Johnson Controls launches new UL standard smoke detection technology

Johnson Controls has introduced advanced smoke sensors built upon the established performance of its flagship TrueAlarm technology. The latest updates to UL 268, Standard for Safety of Smoke Detectors for Fire Alarm Systems, call for significant improvements to smoke detection technology. Set to take effect in June 2021, the new UL 268 7th edition standard requires smoke sensors, detectors and smoke alarms to pass more than 215 new or revised performance tests, including three new challenging tests: a cooking nuisance alarm test, a flaming polyurethane foam test and a smouldering polyurethane test. The UL 7th edition polyurethane tests better represent the type of smoke and flames produced in modern building fires due to the increased use of synthetic furnishing materials that can ignite and burn faster than other materials. The cooking test was added after research showed people frequently disable smoke alarms due to nuisance alarms caused by cooking and shower steam. The new TrueAlarm sensors provide earlier detection, better fire type recognition and fewer nuisance alarms. They use sophisticated algorithms to analyse particles and determine whether they are generated by an actual fire rather than smoke or steam from cooking. Sensor alarm points can be programmed for timed, multi-stage operation per sensor. A lower percentage alert can cause a warning prompt to investigate the issue while a higher programmed percentage will initiate an alarm. “The design of our new sensors is based on decades of fire detection experience and demonstrates our commitment to creating the most innovative and reliable products in the industry,” said Peter Ryan, senior commercialisation manager, Global Fire Detection Products, Johnson Controls. “These re-designed smoke sensors reduce the number of nuisance alarms while providing early notification, when needed, to help building occupants evacuate quickly and safely during a fire event.”

Link launches Redline Performance series suspensions for fire apparatus

Link Mfg., Ltd. have announced the introduction of its new Redline Performance Series Suspensions that include a broader selection of weight capacities for its acclaimed Air Link tandem drive axle suspension and Atlas single drive axle suspension. Bristol Uniforms react to European firefighter PPE standard update

Bristol Uniforms is putting together a handy guide for its distributors and customers, summarising the changes that have been made, including minor changes to performance requirements. The European standard EN 469, which ensures protective clothing worn by firefighters is of good quality, fit for purpose and adequately protective, has been revised and published . The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) published EN469: 2020 Protective clothing for firefighters – Performance requirements for protective clothing for firefighting in mid-August.  EN 469 covers general clothing design, labelling, minimum performance requirements, and the tests that should be carried out to determine these performance levels. As such, Bristol have got to work and other tests have also been added, for example to check that sewing thread can withstand heats of 260oC without melting, and to ensure that when clothing comes into contact with a surface of 250oC that it takes longer than 10 seconds for the temperature inside to rise by 10oC. In addition, some testing processes, such as the resistance to liquid chemical penetration test, have been simplified and some more subjective tests for things like surface wetting have been removed. The new standard also specifies extra design features, for example lockable zips to prevent accidental opening and exposure to contaminants, and wider pocket flaps to keep contaminants and burning debris out. It also now puts a limit on the depth of anti-wicking material added to the sleeves and hems of garments. BSI/CEN standards expert Dave Matthews has been involved in the development of this standard. He said: “EN 469 has been updated to reflect the changing role of firefighters, and to improve the accuracy and consistency of testing. The revision has taken a lengthy period, due to the interest in this standard. It will continue to ensure that all conforming PPE is fit for purpose and protects firefighters from the hazards of the job.” Richard Ballheimer, Compliance Manager at Bristol Uniforms, is Secretary to the standards committee that updated EN 469, and provides specialist advice and guidance on firefighter PPE. He said: “EN 469: 2020 replaces EN 469: 2005 and like all manufacturers, Bristol Uniforms will now start the process of certifying its structural firefighter clothing to this new standard. Customers can rest assured that when they buy PPE certified to this new standard, it’s been thoroughly tested and is fit for purpose.”

Active Fire Protection Market set for growth post Covid-19

The active fire protection market is comprised of detection/alarms and suppression systems. Alarms and detection systems account for 63% of the overall active fire protection market, having gained slight share over the last two years, with the majority of installations of products and systems going into the non-domestic sectors. Domestic smoke alarms only account for a small portion of total market value. Over the last decade or so, innovations in detection technology have significantly reduced the likelihood and number of false alarms, through such developments as improved capability of sensor technology in smoke detectors. However, the number of false alarms due to apparatus faults has stabilised in the last three years, suggesting that more recent product improvements are no longer having an impact on the number of false alarms. AMA Research’s current forecast indicates a decline in 2020 due to the impact of Covid-19, this is down to the closing building sites, the furloughing of employees as well as restrictions on the supply of building materials throughout the world. The active fire protection market is expected to grow by 14% between 2020 and 2024. Fire detectors, which serve to identify where a fire is occurring by locating heat, smoke or flames, before providing a warning of the blaze through an audible alarm and often through the alerting the fire service will outperform the market, increasing 17% between 2020 and 2024. Higher levels of publicity and the greater awareness of fire safety measures, particularly within high rise buildings, should stimulate demand for active fire protection products. This should be seen in both new installations and particularly in the replacement sector. Increasingly, businesses are adopting integrated fire and security systems, which is likely to remain a key feature of the industry. IT-based security systems, often including fire protection systems in combination with other security measures on a single network, such as video surveillance, access control and intruder alarms. Bureau Veritas listed on procure partnerships framework

