Behind the scenes at the British Firefighter Challenge

The British Firefighter Challenge is an annual sporting event involving a series of gruelling strength and endurance challenges. Designed to encourage health and fitness, advance equality and diversity, and fundraise for the Firefighters Charity, the event welcomes firefighters worldwide from all backgrounds and ethnicities. This year over 100 Firefighters competed, representing Fire Services from across the UK and Europe. With over a dozen sponsors, nearly 1,000 spectators and over 5,000 viewers live streaming the event, the challenge raised £5,000 for the Firefighters Charity, helping operational and retired firefighters receive the physical, financial or mental health support they need. The challenge tests speed, strength and stamina, as participants complete eight gruelling stages one after the other, carrying over 30kg of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and breathing apparatus. From a three-story tower stair ascent and descent to a casualty rescue of a 70KG dummy, the event pushes firefighters to their limits. John Gregory, Director at the British Firefighter Challenge and Crew Manager at Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, said, “Finding the time and energy to train for the challenge can be a feat in itself. I recommend breaking each stage down. Improve your stair running and sprinting, work with resistance and weights similar to those used on the course and get familiar with dragging a 70kg dummy. The final challenge of completing the casualty rescue cannot be underestimated.” Every stage of the competition has been thought through to replicate the demands of the profession. All contestants must compete in their own, approved PPE and wear breathing apparatus, essential for protecting firefighters from the elements. “Not all PPE is created equal. Firefighters need the right equipment to ensure they benefit from comfort and agility without jeopardising on protection. HAIX, a global footwear specialist with nearly 30 years’ experience developing firefighter boots, provided members of Team GB with HAIX Fire Eagle boots for much-needed stability and mobility while remaining lightweight”, added Gregory. Why fire safety should be a primary concern for schools

To protect pupils, staff and visitors, schools must adhere to stringent fire safety regulations. And with fire safety design standards under the spotlight, Karen Trigg of Allegion UK recalls the necessity of ongoing assessments and maintenance periods within school buildings. The UK Fire Service is called out to extinguish fires in approximately 1,500 UK schools per year. Each year, these incidents – regardless of magnitude – disrupt the education of around 90,000 students, cause economic strain through physical building damage and, most significant of all, compromise safety. In line with this, the government recently opened consultation on proposed revisions to its non-statutory fire safety guidance in schools. The Building Bulletin 100 (BB100), as it’s known, was first introduced in 2007 and gives thought to school building design, crucially advising on how to minimise the spread of fire and make the structure adequately resistant to fire. Yet, the BB100 requires updating and simplifying. Many have raised concerns towards the guidance, specifically for “falling short” on active fire protection methods such as sprinklers – which in newly built school facilities have seen a reduction in installation from 70% in 2007 to around 15% today. With this renewed focus on legislation and schools back at full capacity, passive fire protection methods, such as fire doors and their hardware, must also be considered as part of a complete, fire safety package. Legislation and liability As the Department of Education seeks views on the revised BB100 reform, decision makers must be proactive in improving the fire safety standards within their own school buildings. Fires are unpredictable, beginning in and out of school hours and across various areas of the premises, too, from food tech rooms to chemistry labs where combustible materials are held. Arson is also a common offence, accounting for up to 70% of incidents in school environments for some local authority fire brigades. In the event of a fire, should a school be considered unsafe or in breach of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, it is in danger of receiving heavy penalties and fines. Not to mention the risk of a damaged reputation. To remain compliant, decision makers must approach fire safety as a continuous process, routinely managing all areas of fire safety within their facilities to be prepared for all contingencies. This is demonstrated in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, where it’s stated all workplaces must designate a Responsible Person (RP) to ensure their building is prepared in the event of a fire. Often, within education environments, this responsibility can be shared. In local authority schools for example, accountability can be shared between headteacher and the authority, and in private or independent schools, the responsibility often lies with the building owner. As part of their obligations, the RP must manage the ongoing compliance with fire safety legislation, while ensuring fire systems and procedures, including fire drills, are uncompromised. Additionally, the RP must possess a robust knowledge of fire safety to manage and perform regular fire safety risk assessments. Ongoing protection A fire safety risk assessment is designed to help identify the fire hazards within an educational premises. As part of the risk assessment, the RP must inspect everything from fire-fighting equipment and fire doors to staff training and pupil understanding towards the school’s procedures in the event of a fire. As highlighted by the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, a fire risk assessment consists of five steps: · Identify the people at risk · Identify all potential fire hazards · Evaluate the risk · Record the findings · Review and revise   Under the evaluation of risk stage, various areas of a school’s fire protection systems are assessed, including fire detection methods and emergency escape routes. Escape routes, for example, are fundamental in the event of a fire and rely upon passive fire protection methods, such as fire door sets, that will require ongoing assessment and maintenance. Under The Fire Safety Order 2005, fire door sets in the education sector are a legislative requirement and form a critical role in providing a safer educational environment. Emergency exits conclude escape routes and should be assembled with ‘fire rated’ doors, which can be rated to FD30 or FD60, and will delay the spread of smoke and fire by 30 and 60 minutes respectively. As part of the risk assessment process, the correct location of all fire doors – whether FD30 or FD60 – is determined based on the risk of the area (FD60s are more likely to be installed in kitchen areas for example). All fire doors should also be signed appropriately, with a British Standard sign attached to the face of the door on both sides for FDKS and AFDKC (1.5m from the floor). Above all else, they must operate as intended. In the circumstance of a fire, it’s vital that fire doors close fully independently, and their hardware – including hinges, handles, door closers, locks and signage – is correctly installed and maintained. Upon inspection of a fire door, the RP must review the certification, gaps, seals, hinges and the closing elements to ensure all is functioning appropriately. Passive fire protection is described as the backbone of fire safety, and so, in the event a fire door is identified as defective, it’s imperative that maintenance is carried out swiftly and professionally to retain the integrity of the escape route and compartmentation. Fire doors and their hardware are just one element of a successful fire safety strategy, and thus one stage of a fire risk assessment. Yet, these simple, routine checks can help save lives and livelihoods. This FIA Guidance Note is aimed at providing an introduction to Industrial Vehicle and Equipment Firefighting systems. It is a summary of the applicable standards, terms, available technologies, and the practical and legislative requirements surrounding the technology. This document is intended to provide a summary of terminology, applicable standards at the date of publication and key reference material pertaining to Industrial Vehicle and Equipment Firefighting Systems. This Guidance Note has been prepared to provide guidance to those charged with the purchasing, designing, installing, testing, inspecting, approving, operating, or maintaining approved Industrial Vehicle and Equipment Firefighting Systems. Industrial Vehicle and Equipment is a term used to cover vehicles such as mining and quarrying, forestry, waste management, distribution, logistics, construction and agriculture that may or may not be licensed for over the road use. CertAlarm Scheme accepted by EA

