Evolution specifies fire systems solution

A bespoke fire and security solution specified and installed by Evolution, an integrated fire and security systems business, is helping to protect visitors and staff at Johnnie Walker Princes Street (JWPS) in the heart of Edinburgh. Situated on Princes Street, JWPS takes visitors on an immersive journey through the 200-year history behind the world’s best-selling whisky, as well as food and drink experiences, hosted across eight floors of the transformed landmark building in the Scottish capital. It features the 1820 rooftop bar, with stunning views across the city and The Label Studio, which hosts a number of live events and performances throughout the year. JWPS, which has quickly become one of Edinburgh’s top attractions, is owned by Diageo, a global provider in beverage alcohol with an outstanding collection of over 200 brands across beer and spirits. Diageo appointed FES Group, one of the UK’s technical and building services companies, to tender for the fire and security system, and FES in turn recommended and appointed Evolution to manage the bespoke system’s design and installation. Evolution’s solution comprises a complete fire detection and alarm system, including disabled refuge systems for emergency evacuation. The security system includes access control, CCTV, intrusion detection and an intelligent International Communications (InterComms) system which enables live communications with an infinite number of doors/master stations with no distance limitations, and can be fully integrated with other IP-based systems. The fire and security systems are fully networked and integrated into an innovative front-end graphics system that enables Diageo’s on-site security staff to monitor and manage all system components in a single platform. The platform has been specifically designed to protect against cyber-threats. This resilient solution has archiving and failover technologies that provide business continuity across a variety of outages. Euralarm releases guidance document

The Extinguishing Section of Euralarm has published a guidance document on Integrated fire protection solutions for lithium-ion batteries. This new Euralarm guideline provides information on the issues related to the use of lithium-ion batteries, how fires start in batteries and on how they may be detected, controlled, suppressed and extinguished. It also provides guidance on post fire management. Excluded from the scope are explosion and ventilation issues. Lithium-Ion batteries have become the battery technology of choice in a variety of areas, including amongst others, power generation, communications, industrial, vehicles and many other applications. Active control of the energy being stored and extracted from lithium-ion batteries has been the foundation of their increasing popularity. The relatively low frequency of major incidents is testament to the effort and successful design applied to the critical aspect of using such high-density energy products. However, active control of the battery energy is not sufficient to prevent safety-critical situations and multiple levels of defence are needed to minimise the serious consequences of a failure in a lithium-ion battery. The increasing number of lithium-ion batteries and an increasing amount of stored energy in different energy storage applications present a new type of fire hazard where fire protection is challenging. Key issues in any fire protection system are the selection of the most appropriate agent for the specific hazard, system layout, the correct discharge of the extinguishing agent, as well as correct installation, the use of approved systems and constant maintenance by appropriately trained staff. The guidance document ‘Integrated fire protection solutions for lithium-ion batteries’ is intended as guidance for all professionals dealing with fire safety, fire protection, extinguishing and fire suppression in connection with the use, storage or transport of lithium-ion batteries and their fire risks. Aspects of consumers products are not covered in this guidance. The document is intended as general guidance and is not a substitute for detailed advice in specific circumstances. Tapachula International Airport – Oshkosh Striker

Oshkosh Airport Products, an Oshkosh Corporation Company, announced the Tapachula International Airport (TAP), located in Tapachula, Chiapas, in southern Mexico has taken delivery of an Oshkosh Airport Products Striker 4×4 ARFF vehicle. The new fire apparatus was purchased through dealer ATEPSA located in Guadalajara, Jalisco Mexico and delivered in February 2022. It is the newest addition to the Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) operated airport. “We have enjoyed an incredible relationship with ASUR the last 20 years, and our team is proud their fleet is made up entirely of Oshkosh Airport Products ARFF vehicles,” said Eduardo Palacio, Manager, ATEPSA. “The TAK-4 independent suspension, which is unique to the Striker 4×4, is a great addition to an already amazing emergency truck. American Red Cross – Ensure home fire safety