Bureau Veritas has secured a place for Fire Engineering services on the Procure Partnerships Framework, designed to simplify procurement for the public sector. Structured around 11 regional framework lots, the Procure Partnerships Framework provides local delivery with national governance to support public sector bodies with their construction projects. Bureau Veritas has been appointed to the Procure Partnerships Framework Professional Services Agreement in all regions. The four-year framework starts on 1st September 2020 and covers 11 disciplines including project management, structural and civil engineering, quality surveying, MEP design and fire engineering. It follows the recent announcement of a similar contractor framework from Procure Partnerships. It is estimated that this new professional services framework could account for a total spend of up to £500m over the four year period. To hinder or not to hinder – that is the CPR question

Standards for products and services are at the heart of success of the fire safety industry. Euralarm’ members need a fast and flexible standards-setting system because it is not only the best way to serve the interests of customers, the industry and society but also is a basic requirement for a safe and secure society. Our standardisation system helps us to continue to deliver the highest levels of safety and security to citizens. However, for the competitiveness of the electronic fire safety industry, the impact of the CPR on standardisation has according to our members unfortunately not met our expectations. This industry as well as many others depend on standardised product performance requirements and standardised behaviour, which is at odds with the interpretation of the CPR following the European Court of Justice judgement on the James Elliot case. For example, alarm buttons to activate a fire alarm system are across Europe – and the world – always red. Under the CPR, this is not seen as essential criteria and could change now with national solutions, which would lead to building occupants being confused. In one country the button is red and in another could be any other colour. Our expectation in the CPR is to ensure the European wide acceptance of test laboratory results, which in turn supports the movement of construction products across Europe. But now it has taken a different turn since the CJEU judgement. Further, trying to cover a very wide assortment of products from aggregate to electronic systems is proving to have a negative effect on the standardisation of fire detection and alarm products. Background The free movement of goods is one of the success stories of the European project. It has helped to build the internal market from which European citizens and businesses are benefiting and which is at the heart of EU policies. It was that same free movement of goods that was behind the introduction of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) in 2011. With this regulation the EU wanted to establish a common “playing field” for products for the construction industry. To assess or declare the conformity of the products use is made of the so-called harmonised standards. Harmonised standards Harmonised standards are European standards that are developed by a recognised European Standards Organisation, such as CEN CENELEC or ETSI. These standards define the common technical language to be used by manufacturers to express the technical performance of their products, by regulators to express their requirements and by designers, contractors, and other construction stakeholders to efficiently exchange information. The standards provide a solid technical basis for testing the performance of products, allowing manufacturers to prepare a declaration of performance (DoP) for their products as defined in the CPR and to affix the CE mark. The CE marking signifies that a product complies with relevant safety, health, or environmental regulations across the European Economic Area (EEA). Working with European harmonised standards offers many benefits. First, the technical relevance is guaranteed since the standards are the result of open and transparent discussions by interested stakeholders in the European Standardisation Organisations (ESO). Following these discussions, the standard is adopted by one of the ESOs (CEN, CENELEC, ETSI) which makes the European standard relevant to the market as well. And since the European standard is requested by the EU and cited in the Official Journal of the EU (OJEU) the harmonised standards are also relevant for the EU politics. When using a harmonised standard, it is assumed that the product complies with the basic requirements of the directive. This ‘presumption of conformity’ fulfils the circle that is needed for the free circulation of a product on the EU Single Market. One size fits all? Overlooking the construction industry, there is a very wide range of building products that fall under the scope of the CPR, ranging from low tech products like asphalt for road construction to high tech products like fire detection devices for buildings. Most of these products fall into categories that allow manufacturers to self-declare compliance with standards. In case they cannot declare it themselves, there are several third-party testing institutes that can help them. However, fire protection systems and equipment (and to an extent also security products) must be third party assessed and certificated before being “placed on the market”. So far, it looks as if working with harmonised standards for assessing or declaring product conformity worked well. That changed with the so-called James Elliot case. James Elliot Constructions started a case at the European Court of Justice against Irish Asphalt. The building company claimed that the aggregate that was provided by the asphalt manufacturer was not compliant with the specifications of the relevant harmonised standard for aggregates. The European Court of Justice regarded privately produced technical harmonised standards, as a provision of EU law. In its ruling the Court not only addressed this specific context, but also raised the need to address some specific aspects of the functioning of the European standardisation system. Aligning the pace of market and standardisation The James Elliot case triggered the European Commission to set up additional assessment processes by which harmonised standards, once elaborated, can be reviewed in retrospect. This development has brought the review and publication of standards in the Official Journal of the EU (OJEU) to a stillstand. In 2019, not one single standard was cited in the OJEU and there is no hope of a change. The additional assessment processes for harmonised standards may not be of great importance for low tech products that remain the same for decades, but it is for high tech products, such as fire safety equipment. The rapid technological developments of these, and other high-tech products require up-to-date versions of harmonised standards. What is more, product innovation utilising new technology is an important capability for the fire safety and security industry to improve performance and usability. Most of the fire protection systems and equipment also employ electronics and software that needs to be updated on a regular basis.

