The forecast for wildland fire potential issued on February 1, 2022, by the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) predicts that over the next four months, the potential for wildfires will be higher than average in the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, parts of New Mexico and Arizona, and the central and southern plains, in the United States of America (USA). Over the last decade alone, fire ‘seasons’ in the USA have increased in length by two and a half months. In addition, the average area scorched by fires in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) has doubled in the last three decades, now encompassing nearly seven million acres per year. This figure is only expected to grow. Wildland firefighting is unpredictable, dangerous, and physically exhausting. Need for fire suppression systems to be modernised Since wildfires are not going away and will only intensify in the future, fire suppression systems must be modernised, in order to meet this increasing and dangerous demand. Fires can no longer be effectively fought using the same outdated methods, which were used in the past. Solutions that boost firefighting response and effectiveness, while significantly reducing maintenance and manpower are not only a good idea, but a critical necessity. All WUI communities play a crucial role in protecting the surrounding ecosystem and can aid in doing so by making the decision to equip their fire departments with tools that are dependable, easy to operate, and costs less than the traditional firefighting equipment. With Intelagard suppression systems: Stretch water resources. One gallon of water and foam concentrate can create up to 35 gallons of firefighting foam. Get closer to live fuels. Pretreat poles and fencing from unwanted burning. Create visible wet lines. Draft from alternate water sources (i.e., river, pool, ocean, hot tub, etc.) with a 6-to-19-foot vertical lift. Powerful wildland firefighting in a compact package The SwiftCAF ATV/UTV is a small-to-medium scale, Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) that is perfectly suited for rapid incident attack in restricted emergency access areas, such as cross country, off-road and rugged terrain environments. Its (optional) terrain spray bar, when combined with foam solution from the 14-gallon tank can apply a 4-foot, half mile long wet line, before needing to refill. Once the unit runs dry, it can be refilled from a stream, creek, pond, pool, or lake in a snap (even dirty and brackish water with debris up to 1/4 inch can be used). Rosenbauer’s new extinguishing system

Rosenbauer launches a new extinguishing system for burning traction batteries in electric vehicles. With the system, high-voltage batteries based on lithium-ion technology can be safely and efficiently extinguished. It enables direct cooling of the battery modules or the cells within the modules and thus a quick stop to the chain reaction of the continuous cells. Safety of the emergency services The safety of the emergency services was the top priority during development and is achieved by the fact that the operators are only in the vicinity of the burning vehicle for a very short time and the system is activated from a safe distance. The extinguishing system brings the extinguishing water exactly where it is needed: to cool the cells and modules in the battery housing. This extinguishes in a very resource-saving manner and reduces the spread of smoke gases to a minimum. Components of the extinguishing system  The system consists of two main components, an extinguishing unit, and an operating unit, which are connected with hoses. The extinguishing unit is positioned on the battery and, if necessary, supported on the body or other points. The preferred position is between the road and the vehicle when the vehicle is on all four wheels. It is also possible to have the system penetrate through the interior and trunk or from the top of vehicles lying on the side of the roof. System activation The system is activated via the control unit at a sufficient distance from the vehicle (approx. 8 meters). The extinguishing mandrel is driven into the battery with a force of several tons and the extinguishing water is discharged through the perforated extinguishing lance directly inside the battery. The water fills the battery housing completely and thus leads to efficient cooling. The amount of water in a normal TLF/HLF is sufficient to ensure successful extinguishing. A normal pressure pump is sufficient for the supply of extinguishing water. Extinguishing system After the battery has been cooled so that the cell temperature is in a safe range, the vehicle is ready for transport. The extinguishing system can remain in the battery during transport (and at the quarantine site). This means that water can be quickly reintroduced into the battery housing at any time, regardless of whether the vehicle is transported with a roll-off container or on a tow truck with a fire protection blanket. New powder coating line at Coopers Fire

Coopers Fire announces they have installed a new state-of-the-art powder coating line in their factory in Ignis House in Waterlooville. Coopers Fire has historically used specialist local powder coating companies to satisfy its requirements for coated metalwork and has decided to bring this process in-house. By powder coating the metalwork in-house, Coopers Fire can benefit from shorter lead times and improved quality on the painted product. The powder coating process – The basics Powder coating or Polyester Powder Coating (PPC) is a multi-step surface finishing process suitable for metal and non-metal substrates. The method includes a preparation, application, and curing stage, and at a minimum, utilises a spray gun, spray booth, and curing oven. In contrast to the liquid coating process, which utilises a liquid coating suspension, powder coating is a dry finishing process that employs powdered coating material. During the process, the powder is applied to a substrate’s pretreated surface, melted, and then dried and hardened into a protective/decorative coating. There are three stages: surface preparation, coating application, and heat curing. Environmentally friendly coating Powder coatings can be applied in a wide range of colors, finishes, textures, and thicknesses that are not readily achievable through conventional liquid coating methods. The final finish achieved ranges from matte to glossy, and clear to metallic. The result produces an even, hard finish that is generally more durable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly than a comparable liquid coating. Improved quality Having a turnkey system means Coopers can ensure the best quality of the finished smoke and fire curtains products as well as be able to complete the manufacturing process faster. This ultimately allows the business to save costs and improve lead times. The powder coating project was managed in-house by Rachel Kehoe, who is a Coopers Fire Production Engineer. The business chose a system including a spray gun, filtration extraction booths with a dedicated fire detection system, a large oven, and a manual conveyor to move the metalwork around the area. Movement of metalwork The conveyor allows the movement of the metalwork around the powder coating area. The metalwork is loaded onto flight bars and pushed through the spray booths. There are two spray booths located in opposing directions to allow the metalwork to be sprayed from both sides. The metalwork then moves round to the oven and cured at a temperature around 200 degrees Celsius and then offloaded back into the drying area once cured. Rosenbauer partners with OroraTech