The confidence this accreditation brings eliminates the need for suppliers to have their products certified in each country in which they wish to sell. Fire and rescue could be unable to face growing challenges

A lack of new funding for fire and rescue in the Budget and Spending Review could leave fire and rescue unable to deal with growing challenges including climate change, according to the Fire Brigades Union. The Budget and Spending Review contained no significant new central government funding commitments for fire and rescue services. This is despite concerns over lack of resource with regards to existing challenges alone, with response times increasing for every type of fire in England since 2010. Services have seen unprecedented funding cuts; central funding in England has been slashed by £400m since 2013-14, and UK firefighter numbers having fallen by a fifth since 2010. Fire Brigades Union General Secretary Matt Wrack said, “Austerity has cut fire and rescue to the bone and this Budget and the Spending Review does nothing to fix this situation. A threadbare fire and rescue service is not able to deal with the challenges it currently faces today, let alone taking into account the bigger challenges that concerns like climate change will pose in the future. The government has utterly failed to look ahead and ensure that it is providing enough funding for a professional, effective fire and rescue service as we go forward. “The fire and rescue service must be able to provide for every member of the community – but the government is failing to fund it to do that.” Climate change is set to bring about a rising challenge to firefighters because they are on the frontline against floods and wildfires, both of which climate change will increase the risk of. In 2014, the UN’s IPCC said that climate change could increase the annual cost of flooding in the UK 15-fold by the 2080s. Furthermore, researchers have found that “once-in-a-century” UK wildfire threats could happen most years by 2100. Firefighters are bitterly disappointed to have seen no concrete investment commitments on funding pay in the Budget and Spending Review, despite high levels of inflation. Firefighters have already lost around 12% of their pay in real terms over the last decade. Commenting on this Matt Wrack said, “Firefighters carry out lifesaving work and have taken on extra work to help combat the pandemic. The least the government could do is reward them properly. Staffordshire Fire and Rescue go live with FireWatch Cloud

Infographics announced that Staffordshire Fire and Rescue is the latest FRS to go live with the FireWatch Cloud – a fully-managed service based on the Microsoft Azure platform. The migration to the FireWatch Cloud solution provides a resilient architecture, flexible access to the FireWatch integrated fire service management platform from remote locations, and includes software upgrade services and other benefits. New fire safety system from Hochiki installed at the Corte Regia Relais and Spa