Home fires are the most common disaster in this country and sadly, these fires claim seven US lives every day. This year is proving no different. Tragically, since the beginning of 2022, 431 people have lost their lives in home fires. Since January 1, 2022, the American Red Cross has already responded to more than 10,000 home fires, providing help to more than 37,000 people. Home fire safety The American Red Cross highlights the key steps that residents can follow to help them stay safe, should a fire breakout happen in their home. Residents can stay protected from home fires by taking two simple steps – test the smoke alarms monthly and practice the fire escape plan. Test the smoke alarms monthly – Working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half. Place smoke alarms on each level of the home and inside and outside bedrooms, and sleeping areas. Change the batteries at least once a year, if the model requires it is also important. Also, check the manufacturer’s date of the smoke alarms. If they are 10 years or older, they need to be replaced because the sensor becomes less sensitive over time. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Practice the fire escape plan until everyone can get out in less than two minutes. To create an effective home fire escape plan, include at least two ways to exit every room in the home. Select a meeting spot at a safe distance away from the home, such as the neighbor’s home or landmarks like a specific tree in the front yard, where everyone knows to meet. Teach children what a smoke alarm sounds like. Talk about fire safety and what to do in an emergency. Steps to help heat homes safely One of the leading causes of home fires is home heating and space heaters are most often responsible for these fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. That’s why the following key pointers are important to keep in mind for homes that have space heaters: If using a space heater, look for a model that shuts off automatically, if the heater falls over. Place the heater on a level, hard and non-flammable surface in the home. Keep all potential sources of fuel like paper, clothing, bedding, curtains or rugs at least three feet away from space heaters, stoves or fireplaces. Portable heaters and fireplaces should never be left unattended. Turn off space heaters and make sure any embers in the fireplace are extinguished, before going to bed or leaving home. Keep children and pets away from space heaters. Never use a cooking range or oven to heat the home. Keep fire in the fireplace by using a glass or metal fire screen large enough to catch sparks and rolling logs. Test batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Cooking safety With everyone spending more time at home, residents may be spending more time cooking meals. Cooking is the leading cause of US home fires. Since then, the effort has helped save more than 1,200 lives and installed more than 2.2 million free smoke alarms, thereby helping to make more than 966,000 homes safer across the country. Kentec’s K-Mesh wireless technology wins praise

K-Mesh, a next-generation wireless fire detection technology from Kentec Electronics, a manufacturer of life-critical control solutions, is winning deserved praise from the installer of a new system protecting the historic Chester Cathedral. Brad Parker, Founder of Charles Thomas Heritage Fire Protection, was tasked with specifying and upgrading the wireless fire detection system previously installed in the Cathedral. The thick walls and lead-lined roofs and the other challenges that come with a building that can trace its roots back to 1093, meant Brad had to think outside the box. He opted for Kentec’s K-Mesh system, a technology that uses self-healing and configuring Mesh technology to deliver optimum levels of reliability and performance. It also makes it easy to use, install and commission – and ultimately provides robust assurance that fire incidents are detected and communicated immediately. It is available as part of a complete fire detection system with Kentec-manufactured panels, such as the renowned Syncro AS panel and in this case the award-winning Taktis panel. A wireless translator module, which sits at the centre of the K-Mesh system, is hard-wired to the fire alarm control panel loop and communicates continuously with the wireless devices. Sensors are supplied in three variants: optical; thermal; and multi-criteria, with the optical and multi-criteria sensors featuring adaptive signal processing and double dust traps to prevent false alarms. Thermal detectors can respond to a fixed temperature threshold or detect a rate of rise in temperature. Wireless sounders, call points and testing kits are also available within the range. K-Mesh has a seven-to-ten-year battery life, which is approximately twice that of the industry standard. The technology is also fully expandable, and configurable from anything from two to 2,000 devices so even the largest, most disparate and complex sites can now be protected wirelessly. Further capabilities include a communication range of up to 1,200 metres and immunity to hacking. Due to the size of Chester Cathedral, many expanders are needed, and with the K-Mesh system, each expander has up to 5 redundancy paths which connects to the strongest expander, creating the Mesh. Even the dead spots in the cathedral are able to communicate with the strongest radio signal expander within its area, so in case of an emergency, every corner of the building is covered. “With the latest MESH technology, rather than one expander we can have three, four or even five redundancy paths and the signal connects itself automatically to the strongest expander to create the MESH,” Brad explains. Brad’s colleague, Operations Manager Byronn Alty, says that from an engineer’s perspective, the new technology is ‘phenomenal’: “We went to what we would believe would be the dead spots within the cathedral and low and behold the device started communicating with the strongest radio signal expander within its area. Firescout by Alcherax donates eight scholarships

Nittan introduces new Visual Alarm Base

Nittan Europe, a manufacturer of fire detection products sold globally, has launched the EV-PYSVAD Visual Alarm Base for use with its EV-PYS Photoelectric smoke detector. The new EV-PYSVAD is a Type A Indoor Beacon Base VAD with enhanced performance. It features 12 high power white LEDs which provide the required light output to meet the EN 54-23 Category C (Ceiling) certification requirements with a rating of C 3.0 x 5.0. As a slave device taking its commands from the EV-PYS detector, the EV-PYSVAD does not require an individual loop address. For maximum flexibility and ease of installation, the EV-PYSVAD has been designed to be a backward compatible drop-in replacement for its predecessor, the EV-PSBCN Visual Indicator Base, without the need for panel upgrades or type code changes. The EV-PYSVAD Visual Alarm Base has been introduced specifically for use with Nittan’s EV-PYS Photoelectric smoke detector, which comes complete with integral sounder.
