Faulty fire hydrants restored through District Walks program Nearly 1,000 fire hydrants across Staten Island have been repainted and repaired as part of a community effort implemented by Councilman Steven Matteo’s office. “Fire hydrants are such a ubiquitous and common presence in our neighbourhoods, we almost don’t notice they are there,” said Matteo. “But a hydrant that is not working properly, not easily visible or blocked by weeds or debris can cause a fatal delay for firefighters rushing to a fire.” A total of 984 fire hydrants were repainted across the borough as part of the councilman’s District Walks program, in which Matteo and his staff walked around the area they serve, checking the conditions of the streets after residents call his office.

Launch of overseas research grants for new ideas for handling public emergencies

Launch of overseas research grants for new ideas for handling public emergencies From May 16, new ideas for improving the prevention, handling and recovery from public emergencies will be supported with overseas research grants. These are available to anyone involved in emergency and crisis management, and others, for non-academic studies of the best ideas and practice to be found anywhere in the world. The Churchill Fellowships in Emergency Response will fund Fellows to explore innovation in the management of public emergencies of all kinds, from prevention to response to post-crisis recovery. Projects may relate to frontline and rescue services or to the agencies and charities that work on crisis management in the widest sense, including infrastructure, early warning, survivor support, rehabilitation, reconstruction and policy. Proposals may be intended for operational, tactical or strategic implementation, and applicants are welcomed from all levels of seniority. Churchill Fellowships are travel grants that fund dedicated and dynamic individuals to research innovative ideas and best practice overseas, then bring their global insights back to the UK and make change happen in their professions and communities. Fellowships are available in 12 fields of interest, including the Emergency response category. Julia Weston, Chief Executive of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, said: “Our emergency services face enormous challenges, from terrorist incidents to knife-based crime and natural and man-made disasters. Just as significant is the challenge of looking after their own mental and physical wellbeing. We are funding Churchill Fellowships to find inspiration from the world’s best projects and practice for this important area.”

NSW buys Boeing 737 large air tanker for firefighting

NSW buys Boeing 737 large air tanker for firefighting New South Wales has signed a contract with United States-based Coulson Aviation to purchase three aircraft for firebombing duties, including a modified Boeing 737 large air tanker. In addition to the modified 737, the contract announced by NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott on May 15 also included two Citation V lead/intelligence aircraft. The Minister’s statement noted the modified 737 would give the state year-round access to a large air tanker, given an increasing number of winter bushfires in recent times. “Last fire season there were more fires during winter than across the summer months,” Elliott said. “The NSW Government is committed to ensuring our firefighters have the tools they need year-round to help protect lives and property.” Coulson Aviation said in a statement the 737 Fireliner, which was certified by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in as an air tanker and passenger transport in 2018, was the largest ever air tanker ever purchased by a country. “When we started the B737 Fireliner program we set out to create a new generation of air tanker,” Coulson Vice President of aviation Britton Coulson said in a statement. “The goal was to utilize the latest SMART technology in our tanking system and create a multi-use firefighting aircraft that would create the best value for our customers.” Coulson Aviation said it would provide all flight and maintenance personnel for the three aircraft under a 10-year operational contract. “With this contract now in place, Coulson Aviation PTY will establish a year-round operation in NSW to support its contracts at the RAAF base in Richmond where the B737 Fireliner will be pre-positioned to support the RFS this coming July.” The company supported the NSW Rural Fire Service with its 737 Fireliner during the 2018/19 summer fire season and has operated a C-130 Hercules for firefighting duties in Australia in previous years.