Located in the picturesque village of Borghetto di Valeggio sul Mincio, Italy, the Corte Regia Relais and Spa overlooks the river Mincio, with views across to the imposing Scaliger Castle and the Visconteo Bridge and a short journey to Lake Garda. For its guests this hotel is an escape from the outside world and is famed for providing a relaxing experience. In 2020 the hotel underwent a massive transformation with the renovation of historical barns originally built in circa 800. The aim of the renovation project was to conserve the building and to improve the functional use of the building while maintaining the original integrity and structure. As part of the renovation project a fully compliant fire detection and life safety system was to be designed and installed throughout the hotel’s luxury rooms and spa. The installer, Cressoni Impianti Tecnolgici chose Hochiki Italia as the manufacturer who designed the successful solution for the hotel. The biggest challenge with the project was the fact that the hotel was a listed historical building. The original stone walls date from the 800s and the ceilings with wooden beams had to be kept. This made the wiring for the project quite complex, hence the need for a wireless solution. To keep with the aesthetics of the building and to minimise additional building changes the Hochiki Italia team worked closely to collaborate with the installer and the architect to satisfy the client’s request to be sympathetic and respect the historical building. The ideal solution was to install both Hochiki’s ESP range and Ekho wireless systems. Products from the ESP range included multi-heat sensors, intelligent photoelectric smoke sensors with short circuit isolators and high performing chamber technology. This allowed for sensor threshold levels to be increased, thereby improving the signal to noise ratio which reduced the susceptibility to costly false alarms happening within the hotel. Hochiki’s Ekho system raises wireless fire detection and alarm system gave the hotel new levels of reliability and flexibility. The hybrid system utilises the latest MESH net technology to provide the client with absolute and an economic wireless fire system installation with the minimum of disturbance to the surroundings – particularly important in keeping to the aesthetics of the Corte Regia Relais and Spa where installation of fire cabling would have been difficult, overly expensive or even prohibited in some parts. The wireless solution installed could be easily expanded around the entire site and worked particularly well with the original solid walls of the building. Ezio Danese, Project Manager at Hochiki Italia commented: “The project had to comply with both architectural and standards requirements. The standards state that inside each room, in addition to a smoke detector, an alarm must be installed with a sound level of 75dB (A) in addition to an optical system capable of reaching even hearing-impaired people. For this reason, the EKWL8-OV detectors were chosen as they are equipped with an EN54-23 certified VAD and an EN54-3 certified voice sounder. The translators, connected to Hochiki’s ESP loop, were installed in the false ceilings in the corridors; their considerable range (1,200m in free area) made it possible to reach all the different wireless devices installed in the rooms. Marion Body Works makes HAAS Alert Safety Cloud Standard

Emergency vehicle manufacturer Marion Body Works is making HAAS Alert’s Safety Cloud a standard safety solution on new apparatus. The collaboration will equip newly manufactured Marion Body Works apparatus with the Safety Cloud Responder-to-Vehicle (R2V) service, enabling fire crews to automatically deliver digital alerts to nearby drivers up to 30 seconds in advance and reduce the risk of collision by up to 90%. Safety Cloud is the industry standard in digital alerting, with more than 800 public safety agencies and fleets nationwide actively using the service daily for added protection on the road. The service works by delivering real-time notifications to approaching drivers when equipped emergency vehicles are responding and on-scene, improving motorist awareness and allowing more time for drivers to make safe maneuvers and comply with Move Over laws. Safety Cloud alerts are received by drivers through navigation platforms such as Waze and through the vehicle infotainment screens of connected vehicle services. Bosch Building Technologies plans to acquire Protec Fire and Security Group

Bosch Building Technologies plans to acquire Protec Fire and Security Group, headquartered in Nelson, UK. Corresponding agreements were signed by Bosch and Protec on October 22, 2021. Protec employs around 1,100 employees at its nine European locations in the UK and the Netherlands and generated sales of GBP 125 million (around 142 million Euro) in the fiscal year 2021 according to preliminary figures. “With the acquisition of Protec, Bosch Building Technologies aims to expand its business and grow further in the European market,” said Thomas Quante, President of Bosch Building Technologies. It has been agreed that the purchase price will not be disclosed. The acquisition is subject to approval by the relevant antitrust authorities. Bosch Building Technologies currently has the focus of its European system integrator business in Germany and the Netherlands. In addition, the Bosch division is also active as a system integrator in the USA and Asia. “With its market presence in the UK, Protec is an ideal complement for Bosch Building Technologies. Together, we want to continue to expand the business, building on Protec’s strong brand with an innovative product and service offering, the highly experienced management that is committed to the company, and the employees who have in-depth industry knowledge and a high level of customer service”, explained Quante.
