FIA’s Fire Detection and Alarm Advanced Maintainer unit available to book now

FIA’s Fire Detection and Alarm Advanced Maintainer unit available to book now The Fire Industry Association has launched the Maintainer unit of the qualification pathway.  This unit forms one of the specialist units of the new qualifications that are now available to book for those working in the fire detection and alarm sector.  This comes one week after the announcement that the Advanced Installer unit was released for booking. The FIA provides nationally recognised qualifications for fire detection and alarm.  Those studying the Maintainer unit as part of the qualification pathway will be awarded the FIA AO Level 3 in Fire Detection and Alarm Maintenance, Theory, and Regulatory Requirements. In order to gain the full qualification, learners must take and pass four units: Foundation course Health and Safety Environmental Advanced Maintainer Before taking the Advanced Maintainer unit, learners need to have taken and passed the Foundation course first so that they can build on their knowledge and go on to specialise in maintenance.  The Foundation course is the entry point for the qualification, and the other units can be studied in any order. “As a not for profit organisation, our main aim for these new qualifications was to provide a high level of education for those in the industry, and to raise the bar and the standard of professionalism.  Overall, by giving our technicians and engineers the opportunity to study and walk away with a qualification, we are giving employers more knowledgeable staff, and end users more confidence in the skills they are purchasing,” commented Ian Moore, CEO of the FIA. “We’ve invested heavily into these courses with a range of new technology for the assessment and booking processes, and into the development of the courses themselves to suit the needs of learners and employers, and we are constantly reinvesting so that we stay at the forefront of development.” Those studying the Advanced Maintainer unit as part of the qualification will learn about legislative requirements, codes of practice such as BS 5839, necessary documentation, maintenance methods, false alarm management, and waste management. “By studying with us, learners will gain an extensive knowledge and understanding of what they need to know as a fire detection and alarm systems maintainer.  This unit builds on what learners will have been introduced to in the first unit of the qualification pathway, the Foundation unit.  The Advanced Maintenance unit develops that knowledge and takes it further and deeper into the subject of maintaining a fire alarm system – discussing things like what you do to fix specific problems, how to test, and to understand a variety of common problems that may occur,” said Ian Moore. The Advanced Maintenance unit is available to book now to those that have already taken and passed the Foundation unit of the qualification pathway. Chubb wins Fire Safety and Security Award

Chubb wins Fire Safety and Security Award Chubb Fire & Security Limited has won the Fire Safety & Security award at the Electrical Review Excellence Awards 2018 for its design and installation of an innovative wireless fire detection system at the prestigious Queen’s Hotel in Penzance. Chubb, a leading provider of security and fire-safety solutions, is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX). The Awards recognise projects that embrace the latest in electrical engineering, display forward-thinking design and implementation, and champion the highest environmental, safety and energy efficiency standards. The judges were looking for evidence of how the key objectives were fulfilled, as well as examples of innovation, smart thinking, clever design, effective technical solutions and collaborative problem solving. The Queen’s Hotel turned to Chubb after a series of local fires led them to review their fire safety requirements across the whole estate. Chubb installed more than 400 wireless detectors all networked to the fire detection panel in the hotels’ main reception. It is a fully-zoned, addressable system that gives hotel management immediate visibility on where an alarm has been generated. A wireless system was chosen to minimise the cabling work that would have meant the temporary closure of the hotel. Installation was phased so at no stage was the hotel without fire protection. Graham Brimson, South West Regional Director for Chubb, says the award is recognition of the dedication and hard work of the Chubb team: “Our team of engineers and installers did a great job to complete the installation at the hotel within two weeks with a minimum of disruption to guests and staff. The feedback from the hotel was extremely complimentary, and we are extremely pleased to have received this additional accolade for the project.” For more information, visit www.chubb.co.uk.