Infinity CCS helps the FDNY win Community Mayors Nicholas DeGaeta Award Infinity CCS, UK-based technology provider, congratulates its client, the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) project team, on winning the Department’s Community Mayors Nicholas DeGaeta Award for the implementation of its 9-1-1 Computerized Triage System. FDNY has worked with Infinity CCS since 2016 to deploy the new system, FIT (Flexible Intelligent Triage) Platform, which is based on Infinity CCS’ call scripting and workflow solutions for call centres. The FIT Platform was successfully deployed in 2016 and has now been in continuous use for nearly three years, supporting the FDNY’s ability to rapidly and accurately process the 1.5 million 9-1-1 calls for medical emergency assistance that it receives annually. “We were the first and, to my knowledge, the only EMS system in the country that successfully bought a computerized triage software application from a company that doesn’t build their application just for 9-1-1 use,” said Edward Dolan, Deputy Commissioner. “For all our calls, processing time went down by 6.7 seconds, and we also found that processing times for our high priority calls – those that are potentially life-threatening – went down by 3.6 seconds. Most importantly, we have seen a dramatic improvement in quality of the call triage assignment.” Numerous members from multiple FDNY bureaux collaborated to successfully design, implement and train EMTs as well as identify the questions and call type assignments that the new triage system would use. Completing this monumental task and meeting one of the Department’s main mission objectives of allowing 1.5 million EMS calls to be processed faster and more accurately, saw all members of the project team were presented with the FDNY’s Community Mayors Nicholas DeGaeta Award. In the nearly three years since it has been rolled out, the new computerized triage system has improved response times, data tracking and dispatch training, as well as accuracy of dispatching the correct resources for each call type. “We’ve implemented a whole new system without a hitch” concluded David Prezant MD, Chief Medical Officer of FDNY. “I think it’s a huge accomplishment.”

Patol selected as detection supplier for prestigious laboratory project A line-type detector supplied by Patol has been selected as the heat detection method in a new fire protection installation in a laboratory working in a Hazardous environment operating within a Ministry Of Defence site. The fire safety at the laboratory is provided through a Fire Detection system installed by Honeywell featuring a SecuriSens ADW 535-2 line-type heat detector connecting to an extinguishant Fire Control Panel. The detector from Securiton, for whom Patol is the distributor in the UK, is a two-pipe, two-zone system. The sensing tubes filled with normal air have been installed in the areas within the laboratory being monitored, with a fully electronic sensor permanently recording the pressure within the tubes. As a double-knock system, the alarm criteria for both zones must be met before the CO2 extinguish-ant is released, thereby significantly reducing the potential for false alarms. The SecuriSens detector can operate in harsh environments subject to corrosive gases, extreme humidity and high temperatures. A significant benefit of the detector is its low maintenance requirements, with an extremely tough sensing tube (available in stainless steel, copper or Teflon), making it particularly suitable for applications in which functional and maintenance checks are not possible or difficult to undertake. In addition to laboratory environments, it is widely employed in diverse applications, from tunnels, parking areas and loading ramps to vehicle paint spray booths, distilleries and waste treatment facilities. The detector meets the requirements of EN 54-22 and offers sufficient internal memory to store up to 1,000 events, with a read-out function offering a timestamp and detailed description of each event. www.patol.co.uk

The NEXUS Wireless Alert System with input / output for access control Luminite Electronics, manufacturer of wireless and hard wired PIR detectors, has been enjoying success with the launch of their Nexus wireless ciritical alerts at the end of last year. Initially aimed at schools for lockdown and construction sites for fire, Nexus has evolved into an alert system for a host of applications including office spaces, care homes, hospitals and places of worship. The Nexus units are battery powered and have a long and robust transmission range of 1km between units. The systems are portable and quick and easy to install with no civil works or cabling required. Nexus units are designed with an input and an output so they can seamlessly integrate with existing alarm and access control systems.  For example, a Nexus point can be connected to a fire door to activate a sounder / strobe when the fire door is breached or propped open.  This can be an independent alert within the building or can communicate through other Nexus points in range back to a control room. By using the PC app, one central location can monitor and control the alerts and re-set the system after activation.  The email function of the Nexus PC app allows for a notification to be sent to up to three email addresses or groups to further clarify the access breach. The input / output can be connected to a variety of access control points including turnstiles, areas with restricted access, as well as fire doors.  In a lockdown situation all access points can be triggered to restrict access and egress whilst in the event of fire these points can be opened to allow rapid evacuation. Kentec protects International Cricket Stadium from risk of fire Spectators, players, and property at India’s Mohali International Cricket Stadium are being protected by a highly-sophisticated Taktis panel from Kentec. The Taktis 8 loop addressable fire panel, installed by Firehut Commercial Equipment Pvt Ltd, was chosen by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to replace a faulty system, and to provide a reliable and user-friendly control panel. The Mohali International Cricket Stadium has a capacity of 26,000 and the pavilions, public areas, club house, player changing rooms and conference halls are protected by a fire system comprising approximately 700 detectors and devices, all controlled via the Taktis panel.