Rosenbauer, a provider of fire-service vehicles and firefighting equipment manufacturer, and OroraTech, a digital wildfire intelligence service, have entered a strategic partnership to combat the emerging problem of wildfires by means of satellite systems. According to the UN, the number of wildfires is estimated to rise by 50% by 2100, and wildfires will become more intense and more frequent, ravaging communities and ecosystems in their path. Digitalising firefighting, the partnership between Rosenbauer and OroraTech will provide actionable insights to emergency organisations and forces on the ground. Incident command system Rosenbauer CSO Andreas Zeller: “Based on our long-time expertise of firefighting on the ground, the combination of our incident command system Connected Command and the satellite data provided by OroraTech enables faster response times and allows us to save the health and lives of firefighters.” OroraTech CEO Thomas Grübler: “Partnering with Rosenbauer, we will unlock satellite and other sensor data for emergency services around the world in a seamless manner, helping them for faster and more accurate response.” With the satellite data generated and analysed by OroraTech, Rosenbauer will further process and integrate this information to provide all the relevant data for those fighting and managing wildfires. The result is an uninterrupted information flow of life-saving insights reaching from fire detection to emergency response. Thermal imaging cameras Already OroraTech provides up-to-date wildfire information derived from public satellites with thermal imaging cameras. However, at intervals those are rarely sufficient to prevent disasters, depending on the region: delayed by up to 6 hours. Together with OroraTech, Rosenbauer plans to expand this system into a wildfire monitoring and fighting system that works with intervals of up to 30 minutes. To this end, the Munich-based startup will launch up to 100 satellites the size of a shoebox, each equipped with a high-resolution thermal imaging camera and artificial intelligence, into space over the next few years. James Wheeler – Taking Fireco to the next level Following a challenging 2 year period distinguished by expanding profits and sustained growth, the Fireco team are excited to announce the appointment of James Wheeler as their Chief Executive Officer. Before joining Fireco in July 2019 as their CCO, he was EMEA Business Director at ASSA ABLOY. Fireco, based in Brighton, manufactures wireless fire door closers and retainers, notification systems, disability aid products and hygiene equipment, all designed to provide simple solutions to a range of needs: fire safety, compliance, access, ventilation and hygiene. They have recently expanded their range to include fire door installations and inspections. “It’s an honour to lead such a creditable and respected brand as Fireco,” said Wheeler. “Having grown hugely over the last two years, we’ll continue to focus on dynamic growth through 2022. There’s a great deal to look forward to, especially driving Fireco into the software space and growing recurring revenue that allows for a subscription service to our customers. We’re also developing apps to support the system user experience of our cloud-based software, InSite. Jointly, we’ve launched our fire door services business, offering inspection, maintenance, and installation of fire door sets, approved and certified with our Dorgard and Freedor products. Advanced provides MxPro 5 fire alarm control

A host of fire protection solutions from UK manufacturer, Advanced, have been installed to protect approximately 140,000 sq ft of Grade A office space at Westferry House, Canary Wharf. As a cornerstone office building situated at the western gateway to Europe’s largest and most successful business district, Westferry House consists of 11 storeys, complete with its own retail promenade on the ground floor. At the core of the active fire protection for the building are six Advanced MxPro 5 fire alarm control panels installed alongside Apollo Soteria multi-sensors. Remote-control terminal Responsible for all aspects of the installation, as well as the future maintenance of the system, are Advanced partners, Pacific Security Systems. The Kent-based fire and security specialists installed the MxPro 5 fire panels alongside Advanced’s remote-control terminal and repeater panel, TouchControl, to provide a discreet and aesthetically pleasing means of viewing the fire system in the building’s recently refurbished reception area. Advanced’s AdSpecials team was also commissioned by Pacific Security Systems to design and manufacture a custom-built annunciator panel to control the pressurisation and extraction fans and dampers on all floors of the building. The annunciator also integrates with the building’s VA/PA system to provide manual control of messages on all floors. Charleston Fire Department orders pumpers

Pierce Manufacturing  announced an order from the Charleston Fire Department in South Carolina for two Arrow XT pumpers and one Saber pumper. The department purchased the fire apparatus through Pierce dealer Spartan Fire and Emergency Apparatus, and delivery is expected in August 2022. The Pierce Arrow XT pumpers feature a heavy-duty design with a short overall length of 29 feet and will be stationed in Charleston’s historic downtown district. The Saber pumper offers outstanding visibility, substantial space, and thoughtful ergonomics and will support Charleston Fire Department’s suburban and rural service areas. “The Charleston Fire Department has several fire stations built in the 1880’s and 1910 with height and length restrictions,” said Joseph Roberts, Assistant Chief of Technical Services for the Charleston Fire Department. “Working with Pierce and their dealer, Spartan Fire, we were able to develop specifications for apparatus to fit into these older stations and maneuver through Charleston’s narrow historic streets.