Meet the level of education specified in EN 16763: Get qualified to install fire detection and alarm systems

Meet the level of education specified in EN 16763: Get qualified to install fire detection and alarm systems The Fire Industry Association (FIA) has released the Advanced Installer unit of the new qualification pathway.  The unit forms one of the four units of the qualification that must be undertaken in order to become fully qualified in installing fire detection and alarm systems, and is set to meet the level of education set out in the service standard, EN 16763. Available to book now, the Advanced Installer unit will provide a strong base of theory that will help technicians to be more knowledgeable and have a greater comprehension of all aspects of installing fire all systems, covering BS 5839/IS 3218, the Construction Design Management Regulations (CDM) 2015, building regulations, documentation such as the log book, and installation methodology. This unit will further develop the knowledge and understanding gained in the Foundation course, the first unit of the qualification pathway.  It will focus on how to apply fire safety law, codes of practice, and guidance for those working as a systems installer. You will then develop your comprehension of systems installation, systems testing, and fault finding. The course also covers the documentation necessary for installation and handover to other key stakeholders, including commissioning technicians, and the end user. Successful completion of this unit along with the following units: Foundation Course in Fire Detection and Alarms https://www.fia.uk.com/course/foundation-course.html Environmental Course for Field Service Technicians https://www.fia.uk.com/course/envirionmental-course.html Health and Safety Course https://www.fia.uk.com/course/health—safety-course.html will award the learner the FIA AO Level 3 in Fire Detection and Alarm Installation, Theory, and Regulatory Requirements. The course is designed to teach learners not just regulations and legislation, but how this applies to their job roles in a practical sense so that they can apply what they have learnt. The FIA’s qualification pathway is currently the only pathway of courses that will lead to a nationally recognised qualification set at Level 3 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).  This translates as a Level 4 on the European Qualifications Framework, meaning those undertaking the qualification will meet the level specified in the service standard EN 16763. EN 16763, ‘Services for Fire Safety and Security Systems’ lays out the minimum levels of education that technicians should have.  Although not mandatory by law, the standard specifies that those working on a system should be qualified to at least a Level 3 on the European Qualifications Framework. Those taking the Installation qualification can rest assured in the fact that they will be able to both meet and exceed the Standard, providing employers with quality technicians, and customers of installation companies with greater confidence in the level of skills that they are purchasing. All units listed are available to book now on the FIA website. Book now>> https://www.fia.uk.com/training/training-course-browser.html

Veteran firefighters join forces to provide new products for emergency services departments

Veteran firefighters join forces to provide new products for emergency services departments Firefighting and emergency services suppliers Fire Cam (firecam.com) announced the acquisition of Blackjack Global, producers of light and camera mounts for fire helmets. Both companies were founded by veteran firefighters, providing innovative solutions for emergency services professionals. The acquisition will allow Fire Cam to provide customers with the best mounts available for Fire Cam’s high quality and heat-resistant helmet cameras. Blackjack mounts are the global industry standard for attaching lights and cameras to fire helmets. The Blackjack was designed by Chris McCorkle when he was working as a fire fighter for the Phoenix Fire Department. McCorkle’s simple and almost indestructible design placed the light under the brim of the helmet – a design innovation that removed the possibility of the light snagging on anything, and placed the light in a functional, line of sight position. Blackjack now produces several patented mounts addressing different helmet mounting needs for firefighters. 3 out of 4 of the most popular helmet mounts used in firefighting today are Blackjack models. Helmet mounted cameras are standard equipment for emergency operations, providing critical footage and data for training and investigations. The Fire Cam 1080 and 1080 Mini capture high definition photos and videos, yet weigh just a few ounces and can be mounted to any fire helmet. These fire helmet cams perform in low light and can withstand temperatures up to 900 degrees Fahrenheit for short periods while also performing underwater. “When the idea of Fire Cam acquiring the company was first introduced, we knew it was the perfect fit,” says Chris McCorkle of Blackjack. “We have known Rob and Jami Schield for over a decade, and we have worked together to build our products and our brands in the fire market. We share the same passion for quality products and helping firefighters.” “Blackjack reinvented how flashlights are attached to fire helmets,” says Rob Schield, Fire Cam’s owner. “This technology allowed us to attach our heat resistant helmet cameras, using their patented mounts.” “We look at this as an excellent opportunity to add more value for our customers and to grow our company.”

