out about their battle to save their homes, and described it as “like fighting in hell.” Residents resorted to using sewage water in an attempt to put out the fires that engulfed the houses in the Lang’ata region of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. Nixon Korir, the MP for the area, said that when fire engines turned up to tackle the fire, they didn’t have enough water. The fire was eventually extinguished on the 29th of January at 06:00, and pictures that have emerged on social media have shown how people did their utmost to put the fire out with literally anything they could find. Police have launched a formal investigation into the fire, which began at 20:00 on the 28th January, and raged on for 10 hours. It is also feared that a number of bodies may be found when the recovery and clear-up operations begin on the wreckage of the homes. The Deputy President of Kenya, William Ruto, has claimed that the government will spend $490,000 (£347,000) in order to help the victims. However, it remains unclear whether the offer will be enough to calm residents – and the widespread public – over the perceived failings of the fire service, who have come under intense criticism from a large number of people, while people have questioned where the government’s priorities lie.

London Fire Brigade remembers Lambeth blaze 100 years on

London Fire Brigade remembers Lambeth blaze 100 years on A memorial event was held by the London Fire Brigade on the 30th January in order to mark the 100-year anniversary of their largest peacetime loss of life. Back in 1918, seven firefighters tragically died in a fire at a cattle food manufacturers, which was on the Albert Embankment in Lambeth, south London, while several others were also left injured. The event itself took place at the site of the blaze, which subsequently went on to become the brigade’s headquarters for a prolonged period of time, being active from 1937 to 2008. Sub-officers Walter Hall and William Cornford perished in the fire, along with John Coote Johnson, James Fay, Arthur Page, William Nash and Edmund Fairbrother, all of whom were firefighters. Just a week before the fire, Mr Fay had returned from active duty in World War One. The actual cause of the fire was never found out, however, London Fire Brigade believe that the most likely cause for the blaze was rats chewing through electrical cables. As such, the sparks would have then ignited the oil, spices and linseed cake that was stored in the warehouse. The brigade added that heavy smoke and heavy fog “forced the men to wear helmets, which reduced their visibility and meant they could not see as an outer wall collapsed on top of them”. London Fire Brigade’s director of operations, Tom George, said the seven men “represent a long line of brave and remarkable firefighters who to this day continue to put themselves in the line of danger to protect others”.

TRIGEN Automotive rolls out the hooklift foam tender

TRIGEN Automotive rolls out the hooklift foam tender TRIGEN Automotive, a division of HOPE Technik specialising in the manufacture of special function vehicles, including four generations of the iconic Singapore Red Rhino Light Fire Attack Vehicle, has recently rolled out one of its largest firefighting vehicles to date – the Hooklift Foam Tender. Specially developed for Singapore Changi Airport, the Hooklift Foam Tender is a crucial firefighting support vehicle designed to work in tandem with other firefighting vehicles in airport emergency operations. It carries a large hooklift pod containing firefighting foam concentrate and uses an engine driven fire pump to put out large fires effectively. The Hooklift Foam Tender measures 9.2 metres long, 2.8 metres wide and 3.75 metres tall. Despite its size, the firefighting vehicle is able to manoeuvre in narrow spaces, such as airport service roads, within the apron, on the tarmac as well as the service roads of an aircraft fuel farm. Its single stage, centrifugal fire pump is driven by a diesel engine and flows 6,000 litres per minute of water at 10 bar, enabling the large flow monitor located at the rear of the vehicle to achieve a range of 80 metres. The monitor is electronically controlled with a mechanical hand wheel override and is coupled to an aspirating foam branch pipe that produces a consistent foam product during firefighting operations. The stainless steel foam tank holds up to 8,000 litres of foam and the foam pod module can be set down independently from the vehicle. When the foam pod is near empty, the Hooklift Tender returns with another filled foam pod picked up from a nearby station to continue the fire fight. Alternatively, the entire foam pod module that is set down on the ground can serve as a distribution point for foam concentrate to other vehicles. “The Hooklift Foam Tender was developed to handle fuel-related fire incidents in the fastest manner possible,” said George Thu Rein Tun, mechanical engineer of the Hooklift Foam Tender. “With smart packaging, TRIGEN Automotive is honoured to have been able to provide a highly flexible and efficient home-grown firefighting solution for Changi Airport.” TRIGEN Automotive cordially invites exhibitors and trade visitors of Singapore Airshow 2018 who are keen to learn more about the Hooklift Foam Tender’s capabilities to schedule a meeting with our sales team at booth A11 from 6 to 9 February 2018. A private vehicle viewing session will also be held on 9 February for interested parties who have confirmed a meeting with TRIGEN Automotive.