Nozzle innovation with Rosenbauer

The new Rosenbauer RTE FX nozzle combines uncompromising technology, state of the art material and manufacturing quality, and a brand new, innovative operating concept. Its cubic design is unique on the market and allows even inexperienced emergency personnel to immediately and intuitively understand all of its functionalities. Thanks to the interference-free design, all surfaces are aligned parallel in the fast attack position, and the nozzle is automatically pre-set for indoor fire attacks: 235 l/min with a medium spray jet and a spray angle of approx. 40 degrees. This means that nozzle operators are optimally prepared for firefighting from the first moment. Even in completely smoke-filled rooms, in the dark, and even with absolute zero visibility, this basic setting guarantees safe operation of the nozzle. The intuitive handling makes operating errors extremely unlikely and thus reduces the training effort required, which is particularly advantageous for volunteer fire brigades. Stepless Fine-tuning With the RTE FX nozzle, the amount of water discharged can be finely adjusted by means of a slide valve. As a result, a clean stream pattern and high extinguishing flexibility is achieved through quick opening and closing. The valve is operated via a clip that has been optimized in terms of length and shape for a comfortable grip. When the valve is closed, this clip points to the front and can be steplessly moved to the rear until the full flow rate is achieved. Three maximum flow rates can be pre-set: 40, 130, and 235 l/min for the RTE FX 235 EN nozzle and 130, 235, and 400 l/min for the RTE FX 400 EN (measured at 6 bar on the nozzle tip). The stream pattern is altered at the top of the spray head. The interference-free RTE FX comes with the medium spray angle preset, which has an ideal ratio of throw range and jet width for indoor fire attacks. If you turn the adjusting ring to the left, the stream jet pattern becomes increasingly solid, which enables safe firefighting over greater distances as a result of the correspondingly higher throw ranges (up to 35 m for the RTE FX 235 EN or 41 m for the RTE FX 400 EN). When turned to the right, it becomes an increasingly wider spray jet, which can be used as a shield of water to protect emergency crews in a so-called ‘water curtain’. The rotating parts are designed in such a way that a fine transition is possible across the entire jet range, from solid jet to protective agent envelope. Not only this, but it can be done without having to adjust your grip. Robust Design, Perfect Handling High-quality materials (anodized aluminum, stainless steel, glass-fibre-reinforced plastic), and innovative design elements make the RTE FX a highly robust and maintenance-free piece of equipment. The spray head has a fixed aluminum toothed ring and an FX absorber with built-in suspension in the front, which absorbs the energy that impacts the nozzle, for example when a window is smashed. The FX ERGO handle features knobs for optimal gripping when wearing fire fighting gloves, and it has finger recesses for intuitive hand positioning. In addition, the handle design – tapering to the front, widening towards the rear – ensures safe and fatigue-free working as the pressure is evenly distributed across the hand, preventing the grip from twisting. A practical transport lug is located on the rear, which allows the nozzle to be hooked, e.g., so that it can be dragged upstairs more easily for faster advancement. Rounding off the Range The new RTE FX nozzle will be launched on the market at the beginning of September and is intended to round off the top-end of the Rosenbauer nozzle range. This range includes products with outputs between 17 and 700 l/min, for normal pressure (SELECT FLOW) and high pressure (NEPIRO), as well as the PRO JET special nozzle. With this range of products, Rosenbauer is able to offer fire services around the world the perfect nozzle for every scenario.  The new RTE FX is also designed in such a way that it can be correctly operated both immediately and intuitively.