Johnson Controls launches new SAPPHIRE PLUS 70 bar system for improved fire safety

Johnson Controls launches new SAPPHIRE PLUS 70 bar system for improved fire safety Johnson Controls introduced an innovative 70 bar gaseous fire suppression system, enabling higher fill densities at an increased pressure – reducing footprint, installation costs and service time. Part of the proven HYGOOD SAPPHIRE® range, SAPPHIRE PLUS is designed to optimise fire safety performance in high value areas, such as power plants, telecommunications, aviation, transport, IT, medical facilities and museums. In addition, SAPPHIRE PLUS is UL Listed, FM approved and EN compliant, allowing complete confidence in its fire suppression capability. Leading the market, the SAPPHIRE PLUS system will deliver an increased container pressure rating of 70 bar – a substantial increase from traditional SAPPHIRE 25 and 42 bar pressures. The greater pressure allows fill densities of up to 1.4kg/L, reducing the number of containers required. It also enables extended pipe runs — above 100 metres — meaning the containers can be stored further away from the protected space. As a result of the increased pressure capability, multiple hazards can be protected from a single container bank, through the use of selector valves – helping plant and facility managers save valuable costs and reduce installation time. The new system has also been developed to include all approvals and listings in one single global platform, without the need to switch to a different equipment range to suit regional variations in the accepted approvals and listings. Benefits therefore include compliance with all national and international standards such as EN 15004, ISO 14520 and NFPA 2001. The new SAPPHIRE PLUS gaseous fire suppression system has been specifically developed to help suppress fires quickly and easily in areas with valuable equipment, where other technologies could be less effective. SAPPHIRE PLUS provides protection to high value assets, resulting in less damage, reduced downtime and lower installation costs. With zero ozone depletion potential, a global warming potential of just 1 and a high margin of safety, it is also a safe choice for both people and the environment. SAPPHIRE PLUS delivers 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid, a clear, colorless agent that vaporises on discharge, absorbing heat and providing total flooding to suppress fire. With automatic detection and an extended temperature range, from –18°C to 65°C, the new system is ideal for use in the protection of high value assets, such as in power generation plant control rooms across the world, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The SAPPHIRE PLUS system offers a greater degree of flexibility than with lower pressure systems, helping with the design of selector valves systems and offering opportunities for the containers to be stored remote from the protected hazards. The high safety margin of Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid would be particularly useful if standardised container fills are used in a selector valve system designs, resulting in more agent being deployed in some of the protected hazards. Miguel Coll, Product Director for Engineered Systems, Johnson Controls, comments, “With the launch of SAPPHIRE PLUS, we aim to set new standards in fire protection. An extension of our reliable SAPPHIRE range, the new system will allow greater design flexibility in high value assets – while offering the same proven fast acting fire suppression.” To coincide with the launch of the new system, Johnson Controls is also introducing an interactive tool, to demonstrate how SAPPHIRE PLUS can bring benefits to both large and small high value areas. Users can apply the tool to help plan the best fire suppression solution for the environment. To learn more about the SAPPHIRE PLUS system protection, visit http://www.sapphireplus.com  For questions or support, contact Tim Nichols, Associate Director, Sales, Fire Suppression Products [timothy.nichols@jci.com].

The FIA responds to the Hackitt review

The FIA responds to the Hackitt review The Fire Industry Association (FIA) welcomes Dame Judith Hackitt’s Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety. We, amongst others, have been pushing for years for changes in the regulatory environment and competency levels in the fire safety industry.    The Hackitt Report is a very wide ranging review of the processes used to ensure high standards of fire safety within the design, construction and end use of buildings. It includes recommendations of major changes of those processes when used on High Risk Residential Buildings (HRRBs) and also recommends that the government consider implementing those changes to other high risk buildings, such as hospitals and care homes.   The FIA would agree with this and would encourage the government to implement improvements to fire safety standards more widely, rather than just for HRRBs.   Areas such as competency checks of people and companies operating in key fire safety areas, and the quality control of fire safety installations need to be improved throughout the industry.   The Hackitt Report includes a variety of other recommendations, such as the introduction of the new Joint Competent Authority for HRRBs. That would be a very major change to the approval procedure and the staged process could potentially cause delays to the construction programme. The FIA would question whether the process would result in the envisaged improvement to standards of fire safety although we would welcome more engagement on this issue.    The FIA will be responding to the call for the various organisations within the fire safety industry to take a lead in resolving the problems that clearly exist within fire safety professionals and the construction industry in order to ensure that tragedies such as the Grenfell Tower fire never happen again.
